Romance Fails in Fiction Tag

Everyone loves a little romance and I’m no exception. One of my favourite things about reading is coming across a fluffy romance between two characters I can root for from the beginning. I love romance, as long as it’s well written. I was tagged by Meghan at Meghan’s Whimsical Explorations and Reviews. Thanks so much for the tag Meghan, I had a lot of fun with this one so I hope you enjoy reading my answers just as much.

Romance Fails in Fiction Tag

Rules:

  • Please pingback Kate at Melting Pots and Other Calamities. Please pingback a specific post, so that she’ll get notification.
  • You can choose ten romance fails from any media you like: books, movies, anime, manga, T.V shows, or Webtoons. You can even mix them up if you want.
  • You can choose funny fails or serious ones; for the serious ones, please phrase it humorously. Remember, this is a fun tag! It’s not meant to be serious.
  • Mention who’s who in the fails. (e.g. who fails and who is the recipient of the failure). If there isn’t a recipient, per se, just state the couple (or non-couple).
  • Optional: Rank the failures from least extreme to most extreme.
  • Five failures at least.
  • Tag as many people as you want, but at least one person.

Snow, Bale, Jagger, and Kai
Stealing Snow by Danielle Paige…

…Because I’m not even a fan of love triangles and this book had a love square. I can’t even say who’d I’d prefer Snow to end up with because I don’t think she had chemistry with any of the male love interests.

Clary and Jace
City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare…

…Because in the second book they think they’re siblings and no…just no!

Granted by the end of the third book, which is as far into The Mortal Instruments series as I’ve gotten, I loved seeing Clary and Jace together again.

City of Ashes

Nina and Matthias
Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo…

…Because they deserved a happy ending! I was rooting for them from the very start and I’m still heartbroken by how their story finished.

Crooked Kingdom

Nathan and Gabriel
Half Lost by Sally Green…

…Because, like Nina and Matthias, Nathan and Gabriel deserved a happy ending. How could Sally Green end Half Lost like that? How?

half-lost

Rose and Scorpius
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by J.K. Rowling…

…Because everyone knows it’s supposed to be Albus and Scorpius who end up together, not Rose and Scorpius.

My tags:

What is one of your romantic fails in fiction? Would any of the couple I picked make your list as well or were you a fan of the Snow/Bale/Jagger/Kai love square in Stealing Snow? Do you think Nathan and Gabriel deserved better, or do you prefer how the trilogy left their situation? Are you a fan of Scorpius and Albus or Scorpius and Rose? Let me know, and if there’s anyone out there who wants to take part consider yourself tagged.

  2. I enjoyed reading your answers for tag. They managed to make me laugh even though I haven’t read all of these books (yet!) I agree that sibling romances are just not for me (even if they turn out to not be siblings!) and it is always a downer when a couple we like don’t end up together!

    1. Thanks Sophie, and oh that’s good to hear. I had a lot of fun writing this so I’m glad that kind of came through in my answers. You can’t get past the siblings thing, even when that turns out not to be the case I think if I discovered someone out there was my brother suddenly, and then found out a few months later that was’t the case I’d never be able to look at them romantically.

  3. OHh this is a fun tag for sure – I got so scared for a second when I saw Nina and Matthias, I was glad when I read the actual reason for it haha. They deserved their happy ending for sure, just thinking about it now makes me so sad 😦
Thank you so much for tagging me, Beth! 😀

    1. A lot of fun, and yeah as much as I love Nina and Matthias and the Six of Crows duology I had to include them on this list because they deserved better! (Don’t worry, no other reason, I’m still heartbroken over their ending).
That’s all right, I’ll be looking forwards to seeing your answers for this tag for sure! 🙂 ❤️

  4. Thank you so much for tagging me! This seems like a super fun tag and I loved your answers! Totally agree with City of Ashes, tho!
I was debating wether or not to read Stealing Snow but after you saying that it has a love square… I’m not really sure I want to?😅

    1. That’s all right and it is a lot of fun. Thanks, I’ll definitely be looking forwards to seeing your answers for this one as well then. 🙂
Yeah the whole‘we thought we were related’ thing isn’t something you can come back from. Stealing Snow is not a book I’d recommend at all, and not just because of the love square.

  5. omg I’m so excited to do this taggg!!!!! AND YES, THE CLARY AND JACE SHIP THAT SHOULDN’T HAVE HAPPENED!!! it was so hard for me to get over the idea that they were siblings, because I went into the series not knowing any better?? so I just assumed they were definitely siblings and their relationship was weird af. sadddlly I never really shipped them.
And then!!! THE END OF CROOKED KINGDOM!! It’s been 6 months since I finished that book and I’m still not okay. Because Matthias!!!! I honestly see no logical reason why what happened to him was necessary plot-wise or for character-development.The author legitimately just wanted us to emotionally devastated.

    1. Yay, I’m really excited to see your answers for this one then. 😀 Yeah I think there was no reason to make them siblings, and the series would have been soooo much better if that was never a major plot point right?! It’s hard to come back from something like that and ship two characters even if it doesn’t end up being true.
It doesn’t get any better after years. I read Crooked Kingdom when it was released and I’m still not over it (I likely never will be either!)

    1. Ha, no that’s just my header image for all my tags (I loved the romantic relationships in that book). 🙂
In my mind that’s where the story should have gone, and if we’d gotten more books I think Albus and Scorpius would’ve end up together (no one can tell me otherwise!)

  6. Yay! I’m glad you had fun with this! 😀 Haha yeah Clary and Jace went through quite a bit in their relationship. That whole sibling thing was a little weird, I kinda wish Claire hadn’t of taken it there, but whatever.
I also agree with you on Albus and Scorpius! Those two were made for each other! 😀
Great answers to this tag Beth! 😀

    1. It was a great tag (thanks again for tagging me). Yeah I’m never going to be able to ship them in the first three books even knowing how it ends for them you know? Exactly, it didn’t add anything having the two think they were related only to reveal they never were.
I really wish Albus and Scorpius had been endgame in The Cursed Child, like it was meant to be wasn’t it?
      Thanks so much. 🙂 ❤️

      1. Oh you’re very welcome! 😀 I know exactly how you feel! Right! It just made the viewer want to ship them even less!
It really did feel like Albus and Scorpius would have been together in the end, unfortunately we didn’t get the ending we wanted :\
