February Recap

February was a month where I didn’t get a lot of reading or blogging done; not as much as I normally do and not as much as I would have liked to. Work took over my whole life, but now February has ended things have calmed down and I’ll be back to my regular reading and blogging schedules.

ReDesign February Recap Header

I only got through four books (five if you could the one I DNF-ed) but I did finally pick up King of Scars, one of my most anticipated releases of this year, and February is a short month so I can’t really be blamed for not getting through as many books as I normally do (which is what I’m telling myself).

ReDesign Reading Update Title

  • Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo — Five stars Four stars
  • Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo — Five stars
  • Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo — Five stars
  • King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo — Four stars
  • Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand — DNF-ed at Chapter 13

February Reading Update (1)

Favourite read; Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo which may have been a re-read but it’s still an incredible book with so many twists that will always have me hooked.

Least favourite read; Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand which I couldn’t finish. I couldn’t get into the story and I found it so hard to connect with any of the main characters.

February Reading Update (2)

I may have only read four (five) books this month but I’m still ahead of my Goodreads Reading Challenge, only by two books though instead of three back at the end of January. One of the good things about setting my goal much lower this year is that I can have months like this one, where I don’t read nearly as much as I plan to but I still don’t have to worry about falling behind.

February GR Reading Challenge

ReDesign Writing Update Title

This is going to be a very short section this month, because my writing update for February is that there is no update. I didn’t write anything, and part of me wants to blame that on work but in a way it was a mixture of work, blogging and reading. In my spare time I had a choice as to whether I could write, or whether I could read and blog, and I chose the latter.

February Writing Update

I’m going to stretch myself in March though. Right now my progressive word count should be 18k, and by the end of the month it should be 26k so in my next recap I want to be able to say I’ve completely caught up and written at least 26k words.

ReDesign Life in General Title

Even though work took over there were still a few things happening in my life which weren’t work-related; after all, it’s all about that healthy work/life balance right? My mental health is still in a good place, and I’ve been making plenty of plans for the future so hopefully in the next few months this section (like my Writing Update section) should be more full.

Highlights:

  • I attended the Samantha Shannon event at Waterstones Piccadilly for the release of The Priory of the Orange Tree. It was a great evening, Samantha Shannon is one of my favourite authors so whenever there’s an event of hers on I’ll always make an effort to attend.

February Life in General (1)

  • I binge-watched season one of The Umbrella Academy, which is incredible and a new favourite TV of mine. I love the dynamic between all the Hargreeve children and I can’t wait for season two (if there is a season two, fingers crossed).

February Life in General (2)

  • I’m making strong progress on learning Dutch using the Duolingo app; I’ve maintained a 48 day streak and  I’m currently at level 31.

ReDesign Book Haul Title

Again I didn’t buy many books this month, but the two that I did buy are two of my most anticipated releases for this year and I can’t wait to dive right into them.

I did have a copy of The Gilded Wolves at one point, but I had to return it because the pages hadn’t been cut properly and I haven’t had any luck finding another copy.

ReDesign Looking Forwards Title

In March I’m going to be taking part in the Women’s History Month Reading Challenge hosted by Margaret at Weird Zeal. I haven’t got a set reading list, because I’ve learnt from experience I don’t do well with those, but I’m going to try and get through as many of the prompts as I can.

February Looking Forwards (1)

I definitely want to pick up The Kingdom of Cooper (which can cross off the WOC MC square), The Priory of the Orange Tree (which can cross off the Multiple Female POVs square) and In An Absent Dream (which I think can cross off the No Romantic Subplot square). Those are the only three books I have planned though, so if anyone has any recommendations for the other squares let me know.

February Looking Forwards (2)

I’m going to get back in writing again, which I know I said last month but this month I should actually have the time to write, and I will be publishing the post I had planned for February week which goes into a little more detail about my new WIP.

How was your February?

Did you also read less books than you’d planned to last month, or are you on a strong reading binge and getting through more books than you normally would?

Have you seen The Umbrella Academy, what other shows would you recommend for a fan of that show? Are you taking part in the Women’s History Month Reading Challenge, or is there another reading challenge you’ll be taking part in?

Happy reading.

  1. Attending Samantha Shannon’s Picadilly event was 100% the highlight of my February. I thought she spoke SO well (as always). Have you read Priory yet? I’ve just about reached the halfway mark!

I’ve heard quite a few people talking about The Umbrella Academy so I am very curious now! I think I might have to earmark it as my next series to watch.

I think it’s so cool that you’re learning Dutch. I’ve never heard of the Duolingo app, is it easy to use? I’ve always been terrible at languages but I’m keen to learn. 🙂

    1. It’s brilliant, and yes every time I’ve seen her at events like these I’ve learnt so much about her books and her writing process. She really is an incredible author. No I haven’t managed to start it yet. I’m hoping to get to it next week. What do you think of it so far then?
I’d definitely recommend it. It’s now one of my favourite TV shows and definitely very binge-able.
Yeah very easy to use. It’s a lot of fun as well. I’ve got a fair way with Dutch but I still have pretty far to go still.

  2. Yay! Priory! I’m sure the event was amazing. My copy is on it’s way from Book depository. I’m keen!
I also watched Umbrella Academy this month. It’s so weird but enjoyable.
I’ve seen a few people have trouble with Sawkill Girls. I thought about reading it but then decided probably better skip it.
Well done on the reading challenge front and good luck for March! 😊

    1. It really was, I haven’t found the time to start Priory yet but I’m definitely going to get around to it as soon as possible. I’m sure your copy will arrive soon, and that it’ll be worth the wait!
That’s a good way to describe it, and surprisingly addictive too. 🙂
Yeah I can’t say it’s a book I’d recommend, I know people have enjoyed it but it just wasn’t for me I guess.
Thanks, I hope you have to good March Ashley. 🙂 ❤️

  3. I’m sorry to hear February was a little hectic at work, I hope that March will be a little more relaxed and that you’ll have time to breathe, read and blog and write a little more, too! ❤ It's funny, despite loving it so much, writing always tens to come last when I'm being very busy and I don't make nearly enough time for it in these kind of situations haha. I hope you'll get to write more next month ❤ ❤
    Have a lovely March, Beth! ❤ ❤

    1. Thanks Marie. 🙂 ❤️ Yeah already March is a little less hectic so fingers crossed it’ll stay that way. I’m going to try and re-prioritise as well so I have time to read and write and blog no matter what.
I feel like sometimes writing requires more effort than anything else. That’s always why I tend to leave it till last/put it off, but no more because I really need to get back into it again.
Thanks so much Marie, and yes I hope you have a brilliant March as well. 🙂 ❤️ ❤️

    1. Thanks so much, and yes definitely start it. 🙂 I haven’t seen too many reviews but I loved it so much I stayed up way too late binge watching as many episodes as I could before I had to go to sleep! Worth it though. 😀

    1. It is good; I haven’t seen a lot of reviews for it but it’s one of my new favourite TV shows. I think even if you don’t enjoy superhero stories there’ll be something about The Umbrella Academy you like, it’s not the typical story you think of when you think ‘superhero’ you know? It focuses on the family dynamic between the siblings more than anything else I think.

  4. I’ve read The Umbrella Academy thanks to my love affair with My Chemical Romance, but I haven’t yet watched the show. As for my reading, like you I set my goal low and I actually find I’m reading a lot more. Perhaps because there’s less pressure 🙂

    1. Ah I’m the other way around; I haven’t read it but I have seen the show (and tbh I loved the show so much I may have to read it now).
That’s what I think; I’m a mood reader so if I’m feeling pressured to read I won’t enjoy it and then I won’t be in the mood to read. Lesson learnt for the future I guess. 🙂

    1. Yeah the main problem I had was that I didn’t like the characters and couldn’t connect with them, and if I can’t connect with the characters I’m just like “why am I reading this?”. I may go back to Sawkill Girls one day, but it’s not high on my list or anything. Still I’m glad you enjoyed it for the most part. 🙂

  5. Can I just say, the two books you bought have GORGEOUS covers! I’m actually in love with them!!

Congrats on staying ahead of your GR reading challenge – it’s always a good feeling 😀

    1. They really are right?! Even if I hadn’t brought them because they’re books I can’t wait to get started on I would have brought them for the covers! 😀
Thanks so much, I’m doing better than I was last year and yes it’s definitely a good feeling. 🙂 ❤️

  6. I’m sorry that work took over most of your month; I hope your March is much better! I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed The Umbrella Academy! I can’t wait to start it, I read the comics years ago so I’m very excited to get to it!
    Happy reading! 🙂

    1. Ehh, it happens every now and again, mostly in February just because of the amount of work that needs to be done (it’ll be the same next February as well).
Oh it was brilliant, I haven’t read the comics but I’ve already binge watched the series twice because I love it so much. I’m keeping my fingers tightly crossed we get a second season!
Thanks Meghan, happy reading to you too. 🙂 ❤️

      1. At least you can anticipate when you’ll be really busy!
I have a strong feeling there will be a second season, but I”m just so happy to hear you loved it that much! 😀 ❤️
        Thank youu! 😀

  7. I completely agree w Sawkill Girls!!! I tried so hard to fall in love with it, because it seemed so cool and mysterious + it featured a f/f romance and an ace character, so i was just overwhelmed with happiness for the book overall. but then the antagonist monster thing was SO WEIRD and made no sense. And the characters were impossible to connect to emotionally. so much needless drama, I think I DNF’d at 40%

also I’m so excited about Priory of the Orange Tree, i’ve heard nothing but amazing things lskdf
I nearly bought a copy at the bookstore over the weekend, but had to buy this other book for school instead 😥 HEARTBREAK. it was the saddest scene to ever happen in that store.

also I just finished The Diabolic and MY HEART AND SPIRIT BELONG TO NEMESIS. she can truly just have it, i’ll donate it to her because i worship her 10000000%. THAT ENDING!!!!!!! I ACTUALLY DON’T KNOW HOW TO FEEL. but I felt so invested in, Tyrus, Nem, and Donia. there were so many plot twists i had to take breaks to recover

    1. Yes on the surface there is so much going for it. I love the rep, I rarely come across books with asexual characters, but the main thing for me was that I could not connect with any of the characters. That always puts me off books because if I can’t root for the characters then why am I reading you know? I may give it another try one day but it’s not high on my list that’s for sure!
Oh there seems to be a lot of hype for The Priory, I can’t wait to get started on it. I’ve been there though, having to buy books for school instead :/ hopefully you’ll be able to get a copy for soon (or at least spend your money on non school books soon).
I am so glad you enjoyed The Diabolic Malanie! That’s a favourite of mine and I cannot wait for the next book in the series. Also if you don’t know what to do after that ending wait until you finish The Empress. Nothing can prepare you for it that’s for sure! 🙂

  8. So happy that you’re joining in with the Women’s History Month Challenge! 😀 Those look like some great books to read for March – I’m really excited (if a little intimidated) to read The Priory of the Orange Tree, and that’s incredible that you got to meet the author! Looks like February was a great month of reading lots of Leigh Bardugo, which is always a win in my opinion 😀

    1. Yeah I’ve been looking for a readathon to take part in so when you tagged me I figured why not? I’m just going to try and cross off as many squares as I can. 🙂
I’m definitely a little intimidated to read The Priory, but I have a feeling it will be one of those books where I don’t notice the pages because I’m so hooked! It was so much fun meeting Samantha Shannon, and yeah if I couldn’t get through many books this month at least I got through Leigh Bardugo’s! 😀
