Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books to Pull You Out of a Reading Slump

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Books to Pull You Out of a Reading Slump.

I’m lucky enough that I don’t tend to slump when it comes to reading. I think because I’m a mood reader I always pick up what book I want to read, and if that means I don’t pick up a book then that’s what I do. However in the past I have had some pretty epic slumps, and when it happens I reach for one of two kinds of books; light-hearted and humorous stories with a shippable romance, and YA contemporaries.

Geekerella by Ashley Poston

Granted I haven’t slumped since I first read Geekerella, so I haven’t been able to tell whether this book will pull me out of a reading slump, but it has everything I normally look for. Plus as well as being a YA contemporary it’s also a fairytale retelling, so added bonus.

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

This is one of those books that I have picked up and re-read time and time again. Whenever I’m not in the mood to read something new I’ll find myself reaching for Carry On for maybe the hundredth time. If this book can’t pull me out a slump then nothing can.

My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows

The constant back-and-forth between Jane and G had me laughing out loud on my daily commute to work as I was reading. As a lot of what I read is tension-filled and action-packed fantasy sometimes I need a story like My Lady Jane just as a change of pace.

The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson

When it comes to YA contemporary Morgan Matson is one of the best authors, all of her books make for perfect summer holiday reading, but they’re also great for pulling me out of reading slumps. An added bonus is that The Unexpected Everything has plenty of cute dogs too.

P.S. I Like You by Kasie West

This was the first Kasie West Book I picked up and it remains my favourite. The mystery behind who Lily’s pen pal/love interest was was one I guessed early on, but the main reason I pick up West’s books is for the fluffy and cute romance which P.S. I Like You had in spades.

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzie Lee

The adventure, the ‘road trip’ across Europe, the shippable romance between Monty and Percy, the humour. The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue had it all. It’s an all-time favourite of mine and I feel like Carry On it will be a book I re-read more times than I can count.

Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

Like with P.S. I Like You I guessed the identity of Blue pretty early on, but it didn’t spoil my enjoyment of this book at all. Simon Vs is one of my ultimate feel-good reads, and I don’t think I could ever get bored of reading Simon and Blue’s story.

Just Listen by Sarah Dessen

Sarah Dessen is one of my favourite YA contemporary authors. Just Listen was the first book of hers I picked up back when I was in high school discovering the YA genre and it’s still my favourite. This is a book full of nostalgia for me, and it never fails to remind me what it is I love about reading.

Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson

Another book by Morgan Matson because I couldn’t resist. Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour is my tied number one favourite of Matson’s releases and what had me adding it to my list this week is the road trip aspect. It never fails to make me want to travel to the US for a road trip of my own.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

Similarly to Just Listen what had me adding this book to my list this week is the nostalgia of it. If re-reading Just Listen reminds me what it is I love about reading then picking up Daughter of Smoke and Bone again reminds me what it is I love about the fantasy genre. It’s a story full of magic that never fails to enchant me.
