Reading Around the World: Romania

Reading Around the World is a feature that combines my love of travelling with my love of reading. Each month I plan to spotlight either a city I have visited, or a city I plan to visit in the near future, and recommend some of my favourite books set there. After all even if you can’t visit these cities yourself the next best thing has to be reading about them and living the experience through the eyes of the characters.

Romania (1)

Romania isn’t a place I would say I was desperate to visit, but I did have a brilliant time on my tour. My friend and I travelled from Bucharest to Brasov to Bâlea Lake, from Peles Castle to Bran Castle, we took in what Romania had to offer and there was a lot. Bucharest felt like a very typical capital city, but Brasov was like something out of a fairytale with its quaint houses, towering mountains and winding roads. Bâlea Lake was breathtaking, and Peles Castle was one of the most gorgeous buildings I’d ever seen.

The Conqueror’s Saga by Kiersten White is a retelling of Vlad the Impaler’s story but told with a female Vlad. While the first book largely takes place in the Ottoman Empire as Lada and Radu become the sultans war hostages Romania, or Wallachia, is still a large part of the story and a huge part of Lada’s life as well. Wallachia is her home and no matter how far away she is it calls to her.

And of course, of course, I couldn’t talk about Romania without mentioning Dracula by Bram Stoker. I haven’t read this book myself (I’m not a massive fan of the classics genre which I think most people know about my by now) but if I’m ever tempted to pick up a classic book it would be this one.

Dracula

Have you ever been to Romania before; what was your favourite part of the city to see and explore? Also what are some of the amazing books you’ve read set in Romania, that you’d recommend? Let me know in the comments.

  1. I’m happy you enjoyed your trip to Romania. Brasov is beautiful! Did you get to visit Cluj-Napoca an Sibiu? They’re by far my favorite Romanian cities. The medieval town of Sighisoara is also a very interesting place to visit. And they are all pretty close to each other.

    1. Thanks so much, and yes Brasov felt kind of like a fairytale village to me, especially with all the snow.
No I didn’t make it to either of those cities. We just went to Bucharest, Brasov, and Lake Balea. I’ll definitely keep Cluj-Napoca an Sibiu and Sighisoara in mind for next time I’m in Romania though. 🙂

  3. Oh my God, it’s really great to hear people being so impressed with Romania.
I live in Romania and I’m so happy you liked it there. This country has so much to offer but people don’t usually choose to come here. And you made some great photos.
I need to read And I Darken asap. I’m so happy you had a good time in Romania!

    1. Oh it was a beautiful country, and I was lucky enough to be able to see so much of it too. Thanks so much, honestly the places I saw really were beautiful I don;t think my photos do them justice, especially being on top of the mountain with the snow (although it was really really cold)!
And I Darken is a great read, I’d definitely recommend it and I hope you’ll enjoy it too.
      Thanks so much. 🙂 ❤

  4. I’ve never been to Romania. It’s not on my top list, but at the same time I found nations and cities from that part of Europe, uniquely fascinating.

We totally need more books, maybe written by more ownvoices authors! I know little of their folklore, and it’s so interesting

    1. Romania was never really high on my list either but I’m glad I went. It ended up being such an incredible experience.
Definitely, some of the places I’ve visited I can’t fond any books written set there and it’s a shame because there’s so much to discover and inspire as well. 🙂 ❤️

  5. Aaaah that one picture of the snow-covered mountain with the cabin… that looks absolutely *gorgeous*, and like a perfect, picturesque winter destination. Where I live, it never snows, so I guess I’ll have to settle for these gorgeous, snowy pictures of Romania this Christmas 😋 I’m glad you enjoyed your trip to Romania!

    1. Yeah we were lucky we managed to get a little bit of clear weather when we were up on the mountain to get some photos. It was like nothing I’ve ever experienced up there for sure. It never snows where I am either, and after spending time in Romania in the winter I can say for sure I’d never want to live where it snows a lot. I can’t handle the cold.
      Thanks so much. 🙂

  6. I’ve been living in Romania for 2 years. Completely fell in love with the people, the language, the landscapes and..everything else! Peles Castle is my favorite! I simply love it. If you’d ever go back there I suggest you Sighisoara too and Cluj or Sibiu…amazing!

    1. Peles Castle is gorgeous, and actually everything I saw about Romania was gorgeous. I can see why you fell in love with it and everything about the country too. 🙂 Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll have to look into those places if I ever make it back to Romania one day. 🙂

  7. This is very cool! I personally love Dracula and it’s one of those books that is so exciting it doesn’t really feel like a classic, or not in the sense I usually associate with them! Think you might like it if you’re interested in the region.

  8. I have never been to Romania, but I have wanted to visit it for years. Mostly because I read Dracula and wanted to see the castle! 😀 Your pictures are gorgeous and they definitely make me want to visit Romania even more. I haven’t read The Conqueror’s Saga yet, but I really want to. I have heard amazing things about Kiersten White’s books and that trilogy sounds fascinating. 🙂
    Amazing post Beth! ❤

    1. Romania was amazing, it was never really one of the places I was desperate to go to (possibly because I never read Dracula) but I was blown away and it was an incredible holiday. The Conqueror’s Saga is a brilliant series, a favourite of mine, so I’d definitely recommend it, and I hope you make it to Romania one day as well Anna.
      Thanks so much. 🙂 ❤

  9. Hey Beth 🙂
I haven’t been to Romania but I loved seeing your pictures! I enjoy exploring cities and countries through the eyes of the characters in the books I read, and of course being able to visit these places is a bonus! Thank you for sharing ❤

    1. Oh I’m glad you enjoyed this post and my pictures Sophie. 🙂 ❤ Romania is a beautiful country and while I haven't read Dracula, The Conqueror's Saga is a great series to read because Lada has such an intense love for Wallachia (Romania). Part of what I love about reading books set in places I've been is practically being able to re-visit them.
      That's all right. ❤

    1. Thanks so much, and Romania is probably one of the most beautiful places I’ve visited. It’s so unlike all the other places I’ve been so far too.
When it comes to books set in Romania there are some that just pop into our minds automatically aren’t there? The Conquerors Saga is one of those for me.
      Thanks so much. 🙂 ❤️

  11. Beautiful photos Beth! I love how you went in the wintery months, it makes everything look so magical! 😀 I’ve read Dracula, it definitely wasn’t my favourite novel, but I’m glad I read it. It’s very dry and hard to get into, but I still thought it was cool to read where all the retellings have come from! 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Meghan. 🙂 Yeah I feel like if you’re going to to go to Romania the winter months are the best because it’s so beautiful.
Normally I’m not a fan of classics but I feel like if I was ever going to pick one up it’d probably be Dracula, or something like that. Yeah I’ve read a fair few retellings so one day I’ll have to read the original. 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Lashaan. 🙂 Yeah my trips will be slowing down soon so I’ll have to look through my old pictures and remember instead. Romania was amazing, and doing the tour seeing what we did was unforgettable.
That’s all right. I’m glad you enjoyed this post. 🙂 ❤️
