Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books to Pull You Out of a Reading Slump

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Books to Pull You Out of a Reading Slump.

I’m lucky enough that I don’t tend to slump when it comes to reading. I think because I’m a mood reader I always pick up what book I want to read, and if that means I don’t pick up a book then that’s what I do. However in the past I have had some pretty epic slumps, and when it happens I reach for one of two kinds of books; light-hearted and humorous stories with a shippable romance, and YA contemporaries.

Top Ten Tuesday #116

Geekerella by Ashley Poston

Granted I haven’t slumped since I first read Geekerella, so I haven’t been able to tell whether this book will pull me out of a reading slump, but it has everything I normally look for. Plus as well as being a YA contemporary it’s also a fairytale retelling, so added bonus.

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

This is one of those books that I have picked up and re-read time and time again. Whenever I’m not in the mood to read something new I’ll find myself reaching for Carry On for maybe the hundredth time. If this book can’t pull me out a slump then nothing can.

My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows

The constant back-and-forth between Jane and G had me laughing out loud on my daily commute to work as I was reading. As a lot of what I read is tension-filled and action-packed fantasy sometimes I need a story like My Lady Jane just as a change of pace.

The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson

When it comes to YA contemporary Morgan Matson is one of the best authors, all of her books make for perfect summer holiday reading, but they’re also great for pulling me out of reading slumps. An added bonus is that The Unexpected Everything has plenty of cute dogs too.

P.S. I Like You by Kasie West

This was the first Kasie West Book I picked up and it remains my favourite. The mystery behind who Lily’s pen pal/love interest was was one I guessed early on, but the main reason I pick up West’s books is for the fluffy and cute romance which P.S. I Like You had in spades.

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzie Lee

The adventure, the ‘road trip’ across Europe, the shippable romance between Monty and Percy, the humour. The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue had it all. It’s an all-time favourite of mine and I feel like Carry On it will be a book I re-read more times than I can count.

Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

Like with P.S. I Like You I guessed the identity of Blue pretty early on, but it didn’t spoil my enjoyment of this book at all. Simon Vs is one of my ultimate feel-good reads, and I don’t think I could ever get bored of reading Simon and Blue’s story.

Just Listen by Sarah Dessen

Sarah Dessen is one of my favourite YA contemporary authors. Just Listen was the first book of hers I picked up back when I was in high school discovering the YA genre and it’s still my favourite. This is a book full of nostalgia for me, and it never fails to remind me what it is I love about reading.

Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson

Another book by Morgan Matson because I couldn’t resist. Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour is my tied number one favourite of Matson’s releases and what had me adding it to my list this week is the road trip aspect. It never fails to make me want to travel to the US for a road trip of my own.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

Similarly to Just Listen what had me adding this book to my list this week is the nostalgia of it. If re-reading Just Listen reminds me what it is I love about reading then picking up Daughter of Smoke and Bone again reminds me what it is I love about the fantasy genre. It’s a story full of magic that never fails to enchant me.

So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what books reach for when you’re in the middle of a reading slump? Is there a specific genre you reach for, or do you just find not reading works well as a change of pace?

  1. Simon vs. is such a feel good book! I guessed Blue early on as well but it just makes me smile so much. I really need to reread Just Listen because it was such a nice book!

  2. The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue!! Yes!! Truly a love story for the ages. 💖
Also, I’m so mad at myself for not having read My Lady Jane yet—I’ve seen it floating around my feed and it’s been in my TBR for *forever*. Based on all of the reviews I read, the banter between the characters sounds entertaining (I’m such a sucker for witty dialogue, omg) not to mention the entire premise is so fascinating! I mean, it as a little weird when I first realized that the main love interest was a horse (or had some horse-like characteristics??) It’s just super fun to read about fantasy elements in a historical setting inspired by real events 😀

Also, DoSAB was one of the first books I truly got into in the YA fantasy genre, which is why I’ll probably always adore and revere it with every inch of my heart <33

    1. Definitely. 🙂 I’m going to have to re-read it when The Lady’s Guide comes out and already I can’t wait. My Lady Jane is amazing, it’s kind of the same genre as The Gentleman’s Guide (humorous historical fiction) so if you loved The Gentleman’s Guide you’re guaranteed to love My Lady Jane too. Ha, yeah the love interest is a character who turns into a horse at night (think werewolf but instead of just being affected by the full moon he’s affected by any moon). It’s a bit weird, but that could describe the whole book and it works.
Yeah, I’ve read a lot of fantasy but no matter what I’m always going to love DoSAB a little different to all my other favourites! 🙂 ❤️

  3. Hello Beth ❤ It's great to have a list of go-to books when we are in a reading slump! I agree with a lot of the books on your list, including Carry On, Simon Vs and Amy & Roger. I love these books because they have remarkable character dynamics and a great sense of humour, and in general very easy to read! I think I was able to each of these three books in a very short time 🙂
The Unexpected Everything is on my TBR and I want to reread Amy & Roger some time soon!

    1. Hi Sophie, and yeah when it comes to slumps these are my top ten but honestly I feel like anything light-heart and YA contemporary-ish would do the job just as well. Like you said it’s books that have a great sense of humour and that are easy to read that you need when there’s nothing else you want to read.
Oh I hope you love The Unexpected Everything, and yes I want to do a re-read of that book as well. I feel like it would be the perfect book to kick start a holiday you know? 🙂

  4. OH Beth this is such a fantastic list and I LOVE seeing these sweet contemporaries featured, too. Whenever I am feeling in a slump, contemporaries are always the way to go for me and Morgan Matson’s books are like magic, I love them so, very much! ❤ So happy you featured two of her books, I think all of her books could have fit there hahaha 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Marie. 🙂 ❤️ Yeah I feel like when I’m in the middle of a slump there’s nothing better than a sweet contemporary, for me it’s likely because they’re such different stories to the fantasy books I normally read.
I guess it’s no surprise looking at this list that Morgan Matson is one of my favourite YA contemporary authors then is it? 😀 ❤️

    1. Yeah it was the book that introduced me to the YA contemporary genre, and Sarah Dessen and it’s always going to be a favourite of mine. 🙂
See I’m not that into Booktube, but I saw loads of bloggers on WordPress talking about GGVV and Carry On in the run up to each of their releases and I knew I had to read them too, and I’m so so glad I did!
Thanks so much Malanie, and yeah writing this gave me feelings as well. 🙂 ❤️

      1. YES oh my gosh! It was so cute! And I’m a real sci fi geek so watching Ellie fall in love with Damien – another sci fi geek, was adorable! Who was your favourite character?
