Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Hidden Gem Books in … Genre.
I put a little spin on this week’s theme and haven’t selected one specific genre to feature. Instead I’ve selected the top five hidden gems I’ve read and want to recommend to everyone, and the top five hidden gems I still have to read. How have I decided which books are hidden gems? It’s been down to how many ratings they have on Goodreads and how little I’ve seen other bloggers on WordPress talking about them.
Top Five Hidden Gems I’ve Read
Gilded Cage by Vic James
It’s not exactly a secret that I don’t normally enjoy dystopian books, so the fact that Gilded Cage is on my list this week should say plenty about how amazing this series is. It’s taken me on an insane journey, and I have no idea where the third book will go but I know it will be brilliant.
Song of the Current by Sarah Tolcser
This is a rare fantasy book in that Caro’s parents are a very present part of her life, and it’s not only her parents but her extended family as well. Song of the Current was a brilliant debut, and I feel it’s left the series open to go anywhere in the second book.
The Game of Love and Death by Martha Brockenbrough
I’m genuinely surprised this book doesn’t have more ratings, then again I did keep forgetting it was on my to-read list for the longest time. The Game of Love and Death is an incredible book, one that for me brought back memories of reading The Book Thief and The Night Circus.
Wing Jones by Katherine Webber
Again this is a book I’m surprised more people haven’t read, or been talking about. Wing Jones is a brilliant book with a mixed-race main character, who has an incredible family surrounding her and a lot of important issues to overcome. Basically this is a book I’d recommend to everyone.
Defy the Stars by Claudia Gray
Everyone’s heard of Claudia Gray’s Firebird trilogy, no doubt in part because of the gorgeous covers, but it doesn’t seem like many people have heard of Defy the Stars. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book, actually I don’t know if I had any expectations, but I was still blown away.
Top Five Hidden Gems on my To-Read List
The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco
The hype for this book in the run up to its release was unreal; it seemed like everyone was reading it and everyone was loving it. Then The Bone Witch was released and it dropped off the map. I’ve seen nothing more about it but I still remember all the amazing reviews I’ve seen so far.
The Disappearances by Emily Bain Murphy
I’ve seen two incredible reviews for The Disappearances so far, and based on what they’ve said I expect to see more hype surrounding this book because it sounds amazing. The good reviews have been enough to convince me to read this, hopefully they’ll do the same for others.
Cold Summer by Gwen Cole
The reviews for Cold Summer I have seen have been pretty mixed, but this book is a time travel story. Like with fairytale retellings any book with time travel in is something I automatically add to my to-read list. Plus it doesn’t hurt that the cover for Cold Summer is really pretty as well.
Ink by Alice Broadway
You can probably guess the main reason I picked up this book, and that’s the beyond gorgeous cover which the Goodreads picture simply doesn’t do justice to. I’ve seen exactly zero reviews for Ink so I have no idea what this book is about beyond what the blurb tells me.
Lost Boy by Christina Henry
Christina Henry’s Alice duology was incredible, so I was beyond thrilled to see she had another book out retelling another fairytale. I don’t need to see any reviews, which is a good thing because I’ve only seen one so far, to know this is going to be a book I love.
So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what some of the hidden gems you’ve discovered lately are.
Oh, I love this post Beth! A lot of the hidden gems you’ve read are on my TBR, and now after seeing this list I’m even more excited to read them! Song of the Current sounds AMAZING and I can’t wait to pick up Defy the Stars as well. I heard so much about The Bone Witch leading up to its release as well! It definitely sounds like it’s worth a read. Cold Summer has such a pretty cover, I hope you enjoy them both once you get around to reading them! ❤

Thanks so much Analee, and oh in that case I’d highly recommend getting around to them ASAP. The ones I’ve read are favourites of mine and I’ve heard good things about the ones I haven’t so I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. 🙂
Song of the Current and Defy the Stars are both as amazing as they sound. Better even. The Bone Witch certainly sound promising, and so does Cold Summer. Thanks, I hope you enjoy the books that are still on your to-read list as well Analee! 🙂 ❤️

I really want to try and get around to Lost Boy ASAP, because I already know I’m going to love it. I hope you enjoy Defy the Stars Lashaan if you decide to pick it up, and thanks! 😀

I’ve only read two reviews for Song of the Current but both have been positive. I know that’s not saying much, but it really does sound like a really good book. I haven’t really heard of Wing Jones but I’ve seen the cover a few times on your channel and Marta’s, I think. I’m really curious about that one. And of course, you’ve convinced me that I really need to read Gilded Cage and Defy the Stars. I hope you end up loving Cold Summer (I enjoyed it despite the issues I pointed out in my review). And I remember that hype around Bone Witch. I disappeared really quickly after it’s release. I’m curious to see how that one is. I’ve read more than a few positive reviews for The Disappearances. It sounds like a book we both might enjoy! Great post, Beth! 😀

It is a really good book in my opinion, and yeah there aren’t that many reviews so it would be great to see more and see this book get some more recognition. Wing Jones is another book that needs more recognition. I’d definitely recommend it Azia because it’s a great contemporary read.
Yes definitely definitely pick up those two, both are unforgettable books and I especially need someone to talk to about the amazing series that is Gilded Cage! 😀
Thanks Azia, and yeah I remember the hype around The Bone Witch as well, which is why is seems so strange that’s it dropped off the radar so quickly.
Hopefully we do enjoy The Disappearances then, and thanks Azia! 😀 ❤

I haven’t read any of these but I have The Bone Witch on my TBR pile. I was able to buy it when it was a Kindle deal. Such a lovely cover and I heard the author is Filipino.👍

I didn’t know that about the author, but I did notice the gorgeous cover! 😀

OH BETH! Well first of all, for some reason I missed all of your posts the past few days and I am MAD. Anyway ahah. I wanted to say, I am SO happy to see Ink here: I recently bought this book, I fell in love with the cover and intrigued by the synopsis when I saw it in a bookstore in Dublin. I couldn’t NOT buy it, yet I have heard nothing about this book. It sounds so, so good, though! I hope we’ll both end up loving it 🙂 And yes, the disappearances deserves more hype, it was such a great book 🙂

Oh that’s strange, but at least you’ve discovered them now. 🙂 There seems to be a few bugs with WordPress every so often, guess this is one of them.
The cover was the sole reason I brought Ink as well. Don’t get me wrong the blurb sounds really good but the cover was so gorgeous I just couldn’t resist. 🙂 I hope we both love it as well, and I hope I enjoy The Disappearances as much as you did. 😀 ❤

I READ INK! It was really surprising but compared to the cover (the reason I bought it) it was kind of MEH. The premise was OUSTANDING but the actual book? AGH, not THAT good! I’ve seen Defy The Stars in the library but never picked it up? OOPS. I’ve actually heard a lot about Wing Jones!

Oh that’s a shame, I brought it for the cover as well and don’t think I’ll ever regret buying it because it’s an amazing cover. 🙂 I guess I’ll just have to wait and see what I do think of it.
Defy the Stars is brilliant, an incredible sci-fi book so I’d highly recommend it. Same with Wing Jones! 😀

Oh, I currently have The Game of Love and Death checked out! I’m not sure if I’ll get around to it because I have some other library books due in a few days, so I’ll just turn in that book as well if I don’t read it. But it sounds super good, and I think I saw it at my school library haha! And Ink has SUCH a gorgeous cover omggggg. I don’t even know what the book is about, but THAT COVERRRRR. *heart eyes* Great post!

The cover for Ink was the sole reason I ended up buying it. I didn’t even read the blurb I just grabbed the book in Waterstones and added it to my pile before heading to the check out. I couldn’t resist! 😀 Thanks May.
