Darrow is a rebel forged by tragedy. For years he and his fellow Reds worked the mines, toiling to make the surface of Mars inhabitable. They were, they believed, mankind’s last hope. Until Darrow discovered that it was all a lie, and that the Reds were nothing more than unwitting slaves to an elitist ruling class, the Golds, who had been living on Mars in luxury for generations.

In Red Rising, Darrow infiltrated Gold society, to fight in secret for a better future for his people.

Now fully embedded amongst the Gold ruling class, Darrow continues his dangerous work to bring them down from within. It’s a journey that will take him further than he’s ever been before—but is Darrow truly willing to pay the price that rebellion demands?

Title: Red Rising

Series: Red Rising Saga, #1

Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton

Release Date: January 28th 2014

Rating:

Four Stars

Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the colour-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars liveable for future generations.

Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.

But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet. Darrow – and Reds like him – are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.

Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies…even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

Looking Back at 2017: End of Year Recap

It’s the first day of 2018, so happy New Year everyone.

Has anyone made any New Year’s resolutions? I’ve made a few, some personal and some bookish, and I’m off to a good start but considering it’s only January 1st it would be bad if I wasn’t off to a good start.

As today is first day of 2018 it seems kind of fitting to post my recap for 2017. Overall I had a pretty good year, but more about that later. For me 2017 was filled with good books and personal achievements I never actually thought I would manage to do, and now I’m hoping for the same in 2018.

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books I’m Looking Forward to in 2018

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Books I’m Looking Forward to in 2018.

When it comes down to it there are so many books I can’t wait for, and plenty of them I couldn’t feature because they don’t have titles or covers or blurbs yet; The Muse of Nightmares, the second Warcross book, the third Nevernight book. It’s looking like 2018 is going to be a great year for book releases, the only issue I’ll have is finding the time to read them all.

Christmas Cuisine Book Tag

Although I was tagged at the end of 2016 it hasn’t taken me a year to get around to the Christmas Cuisine Book Tag because there are so many tags in my queue, but because by the time I reached this one it was August. It makes zero sense to post a Christmas tag in August, so I’ve had to wait until December to take part in this one. I was tagged by Kirstie at Upside-Down Books. Thanks so much for the tag Kirstie, I had a lot of fun with this one so I hope you enjoy reading my answers just as much.

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books on my Winter TBR List

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Books on my Winter TBR List.

Now that I’ve gotten through more of the ARCs I have that need to be read and reviewed for the new year I’m back to tackling my (humungous) TBR list. I had a mid-year to-read goal, and by now it’s pretty safe to say I’ve kind of failed at managing it, but hopefully the ten books listed below will be more manageable for me to get through than the fifty odd that were part of my mid-year to-read goal.

Discussion Time: Why are there More Female Protagonists than Male?

Chances are if you look around at your bookshelves right now, or browse the books you have on your Kindle, you’ll discover the majority of them have one thing in common and that’s that they all have female protagonists. It seems it’s a rare thing to come across a series with a male protagonist, either that or they’re out there and I’m just looking in the wrong places.
