Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books I Plan to Re-Read this Year

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Books I Decided to DNF too Quickly.

I mentioned this in a previous Top Ten Tuesday post I took part in; I rarely DNF books, and I certainly haven’t DNF-ed enough of them to come up with ten for this week’s theme. Instead for this week I decided to go in the opposite direction, and instead of talking about the books I hated enough to DNF I’m talking about the books I loved enough to re-read.

Top Ten Tuesday #108

Ever since I re-read His Dark Materials at the beginning of this year I’ve realised how much I love re-reading my old favourites, books I may have forgotten but which have been favourites of mine through the many years I’ve been reading. So this year I’m going on a bit of a re-reading kick, and I’m hoping to pick up some of the standalones and finished series I love before the end of 2018.

Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

I’ve seen reviews from Sophie and The Orangutan Librarian who have been re-reading the Harry Potter books, and they’ve made me want to drop everything and pick up the first book right away. It’s been so long since I read this series, and it’s such a nostalgic one for me I just had to include it on my list this week.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

This is a book I try and re-read at least once a year. The Night Circus is my favourite standalone book (as hard as it is to choose just one), and no  matter how many times I pick it up it remains just as magical, just as incredible, just as brilliant as it was the very first time I read it.

Shades of Magic by V.E. Schwab

For anyone who knows me seeing the Shades of Magic trilogy on my list won’t be a surprise. Ever since A Conjuring of Light was released and the trilogy complete I’ve been mean to re-read the series from start to finish so this will be the year I finally get around to it.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

It’s been so long since the first time I first read The Book Thief, but this really has been one of those books that has stayed with me that long. Granted it emotionally destroyed me (god that ending) but I’m now prepared to go through that all over again. I think anyways.

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

The last time I re-read this series was way back in 2015 before Winter was released. Now three years have passed and The Lunar Chronicles is finally complete I want to go back and experience it all again; re-reading from the beginning to the end, from Cinder to Wires and Nerve: Gone Rogue.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Crooked Kingdom was my best read of 2016, and of all of Leigh Bardugo’s books this duology is my favourite. I remember being so shocked by some of the twists that were thrown my way, and I think even though I’ll see them coming this time around I’ll still love both books just as much.

The Elemental Trilogy by Sherry Thomas

This series was actually recommended to me by a friend, the same one who rarely recommends books, so I knew it would be good and it ended up being amazing. All three books are currently sitting on my shelves, and it’s been so long since I last picked them up I figured it’s about time I got around to re-reading them.

The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

With Zu’s story continuing in The Darkest Legacy July and the movie being released in August (how amazing does the trailer look by the way) I really need to re-read the original trilogy before both come out. Right now, I can barely remember anything about the plot or the characters.

When the Moon Was Ours by Anna-Marie McLemore

Normally I don’t re-read magical realism books. I feel like it’s a genre you don’t need to re-read because the stories stay with you for such a long time, but When the Moon Was Ours is my all-time favourite magical realism book and I want to experience it all over again through re-reading it.

The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson

Honestly, I’ll probably end up re-reading I’ll Give You the Sun and The Sky is Everywhere this year. Jandy Nelson is one of my favourite YA contemporary authors and for some reason both these books strike me as good pool reads, so I’ll be taking them (on my Kindle) on holiday with me in June.

  1. I’m so glad to see a few of my favorites on this list! I definitely plan on rereading Six of Crows & Crooked Kingdom this year — I think I’m making it a yearly thing to reread it each December! It’s one of those books you can’t help but return to over and over again, and still fall in love with a little more each time. ❤ And aahh When the Moon Was Ours! I really want to reread that one as well, especially since I don't remember much from it, besides the fact that it's absolutely GORGEOUS!

    1. Oh yeah a lot of these are my favourites so I need to get around to them again soon.
      Ohh, that’s what I’m doing with The Night Circus, making re-reading it a yearly thing. I definitely agree with you on that about Six of Crows, I already know when I pick it up again I’m going to love it as much as the first time I read it. I can remember the basic plot information but not more than that when it comes to When the Moon Was Ours, basically that means it’s time to pick it up again. 🙂

  2. I love your list so, so much, Beth! I too rarely re-read books, but I really should – I think there is comfort in falling in love again with old favorites or something, I love it 🙂
    I’m so happy to see Cinder on this list, as well as Jandy Nelson’s books – these are books I’d re-read as well and…. I NEED to read The Night Circus someday, haha 😀 ❤

    1. Thanks so much Marie. ❤ I've been re-reading a lot more this year than I ever have before and it's been great. It's surprising how much you forget old books you love, and it is really comforting going back to those familiar stories as well.
      I've been meaning to re-read Jandy Nelson for ages now, and yes The Night Circus is a must! 😀

  3. Ooh this is such a wonderful list!! Thank you for linking to my post as well! I do think HP is always worth rereading 😀 And Night Circus is so atmospheric and great to revisit. Really agree about the Shades trilogy as well. And book thief is such a magnificent book- I actually bought a copy to reread, but haven’t done so for ages too. And I absolutely love Six of Crows too- I’d love to reread them- I think I’d enjoy them even more!

    1. Thanks so much, and that’s all right! 😀 Yeah when it comes to re-reads HP is always going to be at the top of my list, along with The Night Circus because I could never get tired of the magic and the story.
      I haven’t re-read The Book Thief since I brought it either, but I think this year is the year!

  5. I would love to reread The Lunar Chronicles–it’s such a great series, so well done and creative and so much fun. I’d also love to reread the SoC duology, but I was thinking of getting them on audiobook because I heard such great things about it.

  6. It’s admirable that you haven’t DNF’d all that many books! I haven’t really either. I can’t name 10 books I’ve DNFd just yet. I’m being a lot more careful with the books I pick up now that I DNF’d maybe three books last year. None this year so that’s good! And you’ve got some fantastic books here. I support a reread of The Night Circus (of course) and Six of Crows (why wouldn’t you want to reread this masterpiece). And now that I’ve read Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, I’d definitely agree that it’s the kind of book that garners a reread lol. Several rereads actually. And I’m never surprised to see ADSOM on your lists 😉

    1. I guess I feel like no matter how bad a book is I always hold out the hope that it’ll get better. Plus I think I’ve started it I may as well finish, it would feel a bit like a waste to give up halfway through either.
      Ha, yeah these are ultimate favourite of mine, I re-read The Night Circus last year so definitely want to get around to it this year as well. People should never be surprised to see ADSOM on any of my lists I think! 😀

  8. OH MY GOSH A HARRY POTTER REREAD!!!
    I’m still working on my first read through c:
    when I was smol I was obsessed with Roald Dahl and I barely read anything else, so i’m only just now getting to experience these boookkkkk!!!
    AND HARRY AND RON AND HERMIONE ARE SO PRECIOUS.
    I finished Goblet of Fire and I need to proceed. After I climb out of this deadly mountain of ARCs I’ve found my self in XD
    also I still don’t fully understand the INTRICATE plot of SoC,,,I need a reread so I can try to understand kaz who is actually a genius who I love

    1. Oh when you’ve finished your first read I’m sure you’ll want to do a re-read of the series! 😀 And yes I loved Roald Dahl as well when I was little, I can’t remember my favourite by him but I did like The Twits.
      Same here, I feel like going back and re-reading both Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom will just make me appreciate the plot and the writing more. 🙂

  16. Great picks! I’m always up for a Harry Potter reread, those books are just as good as the first time. Fred and George always crack me up.
    I’d love to reread ADSOM and Six of Crows at some point. It feels like ages since I read them and I loved them both immensely. Eventually I’ll read Winter and finally finish The Lunar Chronicles – I definitely get why everyone loves them so much, for sure worth a reread.

      I get what you mean, I also feel like it’s longer than I realise when I think back to when I actually picked up ADSOM or Sox of Crows last time you know? The Lunar Chronicles is amazing right?! And there are so many books it will keep me busy for a while that’s for sure! 😀

  21. Oh my gosh, you’re like the first person I’ve seen to talk about The Elementals Trilogy. I read it last summer and absolutely loved it; I think it needs more attention!
    I’m not a huge re-reader in general, but I randomly picked up The Night Circus for a second time last summer and fell in love all over again. It’s the only book I’ve ever re-read, although I do plan on trying to do it more, with The Book Thief and Six of Crows at the top of the list!

    1. It really does. It’s such an incredible series and definitely a favourite of mine. Ever since I finished the trilogy I’ve been wanting to re-read it! 🙂
      I feel like The Night Circus is one of those books you can pick up again and again and love it every single time. For me it’s the same with The Book Thief which is so beautiful though heartbreaking as well. 🙂

    I loved the Night Circus the first time through (which was several years back) and I keep hearing about it again and again now that I’ve started blogging. It is definitely on my re-read list as well!
    I’ve heard so many good things about I’ll Give You the Sun and Six of Crows, which I’ll have to read sometime soon 🙂

      The Night Circus is one of those books I’m always going to want to read, it’s just so beautifully written. Oh definitely do, both are amazing and I’m sure they’re books you’ll love Sophie! 😀 ❤️

  23. I know I’ll definitely be re-reading Harry Potter again, just I don’t know when. The thought crosses my mind a lot. I’ve recently started something that I’m calling the Stephen King Project, where I’m going to attempt to read all of his books by taking it a chapter a week. It is a life-long commitment I know, currently I’m re-reading Carrie, and loving it. I’ve been thinking about blogging about it, but I don’t know how exciting others would think of it, ha!

    1. It’s been on my re-read list for a while now, it’s finding the time to get around to it but I know what you mean because recently I’ve felt like there’s more pushing me towards those books.
      Wow that does seem like a lot, but it sounds like fun as well because it’s not just you taking part but others as well. I suppose taking it chapter by chapter means you appreciate the story more too as well. 😀

  24. I tried to listen to The Night Circus and couldn’t get into it! Maybe reading would be better.
