Discussion Time: What Do You Do When Your Favourite Genre Becomes “Tired”?

A poor girl from a broken family finds a job working for royalty, but she soon finds herself in grave danger when a power she didn’t know she had emerges. Add in a love triangle between two brothers, a murderous queen, and potentially a rebellion and what book am I describing? If you said Red Queen you’re correct, but if you said Evermore you’re also correct.

There are probably more books out there which follow that same template, and after whole it gets boring. While everyone has one favourite genre, one they keep going back to over and over again, when you read the same stories and the same generic tropes just with different character names you can get a little tired.

The Great British Bake Off Book Tag

Next week is the final of The Great British Bake Off. I only started watching this show last year but now I’m hooked, and of course it seemed like the perfect time to take part in this tag (although if I was really organised I would have posted it back when the first episode aired. Oh well). I was tagged by The Orangutan Librarian. Thanks for the tag, I had a lot of fun answering the questions for this one so I hope you enjoy reading my answers just as much.

You’re Not Good Enough Book Tag

When the Pingback for this tag first appeared in my notifications I thought it was a strange and possibly passive aggressive insult, then I realised it was a tag and had to laugh at how ridiculous I was being. I was tagged by Anny at The Mystique Reader. Thanks so much for the tag Anny, I had a lot of fun with this one so I hope you enjoy reading my answers just as much.

Discussion Time: Why I Love Bookish Tropes

I’ve spoken a lot (a lot a lot) in the past about all the bookish tropes I hate. In fact if you’ve been following me long enough you’re probably already aware of a few of the tropes I can’t stand; insta-love, love triangles (unless they’re done right and honestly how often does that happen?), and girl hate are the main three.

However while there are tropes I can’t stand, and it’s the same for everyone, there are plenty of tropes out there I can’t get enough of. I talk so much about the tropes I can’t stand but I rarely talk about the tropes I love and why it is I love them so much.

The #NotAll Book Tag

When I talk about books I tend to talk in absolutes; we love all the books in our favourite genre and prefer the book to the adaptation, but there’s an exception to every rule and in this tag I get to talk about those exceptions. I was tagged by The Orangutan Librarian. Thanks for the tag, I had a lot of fun answering the questions for this one so I hope you enjoy reading my answers just as much.

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Bookish Worlds I’d Never Want to Live In

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Bookish Worlds I’d Never Want to Live In.

I love to travel, and I read a lot of fantasy books with incredible world-building; but for every couple of worlds I’d give anything to see with my own eyes there’s always one I’d never want to find myself in. I’d kill to visit Le Cirque des Rêves one night, or explore Red London for a day, but I know I wouldn’t survive five minutes as a tribute in the Hunger Games.

Discussion Time: Series Vs. Standalones

I was browsing Goodreads the other day for more books I could add to my already massive TBR list, when I came across an “upcoming” release I’d almost forgotten I was waiting for. This book is the last in a series that I first read when I was still in primary school, and maybe that’s given you a clue as to how long I’ve waited but in case it hasn’t this is a book that was supposed to be released in 1999.

Let that sink in for a moment; I’ve been waiting for a book, the last in the series, for nearly twenty years now, and looking on Amazon the release date has been set to 2030. At this rate I’m going to have to get this book delivered to my nursing home, but it did get me thinking and I came up with this discussion topic.

Reading Around the World: San Francisco

Reading Around the World is a feature that combines my love of travelling with my love of reading. Each month I plan to spotlight either a city I have visited, or a city I plan to visit in the near future, and recommend some of my favourite books set there. After all even if you can’t visit these cities yourself the next best thing has to be reading about them and living the experience through the eyes of the characters.
