Title: Release

Author: Patrick Ness

Series: N/A

Publisher: Walker Books

Release Date: May 4th 2017

Rating:

Four Stars

Inspired by Mrs Dalloway and Judy Blume’s Forever, Release is one day in the life of Adam Thorn, 17. It’s a big day. Things go wrong. It’s intense, and all the while, weirdness approaches…

Adam Thorn is having what will turn out to be the most unsettling, difficult day of his life, with relationships fracturing, a harrowing incident at work, and a showdown between this gay teen and his preacher father that changes everything. It’s a day of confrontation, running, sex, love, heartbreak, and maybe, just maybe, hope. He won’t come out of it unchanged. And all the while, lurking at the edges of the story, something extraordinary and unsettling is on a collision course.

Discussion Time: Diversity in YA Books

Diversity seems to be a hot topic in books now. Go back a few years and it was rare to see a book that featured a LGBT relationship, or a book where a POC character was the protagonist. Yes we’ve come a long way, but I think there’s still a long way to go. Diversity is important in books, I don’t think anyone would say it isn’t, so why isn’t there more of it?

Maybe it’s simply a case of slowly introducing it into the market, maybe in another few years there’ll be more books on the shelves that feature characters and relationships that aren’t focused on now. However, is it so bad to say that I’d like to see more diversity now rather than waiting for it?

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten of the Most Unique Books I’ve Read

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten of the Most Unique Books I’ve Read.

For me, what makes a book unique is when it goes in a completely different direction to what I assumed it would when I read the blurb. We’ve all had books like that; where the blurb only reveals a small part of the plot, smaller than it normally would, so you go in with few expectations only for them to be blown out of the water by the story the author has written instead.

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books You’ll Stay up All Night Reading so You Can Finish Them in One Go

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is a read in one sitting freebie, so I picked Top Ten Books You’ll Stay up All Night Reading so You Can Finish Them in One Go.

My blog’s name is Reading Every Night so I guess this felt like an appropriate pick for this week’s themed free-for-all. Besides we’ve all had those books we just couldn’t put down. You keep telling yourself it’ll be ‘just one more chapter’ but before you know it it’s four in the morning, you’ve finished your book, and haven’t been to sleep yet despite needing to get up for work in two hours.

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books on my Spring TBR List

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Books on my Spring TBR List.

There are so many books currently on my TBR list and all of them are books I’d like to get around to soon-ish, especially when you consider how long some of them have been on there. I’m normally not good at sticking to TBR lists given how I’m a mood reader, but this week’s Top Ten Tuesday theme I featured the books I definitely want to get around to ASAP, only time will tell whether I do or not.

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Favourite YA Couples from Books I’ve Read in the Past Year Part Two

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is an all about romance freebie, so I picked Top Ten Favourite YA Couples from Books I’ve Read in the Past Year Part Two.

This time last year there was a Valentine’s Day themed freebie for Top Ten Tuesday week, so I chose to feature my top ten favourite couples from YA books. This year I thought it would be fun to go back and choose some new books I’ve read within the past year which feature my new OTP’s. After reading Crooked Kingdom and A Court of Mist and Fury, among others, I have plenty of more OTP’s from my new favourite books I need to talk about more.

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books I Wish Had …

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Books I Wish Had …

A Sequel

When it comes to the last book in a series, or even just amazing standalone novels, I always have a problem accepting that there’s no more left. No more new adventures, no more from my favourite characters, and no more going back to this amazing world I discovered unless I re-read the book. So when it came to this week’s Top Ten Tuesday themed free-for-all I thought it was a perfect opportunity to talk about the books I’d love to see more of.

This isn’t going to be a case of me talking about the books I loved that I want to see more of just because they’re favourites of mine. Most of these are books where I felt the ending was left open enough that there is the potential for a sequel, maybe, one day in the future if I keep my fingers crossed.

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Favourite YA Book Covers; UK Edition Vs. US Edition

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is an all about visuals freebie, and while it was supposed to be about graphic novels I haven’t read nearly enough to make a list so I picked Top Ten Favourite YA Book Covers; UK Edition Vs. US Edition instead.

For reasons, unbeknownst to most of us, sometimes there are different covers for the UK edition and the US edition of the same book. While with most of the books I own I have been more than happy with the UK cover there are still a few where I’ve looked on at the copies people in the US have brought and gotten very jealous. There have even been a couple of very rare occasions where I’ve gone onto the US Amazon site and paid the extra shipping just to get the US covers, but that’s very rare.
