Reading Around the World is a feature that combines my love of travelling with my love of reading. Each month I plan to spotlight either a city I have visited, or a city I plan to visit in the near future, and recommend some of my favourite books set there. After all even if you can’t visit these cities yourself the next best thing has to be reading about them and living the experience through the eyes of the characters.
Croatia is a country I’d heard so many amazing things about, so when I had the opportunity to go I jumped at the chance. Everyone told me it was a beautiful country but words and photos don’t do it justice because I didn’t realise how breathtaking Croatia is until I was there myself. I spent one night in Zadar, before travelling through Krka National Park to Dubrovnik. Both Zadar and Dubrovnik are cities full of history, walking through the streets you could almost imagine you’d stepped back in time, and Krka National Park had some of the most beautiful views I’ve ever seen.
I’m cheating a little when it comes to book recommendations for Croatia, but while George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire isn’t set in Croatia parts of the TV series are filmed there. Walking the streets of Dubrovnik it almost feels like you could be walking the streets of King’s Landing instead. Yes the series itself isn’t set there, but I can’t imagine any books better for reading in Croatia than this one.
Have you ever been to Croatia before; what was your favourite part of the city to see and explore? Also what are some of the amazing books you’ve read set in Croatia, that you’d recommend? Let me know in the comments.
Always wanted to go it looks beautiful, I think your pictures will do it justice.

Great idea. I went to Croatia twice in the last ten years or so, loved it and plan to go back.

It was a great trip, and an unexpected one as my sister had originally planned to go with someone else but those plans fell through. It really felt like King’s Landing, the second I walked into the Old Town. It was incredible.
Thanks so much. 🙂 ❤

I love this series of yours, Beth ❤️
Croatia looks amazing and your photos are really beautiful, I’m happy you had a great time while visiting.
I have actually never read OR watched Game of Thrones and I just have an inkling that it might be too late now. Also the books are so large and intimidating 😐
Can’t wait to see which country is next on your list ❤️

Thanks so much Michelle. 🙂 ❤
Oh Croatia was an incredible holiday, I'm so glad I got the chance to go and honestly it's even more beautiful than my photos make it look. 😀
I would say it's never too late but yeah the books are long! I haven't read the fifth one yet and I keep putting it off because it's just too big.

Beautiful photos! Croatia is still on my ‘need to visit’ list. After reading this post, I think I’ll move it up a few notches on said list!

The photos turned out beautiful, Beth! Croatia really seems like a lovely place. I had never searched much about the country before, and I’m surprised by the natural beauties, like the waterfalls. It really seems like a perfect scenario for summer. 💛

Thanks so much, and yeah it really is. Honestly I don’t think my photos fully do it justice. Yeah I’d never really searched much about the county either, but then my friend travelled there, took some incredible photos and it went to the top of my must-travel-to list. 😀 ❤

Wow, all of those pictures are so beautiful! 😱 I’d never even thought to want to visit Croatia until now! And I had no idea GoT was filmed there. I don’t even watch the show but I’m sure it added an even more magical sense to the places you visited!

Thanks so much. Croatia wasn’t really on my must-travel-to list until one of my friends went there and I saw the pictures she took. It was so much fun seeing the Game of Thrones locations, it’s a very iconic city. The second you step into the Old Town you can practically see the TV show.

I’ve never been to Croatia but damn, it looks beautiful! 😀 I’d love to do a country hop of all the countries GOT has filmed in… they film in so many locations! I’m going to miss the show once it’s over!

It really is, and if you’re interested I’d definitely recommend making a trip there yourself. It’s such a beautiful country.
They really do, as far as I’m aware it’s Croatia, Iceland and Ireland right? I’m sure there are probably countries they’ve filmed in that I’ve missed but those are the main ones. I’d love to do a country hop like that too, it’d be epic! 😀

As I say with all your posts… I’ll add it to my ‘one day’ list!
I think those are the main 3… there could be more… you know you’d think I’d know this since I watch all of the bonus content on all the DVDs 🙄😝
It would be very epic! I’m sure they have something on a smaller scale!

Ahh, if your ‘one day’ list is as long as mine that’s a long list! 😀
You’d think, but I’ve watched the series enough I should know too. At least we’ve got the main ones though. 🙂

Ohhh, it’s long haha! 🙂
Haha, that’s what happens when a show is that big it takes up multiple countries!

It really is, honestly my pictures don’t do it justice. It’s well worth visiting and yeah I know because I did have to cheat a little with this post! 😀 The only series I’m aware of is one where the adaptation has been filmed in the country.

I will let you know if I come across any books set there! Also, if your stunning photos don’t do it justice I really MUST visit some day!

Thanks, I’d really love that. It’s the second best thing to travelling back there, reading books that help me relive my holiday memories. 🙂

Gorgeous photos Beth. Croatia has been on our wish list for several years. Eventually we’ll get there. Our favourite place of all the places we’ve visited around the world so far is Cesky Krumlov in Czech Republic.

Thanks so much. 🙂 Oh Croatia was on my to-travel-to list and honestly it’ll be worthwhile when you finally make it there yourself I’m sure. I’ve only been to Prague in the Czech Republic, but it’s one of my favourite places, I’d love to visit more cities in that country.
