Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books on my Spring TBR List

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Books on my Spring TBR List.

I’ve never really been good at sticking to TBR lists. All you need to do is look at some of the monthly ones I’ve set in the past to see how bad I am at sticking to them. The ten books on my list this week are books I want to read (but as a mood reader that could change at any given time) and that I hope to get around to soon, but whether I do or not is anyone’s guess.

Top Ten Tuesday #98

Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi

Everyone is talking about this book. It’s one of my most anticipated releases of this year and based on what’s been said about it so far I know I’m going to love it, so why haven’t I started it yet? Well this is the book that I think is going to be in the Fairy Loot March box so my copy is still a few days away from being in my hands.

Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zelie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.

But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were targeted and killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.

Now, Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers—and her growing feelings for the enemy.

City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare

Continuing with my aim to catch up on Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunters books before the release of the last book in The Dark Artifices series I have the second half of The Mortal Instruments series on my to-read list for spring. I’ve really enjoyed what I’ve read so far, and while I don’t know if the next three books can beat The Infernal Devices trilogy I can’t wait to get started on them.

The Mortal Instruments Part Two

To love is to destroy…

The Mortal War is over, and Clary Fray is home in New York, excited about all the possibilities before her. She’s training to become a Shadowhunter and – most importantly of all – she can finally call Jace her boyfriend. But her happiness has come at a price…

Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller

There have been some glowing reviews for this book, and from the sounds of the blurb Daughter of the Pirate King is going to be a story I love. Also given that the second book in the series has recently been released if I do enjoy this one I can immediately jump into the second book in the series.

Sent on a mission to retrieve an ancient hidden map – the key to a legendary treasure trove – seventeen-year-old pirate captain Alosa deliberately allows herself to be captured by her enemies, giving her the perfect opportunity to search their ship.

More than a match for the ruthless pirate crew, Alosa has only one thing standing between her and the map: her captor, the unexpectedly clever and unfairly attractive first mate, Riden. But not to worry, for Alosa has a few tricks up her sleeve, and no lone pirate can stop the Daughter of the Pirate King.

Spellslinger by Sebastien de Castell

I’m not sure what drew me to this book, it was likely a mixture of the cover and the fact that the blurb brought to mind one of my all-time favourite series, but I really want to try and pick it up soon. The third book in the series is being released in May so I have the first and second book in the series on my TBR list for spring.

TTT Sebastien de Castell

Magic is a con game.

Kellen is moments away from facing his first mage’s duel and the start of four trials that will make him a spellcaster. There’s just one problem: his magic is gone. As his sixteenth birthday approaches, Kellen falls back on his cunning in a bid to avoid total disgrace. But when a daring stranger arrives in town, she challenges Kellen to take a different path. Ferius Parfax is one of the mysterious Argosi—a traveller who lives by her wits and the three decks of cards she carries. She’s difficult and unpredictable, but she may be Kellen’s only hope…

Listen to Your Heart by Kasie West

Spring and summer (when the weather starts getting warmer and the evenings lighter) I pick up all the YA contemporary books on my to-read list. Kasie West is one of my favourite authors when it comes to light hearted and fluffy stories, and it’s not just her new release I have to look forwards to but a couple of others from last year I didn’t manage to get around to in 2017.

TTT Kasie West

Talking to other people isn’t Kate Bailey’s favourite activity. She’d much rather be out on the lake, soaking up the solitude and sunshine. So when her best friend, Alana, convinces Kate to join their high school’s podcast, Kate is not expecting to be chosen as the host. Now she’ll have to answer calls and give advice on the air? Impossible.

But to Kate’s surprise, she turns out to be pretty good at the hosting gig. Then the podcast gets in a call from an anonymous guy, asking for advice about his unnamed crush. Kate is pretty sure that the caller is gorgeous Diego Martinez, and even surer that the girl in question is Alana. Kate is excited for her friend…until Kate herself starts to develop feelings for Diego. Suddenly, Kate finds that while doling out wisdom to others may be easy, asking for help is tougher than it looks, and following your own advice is even harder.

Kasie West’s adorable story of secrets, love, and friendship is sure to win over hearts everywhere.

Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli

It took me a long time to get around to The Upside of Unrequited after it was released. I can guarantee it won’t take me as long to get around to Leah on the Offbeat when it’s out.

When it comes to drumming, Leah Burke is usually on beat—but real life isn’t always so rhythmic.

She’s an anomaly in her friend group: the only child of a young, single mom, and her life is decidedly less privileged. She loves to draw but is too self-conscious to show it. And even though her mom knows she’s bisexual, she hasn’t mustered the courage to tell her friends—not even her openly gay BFF, Simon.

So Leah really doesn’t know what to do when her rock-solid friend group starts to fracture in unexpected ways. With prom and college on the horizon, tensions are running high.

It’s hard for Leah to strike the right note while the people she loves are fighting—especially when she realizes she might love one of them more than she ever intended.

The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan

So far every year since I picked up Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief back in 2016 I’ve read one of Rick Riordan’s series, and this year it’s going to be the Kane Chronicles. I’ve not read a book that focuses on Egyptian mythology before, but this is a trilogy by Rick Riordan so I know it’s going to be good.

TTT Rick Riordan

“I guess it started the night our Dad blew up the British Museum…”

Carter and Sadie Kane’s dad is brilliant Egyptologist with a secret plan that goes horribly wrong. An explosion shatters the ancient Rosetta Stone and unleashes Set, the evil god of chaos…

Set imprisons Dr Kane is a golden coffin, and Carter and Sadie are forced to run for their lives. To save their dad, they must embark on a terrifying quest from Cairo and Paris to the American South-west and discover the truth about their family’s connection to the House of Life: an Egyptian temple of magic that has existed for thousands of years.

The pharaohs of ancient Egypt are far from dead and buried. And so, unfortunately are their gods…

The Diabolic by S.J. Kincaid

The Diabolic is a book that’s been on and off my TBR list as I’ve debated whether I would read it or not. At the moment it’s firmly on my ‘I will read this book soon’ list so fingers crossed it stays there because I have heard good things about the series.

Nemesis is a Diabolic. Created to protect a galactic Senator’s daughter, Sidonia. The girl who has grown up by her side and who is as much as sister as a master. There’s no one Nemesis wouldn’t kill to keep her safe. But when the power-mad Emperor summons Sidonia to the galactic court as a hostage, there is only one way for Nemesis to protect Sidonia.

She must become her.

Now one of the galaxy’s most dangerous weapons is masquerading in a world of corruption and Nemesis has to hide her true abilities or risk everything. As the Empire begins to fracture and rebellion looms closer, Nemesis learns that there is something stronger than her deadly force: the one thing she’s been told she doesn’t have—humanity. And, amidst all the danger, action and intrigue, her humanity might be the only thing that can save her, Sidonia and the entire Empire…

Ringer by Lauren Oliver

Honestly I’m not sure why I haven’t gotten around to this one before now, but it will be one of my priorities for spring. I really enjoyed Replica, it was the first book by Lauren Oliver I picked up but it definitely won’t be the last, and I’ve heard some good things about Ringer so I can’t wait to get started.

Like its ambitious companion novel, Replica, this far-reaching novel by powerhouse bestselling author Lauren Oliver digs deep into questions of how to be a human being in a world where humanity cannot be taken for granted.

In the world outside the Haven Institute, Lyra and Caelum are finding it hard to be human—and neither of them knows where they belong or who they can trust. When Caelum leaves without warning to pursue the dream of a place he belongs, Lyra follows him, convinced that together they will hunt down a cure for the illness that’s slowly consuming her mind. But what they uncover is a shocking connection to their past—even as their future seems in danger of collapsing.

After discovering the uncomfortable truth about her connection to the Haven Institute, Gemma struggles to return to her normal life. But when she learns that her controlling and powerful father has new plans for Lyra and Caelum, Gemma and her boyfriend, Pete, leave in the middle of the night to warn them of the danger they face. When an untimely accident derails them, they are mistaken for the escaped replicas and seized by strangers hired to capture them. The Haven Institute wasn’t destroyed after all, and now Gemma is the one behind the walls.

Lyra’s and Gemma’s stories can be read separately – with either story first – or in alternating chapters, but no matter which way you turn the book, the two distinct stories combine into one breathtaking experience for both heroines and readers alike.

A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J. Maas

I think I’m going to have to rename May ‘Maas Month’. Not only is A Court of Frost and Starlight being released, and I know that’s a book I’m going to start the second I have it in my hands, but I’m hoping to get around to The Assassin’s Blade and Tower of Dawn that month as well.

TTT Sarah J Maas

Narrated by Feyre and Rhysand, this story bridges the events in A Court of Wings and Ruin and the upcoming spinoff novels.

Feyre, Rhys, and their close-knit circle of friends are still busy rebuilding the Night Court and the vastly-changed world beyond. But Winter Solstice is finally near, and with it, a hard-earned reprieve. Yet even the festive atmosphere can’t keep the shadows of the past from looming. As Feyre navigates her first Winter Solstice as High Lady, she finds that those dearest to her have more wounds than she anticipated—scars that will have far-reaching impact on the future of their Court.

So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what books you have on your spring TBR list. Do we have any in common, and how excited are you for the upcoming books being released this spring.

  1. Very cool tbr! Hope you enjoy the rest of of the mortal instruments series. And Kasie West is great for fluffy romances. Ringer was great- hope you like it! And I enjoyed Assassin’s Blade and Tower of Dawn much more than I expected and I’m looking forward to A Court of Frost and Starlight.

    1. I’ve heard good things about the books so fingers crossed, and yeah Kasie West is my go-to author for YA contemporary releases. Thanks, that’s another one I’ve heard good things about, same with The Assassin’s Blade and Tower of Dawn (so I’m hoping both will be better than my expectations). 🙂

    1. Ohh, I’ll definitely check out your review at some point then, I haven’t actually seen any reviews for Spellslinger so I’m curious what people have thought about it.
The Diabolic is next on my to-read list actually, and yeah I know all too well about the heated debates when it comes to books! 😀

  2. Nothing can beat the Infernal Devices. Those were beautifully crafted books! But I do like Lady Midnight quite a lot. Never got around to finishing Lord of Shadows … I should probably do that sometime soon-ish.
Ooooh, those Spellsinger books look gorgeous!!! Now I kind of want to read them too hahaha
    Great Spring TBR!! 😀

    1. At the moment based on what I’ve read TID is my favourite of Clare’s series, and I don’t think the remainder of TMI can quite top it. I’ve heard good things about Lord of Shadows, but apparently the cliffhanger ending is painful, fair warning. 🙂
Yeah it was the cover that first caught my eye, and the blurb making it sound like my kind of book convinced me to give it a go.
      Thanks Kat! 😀 ❤

  3. Great list Beth! I’m hoping to pick up Leah On The Offbeat and Children of Blood and Bone during spring too, to they made my TTT list for this week! I actually have COBAB sitting in my bad right now, just waiting to be started. I’m curious about Spellslinger too, but I read the first couple of pages in a shop and there was a fat-shaming joke that didn’t sit well with me. So I’m not sure about it, but I might still give it a go. I’ve also not finished TMI yet -I still have the final book to read, but it’s been years since I finished the series so I’ve lost a fair bit of motivation to read it. 😛

    1. Thanks so much Kate! 😀 Yeah those two seem to be on a lot of people’s TBR lists and most anticipated lists as well (and honestly I’m not surprised because they both seem like they’re going to be incredible).
Oh that sucks about Spellslinger (I guess at least now I’m aware of it so I can prepare for it you know), I’m still hoping it will be a good read.
Well hopefully if you do ever decide to pick up that last book you won’t need to re-read the whole series all over again (that’s what I’ve been doing and it’s long I can tell you that for sure!) 😀

      1. Yeah, it’s a shame about Spellslinger, but I really hope that that type of language and mindset will be challenged later in the book. I doubt I’d read the full TMI series again (there are too many other books I want to get to) I’d probably just watch some recap videos and read the final book so I can get on to Lady Midnight. 🙂

      2. Well fingers crossed. If it is I’ll let you know so maybe you can pick up those books as well knowing they’re not that bad later on. 🙂
Recaps work just as well, I’ve done that for a couple of books where I haven’t had the time to re-read the whole series all over again.

    1. Oh same here. The second I have that release in my hands I’m going to be starting it I can say that for sure! 😀
I really hope you love Six of Crows and Cruel Prince, and yes definitely agree with you on Legendary. I’m counting down the days until that book is released! 🙂 ❤

    1. These are the books I’m hoping to get through this spring, but I honestly don’t know if I’m going to get even halfway through these picks. Ohh, so you’ll be able to binge read her books right? I’ve been doing that accidentally by not picking up any of her releases the second they’re out so I guess I’ll get to binge read them too.
Thanks so much, and thanks for the link. 🙂

  4. Ahhh I can’t wait for you to read Ringer, Beth, I hope that you will enjoy it – I thought it was a really great book, but… you know me, I’m such a huge fan of Lauren Oliver’s work 😛
I also heard amazing things about COBAB – who hasn’t, by this point? I feel like it’s the most talked about book of the year haha. I can’t wait to hear what you think of it 😀 x

    1. Ha, yeah I know how much you love Lauren Oliver. I feel like that’s part of the reason I picked up Replica in the first place. I hope I’ll enjoy it, I haven’t heard much about Ringer but what I have heard has been good.
Oh it seems like everyone is either excited for or loving COBAB, here’s hoping that hype is real right?
      Thanks Marie. 🙂 ❤

  5. I’ve actually finished TMI a few weeks ago, so good luck and I hope you love them!
I really enjoyed Children of Blood and Bone. It was such an amazing debut and I cannot wait to read more about that world💕.

  6. Yassss to the shadowhunters books! I CONSUMED TMI and TID in the weeks before the Shadowhunters tv show first premiered. I loved TID but they destroyed me, so I refuse to read them again within the next decade. TMI I’ve been re-reading–I finished book 2 again a few months ago, so I’m hoping to continue re-reading this year. Lady Midnight was excellent, but I still need to read Lord of Shadows, especially since book 3 in that trilogy is coming out later this year.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yeah catching up is a priority of mine. I’m hoping to be completely caught up by the time Queen of Air and Darkness is released. 🙂 Oh TID destroyed me too, I won’t be rereading that series for a while I can tell you that, but oh I really enjoyed the TV show too.
There’s no way I’m picking up Lady Midnight and Lord of Shadows until the last book has been released. I’ve heard so much about how insane those cliffhangers are! 😀

    1. Honestly I’m bad at sticking to seasonal lists too, I don’t think I’ll get through even half of these books before spring is over but I’m going to give it a go. Yeah Leah on the Offbeat is a high priority of mine when it’s released, same as Love Simon when it’s out in the UK! 😀
      Thanks so much. 🙂

  7. Daughter of the Pirate King was so much fun! I’m excited to read the sequel soon. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Children of Blood and Bone! Enjoy all your reads 🤗

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yeah, I think technically The Upside of Unrequited was a sequel (it was set in the same world and Simon made a cameo) but Leah on the Offbeat features the same characters.
It’s going to be amazing! 😀
      Thanks for the link.

  8. Hello Beth!
I didn’t realize Leah on the Offbeat was going to be released so soon!! I am loving Becky Albertalli’s books so far, and I can’t wait for this one 🙂 Hope you enjoy these spring reads!

    1. Yeah, it’s one of those books I’ve pretty much been counting down the days until it’s released. Becky Albertalli is one of my favourite authors so Leah on the Offbeat is a really anticipated release of mine.
Thanks Sophie, I hope you enjoy everything on your spring TBR list too. 😀

  9. Awesome list, Beth! The Diabolic and The Children of Blood and Bone are two series I’d definitely love to give a shot at some point myself. They sound so wildly amazing! Hope you enjoy all of the ones you end up reading! 😉

      1. Just realised it’s not out yet!!! 😦 What’s your favourite book by her? So I can read that one while waiting for Listen to Your Heart to come out!

      2. Oh really? This is why I’ve lost track of her releases, I’m not even sure which ones are out and which ones aren’t yet.
My favourite is definitely P.S. I Like You so I’d highly recommend that one! 😀

    1. Thanks, I haven’t heard much about it but I’ve never read a book with Egyptian mythology before so I’m excited for that part at the very least. It sounds really good, again haven’t heard much about it but fingers crossed.
Children of Blood and Bone is bound to be epic! 😀

    1. Hopefully with Tower of Dawn it will be a case of second time’s the charm right? I’m just not motivated to read it at the moment so I keep putting it off but I’ll get around to it soon I’m sure.
Oh that’s great to hear about Children of Blood and Bone, I hope you continue to enjoy it all. Thanks, and thanks for the link as well. 🙂
