The New Disney Princess Tag

Funnily enough my favourite Disney films don’t even have princess in them (The Fox and the Hound and Alice in Wonderland in case anyone was curious). When it comes to my favourite Disney princess through it’s a hard choice between Belle and Rapunzel. I was tagged by Eva at Brilliantly Bookish, and Sophie at Blame Chocolate. Thanks both so much for the tag, I had a lot of fun with this one so I hope you enjoy reading my answers just as much.

Favourite debut book from an author

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

I talk about this series a lot so it probably isn’t going to come as much of a surprise to see Daughter of Smoke and Bone as my answer for this question. There aren’t enough words to properly express my love for this book, and that fact that it was the first one Laini Taylor ever wrote just made it all the more incredible. As good as Strange the Dreamer was it couldn’t beat this series.

Just like Cinderella, you either didn’t expect much out of this character in the beginning but they turned out to be a total gem

Ziri
Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor

When we were first introduced to Ziri I didn’t expect much from his character. He avoided interacting with Karou, too scared of Thiago to risk going against him, but as the story continued and throughout the third book he became a true friend and supporter, willing to go above and beyond if it meant helping Karou.

I will try and pick some series other than the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy for the rest of this tag, I promise.

A book that makes you sleepy or just could not hold your attention

Any book that can’t hold my attention all the way though I’ll end up DNF-ing and putting back onto my to-read list. However there are books that I had a hard time getting into, either because they were magical realism stories or had really heavy world building, but once I got past the beginning and into the story they ended up being five star reads for me.

The Book of Dust: La Belle Sauvage by Philip Pullman

When the river breaks the banks of the Thames and London floods Malcolm and Alice flee in his canoe with baby Lyra. Most of the book follows them as they try to reach Oxford university, and later Lord Asriel, where Lyra will be safe. Not only do they have to stay one step ahead of the man chasing them, but outsmart the old magic awoken by the flood.

Liesel
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

Maybe she’s not the first character that will come to your mind when you think ‘bookworm’ but you can’t deny Liesel is a book lover. Even before she knows how to read she steals a book, intrigued by it, and as she learns what the words say the more she wants more despite the dangers books mean for her in the middle of World War II.

Name a book with an unlikely love story (either in terms of the romance or a book you didn’t expect to love so much)

Defy the Stars by Claudia Gray

This answers both parts of the question. I picked up Defy the Stars on a whim and didn’t have any expectations for it, but was completely blown away. Plus the romance between Noemi and Abel is very unlikely, not only are they fighting on opposite sides of a war when they first meet but one of them is human and the other is a mech.

My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows

Granted this isn’t an accurate account of Jane Grey’s life – it has a lot more magic and humour than I believe her life had, especially considering how she died – but I read a lot of YA fantasy and contemporary releases so there’s no other answer for this question I’m afraid.

Red Rising Saga by Pierce Brown

What I love the most about Mustang is that she doesn’t just feel like a side character in Darrow’s story; instead she has her own  journey to go on, her own things driving her that she’s fighting for. She’s intelligent, kick-ass, and refuses to be intimidated by Darrow or anyone else.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

In my opinion I don’t think there’s an author who’s written a multiple POV book better than Leigh Bardugo has with Six of Crows. All six of her main characters have different ethnicities, different religions, different diversities, but they’re all incredibly developed and great characters.

Since I started blogging, way back in November 2015, the longest book I’ve read is Winter by Marissa Meyer. However looking back even further to before I started blogging the longest book I think I must have ever read is A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin. The edition I own is over 1200 pages which so far means it’s the longest book of the series.

Vasya doesn’t want a love story. The Bear and the Nightingale is all about her journey growing up in the wilds of Russia; running around the woods, talking to the house spirits no one else can see. She has a very independent spirit that a man would just end up breaking.

Obsidio by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

(I was originally going to use The Bear and the Nightingale to answer this question, but then I used it for the one before and didn’t want to feature the same book twice in a row).

In the third book of The Illuminae Files series we go back to Kerenza, a planet so cold that people die from exposure. It’s something Rhys is warned about when he first steps foot on the planet; if his gear isn’t secured correctly the cold will kill him very very quickly.
