Books to Read in Pairs

The first time I saw this tag I got a little confused because I thought it was “Books to Read in Paris“. Not that I wouldn’t recommend any of these books for reading in Paris, but it would have been a very different tag if I hadn’t quickly realised it was pairs instead. I was tagged by Nicole at Sorry I’m Booked. Thanks so much for the tag Nicole, I had a lot of fun with this one so I hope you enjoy reading my answers just as much.

Bone Gap by Laura Ruby and The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

The more I think about this pairing, the more I realise how well these two books actually go together. Both fit into the magical realism genre, both are partly set in fantasy worlds that seem to sit parallel to our own, both deal in myths and legends, and both have incredible characters you can’t help but fall in love with.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber and A Crown of Wishes by Roshani Chokshi

You’d think I’d pair Caraval with The Night Circus, and yes while those two books would work well in a pair I think Caraval fits better with A Crown of Wishes. Gauri and Vikram, and Scarlett and Julian find themselves playing a game that is so much more than just a game, it’s a chance to win a prize which could mean everything they desire.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and The Game of Love and Death by Martha Brockenbrough

The Book Thief is one of my all-time favourite books, incredibly well-written and emotionally moving, so the fact that I’m pairing it with anything at all means The Game of Love and Death is a stand-out book for me. Both stories are set during dark times in history, and each of the main characters have their stories told by forces so much more than themselves.

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon and The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

The Bone Season and The Darkest Minds are two of my favourite series. The Bone Season tells the story of Paige, a clairvoyant both feared and despised, in London who is captured and taken away from her family. The Darkest Minds tells Ruby’s story, a child rounded up and taken to a camp away from her family for fears of the powers she has.

Gilded Cage by Vic James and Red Rising by Pierce Brown

While on the surface these books are quite different, they’re not even part of the same genre what with Gilded Cage being a dystopian story and Red Rising being a sci-fi one, both have their similarities. Both show a cruel form of slavery in a new world, and both show the brutality of the people in power; be they James’ Equals or Brown’s Golds.
