A Postcard from Croatia

Ever since one of my friends went a few years back and posted some truly beautiful pictures Croatia has been high on my must-visit list. Still I didn’t expect to actually make it there myself for a few more years at least, but when my sister’s original plans fell through guess who got a free holiday.

Well, I had to pay for my flights and spending money of course, so I guess it was a mostly free trip.

We flew into Zadar, and spent the day there. Zadar reminded me of Venice, and when you consider how close Croatia is to Italy that probably isn’t much of a surprise (it certainly explained the amount of Italian restaurants we saw in Croatia). Our hotel was in the centre of Zadar’s Old Town so we spent most of our time exploring the streets, and later we wandered along the coast to the Sea Organ and the Monument to the Sun.

The next day we hired a driver to take us to Dubrovnik, and on the way stopped off at Krka National Park. The waterfall there is probably one of the main images people associate with Croatia, so it was a must on our trip. Me and my sister ended up taking the boat to the waterfalls on the Sunday, which according to our driver is the least busiest day to visit, but it was still packed. We swam in the water around the falls and took plenty of pictures. I also ended up falling in the water, so my beach wrap got drenched, not ideal but it was so beautiful there I couldn’t complain too much.

We arrived in Dubrovnik in time for the World Cup Final. Even though Croatia lost the match you wouldn’t have been able to tell; when we went out that evening car horns were honking, people were hanging out the windows waving flags and cheering. I even saw one guy sat on the hood of the taxi while it was driving, waving a flag around.

Dubrovnik is where they filmed Game of Thrones and the second I stepped into the Old Town I could almost see the shots from the TV series, walking through the streets was like walking back in time or walking through King’s Landing. We walked along the Walls of Dubrovnik, which looked out over the top of the city and out to the harbour, and in the evening to make the most of our last night we headed up in the cable car to see the sunset.

Advice (a.k.a. learn from my mistakes)

  • Just because it’s a city break don’t forget the suncream…This is something I forget every single time and I never ever learn. No surprise I got a little sunburnt walking the Walls of Dubrovnik.
  • Wear comfortable shoes…Dubrovnik is the city of hills (not its official name just what I’m calling it). I didn’t take trainers, just my sandals so by the end of the holiday my calves were in agony and I had blisters on the bottom of my feet. I was not prepared at all!
  • You don’t need publish transportation…Everything in Zadar and Dubrovnik is within easy walking distance. However be careful because in the winding streets of Dubrovnik’s Old Town it can be very easy to get lost wandering around.

A Postcard from Croatia (2)

While I’ve now been to Zadar, Krka National Park and Dubrovnik I know there’s a lot more the country has to offer, a lot more beauty to experience, so I will be going back again one day. Overall Croatia was a cheap holiday (which was very handy for me because it wasn’t a holiday I expected to be going on, and given how much money I’d already spent on Dubai and Mauritius I didn’t have a lot of spare cash lying around) so if you’re looking for a budget break there’s no better place (certainly no more beautiful place)!

  1. I miss seeing all those summery pictures and views since it started to get all foggy and cold where I live in California, so it was refreshing seeing all your pictures of Croatia! ☀️ I didn’t realize that Game of Thrones was filmed in Dubrovnik, but seeing how magical it looks there, I’m not surprised. I feel like so many places in Europe give off this fairy tale, medieval, whimsical vibe to them because of all the old buildings and the history intertwined with the places. I really hope that I can visit Dubrovnik in the future! Great post, Beth 😊

    1. Oh I know the feeling, the weather has turned where I live so it’s time to pull out the coats and gloves. I look at these pictures and remember how it felt to be warm. Yeah, I knew before I went but it was still strange seeing how similar it actually was. That’s what I love about Europe, all the history the different cities have. 🙂
I hope you manage to make it there as well, and thanks Zoie. ❤️

  2. Aw I’m so glad you had fun, Beth! You also are so lucky to have that sister of yours, it feels like she’s always traveling and taking you along ❤ That's lush! hahaha

Croatia looks absolutely breathtaking. I knew I knew that place from somewhere… Game of Thrones!! Must be amazing to be walking around in the same place where our favourite characters (and actors) have been, and recalling all the scenes… Aaaahhh so cool!!

I always enjoy your traveling posts and this one was no exception, hon ❤ Hope you recover from your sunburn though! Those are the devil 😡

    1. It was amazing, and yeah lucky too because Croatia is somewhere I’ve wanted to go for a while but somewhere I didn’t think I’d have the opportunity to go to for a while yet.
It’s even more beautiful in person for sure, and it was amazing walking those streets knowing the TV series was filmed there, there are so many similarities and you can see scenes from the show just walking around you know?
Thanks so much Sophie. 🙂 Ha, yeah I’m never burnt for long; I burn, peel, and then I end up even paler than I was before. 🙂 ❤️

  3. Ugh it’s gorgeous!!! That castle on the rock is stunning. And the rooftops ❤ Your pictures are absolutely lovely. And I didn't know some of GoT was filmed in Croatia! But I can definitely see it now. Croatia wasn't really on my list of places to visit but it definitely is now. So happy that you enjoyed your trip there. It looks like a fantastic trip! Can't wait to see where you travel next. I love these posts ❤

    1. It really is. Honestly I think it’s more beautiful than you can see in pictures. Yeah it’s kind of funny because I knew Game of Thrones was filmed in Dubrovnik but it was like I didn’t realise until I was there how similar it would be, I guess I figured there was more ‘movie magic’ than there actually was.
Oh it really was, and thanks so much Azia. 🙂 ❤️

      1. Sometimes pictures can’t do true beauty justice 😀 Movie magic is some strong stuff LOL. But it definitely would be cool to visit some filming locations. The realization would be slightly life-changing I’d imagine. And of course 💕

      2. Oh definitely, but there was very little needed in Croatia for sure. 🙂
I’d love to do a tour of some kind of the filming locations all over the world for Game of Thrones, or the film and book locations for Harry Potter. That would be incredible. 🙂 ❤️

  4. Great post Beth! 😀 This sounds like a wonderful vacation. I’m a tad bit jealous haha! When I saw you went to Dubrovnik, my first thought was Game of Thrones, I’m glad you got to explore and see the real sights in real life!
A little tip for you for your sore calves, which we learned when in Atlanta because that is a city of hills! If you put ice on your calves when they’re sore it helps a lot! 🙂 ❤️

    1. Thanks so much Meghan. Oh it was amazing, and I’m sure you’ll get to visit Croatia yourself one day, no need to be jealous. 🙂 It was so much fun, almost like walking through the streets of King’s Landing it’s kind of uncanny.
I’ll be sure to remember that. I do a lot of walking and I have another holiday this year which will probably include even more walking. Thanks for the tip. 🙂 ❤️

      1. Damn! I’m just trying to plan one trip right now, to the UK actually, and you’ll probably go on many trips before I get this one booked!
Also November is right around the corner so it’ll be here in no time! 🙂

      2. Ohh if you’re coming to the UK and need any recommendations, mainly for London because I know that city the best, let me know. I’m sure you’ll love it over here Meghan. 🙂
Yeah it’s actually a little strange how close November is at the moment. 😀

      3. Well I’m going to Leicester since that’s where my friend is staying, I’m planning to do day trips around the UK (as I’m used to travelling 2-3 hours to get somewhere for a day trip) but any recommendations for anywhere would be great! 😀
Right! Like we’re half way through September!!! 😯

    1. Random holidays are the best ones right?! Yeah it’s amazing over there isn’t it? I’d definitely say go again if you get a chance, especially if you’re not a student anymore and you’ll have the money to spend a second time around. 🙂
