Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books I’m Thankful I was able to Discover through Blogging

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is a thanksgiving freebie, so I picked Top Ten Books I’m Thankful I was able to Discover through Blogging.

(I will admit a lot of my time thinking about this post was working out how to write the title so it was concise while still getting across my choice of topic for this week).

I’ve always loved reading, but ever since I started blogging there have been so many incredible books added to my TBR list because of all the glowing, five-star reviews I see. Maybe if I hadn’t started blogging some of these are books I still would have picked up eventually, but there are a few I know I never would have read if it hadn’t been for this blog, and the community.

When the Moon Was Ours by Anna-Marie McLemore

The first magical realism book I discovered through blogging was Bone Gap, but after seeing some people mention how excited they were for the release of When the Moon Was Ours I tentatively added it to my TBR list. On a whim I requested it when I saw it on NetGalley and of course I loved it, and Anna-Marie McLemore is now one of my favourite magical realism authors.

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

Contemporary as a whole is a genre I discovered through blogging, but Simon vs. is one of my favourite books. After its release it seemed to be everywhere; everyone was reading it, loving it and writing five-star reviews for it and after a while I just needed to know what all the fuss was about.

Darius the Great is Not Okay by Adib Khorram

I don’t think this book has the hype it deserves. Darius the Great is Not Okay is an incredible diverse read, and one of my favourite books of this year so far. I’ve only seen a handful of reviews floating around the blogosphere (actually it was those same handful of reviews that convinced me to pick it up too) so if I hadn’t started blogging this would have likely been a book I never would’ve read.

More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera

Granted all his books have broken my heart, and my initial idea of binge reading More Happy Than Not and History is All You Left Me back-to-back when I first decided to give his writing a go was not my smartest idea, but Adam Silvera is now another of my favourite YA contemporary authors.

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

I never used to be a massive sci-fi reader, but I started blogging around the same time Illuminae was released and all of a sudden I was seeing so much hype for this book that I knew I needed to pick it up myself. I’m glad I did, because as well as introducing me to possibly my favourite sci-fi series it introduced me to Jay Kristoff’s writing, which led me to the Nevernight trilogy and LifeL1K3 (two more favourites of mine).

Gilded Cage by Vic James

This book has ended up on my list for a round-about reason this week. When I was at YALC two and a bit years ago now there were ARCs being handed out for this book, and it sounded interesting so I got my hands on a copy thinking ‘why not?’. I was hooked, and the Dark Gifts trilogy is a favourite dystopian series of mine, and the reason it ended up on my list this week despite the fact I discovered it thanks to YALC is that the only reason I knew YALC even existed was thanks to blogging.

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

I saw the movie adaptation for The Lightning Thief before reading the book, and until I started blogging I had no interest in reading the books. However hearing bloggers talk about how they loved the series growing up the same way I loved Harry Potter growing up convinced me to finally pick the first book up, and I haven’t looked back since.

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

I did have Fangirl on my TBR list before I started blogging, but it was one of those books I knew would probably sit there forever. Like with Illuminae I started blogging around the same time Carry On was released and there was so much hype for it floating around I knew I needed to read it too.

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

Before blogging the only book by Maggie Stiefvater I’d read was Shiver, and I wasn’t a fan. I had no desire to pick up any more of her books because I just didn’t think her writing was for me, but seeing all the love for The Raven Cycle series on the blogosphere convinced me to give her books another chance.

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon

I saw only one review for this book before deciding to add it to my TBR list, but that one was all I needed. I brought the first and second books and sped through them, completely addicted. I actually finished reading The Bone Season during my lunch break at work, and despite having the paperback edition of The Mime Order waiting for me at home I brought another copy for my Kindle just so I could start reading it right away.
