Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books on my Winter TBR List

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Books on my Winter TBR List.

Right now it’s all about Christmas, but in my mind the winter season runs from December all the way through to the end of February so expect to see a lot of 2019 releases on this list that I cannot wait to get my hands on. January and February seem to be the best months for book releases but that doesn’t mean I haven’t also featured a few older books which have spent way too long on my TBR list.

I’m not sure if I can say why I picked the books I did this week, why I’d class them as ‘Wintery Reads’ over any other book. Personally though when it starts getting darker earlier and colder every day all I want is to curl up with a book that’s more magical than deadly; so be prepared to see plenty of magical realism, fairytale retellings, and childhood nostalgia on my list this week.

Every story needs a good villain, and they need to be as well written as the heroes they go toe-to-toe with. As much as I always root for the heroes of every book I read there are times when I can’t help but be more fascinated with the villain, so for this week’s Top Ten Tuesday themed free pick I decided to focus on those villains; characters I loved the most and who I’d love to learn more about.

Romance Fails in Fiction Tag

Everyone loves a little romance and I’m no exception. One of my favourite things about reading is coming across a fluffy romance between two characters I can root for from the beginning. I love romance, as long as it’s well written. I was tagged by Meghan at Meghan’s Whimsical Explorations and Reviews. When I first saw this topic I thought it would be an easy one. I’ve read so many amazing books there are bound to be hundreds I could mash together to create one epic story, but as I started going through my Goodreads ‘read’ list I realised it was harder than I first thought. After all when it comes to all-time favourite books and series of mine, like The Night Circus and the Shades of Magic trilogy, how can they possible get any better?!

I don’t read a lot of short stories so when I first saw this week’s topic I thought I’d struggle to come up with a couple, let alone ten, books that I could feature. Then I looked through my Goodreads ‘read’ list and realised there were a lot of books that fit the theme; anthology collections, novellas from my favourite series, and even a book or two I managed to read in only a couple of hours.

I mentioned this in a previous Top Ten Tuesday post I took part in; I rarely DNF books, and I certainly haven’t DNF-ed enough of them to come up with ten for this week’s theme. Instead for this week I decided to go in the opposite direction, and instead of talking about the books I hated enough to DNF I’m talking about the books I loved enough to re-read.

My favourite genre is fantasy, and as well as the names sometimes being hard to pronounce (I know there are a few I’m still pronouncing incorrectly) they’re also pretty kick-ass. Granted names don’t really have much to do with saving the world but an epic name just stands out more, and fantasy is full of epic names.
