More Than This by Patrick Ness

More Than This

A boy drowns, desperate and alone in his final moments. He dies.

Then he wakes, naked and bruised and thirsty, but alive.

How can this be? And what is this strange deserted place?

As he struggles to understand what is happening, the boy dares to hope. Might this not be the end? Might there be more to this life, or perhaps this afterlife?

From multi-award-winning Patrick Ness comes one of the most provocative and moving novels of our time.

More Than This was the second book by Patrick Ness I decided to pick up, and to this day it remains my second favourite of all his releases as well, after the Chaos Walking trilogy. Originally this book wasn’t all that high on my to-read list, certainly not above The Knife of Never Letting Go or A Monster Calls which both seemed to have more buzz surrounding them and which both had more intriguing blurbs. However when one of my fellow WordPress bloggers kept mentioning this book to me, saying it was her favourite and a book she loved, I knew I had to pick it up.

There’s no way to fully describe More Than This without spoiling parts of the plot, so all I’ll say is that this book is one you have to read to understand why it’s so amazing. Don’t do what I did and judge it by its blurb.

“At first it’s okay, you know, not perfect, but okay, and you get used to it. Then it gets a little worse, and you get used to that, too. Then one day, you wake up and you don’t have the first freakin’ clue how it got that bad.”

You can check out my review for More Than This here.

What did you think of More Than This? Have you read it yet or is it still on your to-read list? Let me know in the comments and let me know if you took part in this week’s Standalone Sunday as well.

  1. I still haven’t gotten around to this book yet. I have no idea why, especially since I already own the book and love the books by Patrick Ness. Well, hopefully I’ll be reading it some time soon! Especially since I, somehow, forgot that I had it and you just reminded me of it! So thank you for that. 😀

    1. Well in that case I hope you manage to find the time for it soon Anna. It’s such an amazing book in my opinion and if you love Patrick Ness’s other book I’m more than sure you’ll love this one as well.
That’s all right, I really hope you end up enjoying this one! 😀

    1. Oh it was amazing, definitely so much more than I expected as well given what little the blurb revealed.
I’m still holding out hope for some kind of definitive answer as to what happened to Seth, but yeah this is one of the books I do wish I could read again for the first time. 🙂

  3. I absolutely love Patrick Ness. A Monster Calls and The Knife Of Never Letting Go were stellar. However, I really didn’t enjoy The Rest of Us Just Live Here. I was extremely let down by it so I am a little skeptical about reading anything else by Ness. I’m sure that I will eventually get around to reading more by Patrick and I think More Than This will be the perfect book to get me reading his books again.

    1. He’s one of my favourite authors as well, and I agree with you on A Monster Calls and The Knife Of Never Letting Go, the latter is actually my favourite of his releases.
More Than This is amazing and I think if you were let down by The Rest of Us Just Live Here you definitely won’t be by More Than This. It’s my second favourite of his books so I’m sure you’ll love it as well. 🙂

  4. I have so many of Patrick Ness’s books on my TBR it’s not even funny. I still haven’t even gotten around to A Monster Calls (I’m not even letting myself watch the movie until I read the book), which is another book I said I would read last year but never did 🙈. I definitely want to try to get around to this one and A Monster Calls this year though. Especially after reading that quote you included. It sounds like a fantastic book! Great pick, Beth! 😊♥

    1. In that case I guess you need to start reading and crossing them off your to-read list. I’d say More Than This is a perfect place to start, but A Monster Calls is amazing as well (I haven’t seen the movie yet either, and I did read the book last year ready for its release).
Either way no matter what book you pick of his to start with you can’t really go wrong, all his releases are amazing!
Thanks so much Melissa. 😀 ❤

      1. In that case I can see why that would be first on your list. And maybe if you enjoy it you can go and grab a copy of More Than This and get started immediately after. If you enjoy Patrick Ness’s books as much as I did you’ll want to binge read them all! 😀

      2. If I do enjoy it (which I have a feeling that I will) then I’ll definitely be picking up More Than This straight after. The binge reader that I am always wants to do that after really enjoying a book by an author. 😂😊

  5. Ok, so I still haven’t read any Patrick Ness books. Which is crazy. Because there are a few I really wanna read. This being one of them! Thanks for reminding me I need to read this one!!

    1. Oh in that case I’d highly recommend picking some of his books up Megan. He’s one of my all-time favourite authors and I think whatever one you pick up you can’t really go wrong.
That’s all right, I really hope you enjoy this one when you get around to it. 🙂
