Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Popular Books that Lived Up to the Hype

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Popular Books that Lived Up to the Hype.

There are so many hyped up books out there, and sometimes when it comes to hype I can be my own worst enemy. I build up certain releases in my head so much and while, nine times out of ten, they’re even more amazing than I think they will be, there are some books which unfortunately end up disappointing me. But this week’s theme isn’t about those disappointing books, it’s about the amazing ones.

Top Ten Tuesday #114

The Bear and The Nightingale by Katherine Arden

It took me a long time to get around to this book, and in that time everyone was telling me how amazing it was. I don’t think I’ve seen a mixed or negative review for The Bear and The Nightingale yet, and after reading it myself I can tell why. It’s an incredibly magical story, and I can’t wait to pick up the next book in the trilogy.

They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera

I really enjoyed both of Adam Silvera’s previous releases, although History is All You Left Me did nearly put me in a reading slump, so I was really excited for the release of They Both Die at the End. It ended up becoming my favourite of Silvera’s books so far, so if you haven’t read this one yet pick it up as soon as you get the chance.

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

When I was a teenager Holly Black’s Modern Faerie Tales series was a favourite of mine; hearing that she was releasing a new series about the fae meant I couldn’t wait to get my hands on The Cruel Prince. It was certainly a darker story than Tithe was, but I was hooked from the beginning and my god that ending was intense.

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

Everyone seemed to be really excited for the release of The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, but it was only after it was out when the positive reviews started being posted that I was swept away by the hype. This book was amazing, and in the running for my favourite read of 2017, and now I am definitely firmly on the hype bandwagon for The Ladies Guide to Petticoats and Piracy.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

After the release of The Hate U Give it was hard to scroll through WordPress without seeing a post mentioning this book. I picked it up because of the amazing things I was hearing but I still ended up being completely blown away by the story. Honestly there aren’t enough words to properly describe how incredible I found The Hate U Give.

Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare

In order to read The Dark Artifices series I decided to do a re-read of Clare’s previous Shadowhunter books, and once I started the main thing I was hearing from literally everyone was how amazing The Infernal Devices trilogy was. It seems to be everyone’s favourite and at the moment, bearing in mind I still have a fair few more Shadowhunter books to get though, it’s mine as well.

A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab

This is a release I largely hyped up myself. After the insane cliffhanger ending to A Gathering of Shadows I can’t even begin to describe how much I needed this book in my life, and every day until it’s release I was building it up higher and higher in my head. Luckily V.E. Schwab didn’t let me down (could she ever?) and A Conjuring of Light ended up being my favourite read of 2017.

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor

Laini Taylor has been one of my favourite authors ever since I picked up her Daughter of Smoke and Bone series and fell in love with her writing. I knew Strange the Dreamer was going to be amazing just because of who the author was. This book was a long time coming and it took me a while to get into the story, but it was worth it in the end because this was such a beautiful and magical read.

Iron Gold by Pierce Brown

The Red Rising Saga is one of my all-time favourite sci-fi series. I am on the edge of my seat reading these books as Pierce Brown puts his characters through hell over and over again. I was beyond thrilled to discover Morning Star wasn’t going to be last we saw of Darrow though a little apprehensive about having three new POVs to get used to.

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Like The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue Illuminae was a book I only picked up because of all the positive reviews I was seeing. Reading Illuminae was like nothing I’d ever experienced before and I was hooked from the start not only on the story but the format the story was told in. For the release of both Gemina and Obsidio I was much more swept away by the hype.

So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what books live up to the hype for you? Did any of the books I featured make your list, or were these hyped up releases that ended up disappointing you?

  1. Great list, Beth ❤️

There are so many great hyped books on this list that I still haven’t gotten round to reading yet. Strange The Dreamer & A Conjuring of Light is really high on my TBR and I really want to read both of those books really soon! I’ve stay both The Bear and The Nightingale and THUG, but I didn’t finish either.

I still really want to finish both those books, I just think that I wasn’t in the right mood at the time. They Both Died At The End was amazing and I’m so happy I read it, it definitely lived up to the hype ❤️

    1. Thanks so much Michelle! 🙂 ❤️
Oh both Strange the Dreamer and. A Conjuring of Light are amazing. I had high hopes but the books themselves actually ended up exceeding them, and given how high my hopes were that’s saying something.
I feel like especially with The Bear and the Nightingale you need to be in the right mood for it (I nearly wasn’t so it took me a little while to get through it that’s for sure!) Yeah TBDATE is my favourite by Adam Silvera to date, but maybe his next release will beat it! 🙂

  2. I don’t entirely agree with Illuminae, in my opinion the first book didn’t entirely live up to the hype. It was a lot of infodump, and only got good at the end of the book. The rest of the series was AMAZING though 😍

  3. Hello Beth ❤
I agree with your choices here! You've named some of my favourite series including ADSOM and Illuminae 🙂 I have heard so many great things about The Bear and the Nightingale. It is definitely a book I should read soon!

    1. Hey, and yeah I couldn’t not include Illuminae (when it’s my favourite sci-fi series) and ADSOM (when it’s probably my favourite series full stop!)
I can probably say every great thing you’ve heard about The Bear and the Nightingale is true, I’m sure it will be a book you love as much as I did! 🙂

  4. From this list I’ve read Illuminae, The Cruel Prince, They Both Die At The End, and Strange the Dreamer. I loved all of them. Some more than others. The Cruel Prince and Strange the Dreamer were good. Illuminae was great. They Both Die At The End broke me and I love it so much. Favorite read of 2018 for sure.

    1. They Both Die at the End is my favourite Adam Silvera book so far, and one of my favourite reads of last year (when I read it) as well. I loved Illuminae and I kind of get what you mean about Strange the Dreamer. I really enjoyed it but I preferred Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor.

      1. I have still yet to read Daughter of Smoke and Bone but I’m really intrigued by it. I just want to get it eventually. Strange the Dreamer was good. It was just slow in the beginning and it took a while for me to finish it. But I really hope the next book is good. And I also read Clockwork Angel which was good but Clockwork Prince was way better. I still need to read Clockwork Princess.

      2. Oh I’d highly recommend it, like I said I loved it even more than Strange the Dreamer. Yeah I get what you mean, as much as I loved that book it did take me a little while to get into the story and everything.
In my opinion Clockwork Princess is the best of the lot, so hopefully you’ll feel the same way! 😀

    1. Oh I’m glad you enjoyed it, it’s such a fun read right? And I can’t wait for The Ladies Guide to be released now. 🙂 I hope you love Iron Gold as well, it’s different to the Red Rising series (a few more narrators to get used to) but it’s just as fast-paced, deadly and epic, and I really can’t wait for the next book to be released in that series either! 😀

  5. I liked Gentlemen’s Guide to Vice and Virtue way more than I expected to! Illuminae was such a slow start for me I almost DNFed it… and then I reached the 100 page mark and was mind blown. 😛 I loved the remainder of the series and cannot wait for The Andromeda Cycle!

    1. Same here actually. It was one of those books that everyone seemed to be really excited for but I was never swept away by the hype. I’m glad Illuminae eventually managed to hook you, imagine if you had given up in it, what you would have missed! 🙂

  6. Oh, I am SO happy about The Cruel Prince living up to the hype! I bought it in July and I’m super scared to read it because I feel like there’s an equal chance of me loving or hating it? And I really don’t want to hate it! I’m not even sure if it’s the type of fantasy I like so I’m just keeping my fingers crossed. 🤞

And aahh, Illuminae 100% lived up to the hype for me as well! (Can’t say the same thing about Gemina and Obsidio though haha.) It was so fast-paced and addicting and I hadn’t expected it to be as good as it was. 💛

    1. It’s a great read May, but I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed you end up on the loving it side of things. 😀 I think when it comes to fae books there’s no author better than Holly Black, but yeah there’s so much hype surrounding The Cruel Prince (and the sequel as well at this point).
Illuminae is just amazing, and OK it’s a shame about Gemina and Obsidio but you still enjoyed both those books right? 🙂

  7. Great choices, Beth! ❤ I agree with you about THUG, ACOL and Illuminae – all of these books were really hyped and I was so nervous to read them but ultimately, I am so happy that I did, I loved them so much ❤ ❤ I haven't read Strange The Dreamer just yet, but I'm curious to try it out someday and see if it lives up to the hype for me… hopefully it will 😀

    1. Thanks so much Marie! 🙂 ❤ I feel like given how much I love her work it would be weird if I didn't include ACOL on my list this week, and yes I had no other choice but to include THUG either. That's more of a phenomenon than a book at this point! 😀
I'll keep my fingers crossed you love Strange the Dreamer as much as I did (so a lot!) but I get what you mean because there are books I'm nervous to pick up because of the hype surrounding them. I suppose on the bright side this weeks topic is proof there are some books out there that live up to the mammoth expectations people have for them! 😀 ❤

  8. There are so many great books on this list. Illuminae, A Conjuring of Light, Strange the Dreamer, definite favourites. 😍 And the end of The Cruel Prince, man that was amazingly intense.
I’m glad They Both Die at the End and The Hate U Give are on here because I’m planning on reading those at some point soon. 😁 Great top 10!

    1. Thanks so much Ashley! 😀 Illuminae is the best sci-fi book I’ve read so far, and I feel like I had to include Strange the Dreamer and A Conjuring of Light given who they’re written by. Definitely intense, and oh I am so beyond excited for The Wicked King now.
They’re both as amazing as the rest of the books on this list, I’ve yet to see a mixed review for THUG as well. I hope you love them as much as I did, and thanks so much. 🙂 ❤

      1. Illuminae is great sci-fi, it’s just so much fun. And yes, Strange the Dreamer and A Conjuring of Light just simply had to be included. 😊 I’m so excited to get my hands on The Wicked King too. I’m very jealous of all those people getting ARCs already.
Yes, I think everyone who reads THUG just falls in love. I’m sure I will too.

  9. On the books I read (like The Hate U Give, A Conjuring of Light, Iron Gold ..) I TOTALLY agree! I am still a bit intimidated by the hype of some of the others, but I will keep this in mind haha knowing they were worth it for you.

    Liked by 2 people

    1. THUG is on so many people’s lists this week it seems. And both ACOL and Iron Gold are books I feel like I had no other choice but to love! 😀
Yeah hype can be intimidating, but honestly these books are worth it. Either way I’ll keep my fingers crossed you love them as much as I did Kat! 🙂 ❤

    1. I think Laini Taylor is going to be one of those authors who I’m always going to love, and Illuminae is in a league of its own!
Well obviously these are all favourites of mine so I’d highly recommend them all if you’re interested in picking any of them up. 😀

    1. I think with hyped books because of the hype I have to read them the second they’re released and I have them in my hands. 😀
Definitely better, and oh that’s a shame about Strange the Dreamer but I’m sure you’ll love THUG. I’ve yet to see a mixed review for that book! 🙂

  10. I totally agree with Illuminae, I enjoyed it so much, so I have no real excuse for not having the rest of the series yet, but I’m planning on doing that in the not so distant future.

      1. I’m pretty sure the next book I’m going to but is Gemina because I have to be able to flip through it while listening to the audiobook.

      2. I usually try to read books physically because I usually have a hard time finding things to do when listening to a audiobook.

        Liked by 1 person

      3. I usually play games on my Ipad or I’m just laying on my bed, sometimes I listen to my audiobooks while I’m working on my blog post.

      4. Other than doing those things, I really have a hard time finding something to occupy so more times than not I’m just laying their listening.

        Liked by 1 person

    1. Oh really? That’s kind of funny because so far every list I’ve seen has included THUG. I feel like it’s a book more people would include than not because yeah it’s a brilliant novel.
Ha, Cassandra Clare has released so many books I guess for some people the challenge may have been which one of hers to include! 😀

      1. I suppose with the amount of people who take part in the TTT posts you’re going to get a fair bit of variety aren’t you?
So far I’ve only read the first three TMI books and TID series. TID books are incredible so I’d highly recommend those ones. 🙂

  11. How could I even forget Red Rising?!?! ahhhh! haha! Yes to all of these although I really should carry on with the Darker Shade of Magic books, only read the first one.Glad to see the Bear and the Nightingale make your list! I almost added Adam but I couldn’t decide on which of his books so I left him out lol smh. Great picks Beth! 🙂

    1. Oh we couldn’t include every hyped up book in our lists could we (don’t worry, there’s probably one or two I’ve forgotten too)? Iron Gold was one of the books I think I hyped myself up for more than anything but it was amazing! 😀
Yes, definitely definitely carry on that series as soon as possible, and The Bear and the Nightingale was the first book I picked for this weeks topic simply because of all the many amazing things I was hearing.
For me when it comes to Adam Silvera (at the moment at least) TBDATE is always going to be number one! 😀 Thanks so much. 🙂 ❤

  12. Illuminae, strange the dreamer, the cruel prince definitely lived up to the hype for me as well!! I’ve yet to read Iron gold ( which I can’t wait to read it!! I lOVED the red rising trilogy😍😍) and the nightingale 😍

    Liked by 2 people

    1. They’re just amazing right? And actually they’re probably three of the most hyped up books I’ve come across, so they had a lot to live up to when I finally read them. Iron Gold is great, and basically The Bear and the Nightingale had so much to live up to but it lived up to it all. I hope you love both. 🙂

      Liked by 1 person

    1. Oh that’s a shame about THUG, but I guess sometimes hype can work both ways and we end up let down by books we hope we’ll love. Hopefully you were still able to enjoy it somewhat even if it didn’t reach your expectations. Oh Illuminae was just incredible. I haven’t read a book quite like it either before or since!
      Thanks so much. 🙂
