February 2018 Recap

(Let’s all pretend I’m posting this recap at the end of February rather than the beginning of March).

It’s cliché I know, I even started my first recap of the year with this, but where has the month gone?! February is the shortest month of the year and this year I could really tell because I’m struggling to think of what I did with myself over the last twenty-eight days. It was a bit of a mixed month for me, but overall there was more good than bad.

February This Month

Again (as of the end of February at least) I’m on track to complete my Goodreads Reading Challenge of 125 by the end of the year. However I’m thinking of lowering it. I don’t know if I can reach my goal and the thought of falling behind is giving me low-key anxiety issues. I’d rather lower my challenge to an amount I know I can read but still try to 125 books.

February GR 2018 Reading Challenge

The best book I picked up in February was really hard to narrow down. Last month I bemoaned how long it took me to finally have a five star read but this month there were a couple of outstanding and incredible books I got through. I think I’m going to have to go for Daughter of Smoke and Bone. This was a re-read for me but it was just as magical and enchanting the second time around as the first.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone

The worst book I picked up this month was again another really hard choice because all the books I picked up were good. Tales from Sand and Sea was good, don’t get me wrong, but as a collection of short stories from the Rebel of the Sands trilogy I didn’t really have any expectations for it and all in all it was kind of forgettable compared to the other books I picked up.

My WIP

To everyone out there who knows how much of an epic procrastinator I am it’s probably going to come as no surprise when I say I’m still a little behind compared to where I wanted to be on my WIP. My original plan was to start writing in March but currently I am only halfway into my plan/research stages (it was the naming of my characters which has thrown me off schedule).

Now my plan is to finish my plot outline, finish naming all my characters (God help me), and finish expanding my world before starting the actual re-write of my WIP in April. Just in time for Camp NaNoWriMo (do you see what I did there).

Life in General

I splurged and had afternoon tea with my best friend in London. We’d waited months for a table for Cutter & Squidge’s Genie’s Cave Afternoon Tea to open up, but let me tell you it was well worth the wait. The food was incredible and we are definitely going back there again, they do different themes every few months and come summer there’s going to be something new.

February Recap (2)

I also made it to the Harry Potter History of Magic exhibition at the British Library, something else I’d waited months for. It was amazing, there was a different room for each class Harry had at Hogwarts filled with historical and cultural facts that J.K. Rowling had used to create the world.

February Recap (3)

The Beast from the East (God I hate that name) hit the UK, and then Storm Emma came along afterwards bringing snow, snow, and even more snow to the UK. I know other countries out there have it worse than what we’ve had in the UK, but we’re a country that’s never prepared for extremes in weather, and it’s been horrible. It’s March and there’s supposed to be blossom on the trees but we still have snow on the ground.

Sorry, rant over.

Monthly Recaps - Book Haul

After January I seem to have hit the other extreme in book hauls and didn’t buy much in February, but wait until you see the books that will be in my March haul.

OBSIDIO! OBSIDIO! OBSIDIO!

Obsidio

Can anyone guess what book I’m excited for this month? There are some incredible March releases but Obsidio is at the top of my every list, as soon as I have it in my hands I’ll be getting started on it. I’m also planning more re-reading; I want to finish the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series and in preparation for Obsidio I’m going to be picking up Illuminae and Gemina again as well.

February Next Month

I start my new job on Monday (I am both nervous and excited) so it may be a bit of a struggle at first juggling my increased workload with blogging but I have faith in my time management skills. I hope to end March on track when it comes to blogging and ready to start the re-write of my WIP.

I hope everyone else had a good February, and I hope you all have an even better March as well.

Let me know what books you’ve read during the second month of the year, and if you’ve found yourself wondering where this month has gone? Does anyone have any big plans for March, they don’t have to be blogging or reading plans, and who else is beyond excited for the release of Obsidio?

Happy reading!

  1. Oh, that Harry Potter exhibit looks amazing! I’m so glad you got to see that, knowing how much of a big HP fan you are. 😂 And AAHHH I am so so excited for Obsidio! I have no idea when I’ll get my library copy, but I’m so excited to see how this series ends. 😍

Good luck with your WIP, Beth! I think we always tend to think that we’ll accomplish more than we actually do. 😂 And omgggg I WISH it snowed here! I get that it’s probably a little annoying to those who see it all the time, but… I never see snow, and I love it. 😂

Great post, Beth! Hope you’re having a fabulous March so far. ❤

    1. Yeah it really was, and I think the second I saw there was a Harry Potter exhibit at The British Library I was prepared to have my tickets booked! My copy of Obsidio was (finally) dispatched today, I am so impatient to have it in my hands but I’m re-reading Illuminae and Gemina before I start it.
Thanks so much May, ha that’s definitely been the case for me, but maybe this will be the month I actually accomplish what I set out to. We get bad snow maybe once every five years, and that’s more than enough for me.
Thanks so much I hope you’re having a fantastic March too! 🙂 ❤

  2. Hello Beth!!! ❤
That's great to hear that you've had a good reading month! It's an amazing feeling when we are reading books that we love, right!?
I am behind on my WIP as well! (I think I planned to be at least half done writing at this stage, though I am not even close yet!?) Maybe it is a habit of writers to always be behind haha :') In any case I think it is good to take your time with the research and planning part, to make sure that you are ready when the time for rewriting comes. Good luck!!
I like that you talked about some other things you've done this month, like the Harry Potter exhibition (which sounds super fun!!) How are you finding your new job!?
OMG have I forgotten that Obsidio is out THIS month!? That will have to be a must-read for me too 🙂 Wishing you a wonderful March ❤

    1. Hi Sophie. 🙂
Yeah that’s definitely an amazing feeling, and here’s hoping it’ll be one we manage to keep throughout the year as well.
I think it must be a case of writers just being that way. I suppose you could always say the more time we spend on our WIPs the better they’ll end up being right? I just want to make sure I’ve got the research and planning down before I even attempt to start writing. Thanks. 🙂
It’s part of my plan to start doing things outside of blogging. The exhibition was amazing, and my job is going great thanks. Busy but I like that.
I have been counting down the days, I can’t wait to dive into Obsidio because it’s going to be amazing for sure.
Thanks Sophie, I hope you have a brilliant March as well (and good luck with your WIP too!) 😀 ❤️

      1. Yes I agree that the more time (and thought) we put into our WIP, the better it becomes 🙂 All the best with the research and planning! I think I am finally getting into the groove for my current WIP (yay 🙂 )
That sounds like a great plan! Looking forward to hearing about more of your adventures 🙂
Yes! I have a feeling that Obsidio will be epic!!

  3. Oh my goodness I LITERALLY JUST FINISHED GEMINA AND YOU CANNOT BELIEVE HOW EXCITED I AM FOR OBSIDIO WHY IS IT SO AMAZING IT KILLS ME I NEED MORE.
Also I’m super looking forward to your Unearthed review (uses I missed it already?) because I just love Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner (aka the Starbound Trilogy) so I’ve been highly anticipating these.

    1. It’s not long to go now though, just over a week and then we’ll have this book in our hands and we’ll be able to start reading it. It’s going to be amazing though, you can just tell.
Nope, haven’t even written it yet so need to get on that ASAP, it was a good book but personally I think the Starbound series was that little bit better! 🙂

  4. Oof sorry about all that snow! It was cloudy and rainy literally every day for the month of February where I am. This past Saturday morning was the first bit of sun I had seen in a month, which is pretty nuts. It was gone behind clouds within a half hour but it was still nice to see.

That tea shop must be pretty dang good for having to wait so long for a table! Also I’m so jealous you got to see that Harry Potter exhibit! ❤

    1. It was definitely a shock. I can’t remember the last time I ever saw that much snow in my entire life (in England at least!) 😀 I get what you mean, finally seeing a break from the snow this weekend felt almost surreal. Oh it was amazing, and safe to say after our afternoon there I can see why it was so booked up too. 🙂

    1. Yeah I’d definitely say so. Oh I forgotten a little how much I loved Daughter of Smoke and Bone until I’d picked it up again. The History of Magic exhibition was amazing, and I’m glad the snow is gone here. Is it gone where you are as well?
      Thanks so much! 🙂 ❤️

  5. I said the exact same thing in my wrap up! January felt two months long and February flew by. Looks like you read some good books this month!

  6. Lovely wrap-up, Beth! Glad to hear you’re on track with your reading challenge, you’re doing awesome 🙂 On your WIP, I hope you will manage to get back on track right for camp NaNo to get started. Naming characters is the wooooooorst, I always have the hardest time finding names for them and always want to change them, so I get the struggle, haha 🙂
Best of luck for your new job, this is so exciting! ❤ ❤ I hope you'll have a fantastic month ❤

    1. Thanks so much Marie, yeah on track at the moment, maybe if I can keep being on track every month I’ll make it to my goal by the end of the year. It seems like everyone struggles with naming characters, there’s got to be an easier way to name them but I haven’t come across one.
Thanks so much, and I hope you have a brilliant month as well Marie. 🙂 ❤

  7. Sounds like you had a busy, yet great month Beth! 😀 125 books is a lot of books! But I have faith that you’ll beat your reading challenge, you read so fast! 🙂 That cafe looks so cute! And I bet the Harry Potter exhibit was fantastic!
We’ve been hearing about you ‘Beast from the East’ storm on our news here… the newscasters thought they were being funny when they titled the news story the beast from the east clobbers the U.K. (because clobbers is more of an English word than a North American word) I thought it just sounded silly. I hope that the storm has since passed on. We no longer have any snow, but they keep saying we’re supposed to get some big storm… I’ll believe it when I see it! 😛

    1. Definitely busy, but yeah a good month overall as well. 🙂 I may lower my actual goal but still try and reach 125, it’ll be less pressure if I don’t feel like that’s what I’m counting down to you know?
The Harry Potter exhibit was amazing.
I do have to say I’ve never heard anyone use the word ‘clobbers’ here in the UK so I’m not sure how accurate that is. The name is kind of ridiculous but the worst seems to have passed now and we’re getting warmer weather which is great to see. I’ll keep my fingers crossed you don’t get a big storm where you are Meghan, this one hasn’t been fun at all!

      Liked by 1 person

      1. I know exactly how you feel; it’s the reason I only put 93 books as my challenge, I know I can read more than that, but I don’t want to feel the pressure.
That’s good to hear! Are you going to write a blog post about the exhibit? Were you allowed to take photos?
Hm, interesting all this time I thought it was more English. I Googled it because I was curious, apparently the word Clobber originates from World War II and it was British air-force slang, who knew?!
That’s good to hear it’s warming up! Thanks, I hope not, but we still have a few weeks left of winter and anything is possible!

        Liked by 1 person

      2. I’ll have to remember that for next year.
Probably won’t write a post about it simply because we weren’t allowed to take photos, so I’d have nothing to really go with it to break up the text.
I didn’t know that actually, but probably explains why it’s not used as much now if it was World War II slang.
That’s all right, and in that case I’ll keep my fingers crossed you don’t! 😀

  8. I totally get you about your WIP. I’m behind to but I will never make to for April’s NaNo. Well, my February was a mess but I’m thinking that my March will be much better.
About snow ans storm, in Rome snopwed few days ago and now I found daises in my garden… But the weathrr is gloomy, cold and it’s constantly raining

    1. Yeah I said to someone else in the comments that January and February have been funny months and I haven’t been all that inspired, here’s hoping March will be exactly what I need to get settled and actually get more work done on my WIP.
Oh someone showed me a clip of a snowstorm in Rome all around the Colosseum. It’s been insane, but at least the rain is better than the snow right? 🙂

  9. *gasp* There was a Harry Potter exhibit? 😮 I’m so glad you were able to go! I really should see if there are any Harry Potter exhibits around where I live, because I would definitely go if there was one 😊 Best of luck on your WIP, and I hope you have a wonderful March!

  10. I haven’t made as much progress with my writing for my WIP as I would like to have made either. Sometimes I have a feeling that I need another person to force me to write. It may not have the best content then, but at least I’d be getting somewhere hahaha also, I hope you finally found some names!!!!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. It feels like it’s been a funny couple of months, and for some reason I haven’t been as inspired in January and February as I normally am. I’m hoping March will give me the kick in the butt I seem to need. 🙂
Thanks, the names seem to be a very ongoing process. 😀

  11. OBSIDIO OBSIDIO OBSIDIO!!!

I’m so glad that you had a great month, and it seems like you read loads of amazing books too!! And with your WIP, don’t worry, YOU’LL GET THERE!! Don’t worry too much about procrastination b/c then if you force yourself to write it will become a chore for you!! I hope that everything goes well for you in March and you read some amazing books (OBSISIO)

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yes and I’m hoping there’ll be even more amazing books in March to get through as well! 😀 Oh I get what you mean, I don’t want writing to ever become a chore for me so I’m just going to take it as it comes and get to the re-write when I get to it.
Thanks so much, and yeah the fact that Obsidio is being released means it’s kind of guaranteed to be an amazing month! 😀

      1. YESSS (BUT LET’S BE HONEST, OBSIDIO IS THE MOST IMPORTANT… wait who said that? aha)
I found that writing was becoming a little bit of a chore??? *gasp* so I stopped because I have so much with school and it was just ANOTHER thing that I felt that I HAD to do. I hope that your writing goes well in March!!!

      2. Don’t worry I agree with you on that side of things! 😀
Oh that’s the best thing to do when something like that happens. It’s the same with blogging you need to love what you’re doing and it’s impossible to stick to something if it’s become more of a chore than anything else.
        Thanks Lu! 🙂

  12. Woah, a mixed month alright, it seems like it was quite busy! Good luck on your new job, hope you’ll do great! Also, woah, your reading challenge is… quite intimidating:)) I have mine set at a humble 50 books (I’m hoping to go above that number though).
Don’t beat yourself up too much over the situation with your WIP! Hell knows I’d spend months on picking character names…
Great post! Here’s to an even greater March 😀

    1. Definitely busy, but overall a month with more good than bad which I guess is the main thing right? 🙂 Thanks so much, and yeah I’m regretting setting it that high because it seems a little insurmountable at the moment.
Thanks, yeah I’m just going to go steadily on my WIP and get to it when I get to it.
Thanks so much, and I hope you have an amazing March too. 🙂

    1. Yeah I got through some amazing books, and hopefully it will be the same in March as well. Oh I hope you manage to get through it soon then, it’s one of my all-time favourite series and I’m loving it just as much the second time around as the first.
Thanks so much, and you too! 🙂

    1. Oh it was amazing, I’m glad I got the chance to go even though it took me a little while to actually make it there.
Yeah pretty much, it’s a companion to the exhibit I haven’t had a chance to read through it all yet but it’s a beautiful book.

  13. Fantastic wrap-up Beth! From the looks of it, you’ve been through some truly amazing books in February (and they all look sooooo beautiful!!!). And wow, Cutter & Squidge’s Genie’s Cave Afternoon Tea looks amazing. Looking forward to your thoughts on Obsidio as well as that epic haul for March!!! Happy reading, Beth!

Obsidio is going to be amazing, I can’t wait to get my hands on it.
Thanks again Lashaan, and you too! 😀

  15. I also read daughter of smoke and bone this month and I love hearing other people’s opinion on it. I didn’t like it at all but everyone I know absolutely love it! Will definitely finish the series in the future, hope it becomes pure fantasy in the second and third book because that’s what I’m currently craving gaah!
