May Recap & Announcement

So first is the announcement, which comes in three parts.

First; I am going to be taking a mini hiatus. It’s only for a week and I’ll be back posting again next Tuesday but the reason for this hiatus is that I have a new job. I’m still working for the same company but it’s a promotion which means more work and potentially longer hours, and I need to take a step back from blogging just for the first week to adjust. I will still be commenting and blog hopping until Friday, because on Friday I am off on holiday and will be unable to comment/blog hop.

Second; I will be launching a new feature in June. This is one I am really excited about and one I have had swimming around in the back of my mind for a while now so I’m interested to see what you all think of it. I don’t want to spoil anything so more information will be upcoming.

Third; I will be shortly deleting my Instagram/Bookstagram account. I’ve been thinking of this for a while, I haven’t posted anything since last November and at the moment I’m not motivated to start posting again so it’s a waste having an account.

Monthly Recaps - This Month

Books I Reviewed

May Recap '17, #1

ARC Review: Flame in the Mist by Renee Ahdieh

This was one of my highly anticipated releases for 2017, and it more than lived up to my expectations. Flame in the Mist is a brilliant story, even better than Renee Ahdieh’s debut duology.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley.

Hunted by Meagan Spooner

Another fairytale retelling I couldn’t wait to get my hands on. While Hunted’s plot was slow to develop there was something about the story and the characters that kept me hooked.

A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas

After loving the first two books in this series A Court of Wings and Ruin was a highly anticipated release of mine. After reading it I feel like there aren’t enough words to fully describe how much I loved it.

Release by Patrick Ness

Patrick Ness is a favourite author of mine, and while I really liked Release I felt like there was something missing. There’s something magical in his earlier books that there doesn’t seem to be in his newer ones.

The Game of Love and Death by Martha Brockenbrough

I put this book on my to-read list ages ago and kept forgetting it was there. I finally got around to it and am kicking myself for not having picked it up before. The Game of Love and Death is a must-read for everyone in my opinion.

ARC Review: When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon

The hype surrounding this book managed to hook me as well. While I enjoyed When Dimple Met Rishi I did think, and hope, the arranged marriage trope would play more into the story.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley.

The Heroes of Olympus Series

I finished reading the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series last year, and it’s only now that I finally got around to The Heroes of Olympus books. Why I left it that long I have no idea but there was not one thing about these books I didn’t love.

The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan

The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan

The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan

The House of Hades by Rick Riordan

The Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan

Monthly Recaps - Book Haul

Like last month this is an average haul for May, mainly filled with pre-orders I placed for books a while ago that were finally released and one book I don’t plan to start for a while now because of what I’ve been told about the ending (one guess which book that is). The next two months will have much bigger hauls; basically June and July is when I go bankrupt buying new books.

Monthly Recaps - Last Month

Last month instead of featuring a full(ish) TBR list for the following month I just featured on book that was being released that I was excited to get started on. So that’s what I’m going to do from now on. I don’t stick to TBR lists well, which I feel most people are well aware of, but this is one book I am planning to get started on the second I have it in my hands…

Our Dark Duet

Our Dark Duet by V.E. Schwab

Kate Harker is a girl who isn’t afraid of the dark. She’s a girl who hunts monsters. And she’s good at it. August Flynn is a monster who can never be human, no matter how much he once yearned for it. He’s a monster with a part to play. And he will play it, no matter the cost.

Nearly six months after Kate and August were first thrown together, the war between the monsters and the humans is terrifying reality. In Verity, August has become the leader he never wished to be, and in Prosperity, Kate has become the ruthless hunter she knew she could be. When a new monster emerges from the shadows – one who feeds on chaos and brings out its victim’s inner demons – it lures Kate home, where she finds more than she bargained for. She’ll face a monster she thought she killed, a boy she thought she knew, and a demon all her own.

I have a fairly busy June; I’m starting a new job, going on holiday, introducing a new feature, and celebrating my birthday, and that’s just in the first half of the month. Hopefully everything I have going on won’t affect my blogging too much, but I’m hoping for the best and if it does I’m going to just apologise now.

See you all in a week!

  1. It seems you had a wonderful month this May! I’m so glad you loved both ACOWAR and Flame in the Mist. They definitely lived up to my expectations, as well! That Fairy Loot crate looks amazing! I’m excited to see what your new feature will be 😀 It’s understandable that you deleted your book/instagram, especially if it’s not being used. I’m deeply considering getting rid of my own account. Last I posted was October I think lol. And huge congratulations on your promotion!! That’s such wonderful news 😀 I hope you’re enjoying your new position so far! ❤

    1. Yeah looking back I think May was a good month overall for me. There were definitely some great books I managed to get around to for sure! That’s great to hear about Flame in the Mist and ACOWAR for you Azia, and yeah no matter what month it is Fairy Loot is always amazing!
I’m hoping to be able to post it soon, so I really hope everyone likes it, and yeah after a long time of not posting you do start to wonder why you even have the account don’t you?
Thanks so much Azia, yeah I’m definitely really enjoying it. It’s a fair bit more work but so fun at the same time! 🙂 ❤️

  2. Ahh, I’m so excited for your new feature Beth!!!!

I ended up deleting my Bookstagram too because it just soo wasn’t my thing. Your photos are so gorgeous though so I’m glad I’ll still get to see them on your blog 😀

Amazing reading month. So happy you read and loved the HoO series!!!

    1. Thanks so much Lauren, I’m so excited to actually start posting it! 😀
I’ll still be posting photos in my recaps, but yeah turns out Bookstagram hasn’t really been my thing either. :/
Thanks again, yeah I really wish I’d ended up starting HoO earlier because it was amazing. Still better late than never right? 😀

  3. Looks like you had a fantastic reading month last month, Beth!! Here we were worried about possible reading slumps, mostly of the fantasy sort, and yet I think if anything ACOWAR kick started even more reading. Also, I can guess which book you’re putting off for a while – Lord of Shadows!! 😂 I’ve already said it but definitely a great idea because ouch that ending and the torturous wait for the last book. I’m pretty sure my talk of possible cliffhangers before the release jinxed it lol. And I swear each month’s FairyLoot seems to get better and better. I’m thinking about subscribing for my birthday or something or if I have the extra money in a few months. Anyway! I hope everything is going well with your new job and that you have fun on your holiday! And I can’t wait to see this new feature. I bet it’s going to be amazing! Also, I hope that June is an incredible month for you. Oh and happy early birthday!! 😊💕

    1. Ha, yeah any thoughts of reading slumps have been put to the back of my mind. It seems like nothing can put a stop on the fantasy binge I’ve been on lately. Definitely putting LoS on hold for a while, you’ve told me the cliffhanger is worse than the one in AGOS and I just can’t do that to myself. I’ll get around to it eventually though. I’ll probably time it so I can read Lady Midnight and Lord of Shadows in the run up to the release of the third book.
It really does seem like it. They’ve released the theme for the July box and it sounds like the best yet. Of course I’m really excited for the June box in the meantime! 😀 If you do manage to get one Melissa I’m sure you’ll love it so much.
Thanks so much, yep everything is going great in my new job, I love it so much and my holiday was amazing as well. I will be posting a recap of sorts from it soon. My new feature will be up soon-ish too! 😀
      Thanks Melissa! 😀 ❤

      1. Same! I think it helped that I switched to contemporaries for a week or so before diving back into my fantasy binge. 😂 Oh the cliffhanger is definitely worse than AGOS or it could be exactly how it felt to have to wait for ACOL after AGOS because I still can’t believe the last one isn’t out until 2019.
What’s theme for July’s box? I know I’ve seen the one for June but not July. But yeah I’m thinking I’ll have to subscribe sometime within the next few months just because I really want one.
Glad to hear your job is going well and that your holiday was good! I can’t wait to see your recap for it.
        You’re welcome, Beth!! 😊💕

      2. I’ve been reading more contemporaries recently and I think having my really long fantasy binge has helped me get into those stories more.
Either way I can’t handle a cliffhanger worse than, or as bad as, AGOS!
The theme is Tricksters. It sounds amazing, and I think I already know what the book is as well. 🙂 They have the themes on their Instagram so you can check it out there if you like. 🙂
Thanks so much Melissa! 😀 ❤️

      3. Right? I’m actually hoping for no more cliffhangers this year because I am cliffhangered out. But saying that probably means that I just jinxed it and I already know my current read ends in somewhat of a cliffhanger so. 😂
That does sound amazing! What book do you think it’s going to be? I’ll have to check out their Instagram.
        You’re welcome, Beth!! 😊💕

      4. See you say that but I reckon there’ll be a few you have to live with. I have a strong feeling Tarnished City will be one of them because something tells me we’re getting a cliffhanger with that book!
Possibly Daughter of a Burning City, which I am so so so excited for so I can’t wait to get that box! 😀 ❤

  4. I’m glad you enjoyed ACOWAR. I think it was a really great conclusion for the Trilogy with Feyre & Rhys. ACOMAF is still my favorite but I feel like ACOWAR resolved so many things from the other books before, that in my mind, it was really satisfying to read whilst ACOMAF was really a game changer.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I loved ACOWAR overall but yeah I’ve been hearing from quite a few people how ACOMAF was their favourite. I really need to go back and re-read the whole trilogy from start to finish, I may find myself agreeing with everyone. I do remember ACOMAF being an epic game changer in so many different ways! 😀

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Acomaf is my favorite because it was such a game changer but Acowar was so satisfying that I couldn’t give it a bad rating even though the stakes might not have been as high.

  5. Good luck with your new job! Hope that it won’t be too exhausting and that you will adjust well! ❤ Also, I'm really exited about your new upcoming feature! 😀
Fairy Loot always looks beautiful and I always want to get one as well! But, you know the life of a broke university student. XD I do plan on getting a job over the summer, so I might finally be able to get myself one.
The cover for Our Dark Duet looks stunning! I can't wait to read that series/duology (not sure what it is). Buuut I should probably finish the Shades of Magic series first.

    1. Thanks so much Anna! ❤ It hasn't been exhausting so far so I think I should be able to keep to my blogging schedule as is. I may just have to be a little better at managing things on the fly.
I'll be posting it soon-ish so I really hope everyone loves it. And Fairy Loot is definitely gorgeous. If you do manage to get a box whatever month you end up with is sure to be a brilliant one!
It really really does. V.E. Schwab's books just have gorgeous covers. I can't wait to have it in my hands but yeah I'd highly recommend finishing her Shades of Magic series, it's amazing! 😀

I’m very excited about this new feature of yours, can’t wait to discover it! You’ve had a great May and I cannot wait for you to go bankrupt this summer, hahaha! I wish you a great June!! xxxx

    1. Thanks so much Donna, I was so happy to be able to start in my new job this week.
I’m really excited about this new feature as well. I just hope everyone here loves it as much as I do.
Thanks again Donna, and I hope you have an amazing June too! 😀 ❤

  7. Congratulations on your promotion Beth! It’s definitely a great idea to hit that pause button for all that is blogging. Hope the adjustments will go fine and you’ll find a whole new rhythm that fits your schedule! May was definitely a fabulous month for books though. Love that you completed one of Riordan’s series (pretty edition you got there too!). Hope June will be filled with awesomeness as well, but just with the fact that you’ll be reading Our Dark Duet, I think it’s safe to say you’ll have an epic month. 😀 😀 😀 Happy reading!!!

    1. Thanks so much Lashaan, yeah things seem to be going all right at the moment but I guess the good thing about blogging is we can take a step back every now and again when real life gets a little too much.
May was definitely a good month for me, and part of that was probably because of the amazing books I got through. Rick Riordan’s series was beyond amazing, and so pretty on my bookshelves as well. 🙂
Ha, yes any month featuring a new V.E. Schwab release is going to be an amazing month, it’s very safe to say.
Thanks Lashaan, I hope you have an amazing June too. 🙂

  8. OH congratulations on your new job, Beth, this is so awesome – and well deserved for sure:! I hope it will be an interesting job and that you will adjust to it just fine. We will miss you around here for sure but always keep you in the back of our minds for sure as you are one of the greatest bloggers 😉
You made me even more impatient to read Flame In The Mist here, I’m hoping to order the book soon.
I’m eager to see what you’re going to do with your blogging and this new feature of yours 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Marie, yeah I was so thrilled to find out I got the job. It’s definitely going to be a challenge but one I’m really looking forwards to. I’m going to miss posting for sure, I’m trying to keep up to date on comments and posts so I won’t be completely gone! 🙂
I really think you’ll enjoy Flame in the Mist Marie, especially considering you enjoyed The Wrath and the Dawn as well. That’s great to hear, I hope you like it when I start posting for it! 😀

  9. I cannot believe that it’s almost time for Our Dark Duet already! I feel like I just finished This Savage Song the other day, though that’s probably more a tribute to Schwab’s really imaginative world-building – she makes it really hard to leave her stories afterwards.

I’m glad to hear that you think Flame in the Mist is better than the TWATD duology! I’ve started it but I’m having the hardest time getting through it, though I’m 100% sure that’s more to do with my reading slump than the actual book itself. Such a shame, but I’ll persevere.

Also, yay for the new job – I hope it’s everything you ever hoped for! And June sounds like a busy month for you, with the birthday and the vacation and all that. Hope you have a really, really great month. ❤

    1. It does seem like it’s come around really quickly. Then again I feel like most of my time was spent waiting for A Conjuring of Light so I wasn’t all that focused on Our Dark Duet until ACOL was actually released. Schwab is such a brilliant writer, I’m going to have to read This Savage Song before starting Our Dark Duet and I can’t wait to get around to it again.
Oh no, reading slumps are just the worst! I hope you manage to get out of yours quickly enough to enjoy Flame in the Mist. It’s a good book and if you enjoyed TWATD I think you’ll love Flame in the Mist as well. 🙂
Thanks so much Reg, yeah there always seem to be certain months that are busier than others for me. I guess June just turned out to be one of them. It does seem like everything happened all at once though.
Thanks Reg, I hope you have a great month too! 😀 ❤

  10. Eek I can’t wait for your new feature, Beth! Sounds awesome. And ooh congrats on the promotion! Take all the time you need to slide into it. AAAGGHH THIS SAVAGE SONG IS THE INE SCHWAB BOOK I HAVEN’T READ YET! I think I saw The Game of Love and Death somewhere but it didn’t look that interesting to me. But it’s gotten really great reviews so I might pick it up! Agh I’m so glad you enjoyed HoO! (Wait, have you read the Kane Chronicles yet?) Also stop making me jealous of how many books you have. 😥 XD

    1. Thanks May, I really hope you end up enjoying it when it is posted. I’m really excited for this one because it’s been something in the back of my mind for a while now. Thanks again, it’s a bit of an adjustment but here’s hoping before too long it becomes business as usual! 😀
Oh This Savage Song is amazing, I’d definitely recommend it, and that’s a shame about The Game of Love and Death but if it’s not really your thing no point forcing yourself to read it right?
I haven’t read the Kane Chronicles, though they’re on my to-read list. Ha, I tend to buy a lot of books each month, it’s an issue more often than not! 😀 ❤

  11. You’ve had a great month 🙂 congrats on your promotion!! I also can’t wait to see what blog feature you’re going to introduce!! I absolutely Loved Flame in the Mist!!! I was so iffy going into it because I didn’t like her previous duology, but I am so glad I did because 😍😍😍 and ACOWAR!! 😍😍 I’m so sad that it’s the end of Feyre and Rhys’ character arc, but I’m looking forward to seeing where she goes with the next three books!! I really want to start the summoner series – I should grab copes!! 😀 I also really need to play catch up with Clare because I have only read 2 1/2 of those books and they were the first two in the TMI series!! 🤔🤔too many books 😂😂

    1. Thanks so much Lauren, yeah I was excited to start my new job and I’m even more excited about my new feature as well. It’s been something in the back of my mind for a while now so I hope everyone really enjoys it!:D
Yeah Flame in the Mist was just amazing, but I loved her first duology so I don’t think that was ever in doubt for me, and it’s not like we’ll never see Feyre and Rhys again. I feel like anything SJM writes is going to be amazing! 😀
I’m hoping to get started on the Summoner series this month, if I have the time, and yeah I need to start making my way through the rest of Clare’s books as well. I’ll wish you luck catching up with her releases Lauren, there are definitely a lot of them! 😀
