August 2018 Recap

After going on three amazing holidays over the course of June and July, celebrating my birthday and taking part in Camp NaNo (even though I didn’t get too far) August felt very much like a ‘nothing’ month for me.

Still I managed to get through eleven books, and I’m still ahead on my Goodreads Reading Challenge, so August wasn’t a complete write off. I just had a lot of personal things going on and while it wasn’t all bad it kind of put a bummer on August as a whole.

August This Month

The Darkest Legacy

As long as I stay ahead of my Goodreads Reading Challenge I’m happy. I’ve worked out that in order to meet my goal of 125 books this year I need to read 9.75 books each month, and for me that’s an easy goal. Looking back there’s only been more than one month where I’ve read less than ten books.

August GR 2018 Reading Challenge

The best book I picked up in August was The Serpent’s Shadow. Again Rick Riordan has written an incredible series; I loved getting to know Carter and Sadie and loved learning more about Egyptian mythology. Granted I wasn’t a massive fan of the love triangle in the second book but I’m hoping we’ll see more of Carter and Sadie in one of Riordan’s other series one day.

The Serpent's Shadow

The worst book I picked up this month was The Darkest Minds. It wasn’t terrible, I ended up rating it four stars which just shows how good all the other books I picked up this month were if this was the worst, but it didn’t have the same emotional impact the other books in the series had, and even with the love triangle I can never not wholly love Rick Riordan’s writing.

The Darkest Minds

My WIP

There’s not much I can really report on when it comes to my WIP, I’m sticking to the plan I outlined last month and at the moment (to my everlasting surprise) it’s actually going OK.

There’s still a lot of work that needs to be done before the start of NaNoWriMo but at the moment I have a much better idea of where I want my WIP to go, and as of yet there haven’t been a hundred new plot ideas screaming for attention in my mind. Also I’ve found that using what I’ve come up with before, previous drafts, plot outlines, and character templates, as a starting point makes planning a lot easier.

Life in General

My friend and I went to so many flat viewings. It started off being very exciting, but quickly got tiring. Don’t get me wrong I want to be able to move out, and it’s fun viewing possible places we could one day live, but it’s a lot of effort and energy. So far we’ve seen eight places, and while a couple have come close none of them have been quite perfect yet.

I finally got down to the cinema to see Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again. There are some serious timeline inconsistencies, which I caught even not having seen the first film since it was released, but it’s such a fun, feel-good film you can’t help but leave the cinema smiling.

Mamma Mia Here We Go Again

During the August bank holiday I went with my dad to Kew Gardens. It’s a fair trek from where I live so it’s not something I get the opportunity to do every time I’m in London but it’s been ages since I last went and they recently re-opened the Temperate House so why not? Surprisingly my favourite part was actually the Princess of Wales Conservatory, not the Temperate House.

Monthly Recaps - Book Haul

I didn’t buy many books this month, but let’s just say I’m going to quality over quantity. Or let’s say I’m saving up for next month when so many pre-orders will be arriving on my doorstep.

August Recap (3)

Books

Monthly Recaps - Last Month

September is going to be all about new releases, and I can’t wait because some of my most anticipated reads of this year are finally coming out. There’s City of Ghosts and Vengeful, which I know are going to be incredible because they’re written by V.E. Schwab, and Wildcard, which I know I’ll love because after the ending to Warcross you can tell it’s going to be an epic story.

August Next Month (1)

I also have a couple of ARCs I need to get around to, both of which sound amazing so both of which I can’t wait to dive right into.

August Next Month (2)

I am going to be changing my posting schedule in September. Previously I’ve been posting on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and every other Friday, but going forwards I’ll be posting on Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday and every other Friday and/or Saturday. So one week I’ll post on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, and then the following week I’ll post on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

(It should be easier to understand than I’m making it seem when I actually start posting).

I hope everyone else had a good August, and I hope you all have an even better September as well.

Did anyone else have a book-buying slump this month, or do you end up with too many books every month? Has anyone else seen and loved Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again? Who else is really excited for releases like Vengeful and Wildcard, or is there another September release you can’t wait for? Let me know.

Happy reading!

  1. I just bought Wildcard and I’m so excited to read it! And yes I agree. The Darkest Minds is the weakest in the trilogy but I still absolutely love it! I’m glad you had a good month! Hoping this month goes the same!

  2. I can’t wait for Vengeful!!!! 😀 It’s going to be bloody awesome! And boy, August, at least the second-half, was incredibly stressful and heavy for me. Found it funny that it was pretty much a “nothing” month for you hahah I do hope September will prove to be far more enjoyable for you, Beth! Happy reading!

    1. Vengeful is going to be amazing! I feel like I’ve been waiting ages for it but you know it’s going to be brilliant so it’ll be worth the wait. Ha, yeah I almost feel like the rest of this year is going to be a “nothing” year but oh wells.
Thanks, I hope you have a great September Lashaan. 🙂 ❤

  3. What a great reading Month!!! So much Rick Riordan skdjfksjdfls!!!! I agree w you sm, is writing style is just so great.

And Mama Mia Here We Go Again!!!! I loved that film, not as much as the first one, but STILL SO CUTE. I was kind of disappointed with the plot (it was a bit boring) BUT THE MUSIC OH GOSH. I could just listen to the soundtrack for 800 hours. And Colin Firth is everything good in this world, so there was that too XD I really want to see Bohemian Rhapsody in the fall, Rami Malek is my #1 celebrity crush, and Queen is one of my favorites, so the universe really pulled through this time c:

And I just won Vicious in a giveaway, and you plan to read Vengeful!!! Now I’m even more excited since you like the series. ❤ I hope September goes amazing toooooo (and good luck w flat viewings, I never like packing and hauling furniture/stuff bc I'm so lazy, but touring places is SO MUCH FUN)

    1. Ha, yeah every so often I seem to binge read one of Rick Riordan’s series, next year it will be the Magnus Chase trilogy! 😀
I can’t remember much about the first one to be honest, but yeah it seemed like the plot of this one was Donna’s backstory, which was nice don’t get me wrong but it wasn’t as story-centric as the first. The songs were amazing! Yeah we saw the trailer for Bohemian Rhapsody, it does look amazing!
Oh that’s great. Yeah it’s by V.E. Schwab so it probably won’t be a massive surprise that it’s one of my favourite books, but I’m so so excited for Vengeful.
Thanks Malanie, I hope you have an amazing September too. 🙂 ❤

  4. Oh I love the Kane Chronicles, I’m so glad you ended up liking the books as well 😍 I also wasn’t a massive fan of the love triangle … especially as the characters are pretty young : o I’m also with you on Wildcard, I already placed my preorder and I cannot wait to finally read it!! But I’m also nervous because it’s the conclusion 😱

    1. Yeah the books were amazing, and it’s funny you said that because one of the reasons I didn’t rate this series five stars (and one of the things I wasn’t keen on either) was the love triangle.
Not long to go until it’s release right?! I’m pretty much counting down the days at this point. I really can’t wait. 😀

  5. I’m so glad you loved the Rick Riordan books you read in August, Beth! The Red Pyramid series isn’t near the top of my favorites list from him, but I still really loved it when I read it (long ago). And it’s so great that you’re 4 books ahead of schedule — I wish I could say I was there too but it’s more like 4 books BEHIND schedule 😂

And I’m glad to hear that you’re sticking to your plan for your WIP!! I know you’ve talked about straying away from your outline before so it’s great to hear that it’s not happening this time 😂 and ooh I’m really excited to see what you think of Broken Things and A Curse so Dark and Lovely!!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yeah while they weren’t as good as the Percy Jackson series I still really loved them, and it was interesting reading Rick Riordan’s take of Egyptian mythology too. Oh I’m sure you’ll be able to catch up May, we still have a good four months of the year left, that’s plenty of time right?! 🙂
Yeah I’m thinking if I outline more than I ever have before I should be better at actually sticking to it. It’s got to the stage where I need to finish a draft rather than keep changing it every time a new idea pops into my head.
Well so far I’m really enjoying Broken Things, and I can’t wait to get started on A Curse So Dark and Lonely next. 🙂

  6. I’m glad you had a good reading month, Beth! ❤ And yay, I'm so excited about so many September releases, especially Wildcard, I can't wait to see what happens next. And I am SO excited about you reading Broken Things, I can't wait to read it either. ❤
I'm glad you did well on outlining your WIP and hope you'll do great in NaNoWriMo just as well, that's exciting!
    I hope you'll have a wonderful September ❤

    1. Thanks so much Marie! 🙂 ❤ Yeah there are some beyond incredible September releases coming out, Wildcard I feel like I've been waiting forever for. Broken Things sounds amazing, I'm going to be starting it tomorrow and I can't wait to actually start reading it.
Thanks so much, and I hope you have an incredible September too. 🙂 ❤

  7. Oooh look at that awesome binge-reading streak! XD I tried reading The Red Pyramid ages ago, but it just didn’t live up to PJO to me, so I ended up not finishing it. 😦 I hope to read the series at some point in the future, though! And the Kew Gardens look so pretty, lovely. ♥ Have an awesome September!

    1. Ha, yeah when I binge read authors I really binge read. I loved Alexandra Bracken’s The Darkest Minds series and once I finished The Darkest Minds I couldn’t stop until the end of The Darkest Legacy. Oh that’s a shame, but I get what you mean because as much as I enjoyed the Carter Kane trilogy it wasn’t the same as the Percy Jackson series.
Kew Gardens is incredible, it’s such a beautiful place, and thanks so much. I hope you have an amazing September too. 🙂 ❤

  8. September seems to be the month for amazing releases! I’m yet to read Vicious haha but I’m happy to see you got The Girl in the Tower! Arden’s Winternight series is one of my favourites 🙂 Ooh those pictures of Kew Gardens looks very pretty. I would love to visit that someday!

    1. Yeah, definitely. Oh Vicious is amazing, if it’s on your TBR list I’d recommend starting it as soon as possible, and yeah I’m really loving the Winternight series as well. I’m sure The Girl in the Tower will be an incredible read.
Thanks so much, and it’s well worth a visit if you find yourself in London one day.

  9. AHHHH!??! Is it already time for Wildcard!??! I’m SO excited to read it!! I am curious if this is going to be a trilogy or just a duology!? I still have to read Vicious by VE Schwab!!
It is amazing that you’ve eleven books this month! That’s great to hear that you’ve enjoyed them overall. I noticed that the books are by Rick Riordan and Alexandra Bracken. Are these some of your favourite authors?
I tend to buy books when I feel the urge to read them (which works out because I read mostly ebooks and audiobooks) so my book buying slumps would coincide with my reading slumps lol.
Your pictures of the Kew Gardens look lovely 🙂 Wishing you a wonderful September ❤

    1. Yeah, I can’t believe it’s almost here but at the same time it still feels like too long to wait you now? I thought it was a duology but maybe I just think that because I couldn’t bear the wait if it was a trilogy. Oh you need to get around to Vicious soon Sophie, it’s amazing.
Yeah four and five star reads all in all so in my mind a very successful month. Well I do love both their books, so I guess they are favourite authors of mine.
I should probably try doing that, not only would it save me a bit of money but it would give me a chance to get through my backlog wouldn’t it?
Thanks so much Sophie, and I hope you have an incredible September too. 🙂 ❤

      1. You are right. I do feel like I’ve been waiting for Wildcard since forever haha, and now I can hardly believe that it’s almost here! I am excited for it and also looking forward to hearing your thoughts about this book!
I definitely want to read Vicious soon. I am in the mood for fantasy these days (ever since Six of Crows haha 🙂 )

      2. The kind of cliffhanger ending Warcross ended on can make any sequel seem an eternity away I suppose. Oh I feel like I can already tell I’m going to love it.
Well if you loved Six of Crows I feel like you’re guaranteed to love Vicious too. They both have a similar tone, although the stories aren’t that similar you know? 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      3. Absolutely! You’re right that Warcross ended on such a cliffhanger!! Im really excited to see how things play out.
That’s great to hear. I will definitely give Vicious a read then 🙂
