Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books I Meant to Read in 2018 but Didn’t Get To

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Books I Meant to Read in 2018 but Didn’t Get To.

At the start of every year I have the best intentions when it comes to all the books I’m going to try and read, but then by the end of every year I’ve always fallen short. One of the downfalls of being a mood reader is that I can never stick to TBR lists so I always get to January 1st and find there are a few books still on my TBR list that shouldn’t be there, and I feel like there were more from 2018 than there usually are.

top ten tuesday '19 #3

For a Muse of Fire by Heidi Heilig

Heidi Heilig wrote one of my favourite time travel duologies, so I was thrilled when I discovered she had a new series in the works. I got a copy of For a Muse of Fire for Christmas from my sister, so even though I didn’t get around to it in 2018 I will definitely get around to it quite quickly this year.

The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw

I saw some incredible reviews for The Wicked Deep, and based on what they said this seemed like the perfect release to pick up in the autumn season. Autumn 2018 came and went, and still this book remained on my TBR list. Maybe autumn 2019 will be the season I finally get around to it.

The Mermaid by Christina Henry

Whenever I see there’s a new release from Christina Henry I have to buy it right away, but then it sits on my TBR list for ages. That’s the way it went for Lost Boy and it’s the way it’s going for The Mermaid. I just have to be in a certain mood for her books and as of yet I haven’t been in the right mood for The Mermaid.

Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas

The last book in the Throne of Glass series was sky high on my most anticipated releases of 2018 list. I had big plans to re-read the whole series, finally picking up both The Assassin’s Blade and Tower of Dawn for the first time, in preparation for its release. Obviously that never happened, largely due to my reading slump at the end of 2018.

A Reaper at the Gates by Sabaa Tahir

After the way A Torch Against the Night ended I thought for sure the second A Reaper at the Gates was released I’d be in a rush to finally read it. But no. This is definitely a priority of mine for 2019, I plan to re-read the first two books and then dive straight into this one to find out how the story continues.

The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton

It was the cover that first drew me to this book and the hype surrounding its release caught my attention. I’ve seen some positive reviews since then, most of which have mentioned the incredible world building which is a weakness of mine, so hopefully I’ll be able to read it in 2019.

Restore Me by Tahereh Mafi

The ending to Ignite Me never felt like the end of the Shatter Me series so I was thrilled when it was announced more books were being released. I want more from Juliette, Warner and Kenji (especially Kenji), and based on the reviews I’ve seen when I finally do pick up Restore Me I’m going to love it.

The Forbidden Wish by Jessica Khoury

This book has spent so long on my TBR list; it’s a fairytale retelling (which I love) of Aladdin and all the reviews I’ve read have been positive (so I know I’m going to love it too). I’m not sure why The Forbidden Wish is still on my TBR list, but I’m going to make a real effort to cross it off soon.

The Brightsiders by Jen Wilde

I added Jen Wilde’s books to my summer TBR list for when I was on holiday, and while I managed to cross off Queens of Geek I didn’t make it to The Brightsiders. With a new book (which sounds amazing) by Jen Wilde coming out later this year I’m hoping I’ll be able to finally pick up this one come summer 2019.

City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare

I had such big plans for this series. I’ve been steadily making my way through all of Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunter books and my plan was to read the second half of The Mortal Instruments series before finally starting The Dark Artifices trilogy now the last book is out. Maybe this year instead.

So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know how many books you didn’t manage to get around to in 2018. Have they all been added to your TBR list for 2019, or have you managed to read some of them in the first three weeks of the yea

    1. The Wicked Deep is going to be my Halloween read for 2019, so I’ll definitely get to it but it’s gonna take me a little while. The Forbidden Wish and Kingdom of Ash are high on my list, I need to read all the books on this list this year at least!
      Thanks so much. 🙂 ❤

  1. oh gosh I haven’t read a single one of these, but now I’m adding them all to my tbr so we can talk about them and obsess together, they all sound so nice ❤

Especially The Belles, I’ve been excited about it for so long, mostly bc the characters sounded v cool. But now I’m excited bc I love fantasy books???? And world-building??? WHO AM I??????

I used to never care v much about world-building, or I would get bored when they described the politics/geography/etc. But ever since I read Graceling + am CR Truthwitch, I’m finally starting to cherish these things c: c: c:

++when u gave me the advice to start w magical realism, it really helped !! and now I have this entirely new GENRE of books to read, and i'm so happppyyyyy

    1. Oh well I hope you enjoy all of these Malanie. 🙂 I’ve heard good things about them, which is why they’re on my TBR list, and at least I know I’m not the only one who still hasn’t read all of these now too. 😀
Ha, world building is the best thing about fantasy books, if it’s done right that is. Ohh, I really loved Graceling when I read it (but this was years ago).
Oh that’s great to hear, I really really really love magical realism books so I’m glad I could help introduce you to the genre! 😀

  2. I’ve only read Kingdom of Ash, never started the TMI series or picked up any of the books you mentioned even though I own half of them and planned to get the rest too

  3. Ahhhh what a fantastic list, Beth, you have so many great books to look forward to! I LOVED The Forbidden Wish so much, it is one of my favorite reads EVER. I also really liked The Brightsiders, The Wicked Deep, The Belles and Restore Me, can’t wait to hear your thoughts on them 🙂 and I also want to read For A Muse of Fire this year, it sounds so good 🙂
    Happy reading! ❤

    1. Thanks so much Marie. 🙂 ❤️
Definitely, and I’m going to do my best to get around to the majority of them ASAP! The Forbidden Wish is for sure high on my TBR list because everyone has told me how much they’ve loved it and how much I’ll love it. It really does, and I loved Heilig’s debut series so I have high hopes for this one.
Thanks, happy reading to you too. 🙂 ❤️

  4. Nice post. Thank you.
My problem would be being able to pick just 10 books that I should have, could have, wanted to but didn’t read. When you think about it, its a wonderful problem to have. That problem being that there are lots of good writers producing lots of great books….too many for me to read.

    1. Thanks so much. 🙂 Oh if I’m being honest there are way more than ten books on my TBR list I wanted to get around to last year I could have featured on this post, but yes definitely a great problem to have. If only there was more time in the day we could dedicate to reading more. 🙂

  5. Great post, Beth! I’m honestly SO excited for you to read The Forbidden Wish; I know you’re going to love it. 💜 There are so many books I meant to read in 2018 but didn’t get to, haha – struggles of a never-ending TBR. 😩 One book I really want to get around to this year is The Astonishing Color of After, as well as other books by Asian authors (as I’m planning to join the Year of the Asian reading challenge). ☺️

    1. Thanks so much. 🙂 Yeah that one’s been on my TBR list for ages, I know it’s going to be amazing I just need to actually pick it up! Ha, I know those struggles all too well too, hopefully we’ll get through more this year than we plan to. I’ve heard amazing things about The Astonishing Colour of After so I hope you love it, and oh good luck with the Year of the Asian reading challenge as well. 🙂 ❤️

    1. Yeah I was so excited to see she had another book out, I really loved her The Girl from Everywhere duology. 🙂 They’re both gorgeous, and there’s a lot of blue which I love because it’s my favourite colour! 😀
I hope you manage to make it through both of them, I’ve been hearing good things about An Absolutely Remarkable Thing lately too. 🙂

    1. Oh that’s a shame it wasn’t what you expected it to be then, I get what you mean though because a recent read for me was marketed as fantasy but it ended up focusing more on the romance than anything else. :/
Maybe now I know that I’ll still be able to enjoy it. 🙂

  6. I also had The Belles and Reaper at the Gates on my TBR last year, but ended up not reading neither of them😅.

I adored Restore Me and The Forbidden Wish, they were such incredible reads! I hope you’ll pick them up soon and enjoy them as well😊.

    1. It’s hard getting through some of the books on our TBR lists when there are so many amazing ones to choose from right?! 😀 Hopeful well get to them soon, and yeah I’ve heard amazing things about both Restore Me and The Forbidden Wish so I can’t wait to finally pick them up. 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Meghan. 🙂 I can’t wait, I was desperate to have the third book after reading the ending to the second. Not sure why it’s taken me so long to get around to it, same with The Forbidden Wish.
Thanks, there are a lot of books I still need to get through so I’m gonna need all the luck I can get! 😀

      1. You’re welcome! 🙂 Haha, a bookworm problem… other books got in the way! 😛
Yes, there are! I’m currently reading Queen of Air and Darkness right now and it’s 900 pages… it’s going to take me some time to get through it!
