Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books on my Fall 2018 TBR List

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Books on my Fall 2018 TBR List.

I already have a TBR list that grows longer with every passing second thanks to WordPress, but with all the amazing books being released (some of which are my most anticipated release for this year overall) I wonder if I’ll ever get to the end of it. Still as much as being a mood reader means I pick up what books I want to when I want to there are some reads I know I’ll be starting as soon as I can get a copy of the book in my hands.

Top Ten Tuesday #120

The Raging Ones by Krista Ritchie and Becca Ritchie

When I saw a review for this book on Lilly’s blog I know that I needed to get around to this one ASAP. Me and Lilly have similar taste in books and not only did she make The Raging Ones sound incredible in her review but she loved it so I know I will too.

In a freezing world, where everyone knows the day they will die, three teens break all odds.

Franny Bluecastle, a tough city teen, dreams of dying in opulence, to see wealth she’s never known. Like the entire world, she believes it’s impossible to dodge a deathday.

Until the day she does.

Court Icecastle knows wealth. He also knows pain. Spending five years in Vorkter Prison, a fortress of ice and suffering, he dreams of life beyond the people that haunt him and the world that imprisoned him.

Mykal Kickfall fights for those he loves. The rugged Hinterlander shares a frustrating yet unbreakable connection with Court—which only grows more lawless and chaotic as their senses and emotions connect with Franny.

With the threat of people learning they’ve dodged their deathdays, they must flee their planet to survive. But to do so, all three will have to hide their shared bond as they vie for a highly sought after spot in the newest mission to space. Against thousands of people far smarter, who’ll live longer, and never fear death the way that they do.

The Girl in the Tower by Katherine Arden

The Bear and the Nightingale was a top read of mine, and based on the reviews I’ve seen I know I’ll love The Girl in the Tower just as much. The reason I haven’t picked it up yet? I’m not sure, but this will be a book I get around to sooner rather than later.

For a young woman in medieval Russia, the choices are stark: marriage or a life in a convent. Vasya will choose a third way: magic…

The court of the Grand Prince of Moscow is plagued by power struggles and rumours of unrest. Meanwhile bandits roam the countryside, burning the villages and kidnapping its daughters. Setting out to defeat the raiders, the Prince and his trusted companion come across a young man riding a magnificent horse.

Only Sasha, a priest with a warrior’s training, recognises this ‘boy’ as his younger sister, thought to be dead or a witch by her village. But when Vasya proves herself in battle, riding with remarkable skill and inexplicable power, Sasha realises he must keep her secret as she may be the only way to save the city from threats both human and fantastical…

Wildcard by Marie Lu

This is one of my most anticipated releases of the year (but after the way Warcross ended how could it be anything but?!) I am so excited for Wildcard’s release and I know this will be a book I start the very second it’s in my hands.

Emika Chen barely made it out of the Warcross Championships alive. Now that she knows the truth behind Hideo’s new NeuroLink algorithm, she can no longer trust the one person she’s always looked up to, who she once thought was on her side.

Determined to put a stop to Hideo’s grim plans, Emika and the Phoenix Riders band together, only to find a new threat lurking on the neon-lit streets of Tokyo. Someone’s put a bounty on Emika’s head, and her sole chance for survival lies with Zero and the Blackcoats, his ruthless crew. But Emika soon learns that Zero isn’t all that he seems—and his protection comes at a price.

Caught in a web of betrayal, with the future of free will at risk, just how far will Emika go to take down the man she loves?

Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas

Really I shouldn’t just have the last book in the series on my list this week, but the whole of the Throne of Glass series – along with Tower of Dawn and The Assassin’s Blade which I still haven’t read once yet – which I plan to re-read before the release of Kingdom of Ash.

Years in the making, Sarah J. Maas’s #1 New York Times bestselling Throne of Glass series draws to an epic, unforgettable conclusion. Aelin Galathynius’s journey from slave to king’s assassin to the queen of a once-great kingdom reaches its heart-rending finale as war erupts across her world…

Aelin has risked everything to save her people―but at a tremendous cost. Locked within an iron coffin by the Queen of the Fae, Aelin must draw upon her fiery will as she endures months of torture. Aware that yielding to Maeve will doom those she loves keeps her from breaking, though her resolve begins to unravel with each passing day…

With Aelin captured, Aedion and Lysandra remain the last line of defence to protect Terrasen from utter destruction. Yet they soon realize that the many allies they’ve gathered to battle Erawan’s hordes might not be enough to save them. Scattered across the continent and racing against time, Chaol, Manon, and Dorian are forced to forge their own paths to meet their fates. Hanging in the balance is any hope of salvation―and a better world.

And across the sea, his companions unwavering beside him, Rowan hunts to find his captured wife and queen―before she is lost to him forever.

As the threads of fate weave together at last, all must fight, if they are to have a chance at a future. Some bonds will grow even deeper, while others will be severed forever in the explosive final chapter of the Throne of Glass series.

Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor

Of all the books I featured on my list this week Muse of Nightmares is my most anticipated book, not just within this top ten or within the second half of the year but for the whole of 2018. Then again considering how much I love Laini Taylor is that much of a surprise for anyone?

Sarai has lived and breathed nightmares since she was six years old.
She believed she knew every horror, and was beyond surprise.
She was wrong.

In the wake of tragedy, neither Lazlo nor Sarai are who they were before. One a god, the other a ghost, they struggle to grasp the new boundaries of their selves as dark-minded Minya holds them hostage, intent on vengeance against Weep.

Lazlo faces an unthinkable choice – save the woman he loves, or everyone else? – while Sarai feels more helpless than ever. But is she? Sometimes, only the direst need can teach us our own depths, and Sarai, the muse of nightmares, has not yet discovered what she’s capable of.

As humans and godspawn reel in the aftermath of the citadel’s near fall, a new foe shatters their fragile hopes, and the mysteries of the Mesarthim are resurrected: Where did the gods come from, and why? What was done with thousands of children born in the citadel nursery? And most important of all, as forgotten doors are opened and new worlds revealed: Must heroes always slay monsters, or is it possible to save them instead?

Love and hate, revenge and redemption, destruction and salvation all clash in this gorgeous sequel to the New York Times bestseller, Strange the Dreamer.

Words in Deep Blue by Cath Crowley

I’ve seen some incredible reviews for this book (and the fact that the blurb describes it as perfect for fans of Jandy Nelson is a major selling point for me) so I can’t wait to start this one. For me there’s something about Words in Deep Blue that makes it a perfect autumn read.

A beautiful love story for fans of Jandy Nelson and Nicola Yoon: two teens find their way back to each other in a bookstore full of secrets and crushes, grief and hope—and letters hidden between the pages.

Years ago, Rachel had a crush on Henry Jones. The day before she moved away, she tucked a love letter into his favourite book in his family’s bookshop. She waited. But Henry never came.

Now Rachel has returned to the city – and to the bookshop – to work alongside the boy she’d rather not see, if at all possible, for the rest of her life. But Rachel needs the distraction. Her brother drowned months ago, and she can’t feel anything anymore.

As Henry and Rachel work side by side – surrounded by books, watching love stories unfold, exchanging letters between the pages – they find hope in each other. Because life may be uncontrollable, even unbearable sometimes. But it’s possible that words, and love, and second chances are enough.

Blanca & Roja by Anna-Marie McLemore

When it comes to magical realism there is no better author I’ve read than Anna-Marie McLemore, her books are as beautifully written as the covers on the outside are. Blanca & Roja is another of my most anticipated releases of 2018 and I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

The biggest lie of all is the story you think you already know.

The del Cisne girls have never just been sisters; they’re also rivals, Blanca as obedient and graceful as Roja is vicious and manipulative. They know that, because of a generations-old spell, their family is bound to a bevy of swans deep in the woods. They know that, one day, the swans will pull them into a dangerous game that will leave one of them a girl, and trap the other in the body of a swan.

But when two local boys become drawn into the game, the swans’ spell intertwines with the strange and unpredictable magic lacing the woods, and all four of their fates depend on facing truths that could either save or destroy them. Blanca & Roja is the captivating story of sisters, friendship, love, hatred, and the price we pay to protect our hearts.

The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy by Mackenzi Lee

The hype for The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue kind of passed me by (until I read it for myself and fell in love) but the hype for this one certainly hasn’t. Based on everything I’ve heard from people who have read The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy I know I’m going to love it.

Felicity Montague is through with pretending she prefers society parties to books about bone setting—or that she’s not smarter than most people she knows, or that she cares about anything more than her dream of becoming a doctor.

A year after an accidentally whirlwind tour of Europe, which she spent evading highwaymen and pirates with her brother Monty, Felicity has returned to England with two goals in mind—avoid the marriage proposal of Callum Doyle, a lovestruck suitor from Edinburgh; and enrol in medical school. However, her intellect and passion will never be enough in the eyes of the administrators, who see men as the sole guardians of science.

But then a small window of hope opens. Doctor Alexander Platt, an eccentric physician that Felicity idolizes, is looking for research assistants, and Felicity is sure that someone as forward thinking as her hero would be willing to take her on. However, Platt is in Germany, preparing to wed Felicity’s estranged childhood friend Johanna. Not only is Felicity reluctant to opening old wounds, she also has no money to make the trip.

Luckily, a mysterious young woman is willing to pay Felicity’s way, so long as she’s allowed to travel with Felicity disguised as her maid. In spite of her suspicions, Felicity agrees, but once the girl’s true motives are revealed, Felicity becomes part of a perilous quest that will lead her from the German countryside to the promenades of Zurich to secrets lurking beneath the Atlantic.

Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare

As Queen of Air and Darkness is being released in December I can finally get around to Lady Midnight and Lord of Shadows. Granted I do have to read the second half of The Mortal Instruments series first, but I’m more excited about finally getting to start The Dark Artifices trilogy.

In a kingdom by the sea…

In a secret world where half-angel warriors are sworn to fight demons, parabatai is a sacred word.

A parabatai is your partner in battle. A parabatai is your best friend. Parabatai can be everything to each other—but they can never fall in love.

Emma Carstairs is a warrior, a Shadowhunter, and the best in her generation. She lives for battle. Shoulder to shoulder with her parabatai, Julian Blackthorn, she patrols the streets of Los Angeles, where vampires party on the Sunset Strip, and faeries – the most powerful of supernatural creatures – teeter on the edge of open war with Shadowhunters. When the bodies of humans and faeries turn up murdered in the same way Emma’s parents were when she was a child, an uneasy alliance is formed. This is Emma’s chance for revenge—and Julian’s chance to get back his brother Mark, who is being held prisoner by the faerie Courts. All Emma, Mark, and Julian have to do is solve the murders within two weeks…and before the murderer targets them.

Their search takes Emma from sea caves full of sorcery to a dark lottery where death is dispensed. And each clue she unravels uncovers more secrets. What has Julian been hiding from her all these years? Why does Shadowhunter Law forbid parabatai to fall in love? Who really killed her parents—and can she bear to know the truth?

The darkly magical world of Shadowhunters has captured the imaginations of millions of readers across the globe. Join the adventure in Lady Midnight, the long-awaited first volume of a new trilogy from Cassandra Clare.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling

In my mind there’s nothing that screams autumn as much as the Harry Potter series does. I need to re-read this series and I feel like October and November are going to be the perfect months to pick these books up again.

Harry Potter thinks he is an ordinary boy—until he is rescued by an owl, taken to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, learns to play Quidditch and does battle in a deadly duel. The reason…Harry Potter is a wizard!

So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what books are on your fall 2018 TBR list? Would any of the books I featured make your list, and what’s your most anticipated release for the second half of the year?

  1. There are too many books on here that I still need to read (and we are in 2019 now and you’ve probably read some of these but hahaha not me) The list includes Muse of Nightmares, Throne of Glass, the rest of the Shadowhunter series, Wildcard, and the Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue. I still also want to reread Harry Potter because I want to watch the movies. (I’ve only seen up to Goblet of Fire)

    1. Unfortunately I didn’t get to as many of them as I would have liked. Some of them are now on my 2019 TBR list! 😀
Muse of Nightmares is incredible though, I’m sure you’ll love it, same goes for The Gentleman’s Guide. Oh you could do a re-read and watch the movies at the same time! That’s my plan for Harry Potter when I get around to it! 🙂

      1. Yea that’s my plan for Harry Potter too! My boyfriend and I are reading them together and then watching the movies although he is ahead of me (I have not started Chamber of Secrets and he is on Prisoner of Azkaban). Hopefully I’ll get to most of these soon!

      1. I took the summer to read all the books I was gifted or got in books swaps because my stack was out of control. Once I read those I started checking some out of the library again. It felt good to get the stack read. I could believe I had let those amazing reads just sit there for so long.

    1. Thanks so much, and oh I know that feeling, I’d hoped to get around to Wildcard this week but then life got in the way and it looks like I won’t be able to start it until next week now 😦 but I hope you continue to love it Caro. I’m sure the rest will be as amazing as the 80 pages you’ve read so far. 🙂 ❤️

  2. So excited for some of these!!!! I CANNOT wait to have Muse of Nightmares in my hands. I feel like it’s been a century since I last read Strange the Dreamer. Wildcard is definitely on my list too though I think I can wait a bit before getting going on it since I have so many other books to read before then LOL. My eye is also on A Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy. I’m dying to see Felicity in action and it’d also be wonderful to see Monty and Percy again ❤ And I'm just as bad as you. Kingdom of Ash is on my TBR even though I haven't read the third book in the series yet. I gotta read faster 😂😭 Great post, Beth!

    1. Same here, I’m going to need to re-read Strange the Dreamer before I pick up the second book, if not I’ll be lost. I’m hoping to start Wildcard really soon, I just need to finish my re-read of Warcross. I know the feeling though because there are just too many amazing books being released I can’t keep up with them all.
The Lady’s Guide is one I will pick up the second I have it in my hands, I really can’t wait for more from Felicity, Monty and Percy. Oh you’ve got a fair bit of catching up to do then, but I’m sure you’ll manage it. 🙂 ❤️
      Thanks so much Azia. 😀

      1. I’m jumping into Muse of Nightmares without having reread Strange the Dreamer and it’s a bit tough to remember everything that was going on before. So smart move on rereading Strange LOL. I’d love to see your thoughts on Wildcard. I want to read it, but it’s not really high up on my to-read list, so a little extra boost might do the trick haha
I hope you enjoy/have enjoyed The Lady’s Guide! I’ve heard nothing but good things so far! 😀
        No worries 😊

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Well I still need to find the time to re-read Strange, but I’m not starting Muse before I have so I’ll get around to it sooner rather than later.
Wildcard was good, but not as good as Warcross in my opinion, and I haven’t read The Lady’s Guide yet. It doesn’t come out in the UK until November! :/

        Liked by 1 person

      3. I’ve heard that about Wildcard. I think I’m okay with putting it off for some time. There are so many other books I’d love to read first 😀
And really?! Well then November can’t come soon enough can it? LOL.

  3. AHHH WORDS IN DEEP BLUE! I am so happy to see this book on your list and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on that one. I really enjoyed it, it was a beautiful read ❤ ❤
I also can't wait to read Wildcard, I've been anticipating this book for so long, I'm glad it is finally released. I hope it will meet all of our expectations.
Blanca & Roja sounds amazing – but then again, all of McLemore's books sound amazing, I really need to read ALL of them haha. Hope you'll love this one!
    Happy reading! 😀

    1. I’ve heard some great things about that book, I can’t wait to get around to it because I have a feeling it will end up being a fave contemporary of mine. 🙂
Same here, my expectations are high (and I’ve heard some worrying things about negative reviews) but I’m still hopeful. It’s Marie Lu so it had to be epic right?! 🙂
Anna-Marie McLemore could release her shopping list and it would sound amazing and be beautifully written I’m sure. 😀 I really can’t wait for Blanca & Roja!
Thanks Marie, you too. 🙂 ❤️

  4. Omg, major yes to several of these. The Lady’s Guide, Muse of Nightmares, Wildcard, and Harry Potter (YAY)!! I’ll get back to Lady Midnight eventually, I just have to finally finish the original Mortal Instruments series so I understand what the hell is going on. Looks like you’ll have a great Autumn!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. The first three are highly anticipated releases of mine, and there’s something about the Harry Potter series that just makes it a perfect autumn read for me. Actually I still need to finish The Mortal Instruments series as well, but my plan is to get around to that before Queen of Air and Darkness is released so I can jump right into Lady Midnight. Thanks I hope you have a good autumn Ashley! 🙂 ❤️

      1. Haha, at least I’m not the only one with a bit of Cassie Clare catch up to do! Queen of Air and Darkness is a good motivator. At least then all the books will be out so we can just binge read.
Harry Potter’s fabulous all year round but I can definitely understand why it’d be a nice autumn book to snuggle with.
        You too Beth! 😊❤️

        Liked by 1 person

      2. It’s definitely my motivator as well. I started a re-read earlier this year to force myself to finally progress beyond City of Fallen Angels and got through City of Bones and City of Ashes. I’ll have to go back and finish them all and then finally make it to TDA.

  5. Oh, you have so many incredible books in your fall TBR!! 😍 I’m extremely excited for Wildcard as well (although I’ve heard some disappointing reviews, sigh). I’m also really excited to read The Lady’s Guide; I’ve heard nothing but great things about it! 💗 I hope you enjoy all your fall reads, Beth 😊

    1. Thanks, and yeah I really can’t wait to get around to these ones. 🙂 Someone else mentioned that, I haven’t seen any reviews and I’m avoiding them until I’ve had a chance to read Wildcard myself but I’m a little worried now. Oh you just know The Lady’s Guide is going to be incredible, I really can’t wait for that one, and thanks Dezzy. I hope all your fall reads are amazing too. 🙂 ❤️

  6. I am SO excited for Wildcard!! It is the next one up on my TBR!
You’ve reminded me that Muse of Nightmares is coming out soon as well! I can’t wait to continue reading about Lazlo and Sarai’s adventures.
I’m glad to hear that you are rereading HP soon. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts! Happy reading ❤

    1. Ahh, yeah I need to re-read Warcross and then it’s Wildcard time and I can’t wait! 😀
Muse of Nightmares is going to be amazing. I need to know how it all ends for Lazlo and Sarai, and my re-read of HP is top of my priorities for around October/November so I’ll let you know for sure.
Thanks Sophie, you too. 🙂 ❤️

      1. I just finished Wildcard yesterday and enjoyed it 🙂 In retrospect I really should have reread Warcross first because I realized there were some parts that I forgot in the first book haha.

  7. Aahhh I’m so excited to get to finally read Wildcard! I’ve been seeing a lot of disappointed reviews from people I trust so I have to say my expectations are a little lower now (though maybe that’s a good thing!), but I’m still super excited to read it and find out what happens! Marie Lu is my queen ❤

And yesss! I was so lucky to get an ARC of Blanca y Roja last month, and I read it just a few days ago, and it was… amazing. I definitely think it's her best work (though I have to say When the Moon was Ours is still my fave!) and it's gorgeous, as always.

    Great post!! ❤

    1. Oh no! That sucks! I haven’t seen any reviews for Wildcard yet but my expectations for it are high so now I’m a little nervous. Still I won’t know until I actually read it and I’m still kind of excited that it’s finally being released you know! Yes she’s always going to be a fave author of mine too. 🙂 ❤️
That’s brilliant to hear. I am so excited for Blanca & Roja and honestly hearing it’s her best work (let’s be honest, nothing can top When the Moon Was Ours can it?) is just making me so much more excited for that one. Why can’t it have been released already?! 🙂
      Thanks so much. ❤️

  8. Wildcard is on mine, and so is Kingdom of Ash. I can’t hype for Muse of Nightmares yet since I haven’t read Strange the Dreamer as I haven’t recieved my paperback copy of it yet!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yeah those two are going to epic, although Kingdom of Ash is going to require a lot of re-reading from me. 🙂 Oh I hope the wait for the paperback of Strange the Dreamer ends up being worth it. Plus this way you won’t have to live with the cliffhanger ending for too long because Muse of Nightmares is being released soon! 😀

  9. So much YASSSS! it’s funny we both have Lady Midnight on our lists this week but i am not surprised. I think you’re going to really enjoy The Raging Ones and can’t wait to ear your thoughts when you do get around to it. I have to read Warcross and came so close to listing it this week but I have so many others that overshadowed it this week, def would’ve been my 11th pick though haha! I have no excuse at this point not to have read Strange the Dreamer, I just love Laini so much that her books always leave me with the EPIC book hangover. A Harry potter re-read sounds lovely this time of year, shamefully I haven’t re-read them since the very 1st time I cracked the spine…Maybe it’ll feel like I’m reading them for the very first time. Plan to re-read them with my hubby soon. Anna-Marie McLemore is a MUST, I have a feeling we’re going to love Blanca & Roja *fingers crossed* 🙂

    Happy Reading! ❤ ❤ ❤

    1. Ha, yeah I feel like Cassandra Clare is always going to end up on one of these lists of mine, at least until I’ve caught up on her books. It was your review that made me add The Raging Ones to my TBR list, and because you loved it I know I will too. 🙂
Warcross is brilliant, I’m planning to re-read it tomorrow so I can start Wildcard in the right mood you know, and god you definitely have no excuses. Laini Taylor is my fave author and I know you’ll love Strange the Dreamer Lilly.
Oh that means you’re overdue for Harry Potter re-read (and there’s no better season than this one to get started on it) and yes Blanca and Roja is sure to be brilliant, it’s Anna-Marie McLemore so that’s a guarantee right?!
      Thanks, you too. 🙂 ❤️

  10. I’m very excited for the Raging Ones too, the premise is really exciting, and I’ve been itching to read some sci-fi. And I completely agree with you that Harry Potter is the perfect cosy fall read. I re-read at least one book once a year.

  11. I’m hoping to reread Lady Midnight and read Lord of Shadows soon, I think I’m going to save them for the next Tome Topple Readathon which is in November.

      1. Same here, that’s one of the reasons I waited so long to read it, especially because it wasn’t originally wasn’t coming out for two more years.

      1. Great idea! I actually just wrote my review of Wildcard and highly recommended rereading/recapping, because Wildcard is so fast-paced and twisty that not understanding the plot can be a serious impediment.

  12. I still haven’t read The Bear in the Nightingale so I definitely need to add it to my Fall TBR. Can’t believe I didn’t think of it until just now! 😮

And I’m thinking more and more that I’d love to do a HP re-read soon!
