The Twenty Questions Book Tag

You may have noticed I disappeared for the last two weeks. Where was I? Good question. I’m not sure what happened but I just suffered from a major slump and everything – blogging, reading, life in general – felt like a struggle. Still I’m back now, and slowly catching up on the posts I’ve missed over the past couple of weeks.

And what better way is there to get back into blogging than posting a book tag? Because let’s face it who doesn’t have an opinion on whether hardcovers or paperbacks are better, or on love triangles in general? I do, and I’m certain some people already know the answers to these questions I’m that outspoken about them. I was tagged by May at Forever and Everly. Thanks for the tag May, I had a lot of fun answering the questions for this one so I hope you enjoy reading my answers just as much.

The Twenty Questions Book Tag

How many books are too many books in a book series?

I think three or four books is a good number for a series depending on the story, any more than that is too many.

However there are some exceptions to that rule; I’m absolutely loving the Red Rising Saga which is now going to be six books, and the same goes the Throne of Glass series which between the full-length stories, novellas and spin-offs seems to have more books than I can count.

Red Rising

Throne of Glass

How do you feel about cliffhangers?

That depends on if I have the next book in my hands ready to get started on. The wait between A Gathering of Shadows and A Conjuring of Light was unbearable; I had to sit for a year with that cliffhanger and it nearly drove me insane.

There’s a reason I decided not to start The Dark Artifices trilogy until all three books have been released (I say like I’ve actually started Lady Midnight, instead of it still being on my TBR list now).

The Dark Artifices series

Hardback or paperback?

For aesthetic purposes I’m going to say hardcovers, because they look great on my bookshelves and under the dust jackets they can be even more gorgeous, but for portability purposes I’m going to say paperback, because it’s less weight carrying a paperback in my bag compared to a hardcover.

Favourite book?

My favourite standalone is The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern; it’s such a magical story and I love the setting. I’d give anything to be able to visit Le Cirque des Rêves myself.

The Night Circus

My favourite series is Shades of Magic by V.E. Schwab; it’s full of action and adventure with great characters and brilliant world building. I can’t wait to go back with the Threads of Power series.

Least favourite book?

The Truth and Lies of Ella Black by Emily Barr

I hated the main character, and in a book told in first person POV that’s the kiss of death for me; Ella’s decisions just made me so angry, and they didn’t make sense. Plus The Truth and Lies of Ella Black had the worst case of insta-love I think I’ve ever read. The second Ella’s eyes met Christian’s she was seeing their whole life together play out, she didn’t even know his name but was convinced they were destined to be together.

Love triangles, yes or no?

More often than not I think love triangles are just thrown in to add tension between the characters, and all they really end up doing is taking something away from the development of the story or the individual characters. That said if they’re done well then I don’t mind them, but so far the only series I’ve read with a well-written love triangle is The Infernal Devices trilogy.

The Infernal Devices

The most recent book you just couldn’t finish?

The Lantern’s Ember by Colleen Houck

When I picked up this book for the first time in October/November last year I had started falling into a reading slump, and as a mood reader that was it for The Lantern’s Ember. I didn’t get past the third chapter before I had to give up and add it back to my TBR list because I wasn’t taking anything I was reading in.

the lantern's ember

A book you’re currently reading?

Funnily enough my answer for the previous question is my answer for this one as well. I always knew I’d be picking The Lantern’s Ember up again once I was in the mood to read it, and now I am. Granted I’m only about a third of the way through, but it’s further than I made it the last time I picked this book up and I’m always enjoying it a lot more this time around.

Last book you recommended to someone?

I’m not 100% sure – thanks to blogging I recommend a lot of books – but the last book I remember recommending in person was Iron Gold. I was trying to convince my friend, the same friend who told me I needed to read Red Rising in the first place, to get back into the series and finally finally get around to both Morning Star and Iron Gold.

Iron Gold

Oldest book you’ve read? (Publication date)

The Golden Compass/Northern Lights by Philip Pullman

It was released in 1995 when I was only five years old, so obviously I didn’t read it the year it was released. I didn’t actually pick this series up until I was around 13 or 14, nearly ten years after the release date of Northern Lights, thanks to a recommendation from my best friend.

The Golden Compass - Northern Lights

Newest book you’ve read? (Publication date)

Enchantée by Gita Trelease

Enchantée isn’t being released in the UK until February 7th, so there’s still month to go until it’s official publication date but I managed to get an eARC from NetGalley. Overall I did enjoy it, but it was slow going and I’m not sure whether that’s down to the fact that I was in the middle of my reading slump when I read it or just the story itself.

enchantée

Favourite author?

Because I have so so many I’m just going to list a handful of my top favourites;

The Twenty Questions Book Tag (2)

Buying books or borrowing books?

Buying; simply because if it’s a book I love I need to have my own copy so I can go back and re-read it over and over again. Plus I like building up my own personal library.

A book you dislike that everyone else seems to love?

To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo

I wouldn’t say I disliked this book, just that it wasn’t one I loved and I seem to be an exception there. Every other review I’ve seen has been glowing, and every other blogger who’s read To Kill a Kingdom seems to have loved it, so what am I missing?!

To Kill a Kingdom

Bookmarks or dog-ears?

Bookmarks for sure. I’m very precious about my books and don’t want anything to damage them, dog-earring pages hurts my soul.

A book you can always re-read?

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

It’s such a fun story; there’s magic and tension, high stakes and humour, a cute and shippable romance all at the same time. I love Simon, Baz and Penny, and whenever I’m feeling down or just generally slump-y I’ll automatically reach for Carry On.

Carry On

Can you read while hearing music?

I actually need music to read, because if not I get distracted by outside noises around me. I do most of my reading on the train during my commute to and from work, so there are a lot of outside noises that could potentially distract me from whichever book I’m trying to read.

One POV or multiple POVs?

When I think of some of my favourite books – Shades of Magic and The Night Circus which I’ve mentioned before, as well as Strange the Dreamer, Six of Crows and The Lunar Chronicles – they’re all multiple POV books.

The Twenty Questions Book Tag (3)

Do you read a book in one sitting or over multiple days?

It don’t really read books in one sitting so I’ll say multiple days. At the same time though there are books I can get through in one day.

Honestly I think it depends on the book and how addictive the story is.

Who do you tag?

Tell me who your favourite author is, do any of the authors who made my list make your list? Are you a fan of love triangles? Do you prefer hardcovers or paperbacks, and what book can you always re-read? Let me know, and if there’s anyone out there who wants to take part consider yourself tagged.

  1. Wow. I can’t imagine how hard it must have been to wait for A Conjuring of Light. That cliffhanger at the end of A Gathering of Shadows was horrible! I’m so happy that I already owned the third book, as I needed to know what was going to happen next.
I haven’t read To Kill a Kingdom yet, but I do own it and really want to read it. Too bad that you didn’t enjoy it as much as everyone else seems to. I have heard mostly positive things about the book and we shall see what I’ll think of it once I read it. 🙂
Thank you for tagging me! ❤

    1. It was insane. Most times with cliffhangers I can forget after a little while (distracted by other books until the next one is out) but I always had the ending to A Gathering of Shadows playing on my mind. I’m planning to re-read the series sometime now all three are out actually.
I feel like with To Kill a Kingdom I was just the odd one out, every review I’ve seen for it has been glowing so I’m sure you’ll love it too. 🙂
      That’s all right. 🙂 ❤️

  2. I also prefer 3 books for a series- though more can totally work! Totally get what you mean about cliffhangers (though I secretly enjoy that unbearable wait 😉 ) hardcovers are better for the aesthetic 😉 I do get what you mean about well done love triangles- like infernal devices- working. So agree about carry on- that book is definitely one I can read and read again!! (in fact I basically reread it straight after finishing it 😉 ) Awesome answers! 🙂

    1. More can definitely work, like Throne of Glass which I love which is more books than I can count if you count the novellas and everything. Ohh, I can’t even say I secretly enjoy the wait. The Infernal Devices is the only love triangle I’ve read that does work, and yeah Carry On is one of my all-time favourite books. I love the story, Simon and Baz so much.
      Tanks so much. 😀 ❤

  3. This looks like such a great tag, Beth ❤️

I totally understand the whole slump feeling. I only recently returned from a very long hiatus but sometimes it’s necessary to take breaks.

I’m so happy to see that The Night Circus is one of your all time favourite books, it is simply just a magical book and I love it too. Can you believe she is writing another novel, I’m so excited!! I really want to try and read some of Schwab’s books this year, I’ve been saying that since last year but I know that this year is THE year. Also excited to read some of Leigh Bardugo’s books and I really want to read Strange The Dreamer as well.

I prefer paperbacks over hardbacks (they’re easier to find and much less expensive over here) but I do admit that hardbacks looks so pretty! And I can always, always reread Harry Potter xx

    1. Thanks so much Michelle. 🙂 ❤
Exactly, I feel like if I'd have kept trying to blog feeling like I did I would have completely burnt out, as it is now I'm refreshed and ready to go again. Hopefully you're the same after your hiatus.
Definitely, and yes I am so excited. I already have it pre-ordered and I am literally counting down the days! It sounds amazing as well right?! Hopefully you get around to Schwab's books this year, and Leigh Bardugo and Strange the Dreamer (all are amazing so I'm sure you'll love them).
Hardbacks for the books shelves, paperbacks for the ease right? That should be my motto I think! 😀

  4. Thank you so much for the tag!💕I loved reading your post, and I hope you are having a wonderful 2019 so far.
I feel the same way about cliffhangers! If I can get the next book right away, then I’m perfectly good with them, but I have to wait…then I prefer no cliffhangers. XD

    1. That’s all right, and thanks so much Olivia. 🙂 ❤ Yep, 2019 is good so far so I have high hopes for the rest of the year. I hope it's going well for you so far too.
I always say I'm going to wait for the whole series to be released, so I don't have to cope with insane cliffhangers, but then I never stick to it and it's agony waiting for the next book. 😀

  5. Happy New Year Beth! 😀 ❤️I enjoyed reading your answers! I hope you enjoy the Dark Artifices trilogy now that you’ll be starting it! Queen of Air and Darkness looks so big that it seems daunting to start, but I’m hoping to get to it either this month or next.

I also agree with you on listening to music while you read… especially on public transport! 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Meghan. 🙂 Oh that whole series is a little daunting, and I still need to get through the Shadowhunter books still on my TBR list but I’m really excited to get around to TDA books, especially now they have all been released. I hope you end up enjoying it too.
Yeah, if there’s one place you need music it’s on public transport. 😀

      1. You’re welcome! 😀 I can agree with you, it does seem daunting, but it also goes by so quick! It’ll be fun to binge read I bet! 🙂
Thanks, I’m looking forward to jumping back into the world! 🙂

        Ohhh, yes!

  6. Thanks for tagging me! I’m planning on doing it later this month. 🙂 It was fun to read your answers! I completely agree on love triangles. I tend to really dislike them.

  7. I just finished reading A Darker Shade of Magic, and I was wondering whether I should jump immediately into the second and third books… the fact that you love that series makes that choice for me, though! 😋 I enjoyed the worldbuilding in the first book, and I’m curious to see where the series goes. I felt like the character relationships and romance in A Darker Shade of Magic were a little shallow, though? Does it get better and more fleshed-out in the second and third books?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I’d say immediately jump into the other books. No doubt about it! Plus I feel like once you’ve finished A Gathering of Shadows you’ll have to pick up A Conjuring of Light because the cliffhanger is that intense! 😀 The world-building is amazing, I’ve not come across another author who does world-building as well as Schwab does, and yeah i think the relationships do improve in the next two books. There’s more development and we get more scenes with Kell and Rhy which I loved reading. They’re my favourite sibling relationship. 😀

  8. TID is the only exception to my dislike for love triangles too. I think it was so well done and all three characters love and respect each other equally which is rare in a lot of cases. I don’t think you’re missing anything with To Kill A Kingdom. I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews for it and it’s not one that personally jumps out at me either, but then again I’m not the greatest fan of siren/mermaid books, especially if they’re retellings of The Little Mermaid. On a more positive note, some of your favourite authors are my favourites too – VE Schwab, Samantha Shannon and Laini Taylor. I love their books and I cannot wait to dive into some of their unread books on my shelves like Muse of Nightmares, Priory (when it’s released), and The Dark Vault (aka The Archived and The Unbound).

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Exactly, the fact that Will and Jem love each other as much as they both love Tessa means there’s much more weight to the whole situation and it just adds extra tension which doesn’t feel just chucked into the plot. Well I do love fairytale retellings but there are always some that are miss rather than hit. To Kill a Kingdom just ended up being one of them.
Oh I feel like in the YA community there are those authors everyone loves. Muse of Nightmares is incredible, and while The Dark Vault isn’t my favourite of Schwab’s books it’s still a great story. Priory is going to be amazing right? It’s one of my most anticipated releases for this year. 🙂

  9. Lots of bookish answers to read. I think we actually have quite a few of the same favourite authors. Leigh Bardugo, Sarah J Maas and Marissa Meyer. I need to read some from some of the others mentioned– but they are all on my TBR.
I can’t decide if I prefer paperback or hardback– I used to always say paperback but I keep looking at hardback and think they are so pretty. 😂 I am having a crisis haha.
I need to read carry on this year– I wanted to last year but I was on a book buying ban. 😂
    Great post!!! 💛

    1. Ha, yeah there were plenty of questions for this tag and I tried to vary my answers too. All the authors I included for that question are automatic adds to my to-read list.
It’s impossible to choose I think, they both have their benefits so I alternate depending on what I need them for. hardcovers for my bookshelves and paperbacks for my commutes.
Oh Carry On is incredible, I’m sure you’ll love it, and thanks so much. 🙂 ❤

Yes that’s true– a very good point.

  10. It’s good to see you posting again, Beth and I am so sorry you were in a slump, hope you’re feeling better and more motivated now! ❤ I also wish you a wonderful 2019, filled with love, happiness and amazing books 🙂
I felt the same way about Enchantée, the story felt a bit slow to me just as well so you're not alone there, at all 🙂
And I really need to read a McLemore book this year, I can't wait, they all sound incredible 🙂
    Lovely post! 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Marie. 🙂 ❤ Yeah slumping sucks, and the worst thing is I knew I was slumping but I just couldn't get out of it. Thanks, and fingers crossed that is exactly what 2019 is filled with for the both of us.
Enchantée has promise, I think I just wanted something more fast-paced. Nice to know I'm not alone in feeling that way though.
Yes definitely, I'd recommend starting with When the Moon Was Ours, that's my favourite.
      Thanks again. 🙂 ❤

    1. Thanks so much Tasya. 🙂 Yeah for me it’s just take Will and Jem love each other as much as they both love Tessa. It makes the whole thing work where it doesn’t in other books.
Oh definitely, it’s an amazing series so best to continue before you forget the first book completely. 🙂 ❤

  11. Welcome back, Beth!! I’m so happy you’re back, and I hope you’re out of your slump. 💓 I really enjoyed reading your responses! I’m so glad to see that Marie Lu is one of your favorite authors – I finished The Young Elites a few days ago and am now reading The Rose Society. This series is so good! 😍 I’m also very excited to read Legend.

Thanks so much, and I hope 2019 will be a great year for you too. 🙂 ❤

      1. Oh yeah, slumps are the worst. 😩 And yes, I have read Warcross and absolutely loved it!! I really liked Emika as a character and omg, all those plot twists got me shook, haha. I haven’t read Wildcard yet, but hopefully I can read it soon! (I’ve heard mixed reviews about Wildcard which has caused me to push it to the back of my TBR, whoops.)

  12. I think I may have already done this? The questions looked very familiar, but I so enjoyed reading your answers, because they included so many familiar books! I mean … Night Circus, Iron Gold, Carry On, To Kill a Kingdom … I could go on and on. Those are all such amazing picks!

    1. Oh I can’t even say I enjoyed Flora Banks (thinking about it I’m not sure why I went onto Ella Black when I didn’t enjoy the first release by Emily Barr). The only thing I enjoyed in both books was the setting, that part I thought was really well written. 🙂
