Fairy Loot Unboxing: Magic and Mayhem

As I’m currently on a book buying ban instead of posting a monthly book haul, in which I would have included my Fairy Loot box, I decided to do an unboxing for the first time ever. This is something I will continue to do at least until my book buying ban is over in the new year.

The September box was; Magic and Mayhem.

This box is perfect for fans of the Grisha books, A Darker Shade of Magic (Shades of Magic series), and Russian folklore. It features SIX amazing goodies, most of which are exclusive so you’ll only get them in this box! The book is a highly anticipated hardback that is released in September.

Doesn’t the September theme sound amazing? I was thrilled with the book in this month’s box and beyond thrilled with all the goodies inside.

Castle of Fables included a soy candle which scent and colour has been inspired by the different Grisha Orders; Corporalki, Materialki, and Ethrealki. There were three possibilities as to which one was included in my box and I got Corporalki; think Nina from Six of Crows. This was my favourite item in the September box. I love bookish candles and have quickly gone through the ones I already had, so now I have a new one to get started on.

There were plenty of Grisha goodies in this box. As well as the candle there was a stunning Second Army poster designed by GoodNightKittens, exclusive Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom postcards, and a Grisha notebook designed by the people at Literary Emporium exclusively for the September Fairy Loot box.

My second favourite item in the September box was the Shades of Magic series badges. I’m a massive fan of Shades of Magic, if you’re unaware of that fact, so these badges are going to be going everywhere with me once I decide where I want to put them.

There was a gorgeous necklace designed by Pastel Clouds Jewellery, and a cute Harry Potter sticker which, like the badges, will be finding a permanent home soon.

Every month I enjoy guessing what book will be in each box but I was completely surprised by Vassa in the Night, which came in a Fairy Loot tote bag this month, mainly because I had no clue it had already been released. Either way it sounds like an amazing book, I featured it as my Waiting on Wednesday pick a little while ago, and I cannot wait to get started on it.

Vassa in the Night by Sarah Porter

In the enchanted kingdom of Brooklyn, the fashionable people put on cute shoes, go to parties in warehouses, drink on rooftops at sunset, and tell themselves they’ve arrived. A whole lot of Brooklyn is like that now—but not Vassa’s working-class neighbourhood.

In Vassa’s neighbourhood, where she lives with her stepmother and bickering stepsisters, one might stumble onto magic, but stumbling out again could become an issue. Babs Yagg, the owner of the local convenience store, has a policy of beheading shoplifters—and sometimes innocent shoppers as well. So when Vassa’s stepsister sends her out for light bulbs in the middle of night, she knows it could easily become a suicide mission.

But Vassa has a bit of luck hidden in her pocket, a gift from her dead mother. Erg is a tough-talking wooden doll with sticky fingers, a bottomless stomach, and a ferocious cunning. With Erg’s help, Vassa just might be able to break the witch’s curse and free her Brooklyn neighbourhood. But Babs won’t be playing fair…

Inspired by the Russian folktale Vassilissa the Beautiful and Sarah Porter’s years of experience teaching creative writing to New York City students.

The theme for the October box is; Steampunk Rebellion.

This box is perfect for fans of The Infernal Devices (are you team Jem or team Will?), Divergent and general steampunk awesomeness. There will be SEVEN items in this box—how great is that? It’s filled to the brim!

It seems like the Fairy Loot boxes get better and better so I can’t wait to see what is in the October box. I have no idea what book it will be but hopefully I’ll be happy with it.

Has anyone else got the Fairy Loot box for September, or subscribed for the October box? What did you think of the goodies in this one, and do you have any clue what book will be in the October box? Let me know in the comments below.

    1. It’s a really pretty one isn’t it? And I am completely in love with this box. I think it just gets better and better each month, but yeah expensive as well.
The candle was my favourite, I love bookish candles, and I love the Shades of Magic series so the pins were a major plus as well! 😀

  1. Wow! The theme for September did sound amazing and the stuff you got in the box is wonderful! (I’m jealous) I’m seriously tempted by this box and hope I can get it in the future as well. 🙂

    1. It was just a brilliant box, and I was so pleased with everything inside as well. Definitely my favourite Fairy Loot box they’ve done so far.
It would be great if you did get it one month, I think no matter what one you go for you’re guaranteed to love it! 😀

      1. I do hope to get one rather soon! (If everything works out.) And I’m sure I won’t be disappointed, all the boxes so far have looked amazing! 🙂

  2. If only shipping to the US for Fairy Loot wasn’t so expensive! This subscription box is one that I want so bad but can’t manage because it’s a bit too much for me. It’s such a gorgeous box though. Especially this months! I’ve been watching everyone’s unboxings and admiring them for a far haha.

    1. Subscription boxes everywhere seem to be expensive, it’s just finding one that’s in your country that is a little bit cheaper than one outside. I used to be subscribed to Owl Crate but when I saw there was an English subscription box (Fairy Loot) I went for that one instead just because it worked out a little cheaper for me, plus it arrives a lot quicker as well! 😀
This month’s is my favourite so far, and then I can’t wait to get my hands on next month’s either! 😀

      1. True! I pretty much only subscribed to OwlCrate last month and this month because of my birthday and plan on canceling next month because it really doesn’t fit in my budget. I saw the theme for next month and I wanted to subscribe so bad. If only it wasn’t $50. I can’t wait to see your unboxing. I’m betting it’s going to be incredible.

      2. Oh it’s nice to get them for your birthday but yeah it is expensive even if you’re getting them shipped within your country. I do keep track of the Owl Crate themes, they sound so amazing! You’ll have to do an unboxing as well, I can’t wait to see what you get. 😀

  3. Oh, no! I ordered this box for September, and I think next month’s OwlCrate is also Vassa in the Night. 😂 I don’t think it’s too late for me to cancel OwlCrate. Plus with me moving and having communication issues with Fairy Loot, I probably won’t receive this box until the middle of October. I didn’t realize they don’t send out the boxes to other countries earlier to make sure they get there on time. The fine print says 2-4 weeks. I wish I had read that. They also told me they changed their shipping and sent me an invoice to pay more. I already paid $60 more than OwlCrate for 3 months. I laughed when I got the email. And my box is going to the wrong address and then being re-routed to the right one. I’m thinking 4 weeks for mine at least. Everything in this box looks great. Too bad I’m allergic to candles. I had to throw out the one from last month’s OwlCrate because I kept sneezing. 😂 I’m really looking forward to Vassa in the Night. 🙂

    1. Oh no that does suck, but maybe you could do a giveaway for the extra copy, or send it to a friend or something. I think in the end an extra copy of a book is never too much of an issue is it? Especially if it’s a good one which hopefully Vassa in the Night will be.
Wow, it seems like you’ve had a lot of trouble with this box. No they normally send out the boxes at the same time for everyone no matter where you are, but Owl Crate did the same thing, the international boxes weren’t sent out any earlier I don’t think. Also that’s terrible about the extra shipping charge as well, I’m assuming you had no choice but to pay it right?
I will admit all the goodies in this box were amazing, and as I love the Grisha series and the Six of Crow duology I was thrilled with all those bits, and the Shades of Magic badges too. I think to date Fairy Loot is the best subscription box I’ve seen so far, I can’t wait for next months and yeah I’m looking forwards to Vassa in the Night as well, hopefully it’s a great book! 😀

    1. That’s all right, I figured if I’m not going to be doing monthly hauls for a while I may as well do an unboxing post, and this has been my favourite subscription box month to date!
There was a lot of amazing items in there, and yeah it is expensive but definitely worth it. Plus as Fairy Loot is a UK box it’s a little cheaper for me when it comes to shipping! 😀
