The Rising Author Tag

We’re more than halfway through NaNoWriMo and after a pretty disastrous start to the week I’m happily back in a place where I can focus on writing and catching up on my word count. Also as it’s November and all of my energy is focused on my WIP it seemed like the perfect time to post another writing-related tag. I was tagged by May at Forever and Everly who is an amazing blogger and the person who’s pretty much solely responsible for getting me back into writing as well.

Thanks so much for the tag May, and for inspiring me because without you I wouldn’t be writing this post now (or writing my WIP either)!

What is your current WIP about, and what’s its status? (ie. plotting, writing, editing, etc.)

In a way I’m almost plotting, writing and editing my current WIP all at the same time; I’m writing, going back to re-write/edit what I’ve already written (because apparently I’m a compulsive editor), and planning the second half of the story all at the same time. The working title is Death Born (that will likely change, it already has a couple of times) and I see it ending up being a duology rather than a standalone (again, that will likely change).

It’s an idea that’s been floating around in my head for years now in one form or another. There’s plenty of magic and fairytale/mythology influences, and I’ve included strong sibling relationships, absolutely no girl hate or love triangles (because I hate those tropes), and plenty of diversity. I wrote 50K words last year during NaNoWriMo, and when I re-read it I was surprised to find not all of it was terrible, but I kind of hit a wall when it came to writing the second draft.

Story Aesthetic

Do you plot things out and/or outline, or just figure it out as you write?

I’ve tried both, and personally I think plotting things out is going to work the best for me. If I try and figure things out as I go I know I’ll get distracted by wild tangents that change the direction of my story, and after a while it can feel like I’m never getting anywhere because I keep re-writing the same thing over and over trying to make it better.

(Aka what happened to my failed second draft of Death Born).

What are some book ideas you want to write in the future?

Funny story when I started re-writing my current WIP for NaNo there was another story idea which took up space in my head and refused to stop distracting me, so while writing Death Born I’m always planning and plotting another WIP (so far untitled). Once my mind has settled on what it’s about I’ll be posting more about it (because after I’ve finished Death Born this is my next project).

New Project Aesthetic

I also have a couple ideas for sci-fi genre WIPs I’d love to get around to some day. One of them is for a fairytale retelling of some of my less retold childhood favourites – The Wild Swans, or The Snow Queen – set in space, and the other is about an epic heist (think Six of Crows style epic) set in multiple but connected worlds.

Out of the characters you’ve written so far, who are your favourites?

This will probably change but right now Rhian and Zeva. Zeva is more of an antihero than a straight up hero or villain; she has her own story separate from my main character (Aria) which I can’t wait to explore in more detail. Rhian on the other hand actually sticks close to Aria so it’s their relationship I enjoy writing, but also the fact that Rhian is a pirate who takes no prisoners (literally and metaphorically).

What’s your writing routine, if any? (ie. snacks, music, time of day, location, etc.)

I get most of my writing done in the evenings; I’m a night owl and I always stay up way too late even when I have to wake up for work really early. I’ll normally be sat in my chair, with a cup of tea nearby and some music playing in the background to help me concentrate. I’m actually planning on creating a playlist for my WIP and the characters I’m writing.

Show your WIP’s aesthetic in images or words (or both)!

I have a Pinterest board for Death Born, and updating it was one of my favourite parts of the planning process (I will admit I’ve likely spent more time on Pinterest searching for aesthetic images than I have actually planning my WIP). I’ve split my board into two sections; one for my character/story aesthetics and the other for world building inspiration.

What (or who) motivates you to write?

It’s 100% other bloggers. The reason I started writing again was because May was posting discussions on writing, and talking about NaNo and her potential WIP ideas. Since then it’s been following Sophie’s journeys as she starts and finishes her latest WIPs, taking part in the fun writing tags Kat creates, hearing Marie talk about the trials of editing her WIP, that keeps me going.

I love hearing other people talk about their writing, and hopefully people enjoy hearing me talk about my writing too.

What do you find is the easiest part about writing? The hardest?

The easiest part is writing once I get in the zone. I consider myself a mood writer (kind of like I’m a mood reader) and I write what I feel like writing. If I don’t want to write in chronological order (go from chapter one, to chapter two, to chapter three, etc.) because that’s not where my inspiration lies I will skip ahead. It makes it easier to get everything I want down on paper.

The hardest is the different tangents my story wants to go down once I start writing. When I start writing and get ‘in the zone’ it’s the easiest thing in the world to follow where the plot and the characters want to take me but that means I have to re-write pretty much everything, and it’s what led to me failing epically when it came to working on my second draft of Death Born.

What genre will you never try, and why?

As much as I love reading it I don’t think I’d ever try my hand at writing a magical realism story. It’s a genre full of so many beautifully written and magical books that it’s a lot of pressure to create something that could fit in, and I’m not confident enough in my writing skills to attempt it. I know there’d end up being something missing, and I wouldn’t end up doing the genre the justice it deserves.

Share a tiny (or large) snippet/excerpt of your writing, if you’re comfortable!

I am comfortable sharing my writing, but please bear in mind I’ve only just started working on this WIP properly and as of this moment there’s a lot of editing and planning that still needs to be done.

Seeing him standing there, almost unchanged by the years that had passed, Elias was hit with a wave of love and heartache that nearly drove him to his knees. He wanted to go back; back before Aria had been killed and Elias had been cursed, back to when Solon would smile at him and Elias knew he was the one constant in his life, back to when he could be sure of Solon’s love.

If only he’d been the child of the God of Time rather than the God of Death, maybe then he could have.

*

She didn’t move, didn’t turn away from what was left of Eirene.

Not as her father met the same fate, screaming for Zeva as the blow Death dealt nearly took his head off.

Not as Death wiped the blade on his cloak, smearing the blood of the two people Zeva had loved more than anyone else on the dark fabric.

She didn’t move, not until Death finally turned his attention back to Zeva.

“I begged you,” she whispered, her voice broken and hoarse from grief. “Is this your idea of mercy?”

*

“I’m not leaving until I speak to Rhian.”

“I am Rhian. Weren’t you listening?” The girl turned, one hand gazed the dagger sheathed at her waist, but she didn’t draw it, while the other she threw out to one side, indicating the ship they were standing on. “This is my ship.”

Davillir made to grab Aria’s arm, pull her back and reign her in. “Let’s not antagonise—”

Aria scoffed, dismissing the girl’s claim and authority, pulling herself free of Davillir and taking a step forwards, “I don’t know who you are, what you are, but you aren’t Rhian.”

I’m not going to tag anyone in The Rising Author Tag, so instead if you’re a writer and if you’re working on a WIP let me know what your answers for these questions would be.

Tell me what your current WIP is about and where in the planning or writing process you are? Let me know which of your characters is your favourite, and what you think the hardest part of writing is? And if there’s anyone out there who wants to take part consider yourself tagged.

  1. I was scrolling through, because I’m not a huge fan of WIP posts when I saw the picture of your hunny mug, this reminded me that some how my younger brother apparently didn’t know that hunny was such a well known way to misspell honey

    1. Yeah I really struggle moving past a page or chapter unless I’m 100% happy with it. I need to suppress that instinct during NaNo but I’m not great at it. 🙂
I have to be a night owl, I’m too tired in the mornings to be anything but! 😀
      Thanks so much. 🙂 ❤️

  2. Hi, I enjoyed reading your post. I love your aesthetics– they are beautiful 😍 I too get drawn into Pinterest when I am supposed to be productive but it just gathering inspiration so I need to do it, right?
I enjoyed reading your snippet, the story sounds intriguing and your writing is beautiful. Good luck with the rest of your writing 💛

  3. I love how other bloggers are the ones who motivate you to write, and from the sound of your writing experience so far, there’s definitely a passion there! Do you plan on publishing these books (self or major)? Or do you plan on simply sharing your story online with everyone, like a “hobby” or something? 😮

    1. Oh definitely, I love seeing other people talk about their WIPs and it just makes me want to work on my own more.
Honestly I haven’t throughly about that far ahead yet. It took me a while to gain the confidence to share snippets, maybe in the future I’ll share more but depends TBH. 🙂

  4. This is an amazing post, Beth! Your WIP sounds fascinating, and I love the aesthetics. Zeva and Rhian sound like such a great duet, I’d love to read more about them. I always admire fellow writers who are so committed to their stories; I feel like I have so many ideas, but never sit down to write them, so they just fizzle away and disappear. 😦

    1. Thanks so much Aimal, I’m really glad you enjoyed this post. 🙂
Yeah this is an idea that’s been floating around in my head for ages now. It’s had many different interpretations and drafts but I’m determined this time around to actually get somewhere with it.
A lot of my ideas fizzle out, but some of them last and those are the ones I commit to. 🙂

  5. Oooh your story sounds exciting! I’m glad blogging inspired you to get back to writing. I haven’t done NaNoWriMo in years but I used to always do it when I was younger! It’s so helpful to have that time dedicated to what you’re working on.

    1. Thanks so much, and yeah there’s a lot blogging has done for me but one of the best things is inspiring me to get back into writing again, and I’m so glad because I didn’t realise how much I’d missed it until I started again.
Exactly, and do you think you’ll ever do NaNoWriMo again one day?

Oh and I am so, so happy to hear that I could keep you motivated a little bit – other bloggers talking about their WIP always inspires me, too! ❤ ❤

    1. Oh I’m glad to hear that Marie, and thanks so much. 🙂 ❤ I've got more NaNo related posts to come still before November is over, and I think once it is I'm still going to try and talk more about my writing in general because it does help to keep me inspired.
Definitely, and yeah it's nice to know we're not alone writing and editing and struggling with character/plot related issues! 😀 ❤

  7. Hello Beth ❤
I am SOO glad to hear more about your WIP! I love your aesthetics and pinterest boards! I can tell that you've put a lot of thought into putting these together!
I LOVE your snippets so much! They bring up so many questions about the characters and they make me wonder what had happened in their past that brought about their present day circumstance. I can't wait to read more snippets and I would love to read your novel one day 🙂
I love your Hunny mug and your Hufflepuff pillow! (I have probably mentioned this before but I am a Hufflepuff too :D) That looks like a super comfy writing spot! I usually write in a cafe or on my bed haha. Unfortunately I don't have a couch (yet!) but that would be my ideal writing spot 🙂
Thank you for mentioning me in this post ❤ I always enjoy talking about writing and about our WIPs, since it motivates me to continue writing 🙂
I think I want to give this tag a try! Should I just answer the same questions that you've answered in this post?

    1. Oh I’m glad to hear that Sophie. 🙂 ❤ And yes I spent a long time on all my aesthetics, finding the perfect images (probably too much time when you consider how I'm behind on my NaNo word count and my planning for this WIP).
Thanks so much. I'm still working on finding out the answers to all the questions my characters are presenting myself. There'll be more snippets posted this month for sure. 😀
Yes, Hufflepuff's rule right? And I love Winnie-the-Pooh so I have plenty of related merch. Oh I need my chair to write in, I'd fall asleep if I tried writing in bed. 😀
That's all right, well I hope you keep talking about your writing because I love reading your posts.
Definitely do, I'd love to see your answers, and yes it'll be the same questions I answered. 🙂 ❤

      1. There has definitely been times when I felt so sleepy while writing that I decided to fall asleep haha 🙂
I am also sorting through my plot and my characters. These days I’ve been trying to figure out the motivation and goals of my MC again (it was in my outline, but… it might have changed? lol :’) )
Haha yes Hufflepuffs are awesome 🙂 I just watched the second Fantastic Beasts movie and Newt is so adorable haha ❤ I am a big fan ❤
For my next post I might talk more about my WIP and maybe post a snippet depending on how I feel! I hope to hear more about Death Born as well 🙂 ❤

      2. To be honest even when I’m sitting on a chair and writing I can still doze off if I’m tired enough, and I’m pretty much tired enough all the time! 😀
Oh WIPs change all the time, I’m kind of thankful mine hadn’t changed yet (guess I’ve finally hit on something I’m happy enough with that I don’t need to keep changing it).
I’m planning to see the second Fantastic Beasts film soon (hopefully next week!) And I cant wait!
Thanks Sophie, I’ll be looking forwards to your next writing post and I’ll be talking more about my WIP soon as well too. 😀 ❤

      3. It sounds like your WIP is going in the direction that you’ve intended, which is great! Do you think you are a planner now, rather than a pantser? 🙂
Hope that you enjoy the second Fantastic Beasts movie! I liked it haha, and I think Eddie Redmayne did a great job as Newt 🙂

      4. I think in the long run planning helps me more but there’s always going to be an element of pantsing to my writing. I still have to find something that works for me I guess.
I’m seeing it tonight, and I’m so excited. I’ve heard good things from fro ends despite the mixed reviews from critics so fingers crossed I’ll enjoy it! 😀

        Liked by 1 person

      5. I think a mash-up of planning and plantsing can work wonderfully if that’s what you’re inclined towards! I’ve accepted that 100% planning will make me bored (during both the planning and the writing stages) and 100% pantsing will make me feel disorganized and nervous, so that’s how I’ve settled down with a mixed approach!
Let me know how you like the movie!! I think I agree that critically speaking the movie isn’t perfect however I loved the characters and the actors so overall it was a great experience 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      6. I think that’s how going 100% either way makes me feel as well. I need to have some room to improvise but if I give myself too much room I’ll just fail at sticking to one idea.
Well I think it was a good film but not as good as the first one and there were a few thing I was a bit “ehh” about. Still yeah the characters and actors were all great. 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      7. Sounds like it’ll take some trial and error but I think eventually you will figure out a mix of planning and plantsing that works out for you.
Sorry to hear that you didn’t like the fantastic beasts movie as much as the first one, though that’s great that you still liked the characters 🙂 I should watch the first movie these days, which I haven’t seen yet!

        Liked by 1 person

      8. Oh definitely, I feel like ever since I started writing it’s been somewhat trial and error. 🙂
Yeah there were good parts about the movie, but too many off parts as well. When it comes down to it the first one was much better in my opinion. 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      9. Oh wow, that’s awesome that you read the screenplays too. I find that I don’t always catch what the characters say in the movies (sometimes they speak fast or mumble hahah) so reading the screenplay sounds like a great idea 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      10. That’s pretty cool that you can play a movie in the background. I would love to do multiple things at once when I am blogging or writing, but I would be too distracted 🙂 I always admire people who know movie scenes/lines by heart!

  8. Great answers Beth! 😀 I hope you’re writing is coming along! Don’t you just love when other stories start to pop in your head and you just want to write everything all at once. I think that’s why I think writing a novel is so daunting… I feel like I wouldn’t be able to get all my thoughts together and coherent enough.
    P.s. I love your Hunny mug! 😀

    1. Thanks so much Meghan, and yeah my writing is definitely going somewhere (not 100% sure where though). Yes for sure, I feel like I always have a few WIP ideas floating in my head even as I’m working on actually writing one. For me writing a novel and having so many WIPs in my mind is daunting because it’s wondering when I’m going to have time to write them and write them well you know?
Thanks, I love Winnie-the-Pooh so I have plenty of merch. 😀

      1. You’re welcome! 😀 I think that’s also the fun of it all, not knowing where our writing will take us! I hope you have fun on the journey!
But, yes I do feel you! If only we had all the time in the world to just write what came to us! 🙂

    1. Thanks so much, and no go ahead. I’d love seeing your answers for this one, learning more about your WIPs and your characters. That’s all right, honestly your Write tags help me so much because I always learn so much about my characters from them. Ha, yeah you’re getting WIP overload this month on my blog, it just helps me stay motivated to actually write it when I talk about it.
Thanks so so much, and there’ll be a few more snippets posted before this month is over. 🙂 ❤
