Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Backlist Books I Want to Read

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Backlist Books I Want to Read.

Honestly at this point I almost have too many backlist books to count. My TBR list is a little out of control and I keep saying there are books I’ll get around to soon but I know myself and “soon” for me doesn’t seem to have the same meaning as it does for everyone else. The ten books I picked this week are books I’d love to say are a priority of mine, books I’ve moved to the top of my TBR list, but part of me thinks they’ll still be on my TBR list the next time a backlist TTT topic comes around.

Top Ten Tuesday #126

The Mermaid by Christina Henry

Christina Henry’s books are dark, but there’s something addictive about them. Alice had me hooked on her writing, and Lost Boys was the first Peter Pan retelling I’ve read that got a five star rating from me. The Mermaid will be one of those books on my TBR list I’ll pick up on a whim and be unable to put down again.

The Forbidden Wish by Jessica Khoury

Fairytale retellings are normally not only an automatic add to my TBR list but the kind of books I get around to sooner rather than later. I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about The Forbidden Wish, plus there aren’t too many Aladdin retelling out there, so I’m sure I’ll love it too.

Kingdom of Ash and Briars by Hannah West

Next to Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instrument series (which also made my list this week) Kingdom of Ash and Briars is one of the longest lasting books on my TBR list. I’m not sure why I haven’t picked it up yet, it sounds like the kind of story I love, I just keep forgetting it’s still on my TBR list is all.

Down Among the Sticks and Bones by Seanan McGuire

Every Heart a Doorway was such a beautiful story, and I was so excited when I realised it wasn’t a stand-alone like I thought. Down Among the Sticks and Bones was added to the very top of my TBR list but it’s slowly sunk own as I’ve kept putting reading it off. I may have to make it a 2019 priority.

The Girl in the Tower by Katherine Arden

This is another series where I loved the first book but still haven’t gotten around to the second. I was so sure when my copy of The Girl in the Tower arrived in my hands in August that I’d start it right away, but I didn’t. Every month since then I’ve meant to start it, and every month since then I just haven’t.

Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco

I am a huge history nerd, and when I read the blurb for Stalking Jack the Ripper I knew it was a book written for me. The release of two more in the series have just further convinced me of that fact, and despite the somewhat mixed reviews I’ve seen I’m still really excited to finally pick this one up.

The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly

I’m not sure how I discovered this book, but reading the blurb brings to mind some of my favourite ‘classics’ like The Night Circus and The Princess Bride, not so much in terms of the plot but in terms of the feel of the stories. Plus The Book of Lost Things seems like it will be an ideal winter read too.

City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare

The second half of The Mortal Instruments series has been on my TBR list since before City of Fallen Angels was even released. This is the longest surviving book still on my TBR list and I need to get through this series before I can start Lady Midnight so there’s plenty of motivation there, just not much desire.

A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet stood out from all the other sci-fi books I’ve read before or since. It was a beautiful written story and I know A Closed and Common Orbit is going to be just as beautiful, but given how long I’ve left it I need to re-read the first book before I can pick up this one.

The Assassin’s Blade by Sarah J. Maas

Originally my aim was to re-read the whole of the Throne of Glass series, and finally pick up both The Assassin’s Blade and Tower of Dawn for the first time, in the run up to the release of Kingdom of Ash. You can probably guess that the fact that this book made it onto my list this week means that didn’t happen.

So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what backlist book you want to read. Did any of the ones that made my list make yours, or have you already read these releases (if so what ones do you think I need to get around to ASAP, to drop everything and read)?

  2. I adore The Book of Lost Things! Hope you get to that one soon – I’d say you’ve got the right idea with it being atmospheric like The Night Circus! They’re both favourites of mine.

I also really enjoyed The Mermaid 😊

    1. There’s just so many books to get around to but not enough time to read them all right?!
The Forbidden Wish is high on my TBR list, and Kingdom of Ash and Briars should be too before I forget it again.

  6. The Forbidden Wish and The Book of Lost Things both sound amazing, I really want to read them! I really enjoyed The Assassin’s Blade, but I still haven’t finished Tower of Dawn. I’m gonna try and finish it this month. Chaol is not my fave character, but from what I’ve read so far I am actually enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. I can’t wait to read Kingdom of Ash!

    1. They sound like exactly the kind of books I love, fairytale inspired/retellings with plenty of magic. 🙂 Honestly I don’t know why I haven’t gotten around to them before this. Chaos’s not really my favourite character either, which I know is why I haven’t picked up Tower of Dawn. I will have to though, I can’t read Kingdom of Ash without reading both The Assassin’s Blade And Tower of Dawn first. 😀

      1. I love those kind of books too, although I don’t pick them up nearly as often as I should! And yep totally understand. Kind of wish I could skip Tower of Dawn because I’m soo desperate to get to Kingdom of Ash, but I still have like 600 pages of ToD to go haha.

  7. Down Among the Sticks and Bones was terrific, as is the book that comes after. I’m planning on reading City of Fallen Angels next. I recently discovered the series and I just LOVE it. 🙂
