Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books I’m Thankful I was able to Discover through Blogging

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is a thanksgiving freebie, so I picked Top Ten Books I’m Thankful I was able to Discover through Blogging.

(I will admit a lot of my time thinking about this post was working out how to write the title so it was concise while still getting across my choice of topic for this week).

I’ve always loved reading, but ever since I started blogging there have been so many incredible books added to my TBR list because of all the glowing, five-star reviews I see. Maybe if I hadn’t started blogging some of these are books I still would have picked up eventually, but there are a few I know I never would have read if it hadn’t been for this blog, and the community.

Top Ten Tuesday #127

When the Moon Was Ours by Anna-Marie McLemore

The first magical realism book I discovered through blogging was Bone Gap, but after seeing some people mention how excited they were for the release of When the Moon Was Ours I tentatively added it to my TBR list. On a whim I requested it when I saw it on NetGalley and of course I loved it, and Anna-Marie McLemore is now one of my favourite magical realism authors.

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

Contemporary as a whole is a genre I discovered through blogging, but Simon vs. is one of my favourite books. After its release it seemed to be everywhere; everyone was reading it, loving it and writing five-star reviews for it and after a while I just needed to know what all the fuss was about.

Darius the Great is Not Okay by Adib Khorram

I don’t think this book has the hype it deserves. Darius the Great is Not Okay is an incredible diverse read, and one of my favourite books of this year so far. I’ve only seen a handful of reviews floating around the blogosphere (actually it was those same handful of reviews that convinced me to pick it up too) so if I hadn’t started blogging this would have likely been a book I never would’ve read.

More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera

Granted all his books have broken my heart, and my initial idea of binge reading More Happy Than Not and History is All You Left Me back-to-back when I first decided to give his writing a go was not my smartest idea, but Adam Silvera is now another of my favourite YA contemporary authors.

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

I never used to be a massive sci-fi reader, but I started blogging around the same time Illuminae was released and all of a sudden I was seeing so much hype for this book that I knew I needed to pick it up myself. I’m glad I did, because as well as introducing me to possibly my favourite sci-fi series it introduced me to Jay Kristoff’s writing, which led me to the Nevernight trilogy and LifeL1K3 (two more favourites of mine).

Gilded Cage by Vic James

This book has ended up on my list for a round-about reason this week. When I was at YALC two and a bit years ago now there were ARCs being handed out for this book, and it sounded interesting so I got my hands on a copy thinking ‘why not?’. I was hooked, and the Dark Gifts trilogy is a favourite dystopian series of mine, and the reason it ended up on my list this week despite the fact I discovered it thanks to YALC is that the only reason I knew YALC even existed was thanks to blogging.

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

I saw the movie adaptation for The Lightning Thief before reading the book, and until I started blogging I had no interest in reading the books. However hearing bloggers talk about how they loved the series growing up the same way I loved Harry Potter growing up convinced me to finally pick the first book up, and I haven’t looked back since.

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

I did have Fangirl on my TBR list before I started blogging, but it was one of those books I knew would probably sit there forever. Like with Illuminae I started blogging around the same time Carry On was released and there was so much hype for it floating around I knew I needed to read it too.

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

Before blogging the only book by Maggie Stiefvater I’d read was Shiver, and I wasn’t a fan. I had no desire to pick up any more of her books because I just didn’t think her writing was for me, but seeing all the love for The Raven Cycle series on the blogosphere convinced me to give her books another chance.

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon

I saw only one review for this book before deciding to add it to my TBR list, but that one was all I needed. I brought the first and second books and sped through them, completely addicted. I actually finished reading The Bone Season during my lunch break at work, and despite having the paperback edition of The Mime Order waiting for me at home I brought another copy for my Kindle just so I could start reading it right away.

So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what you picked for this week’s themed free-for-all. What’s the best book blogging led you to discover, and are there any you’ve read and loved that you know you wouldn’t have gotten around to if it hadn’t been for the blogging community?

  1. Really great topic! So glad when the moon was ours- I also discovered it through blogging and really want to read it 🙂 I discovered simon vs the homosapien agenda through blogging too and I really loved it! and I also never read sci fi before blogging- so I’m super grateful for bloggers who recommended books like illuminae for inspiring me to read more of it! Yeah hearing people talk about how they loved lightning thief growing up definitely got me into percy jackson too 😀 I was the same for carry on and was so glad I read it!

    1. Thanks so much. Yeah one of the best things I’ve discovered thanks to blogging has been the magical realism genre, and when it comes to magical realism there’s no better author than Anne-Marie McLemore. 🙂
Simon Vs is one of my ultimate feel-good reads, and yes Illuminae is worth getting into the sci-fi genre in my opinion! 😀 I would have loved to have read Percy Jackson when I was growing up but I’ll settle for having read it now at least. 🙂 ❤️

  2. I have to say before blogging I barely read at all! But as I started getting into both, it felt almost natural to follow everyone’s advice and suggestions so I ended up discovering a lot of wonderful books – though there are still too many I have yet to pick up, giving the sheer magnitude of my TBR xD

I do think that we all read mostly the same books nowadays (especially the YA crowd) which doesn’t bother me personally, but it can be nice to explore new horizons every once in a while. I feel like trying different genres at times and that’s where the community can fail a bit. But otherwise, can’t complain as I’ve had more success with my recs than disappointments! 🙂

    Amazing post, Beth ❤

    1. I mean thinking back there’s not much before blogging I can remember that clearly! But I do remember that I’ve started reading so much more now I’m blogging. Yeah blogging has been hell on my TBR list but we’ll get through them all one day I’m sure! 😀
Oh that’s a good point, and actually I hadn’t thought about it that way but I do get what you mean. We all get excited about the same books so we’re all recommending and reading the same thing. I dunno for me as long as I enjoy what I’m reading I’m happy.
Thanks so much Sophie. 🙂 ❤️

      1. Hahaha of course we will! 😛
Yeah, I mean, it’s all right as long as people don’t shun/ignore others because they don’t read/review certain books. That’s the only bad thing about it! Otherwise, I actually enjoy the fact that so many people read the same books as it’s easier to share experiences that way 🙂
        No worries, hon! ❤

      2. Oh yeah, I always hate it when people book shame other people. Personally I read what I know I’ll enjoy and when it comes down to it everyone’s going to be the same so what’s the point in making them feel bad about it. 🙂

  3. I found all of these books only through blogging, as they are all out of my comfort genre. I never even read much of YA before this year. But I am glad I did.

    1. Thanks so much Marie! 🙂 ❤️ Yeah my TBR has doubled since I started blogging but so has my favourites list so I guess it all balances out in the end, and I know there are plenty more favourites I still have to discover through blogging as well. 🙂
It’s brilliant, and so is Darius the Great is Not Okay. Honestly I can’t recommend that book enough Marie and I’m sure you’ll really love it too. 🙂

  6. Ahhh I love this post, Beth!! I’m so glad you picked up the Percy Jackson series because of the book blogging community; it truly is the best series. 💙 I definitely need to read Darius the Great Is Not Okay soon; I’ve heard so many great things about it.

I’ve discovered *so many* incredible books through blogging too, including The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Alice Oseman’s books (Radio Silence & IWBFT). Honestly most of the books I read nowadays are because of this community, haha. 💓

    1. Thanks so much Dezzy. 🙂 Yes I was addicted to Rick Riordan’s books once I started reading then. I still have to pick up his Magnus Chase and Trials of Apollo series but I know they’ll be five star reads of mine when I do. Darius the Great is Not Okay is incredible, of highly recommend picking that one up ASAP! 😀
Oh I’ve heard some amazing things about Alice Oseman and her books, I have them on my TBR list so I’ll have to make them a priority of mine for the new year or something. Yeah the book blogging community is a dangerous place for our TBR lists right?! 🙂 ❤️

And yesss, I have YOU to thank for introducing me to When the Moon Was Ours and Anna-Marie McLemore! I am eternally grateful that we had that conversation, because she’s now one of my favorite authors ever as well 💗 I’m also so happy that you were able to pick up PJO because of this community! 1. It’s amazing, and yes I feel like if it hadn’t been so hyped up by the blogging community I would have missed picking it up which would have been a massive shame.
Oh that’s all right, she’s an incredible author, definitely my favourite magical realism author, so I’m glad I could introduce her books to you. 🙂 Percy Jackson is another of my favourite series, I still have some of Rick Riordan’s books to get through (the Magnus Chase and Trials of Apollo series) but I know they’ll likely be five star reads of mine too.
      Thanks May. 🙂 ❤️
