April Recap

Where is the year going? The fact that we’re now in May is a shock to my system, but at least I can say I did more last month than I did in March, so it doesn’t feel like April flew by without me noticing it.

ReDesign April Recap Header

I got through six books in April, which seems to be my magic number because that’s how many I read last month as well, and I managed to maintain my blogging schedule and take part in Camp NaNo at the same time. I still took an unplanned mini-break from blogging, and I didn’t win at Camp NaNo but I’m doing better, and that something.

ReDesign Reading Update Title

  • Wicked Saints by Emily A. Duncan — Three stars
  • Renegades by Marissa Meyer — Four stars
  • Archenemies by Marissa Meyer — Four stars
  • Last Bus to Everland by Sophie Cameron— Four stars
  • Daisy Jones & the Six by Evelyn Hugo — Four stars
  • The Near Witch by V.E Schwab — Four stars

April Reading Update (1)

Favourite read; Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid which probably shouldn’t be a surprise as Evelyn Hugo was my favourite read of last month but again this was just an incredible read.

Least favourite read; Archenemies by Marissa Meyer which I just expected so much more from, especially after the ending to Renegades. Still here’s hoping the third book delivers.

April Reading Update (2)

I may not be on top of things when it comes to blogging and writing, but at least I can say I’m on top of reading. Like the past couple of months I ended April two books ahead of my Goodreads Reading Challenge schedule, so let’s see if I can do it again this month.

April GR Reading Challenge

ReDesign Writing Update Title

This month I took part in Camp NaNo, hoping to ‘catch-up’ on my WIP because based on the goal I set myself at the star of the year I’ve fallen way behind. I set myself a goal of 34k words, and based on my previous writing updates this year it should come as no surprise when I say I didn’t manage to reach it. I wrote just under 15.5k words which I’m still proud of, it’s more than I wrote in January, February and March combined even though it fell short of my goal.

April Writing Update (2)

I’ve actually given up on trying to ‘catch-up’ on the goal I set at the beginning of the year. I’m not giving up on my WIP I’ve just realised that the goal I set myself is no longer achievable, every month I keep trying to catch up but I only fall further and further behind, so going forwards I’m going to re-set it.

ReDesign Life in General Title

So much seemed to happen in April, it was a busy month but busy in a good way (except for the few days I was bed-ridden thanks to a nasty stomach bug, but I’m not really counting that).

Highlights:

  • I went to see Dumbo with my mum, which I really enjoyed despite the mixed reviews it’s gotten from critics. Like the classic animated version it still made me cry. I also went to the midnight showing of Avengers: Endgame the day it was release and it was incredible. There aren’t enough words, but it was an amazing conclusion to Infinity War and to certain characters’ stories.

  • It was my friend’s birthday last month and to celebrate we went to see the Aladdin musical in London. I’ve been wanting to see it for ages now, me and my friend kept saying we’d go, but it was well worth the wait.

April Life in General (3)

  • I’m sticking with learning Dutch through the Duolingo app, which is a little surprising because I know myself and I do sometimes have problems seeing things through. Currently I’ve maintained a 95 day streak and I’m on crown level 71.
  • Last is the most exciting news of April; I am officially a home-owner. The property I brought with my friend is now officially ours and we picked up the keys on the 30th. It’s been such a long process but now we can get started on the fun stuff; redecorating.

ReDesign Book Haul Title

I only got two books in April but I’m really falling behind on reading my new releases. I have so many books, and not just from last month but from February and March too, which I still need to find the time to read.

ReDesign Looking Forwards Title

Last month I managed to catch up on blogging – somewhat. I still have some reviews sitting in my queue that I need to write – and I took part in Camp NaNo to help catch up on my writing so this month I feel like I can take a step back and focus on reading again. Maybe by the end of May I’ll be able to say I’ve gotten through more than six books.

I have one more eARC for King of Fools which I need to read and review so that’s a priority of mine, but other than that I’m not going to set even a rough TBR list, I’m just going to read whatever I feel like whenever I feel like it.

The Shadow Game Trilogy

I also have a few day trips planned for May, something to feature in my next monthly recap so I don’t seem too boring, but other than that I think most of my time, money and energy is going to go on re-decorating.

How was your April?

How many books did you read last month, and what were your favourite and least favourite reads of April? Did you take part in Camp NaNo, did you manage to hit your goal or like me did you fall short?

Have you seen Avengers: Endgame? What did you think, were you happy with how things ended for your favourite characters or heartbroken? What was the most exciting thing that happened to you in April?

Happy reading.

  1. Congratulations on your new house! That’s so awesome!
I also read six books this past month and I was so proud, lol. I am definitely in a good reading mood now, and I’m trying my best to take advantage of it while I can. Since school has gotten me really busy recently, I feel like in a few weeks I won’t have as much time as I do now to read, so I definitely want to get ahead of my Goodreads challenge as I can.
Even though you didn’t win Camp Nano, you still made a significant progress on your writing, so yay! I haven’t wrote anything in a loooong time and my fingers are itching to get back to it. I really need to make writing more of a priority next months!
Wishing you an amazing May! 💛

    1. Thanks so much, that was definitely the best part of the last month! 🙂
It’s a solid number of reads to get through isn’t it? We should definitely be proud. 🙂 Yeah better to do as much reading as you can when you have the chance. I’m just trying to steadily keep up rather than get too far ahead. 🙂
It’s worth making writing a priority, it’s something I’m good about doing during NaNo months but not during other times. I hope you manage to get back into writing, I’m sure you’ve got plenty of good ideas to get started on! 🙂 ❤️

  2. Glad you liked renegades, archenemies and daisy and the six! That’s great you wrote so much, even if it fell short of your goal. Congrats on getting so far with the dutch and that’s amazing you’re a homeowner!! Sounds like you had a great month 😀

    1. Yeah all in all a great month. I’m definitely going to add more of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s books to my TBR list, and overall I’m happy with what I wrote which is the main thing. Thanks, and yes finally getting the keys to my new home was the best part of the month. 😀
      Thanks. ❤️

  3. Congrats on your new house Beth!! How neat is that?! Redecorating would be my favorite part!! ❤️ Honestly I find it so hard to keep up with writing, blogging, reading and everything else. It sounds like your month was incredible even if you are a little behind.

    1. Thanks so much Dani, yeah I’m so excited especially now me and my friend can get onto the re-decorating side of things which is the fun side after all. 😀
There’s sometimes just too much going on and that’s what a lot of April was. Maybe in May I’ll be able to catch up a little on my writing. 😀

  4. Congrats on being a homeowner, Beth!! That’s a great accomplishment 💖 And it’s so amazing you were able to write 15k words! I’m glad you’re reevaluating your writing goals to make them more realistic for you (I need to do that too haha!) I’m also super glad you enjoyed Endgame! I’ll probably see it this month but I already know most of the spoilers haha. Luckily I’m not too invested in Marvel that I care about knowing how it ends. 😎

    1. Thanks so much May. ❤ Yeah it's been a long time coming but we finally made it and I know it will be worthwhile in the end.
I learnt last year when it came to my Goodreads Reading Challenge if a goal is too much for me I need to re-evaluate it rather than let it stress me out. It's better overall for my mental health.
Oh that's a shame about the spoilers, but hopefully you'll still be able to enjoy the movie despite them (it is a great film). 😀

  5. Hey Beth!!
Sounds like it was a busy month for you! Congrats on everything you’ve accomplished! It’s amazing that you’ve read 6 books, and I am so, so happy that you enjoyed Evelyn Hugo!!
Even though you haven’t reached your Camp Nano goal, I think writing 15.5K words isn’t a small feat. What’s important is that you’re moving forward in the story. To be honest I think word counts are overrated. Some people write quickly while others write slowly and methodically and it’s all okay. The most important part is to write your story (and only you can write it!) however long it takes. Keep at it!! Looking forward to more WIP updates 🙂
That’s great that you’re able to learn Dutch, even with everything else going on! And you’re a homeowner!!! I am so proud of you!!! Are you moving in this month?! Have you gotten the furniture yet?! Is it closer to work?
By the way, I’ve been trying out green tea! Recently I bought loose leaf blueberry green tea and loving it. I like that the taste (and caffeine content!) is a bit lighter than black tea, so it may be perfect to drink in the afternoon 🙂
    Wishing you a wonderful May ❤ ❤ 🙂

    1. Oh definitely, April was busy but it was a lot of fun as well so it wasn’t like one of those busy months that tend to just drain you.
Yeah for me any writing I do is an achievement. As much as I love writing I’m very good at pushing it back because I keep thinking there are so many other things which need my attention first (like blogging, I always focus on blogging before writing even when I don’t need to as much you know?)
It will still be a little while before we’re ready to move in. We need to get the bathrooms done and we want to get the carpet replaced with floorboards and obviously it makes no sense to move in before that work is done. We’re hoping by the end of June/beginning of July, but obviously I’ll keep you updated! 😀
Yeah green tea is very light. I’ve never tried loose leaf green tea but I do love the fruity flavours. My favourite is anything with either apple or cherry in.
      Thanks, you too. 🙂 ❤

      1. That’s great to hear that you had a fun time in April even though it was busy 🙂
It’s definitely tough to balance blogging, reading, writing and everything else! At times we have to choose one or the other. I’ve been finding myself gravitating towards writing more lately, because I am really liking my story and I want to find every available moment to write some more. However I’ve definitely had other months when I am in the mood for reading or blogging. It really depends 🙂 I think as long as we are loving what we’re doing in the moment, then that’s good!
Sounds like there’s still some work to be done in your new home, but I’m sure the time will fly by and you guys will move in soon 🙂 I’m so excited for you!! I am not a home owner yet (but getting there hahaha)
I’ll keep an eye out for those tea flavours. I haven’t had cherry-flavoured tea before but it does sound interesting 🙂

      2. I mean I do love my current WIP and at the moment I am very inspired by it (taking part in Camp NaNo has kind of helped me get back on track in that regard) I dunno just in my mind I feel like blogging has to come before writing. Like blogging is a job I need to do before I can start the fun of writing (not that I see blogging as a job or anything, it’s hard to describe). I guess I just need to become better at time management.
Oh we’re already getting quotes for the work that needs to be done. It’s going to be a lot of work but it will be fun work so I’m looking forwards to it.
It’s amazing, one of my favourite tea flavours actually! 😀

      3. Yeah I know what you mean 🙂 I definitely feel like I have a duty as a blogger as well. No matter how busy I get, I have to write my 2 blog posts a week and reply to comments before I do any writing haha. I guess it is because I have my blog readers to be accountable to, however when it comes to writing, I am only accountable to myself. So I feel bad when I don’t blog enough XD
I think if you try your best and write as much as you can with the time that you have, then it’s good. You’re busy with work, your new home, blogging, reading, and I’m sure plenty of other things. It’s great when there is time to write, but sometimes there isn’t and that’s okay 🙂 Doing our best is good enough.

      4. That definitely makes sense, I feel guilty when I miss out on replying to comments for a couple of days, I feel like I’m letting people down, but the only person I’m letting down when I don’t write is myself. 🙂
Yeah I figured once the new home is sorted I’ll have lots more time, and then I can catch up on writing and blogging in some ways as well. 🙂

      5. Same sentiments here 🙂 Wishing you best of luck with your new home! It sounds like it’ll be exciting, even though it might be a lot of work to get there 🙂

  6. I’m really excited to finally read some Taylor Jenkins Reid soon-ish. I’ve heard so many good things about both Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones & The Six. I’m definitely too emotional to watch Dumbo in the cinema, I would 10/10 cry too hard. Maybe I’ll just wait until the DVD comes out lol. It’s so cool that you are currently learning dutch!! I would love to learn more languages but i’m super inconsistent and lose motivation too soon because I’m hard on myself and my progress. Fingers crossed that your streak continues! c:

    1. Yeah there seems to be a lot of hype for her books at the moment but from what I read it’s all well deserved hype. I hope you love both Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones, they’re such incredible reads.
Well it was dark in the cinema so no one could tell I was near tears, and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one either.
I’m normally the same. I’m a terrible procrastinator as well but sometimes there are exceptions; blogging is one and it seems learning Dutch is another. 😀

  7. I thought April would feel like a long month for me; after all, I had to wait for GoT and Endgame. But turns out it flew by in a blink! I went to the morning and midnight screening of Endgame (can you believe in my country there are theaters that showed Endgame at 5 AM??) and they were amazing! The Near Witch has been around the blogosphere lately, I’m intrigued! Have a great May!

    1. I feel like sometimes the more you have to look forwards to in a month the faster it flies by. See I can kind of believe that because I think it was the same at some of the cinemas in London showing Endgame. There were screenings every hour pretty much 24 hours a day for the first few days!
Yeah I think because it’s been re-released everyone’s been finally able to get their hands on a copy, at least that’s why I picked it up. I love V.E. Schwab’s books. 🙂

  8. Ahhh Beth congratulations on being a home-owner, this is so exciting!! I hope you’ll show off your gorgeous bookshelves once you put them together and everything 🙂
I’m so happy you managed to write a little bit last month, this is so great! No matter the number of words, at least you’re going forward and that’s what matters 🙂
I hope you’ll have a beautiful May and wonderful trips! 😀

    1. Thanks so much Marie. It’s so exciting, and I can’t wait now to get in and get decorating! I already have some idea of how I want my room (and my bookshelves of course) to look. 🙂
Yeah that’s the way I see it, I always aim high so even if I fall short I’ve still achieved something. If I’d have set my goal to 15.5k words I wouldn’t have written that much.
Thanks so much, I hope you have a great May as well. 🙂 ❤️

  9. You read so many books that are on my TBR list 😀 Wicked Saints especially. Very excited to get my hands on it (hopefully sooner than later!)
Congratulations on the house purchase!! Must be sooo exciting. Now the decorating fun begins!

    1. Oh well I hope find the time to get around to them soon then, and I hope you enjoy Wicked Saints more than I did as well. I mean it was a good reads but I think I expected a little more. I’d be interested in seeing what you think when you have read it.
Thanks, and yeah I can’t wait to get started. Me and my friend have so many ideas for what we want everything to look like. 🙂 ❤️

  10. You had quite the month Beth! It looks like you had a steady reading and writing month. Even though you didn’t meet your goal, I think that you even wrote is still progress.
That’s awesome that you’ve got a 71 day streak on Duolingo. I’m at a 135 day streak for both German and French. I’m trying to achieve a 365 day streak, but we’ll see.

I’m glad you enjoyed Endgame. I can’t wait to see it. I’m hoping this month, but we’ll see. This month is going to busy for me in preparation for my trip!
That’s cool that you enjoyed Dumbo. I never liked the original, so I’m not going to be seeing this one.
Lastly, and most importantly congratulations on owning your house! That must be super exciting! 😀 Here’s to a beautiful May! ❤️

    1. Yeah it’s been a busy April, but in so many good ways. 🙂 I’m always happy with whatever I manage to write, the way I look at it I set my goal high so even if I fail I still achieve more than I thought I would (and more than I would have if I’d set my Camp NaNo goal to only 15k words).
Oh good luck with getting to 365 days! You’ve got an impressive streak so far for sure! 🙂
Endgame is amazing, I’m sure you’ll love it but yeah it’s three hours long so finding the time for it when you’re busy is harder than you’d think isn’t it?
I think I enjoyed Dumbo because I loved the original as well, so yeah that’s probably a good idea.
Thanks so much. Now I’m just so excited to get in and start redecorating. 🙂 ❤️

      1. Yes! Every word counts, so it’s all a win!
Thanks, I’ve been doing it before bed so it’s become part of my routine so I’m hoping I keep it up. I hope you keep it up as well! 😀
I keep hearing it’s 3 hours which is crazy, but I also hear it’s so good so it’ll all be worth it! I know, I hope I can find time to watch it this month, but we shall see. 3 hours is a long time to spare, especially when you work all day!
Yay, that sounds like so much fun, I hope you had fun decorating your place! 😀 ❤️
