Books to Read in Pairs

The first time I saw this tag I got a little confused because I thought it was “Books to Read in Paris“. Not that I wouldn’t recommend any of these books for reading in Paris, but it would have been a very different tag if I hadn’t quickly realised it was pairs instead. I was tagged by Nicole at Sorry I’m Booked. Thanks so much for the tag Nicole, I had a lot of fun with this one so I hope you enjoy reading my answers just as much.

Books to Read in Pairs

Bone Gap by Laura Ruby and The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

The more I think about this pairing, the more I realise how well these two books actually go together. Both fit into the magical realism genre, both are partly set in fantasy worlds that seem to sit parallel to our own, both deal in myths and legends, and both have incredible characters you can’t help but fall in love with.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber and A Crown of Wishes by Roshani Chokshi

You’d think I’d pair Caraval with The Night Circus, and yes while those two books would work well in a pair I think Caraval fits better with A Crown of Wishes. Gauri and Vikram, and Scarlett and Julian find themselves playing a game that is so much more than just a game, it’s a chance to win a prize which could mean everything they desire.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and The Game of Love and Death by Martha Brockenbrough

The Book Thief is one of my all-time favourite books, incredibly well-written and emotionally moving, so the fact that I’m pairing it with anything at all means The Game of Love and Death is a stand-out book for me. Both stories are set during dark times in history, and each of the main characters have their stories told by forces so much more than themselves.

The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon and The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

The Bone Season and The Darkest Minds are two of my favourite series. The Bone Season tells the story of Paige, a clairvoyant both feared and despised, in London who is captured and taken away from her family. The Darkest Minds tells Ruby’s story, a child rounded up and taken to a camp away from her family for fears of the powers she has.

Books to Read in Pairs (4)

Gilded Cage by Vic James and Red Rising by Pierce Brown

While on the surface these books are quite different, they’re not even part of the same genre what with Gilded Cage being a dystopian story and Red Rising being a sci-fi one, both have their similarities. Both show a cruel form of slavery in a new world, and both show the brutality of the people in power; be they James’ Equals or Brown’s Golds.

Are any of these books you’ve read, if so what other books would you pair them with? Or have you read one of the books I’ve paired and are you now tempted to pick up the other one? What’s your favourite book, and what would you pair it with? Let me know, and if there’s anyone out there who wants to take part consider yourself tagged.

  1. Oh I loved this! I’m planning on picking up The Raven Boys very soon! And I didn’t realize it was magical realism and I adore that genre.

I’ll definitely be adding The Game of Love and Death to my TBR! Never even heard of it before!

    1. Thanks so much, yeah I think The Raven Boys is a mixture of fantasy/magical realism. When I first read it I thought just fantasy/paranormal but looking back there’s definitely a touch of magical realism in the story I think.
That’s an amazing book, I don’t normally read historical fiction but The Game of Love and Death is a standout favourite of mine now! 😀

  2. Thank you so much for tagging me! I’m excited to try this tag out 😊 I bought the Star-Touched Queen series by Roshani Chokshi a while back, and honestly I forgot about it because of newer releases… but seeing that I LOVED Caraval, you’ve made me interested in picking Chokshi’s book up again! Oh, dear… my TBR’s getting chaotic again 😂

    1. That’s all right, and I’m already looking forwards to seeing your answers in that case. 🙂 Oh that’s great to hear (that you’re tempted to pick the series up again I mean). If you enjoyed Caraval I feel you’re guaranteed to love The Star-Touched Queen series (I actually enjoyed it a little more than Caraval if I’m being honest).
Ehh, I’ve given up trying to control my TBR list, I say embrace the chaos! 😀 ❤

  3. Not going to lie, for one moment I thought this said “Books to read in Paris” xD (Maybe that’s me missing Paris) I really love the concept of this post! I’ll definitely have to checkout The Game of Love and Death, as I really loved the Book Thief 🙂

    1. It seems to be a common mistake, which makes me feel better about making it in the first place! 😀 And I get what you mean because just talking about Paris in the comments is making me miss the city too!
Oh that’s great to hear, I really enjoyed The Game of Love and Death and it’s not my usual genre or anything so I hope you love it too Caro. 🙂

  4. Oh my god, I also read “Books to read in PARIS” instead of pairs, at first 😂 glad I’m not alone 😂
I love your choices here, Beth, and agree that Bone Gap and The Raven Boys would make such an excellent pairing, with the atmosphere they both have, it would be amazing 😀

    1. The two words are just so similar to each other that it seems it’s an easy mistake to make. 😀
Thanks so much. Yeah I feel like it’s a guarantee that if you love one you’ll love the other (after all I’ve read and loved both) and given a fair few people have read The Raven Boys maybe it’ll convince them to pick up Bone Gap too! 🙂 ❤️

there are so many books here I’m adding to my tbr!!!!!! Especially Bone Gap,,,anything connected to raven boys deserves my love and attention 😭 I think it’s 100% necessary to pair The Captive Prince and Foxhole Court, because reading one revives u from a book hangover from the other 💞I love this post as alwaysssss

    1. Thanks so much Malanie. 🙂 ❤️ Oh I hope you love Bone Gap, it was the first magical realism book I picked up and it’s still one of my favourites to this day, it’s such a beautiful story.
I’ve got to say while I haven’t read either of those I’ve seen so many people hyping both those series so I feel like I’d pair them too. Either way they’re both series on my TBR list. 😀
      Thanks. 🙂 ❤️

    1. That’s all right, and yeah the two words just look too similar that it’s an easy mistake to make. Then again I’d recommend these books to read in Paris too, so it could almost be the same post whether I used pairs or Paris! 😀
Thanks so much Meghan, and oh if you decide to read the others I hope you enjoy them. 🙂 ❤️
