Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Favourite Ghost Stories

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is a Halloween freebie, so I picked Top Ten Favourite Ghost Stories.

I’m not a massive fan of the horror genre – I had a very scarring experience when I watched Silence of the Lambs, Deep Blue Sea and Final Destination when I was only ten years old – so a lot of these aren’t strictly ghosts stories as much as they’re books that feature ghosts. Honestly though that’s the kind of Halloween I like, settling in with a book that captures the mood of the season without scaring me to death.

Top Ten Tuesday #124

City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab

This book is the perfect Halloween read. Set in Edinburgh, a city with plenty of ghost stories and urban legends, City of Ghosts follows Cassidy as she discovers more about her ability to travel through the Veil and tries to escape the clutches of the Red Raven.

My Plain Jane by Cynthia Hand, Jodi Meadows and Brodi Ashton

Granted this wasn’t a favourite of mine, but it wasn’t the ghost-filled plot that let the book down for me. My Plain Jane re-imagines the story of Jane Eyre but gives Jane the ability to see ghosts and adds a sinister mystery to the character of Mr Rochester.

The Archived by Victoria Schwab

Another Victoria Schwab book for this week’s list, just in case it wasn’t obvious she’s one of my favourite authors. The Archived has a different view of life after death to City of Ghosts, in this book the dead are shelved like books, and it’s when they wake that trouble is caused for Mac.

Wild Beauty by Anna-Marie McLemore

It’s hard to describe Wild Beauty. It’s a magical realism book by one of my favourite authors and I don’t think I’d ever be able to do it justice trying to summarise the story, but it’s a magically written story, and an appropriate reading if you’re looking for a beautifully haunting book.

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

There’s nothing that says ghost stories quite like The Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvater. The first book opens with Blue in a graveyard where she meets the spirit of Gansey who is going to die at some point in the next year. From that opening it’s a hunt through magical forests for a long dead Welsh King for Blue, Gansey, Adam, Ronan and Noah.

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon

The Bone Season series is an all-time favourite of mine. Set in an alternate dystopian version of London Paige is a Dreamwalker, which means she’s committing a crime just by being alive. All clairvoyants have a connection to the spirit realm, which is what makes The Bone Season a perfect pick for this list.

The Summoning by Kelley Armstrong

Kelley Armstrong was one of my favourite authors a few years ago, and although I haven’t read her Darkest Powers trilogy in a while it’s a great series. Chloe is a necromancer, she can see and control the dead, and if nothing else the way she discovers her ability in the first book is terrifying.

Love You to Death by Meg Cabot

I can’t do a Top Ten Tuesday topic on ghosts stories and not include the Mediator series. More fluffy and light than scary these were my favourite books growing up, and the subject of so many conversations I had with my friends when I was in high school.

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor

The beginning of Strange the Dreamer really sets the tone for the book, opening on a dying blue-skinned girl surrounded by moths. Going back we follow Lazlo and Sarai’s story from beginning to that ending, and along the way meet Minya who can control the ghosts of Weep.

The Star-Touched Queen by Laini Taylor

This is one of the more beautiful books I’ve ever read, and the world-building is incredible. Maya’s horoscope has always foretold death and destruction, but when she becomes the wife of Amar and queen of Akran she discovers the otherworldly realm is full of ghosts and spirits to be reincarnated.

So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what you picked for this week’s themed free-for-all, or what ghosts stories you love. Do you like books that scare you to death or do you prefer lighter stories like the kind I featured this week?

  1. Oooh i love this. I loved The Raven Boys & City of Ghosts too! I have Strange the Dreamer but didn’t know there’s ghosts in it! I also own The Archived, I just haven’t got to it. Now I have such a urge to read the rest of The Raven Cycle series first!

    1. Thanks so much. The Raven Cycle is an all-time favourite of mine, and everything V.E. Schwab writes is incredible in my opinion. I’d definitely recommend picking up the rest of The Raven Cycle series, The Archived books, and oh my god of course Strange the Dreamer. It’s such a beautiful story. 🙂

  2. Hi Beth 🙂
If I were to do this TTT meme, my post would be empty haha, since I barely read horror books! However I’ve been hearing lots of good things about City of Ghosts, and it’s been popping up everywhere on my blog feed, so maybe it is an omen 🙂

    1. Well I thought mine would be empty as well and I ended up surprised, so it may have been the same for you you never know! 😀
City of Ghosts is really good, and if you don’t like horror I’d say it’s a good one to start off with because it’s not a horror ghost story. 🙂 ❤

      1. Hahahaha 🙂 I suppose I could think of a few novels for this list, though I’d probably end up sneaking in some not-very-horror novels on there! (I think parts of the Illuminae series gave me chills hahaha so would that qualify? XD)
Glad to hear!!! Maybe I’ll read City of Ghosts in December 🙂

      2. There’s always one or two I think, even if they’re not technically horror some of the fantasy books we’ve both read could count (like the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy has resurrectionists, I’d put that on a Halloween TBR list for sure!)

  3. City of ghosts is a good one. And I like that you included raven boys 😀 Strange the dreamer is such an excellent choice!! The mediator is a fun one as well. And this makes me even more keen to read star touched queen- I’ve had it on my tbr for ages!
    Awesome list!! 😀

    1. Yeah I had to include at least one V.E. Schwab book on my list this week. Her writing is just incredible. Strange the Dreamer is one of my favourite duologies (I recently finished Muse of Nightmares and loved it). The Star-Touched Queen is such a beautiful read, I’ll highly recommend it, I’m sure you’ll love it as well.
      Thanks so much. 🙂 ❤

  4. I couldn’t agree more about The Raven Boys, The City of Ghosts and The Mediator Series! Stiefvater really surprised me with her amazing writing and left me feeling haunted… I honestly wasn’t expecting to become as attached to those characters as I was! And then Schwab did it again, of course. There’s no book that woman produces that doesn’t enchant me.
Meg Cabot was a favourite of mine growing up too! I loved everything from her paranormals to her fluffy contemporaries to her regency books. I unfortunately haven’t been reading that much from her lately but I certainly plan to do it in the future.
Wonderful post, Beth! 🙂 And thanks for the trip to memory lane ❤

    1. Yeah when it comes to Stiefvater’s books they’re not what I could call classic scary stories but there’s just something about her writing that makes it perfect for the season. Honestly I feel like I could have featured any book by her on my list this week and it would have been a good choice (but TRC series is my fave so I had to pick that one!)
Oh I’m the same, Meg Cabot was a favourite author of mine when I was a teen but I guess I’ve grown out of her writing a little. It’s a shame but I’m always going to love her older books.
Thanks so much, and that’s all right. I’m really glad you enjoyed this post Sophie. :)<3

    1. Maybe if I’d have watched it now I would have enjoyed it life, rather than having a scarring experience watching it when I was ten! 🙂
Yeah it’s not scary but it’s appropriate for the season. My kind of Halloween read TBH. 😀

  5. Oh dear, I don’t think they really made Silence of the Lambs for 10 year olds! I haven’t seen it yet, but sorry about that experience. I’ve seen City of Ghosts on a couple of tbrs and wanted to read it, good to know it’s worth it!

  6. i love these choices so muchh, all the ones I haven’t read yet seem like things I’d like to check out!!!!! I almost forgot about My Plain Jane! It wasn’t my favorite but the characters were kind of lovable??? I’m blanking on most of the story and it’s only been a few weeks, send helpppppp
I’m currently depressed bc one of my friends hates Noah from Raven Cycle, how can anyone hate that sweet innocent poor soul?? he says Noah isn’t necessary and is just kind of thrown in, + he’s not very smart. THIS OPINION IS 100000% NOT VALID, NOAH IS THE GLUE OF HIS FRIENDSHIP CIRCLE, the books wouldn’t be the same without him slkdjfdlskj
I do wish Blue would’ve stayed close w him though, I feel like their relationship kind of peaks, then vanishes???? where are my Blue and Noah play dates? we only got 1 D:

    1. Thanks so much Malanie. 🙂 ❤ Yeah I wasn't a massive fan of My Plain Jane either (though I do still remember a fair amount of the plot) but I really liked Charlotte and Alexander's characters so that saved the book for me.
What?! No really?! Granted Noah wasn't my favourite character (that was Ronan) but I still really loved him. I don't think I hated any of the characters from TRC though it took me a little while to warm up to Adam, but Noah would have been last on my list of characters to hate.
I just would have loved more Noah in general! 😀 ❤

  7. I love your choices, Beth! ❤ I'm not a fan of horror at all, either – I'm way too scared for that haha. You picked out some great books here – I loved The Raven Boys and the atmosphere of this series so, so much. I haven't read The Archived series just yet, but I'm going to very soon and I'm excited, the concept sounds so unique and very cool, too 😀

    1. Thanks so much Marie! 🙂 ❤ Ha, yeah when it comes to horror books like these (light paranormal-horror) are my limit. The Raven Cycle is of course a favourite, the atmosphere of the story and the setting just makes it a perfect Halloween read, and I really hope you enjoy The Archived series too. It's not my favourite by Schwab but it's still a great duology with a really unique concept. 🙂 ❤

  8. These are such great answers! And I’m actually surprised at the number of books I’ve read from this list, since I’m not usually a horror/ghost/paranormal reader…I’ve read Strange the Dreamer, City of Ghosts, and My Plain Jane – all of which I enjoyed. Anyways, thanks for a lovely post! I hope you have a great Halloween 🙂

    1. Thanks so much. Yeah I’m not a huge fan of ghosts stories, but these are all books I loved, and I didn’t struggle much to come up with ten either so I guess I enjoy them more than I think. 😀
Thanks again, and yes I hope you have a great Halloween too. 🙂 ❤

    1. Oh definitely, when it comes to ghost stories just the idea of the afterlife V.E. Schwab came up with is so incredibly unique. City of Ghosts really made the most of Edinburgh as a setting, that’s one of the main things that stood out for me about the story. 🙂
