Book Blogging Firsts Tag

I’ve been blogging for nearly four years now, and in those four years so much has happened. I’ve refreshed my blog design a couple of times, expanded the range of posts I publish, been inspired to start writing again and grown as a writer. Today though I’m pushing all of that to one side and taking a trip down memory lane back to November 2015 when Reading Every Night was born.

Book Blogging Firsts Tag

I was tagged by Marie at Drizzle and Hurricane Books. Thanks so much for the tag Marie, it was a lot of fun (if a little cringe-y at times) going back and looking at my various book blogging firsts.

First blog name and design?

Reading Every Night wasn’t actually my first blog. I had three others before which all failed because I gave up on them. The first, which I started back in 2013, was called Life, Lollipops and Lazy Days and it wasn’t a book blog more of a ‘this is what’s happening in my life today so this is what I’m going to talk about’ blog.

This is the second blog I started on WordPress (the other two were on Blogger). I can’t exactly remember the first theme I had but it was either Nucleare (I’m about 90% sure it was this one), Selma or Dara.

My first design was terrible, I’m willing to admit it. It came about before I knew anything about design or to how to use the various design tools that are available out there for free. Luckily that’s changed, but it still took me nearly two years to re-design my blog the first time.

First blog post?

It was actually a Top Ten Tuesday post, Top Ten Quotes I Loved From Books I Read In the Past Year or So, and yes I planned the start of my blog in line with this post because I love bookish quotes so this was a prompt I really wanted to take part in. Since then the memes I’ve taken part in on Reading Every Night have varied, but my Top Ten Tuesday posts have been a constant.

Top Ten Tuesday #1

First book review?

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff.

I think my opinions on this book have changed a little (I re-read both Illuminae and Gemina when Obsidio was released) but they changed for the better. My books reviews had a pretty consistent format for about three years, I just slowly expanded and started writing more and more for each point I focused on.

Illuminae

First meme participated in?

Like I mentioned above it was a Top Ten Tuesday post; I jumped into memes right away and my first two posts were a Top Ten Tuesday one and a Waiting on Wednesday one. In the beginning memes really helped me grow my blog, and I’ve cycled through a few of them (Standalone Sunday’s and Wordless Wednesday’s the other two) but now I’ve just cut back to the one.

First discussion post?

It took me a while to start discussion posts (this was back when I had very little self-confidence and I was worried about publishing anything too controversial) so my first one wasn’t published until February 2017. It was on girl hate, which I kept seeing in books and that I hated seeing in books.

First book blog I followed?

I honestly have no idea. I can’t remember what I had for dinner last week so trying to remember the first blog I followed is pretty much impossible, especially when I’ve unfollowed some people in the nearly-four years I’ve been blogging.

I will give a shout-out to Marie (the same Marie who tagged me) as the first blogger I followed and started talking to regularly, which helped give me the confidence to start interacting with other bloggers more.

First follower?

Thank you WordPress for keeping track of my followers (in order of when they followed me) because if not for you I wouldn’t have been able to answer this question. My first follower was Emily from Emily Talks About Books.

First book I read because of other bloggers?

I started blogging around the same time Carry On was released so my feed was full of people either talking about how excited they were to finally pick up this book, or about how much they’d loved it. With hype like that I couldn’t resist, I had to read it myself (after reading Fangirl that is).

Carry On

I’m not going to lie some of these questions were quite hard, I’m not sure how I expected myself to remember my first theme or the first blog I followed. I think I may have tricked myself into thinking my memory was better than it actually was.

If anyone else wants to take part in the Book Blogging Firsts Tag then go for it, I’d love to see your answers so consider yourselves tagged as well.

But if not let me know in the comments what your first blog name was. Did you start your blogging journey on WordPress, or did you use Blogger or maybe another medium all-together? Can you remember the first blog you followed or who your first follower was, or is your memory as bad as mine seems to be?

  1. This is definitely a hard tag! First of all, thank you so much for tagging me, Beth ❤ I always love reading about how people started their blogs, and what they faced along the way, but thinking about it myself will be a challenge hahaha – hopefully, something useful and interesting will come out of it 🙂

I find your blog has remained consistent throughout the years but kept improving with each post and each change. I love your design now but I also loved the previous one. However, this one seems to go along with your theme and illustrate it much better – plus, it's super cute!

Content is what's most important and yours has been stellar from the start. I have never read any post I've found subpar or below your own impeccable standards, and that's always been an inspiration for me as well. Always do better, always strive to achieve better, and always keep it consistent.

I look forward to reading more from you and hope you have a lovely week ahead! ❤ Sorry it took so long to reply to this but it was buried beneath layers and layers of notifications…

    1. That’s all right, and I’m exactly the same. I think it’s so interesting seeing what got people started blogging, how they came up with their name and everything that goes with it. Oh it was a challenge for me too, everyone seems to have really in depth answers and I feel like a lot of mine was “well, I just felt like it”. 🙂
I figured finally go for a theme. I’ve loved seeing how my blog have evolved through past designs. This current one is my favourite by far though.
Thanks so so much Sophie, that really means a lot, and I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to reply to this comment. I took a bit of an unplanned hiatus and I’m only now getting back into blogging again. 🙂 ❤

      1. That’s all right! I’m so happy to see you around again, and I hope your hiatus wasn’t due to anything negative – it’s good to take some time off every once in a while, just to recharge and come back even more pumped to blog and read 🙂

      2. It’s good to be back again for sure, and it wasn’t all negative energy but there were a few negative emotions I was feeling that playing into the slump I went through which was one of the reasons I went on hiatus. Still I’m back now and feeling more than recharged! 🙂

  2. Thank you so much for tagging me, Beth, this looks like so much fun!! 😊❤ I love looking back on the start of my blogging journey, so it’s always fun to explore the old posts and first designs! This Tag actually seems perfect for my second Blogversary! 🙂

  3. I love this tag, it’s always interesting to see where someone started their blogging journey. 😀 I actually had a blog on Blogger first, where I only posted a few reviews. Then, a while later, I decided to start my current blog and I must say that I really prefer WordPress to Blogger. 🙂
Despite blogging for nearly 4 years now, I have never written a discussion post. I have no idea why? I always plan to write one, but never actually go through with it. Hopefully I’ll end up writing some of those in the future!
    Great post! ❤

    1. Oh definitely, I love reading people’s responses to tags like these and I loved taking part in this one myself. 🙂 Same here, I think before I started I read up on the pros and cons of WordPress vs Blogger and went for Blogger (I think because I already had a Google account so it was one less thing to sign up for you know) but now I’m glad I’ve made the switch to WordPress.
I enjoy discussion posts but it took me ages to get around to them as well so I know what you mean it can be hard to actually get started on them. Hopefully yes. 🙂
      Thanks so much. 🙂 ❤️

  4. Hey Beth!!
I really loved reading this post and learning about how your blog came to be! That’s awesome that you’ve been consistently blogging since November 2015. It’s a great accomplishment 🙂 I definitely made quite a few of those “this is what I’m doing today” type of blogs before haha, but they never stuck around. I think it really was being involved in the amazing book blog community that motivated me to continue blogging!
I think I mentioned this before, but I really do love your new theme, which fits your blog name perfectly! I am curious what you use to make your graphics?
Carry On and Illuminae are such great books! I’m glad to see that they were important landmarks for you in terms of blogging 🙂
    Great post ❤ 🙂

    1. Thanks Sophie, I’m glad you enjoyed this post because I had so much fun writing it. 🙂
Yeah it’s been a long nearly four years but I’ve been determined, and I still love blogging just as much now as when I first started out. I almost feel like that’s the logical step when you first decide to start a blog, my life was never consistently interesting enough to keep up with that though. 🙂 Besides the book blogging community is too amazing to be missing out on. 😀
Thanks, I figured go with a bit of a theme. I used a load of different programs really, a little bit of Photoshop and Illustrator, a little Paint and an app called Word Swag for the words. It’s kind of made up of everything I could think of to pull it together.
Oh definitely, and they’re such big books so I feel like it would have been impossible for me to have passed them by. 😀
      Thanks so much. 🙂 ❤️

      1. That takes a lot of dedication Beth 🙂 I agree! Looking back, the reason why I never stick with my previous blogs was because life wasn’t consistently interesting to write about haha, while there are always things to talk about when it comes to the book blogging community 🙂
That’s cool that you use a mix of different programs including Photoshop and Illustrator!

      2. At least with books we’ll hopefully never run out of things to say, there are always going to be new books released and even if not we’ll always have old favourites to go back to.
Yeah I probably could have created it all in Illustrator for example but I go with whatever I find it easiest to use for the different aspects. Throwback from my uni days. 😀

      3. Very cool 🙂 I used photoshop quite a lot before although illustrator was a bit of an enigma to me! That’s great that you are able to use it. Did you learn these things in uni? :O

  5. Ahaha well I have to say your first design definitely looked a LOT better than my first design did! I don’t even know what I was thinking — looking at the old graphics I have saved from then makes me cringe so much. But at least I’ve grown haha!

And I definitely remember when I was starting out, Marie was a big part of my blogging as well! She definitely made me feel super welcome in the community — and the same goes for you too! (Wow this is giving me ALL the nostalgia 🙈)

    1. Ha, we all have cringey first designs don’t we? It has to be part of starting out as a blogger, what’s important is that we learn. I can’t really remember your first design May, but I’m sure it wasn’t as bad as you think. We’re always harder on ourselves than other people are after all. 🙂
Marie is so lovely, I honestly know if I’d still be blogging now if she hadn’t made me feel so welcome. ❤️ Yeah it was such a lot of fun being able to look back over the (almost) four years I’ve been blogging now.

    1. That’s all right, and thanks. 🙂 ❤️ Yeah it’s been four years (or there abouts) in the making but I love where my blog has ended up.
I can’t wait to see your answers, and yeah I found some questions a little hard, but worth it in the end! 🙂

      1. That’s awesome! I’m in and around the 4 year mark too… I should look into that 😛
That’s good! I’m in the process of improving mine… we shall see where that goes!
Aw, thanks, they look a little tough, but I’m excited to get to it! 🙂 ❤️

  6. Ahh I love your answers so much, Beth, thank you for doing this tag and thank you so much for the sweet shout out! ❤ I have to say, I feel quite proud that I remembered all of these blog designs over the years and I'm even happier to know that I saw them ALL, just as well 😀 It's so great to see how much you've grown and most importantly, how you kept on blogging for so long ❤ ❤

    1. Thanks so much Marie, and thanks for tagging me. ❤️ I really loved being able to take part in this tag (and of course I had to shout-out one of the first amazing bloggers I discovered on this site!). 🙂
Ha, yeah I keep my designs a long time but I guess that helps them stick on people’s memories. Oh definitely, it’s not always about how long we’ve been blogging but how much we’ve grown blogging as well right?!
Either way I’m hoping to keep blogging for a while still to come as well. 🙂 ❤️

That’s all right, and I think shameful answers are part of this tag, but it’s a lot of fun seeing how far we’ve come as bloggers. I’ll look forwards to seeing your answers! 🙂 ❤️
      Thanks again. ❤️
