Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Books I’ve Decided I’m No Longer Interested in Reading.
I’m doing something a little different for this week’s Top Ten Tuesday (which you’ll probably have realised very quickly even if I hadn’t told you because there are way more than ten books on my list this week). Back in July last year I set a Mid Year To-Read Goal to try and get through all the books I’d brought, that were sitting on my bookshelves gathering dust, but that I hadn’t read.
I managed to get through a few but nowhere near enough, and with the new year I took the opportunity to sort through everything and decided to do a major unhaul of my books. That’s what this post is about.
Fantasy

I used to really love Maria V. Snyder’s Study series, Poison Study is probably one of the most re-read books sitting on my bookshelves, but for some reason her latest releases haven’t interested me as much.
As far as I’m concerned Yelena and Valek’s story ended in Fire Study, and honestly I’m fine with that.
Contemporary

- How Hard Can Love Be? by Holly Bourne
- What’s a Girl Gotta Do? by Holly Bourne
I’ve heard great things about Holly Bourne’s books, and It Only Happens in the Movies is a recent add to my to-read list so it’s very possible that one day The Spinster Club series will find its way back on my TBR list. However, at the moment, it’s a series I’m not that interested in picking up.

Sci-Fi
- Flashfall by Jenny Moyer
- Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth
I mentioned in my Mid Year To-Read Goal post that there was a lot of controversy surrounding Carve the Mark, and that I was still on the fence about whether or not I’d be picking it up. Well I’ve finally come off the fence and decided that this is a book I won’t be reading.

Dystopian
- Flawed by Cecelia Ahern
- The Thousandth Floor by Katherine McGee
Steampunk
These weren’t books I brought for myself, but books I got through Owl Crate and Fairy Loot subscription boxes. Seeing as I’m not really a massive fan of the Steampunk genre they were never really books I would have picked up on my own anyways. Yes I’ve read a couple of Steampunk books that I enjoyed but they never left me wanting more so I’ve taken these two off my to-read list.

Reading Every Night 
Oh, yeah, I DEFINITELY won’t be reading The Thousandth Floor. I’ve heard that it has the bury your gays trope (twice) and also some really problematic things, and I’m staying far far away from that. Glad you unhauled it as well, Beth!
I also don’t think I’ll be reading a lot of books by authors who have been accused of sexual assault (like most recently, Tristina Wright). I was already on the fence about 27 Hours with its problems of colonialism, but then being accused of sexual harrassment made me take it off permanently.

Oh that sucks. We need diversity in books yeah but I hate the bury your gays trope because it just seems to be everywhere. Can we have gay characters without worrying they’ll be killed?
Ohh, I hadn’t heard that about Tristina Wright, but I had heard it about James Dashner and Jay Asher so they’re two authors who won’t be appearing on my TBR list anymore.

Always sucks when I have to drop things off of my TBR, I always feel so guilty! Especially if it’s books I physically own… However, I’ve had to do this over and over, so I relate to this post big time. I haven’t read any of the books on here, but I do have some of them on my TBR (the steampunk ones are higher ranked)… I love the idea for this post! Definitely love what you went with for the challenge~

Yeah some of these I definitely felt guilty about dropping, but at the same time there are so many books out there I want to read I can’t waste my time with books I don’t want to read just because I own them.

I still have some of these on my TBR. I have had Snyder’s books on my TBR forever and I STILL haven’t gotten around to them! It’s a shame that the rest of the study series didn’t really grab your interest, but at least you’ve found a place where it was ok to end and that you have that form of closure to the series in your own way.
I read the Thousandth Floor a while back and I actually ended up DNFing – I really struggled to get along with it because I felt that there wasn’t really enough happening to really keep me hooked.
I do have some of these others on my TBR, like Everland, The Edge of Everything and a few others. I do still really need to go through my GR TBR in general and remove some of the books that I KNOW I will never read… but it is a daunting task XD

I think Snyder is still a good author, and I’m always going to look back on her books that I did read with fondness because I loved them when I was younger. The first half of the series was great, and it’s a good stopping point as well.
Yeah I’ve heard mixed things about The Thousandth Floor, and honestly I haven’t heard much about The Edge of Everything which has kind of meant that I’ve fallen out of interest with it.
I need to do the same thing. Definitely daunting but sometimes it needs to be done.

I’ve never read anything by Veronica Roth; just never had the interest. I’ve also tried to go through my physical TBR and pass a lot along as I know I won’t get to them, or at least not anytime soon. I DID really love Tear You Apart by Sarah Cross though!

I’m going to be brutally honest and say I wouldn’t really recommend anything by her either. I’ve read her other series but looking back it’s been kind of forgettable really.
Did you manage to cross off a lot of books then? I ended up removing more than I ever thought I would going through my TBR pile.
I really enjoyed Sarah Cross’s other book, just haven’t been motivated to pick up Tear You Apart and likely won’t now. 🙂

Yeah this was definitely a productive haul. I feel like I had to make some harsh cuts here and there (so some of these books m could end up back on my TVR list one day) but for now I won’t be getting around to them (and given I’ve just unhauled then I can’t say I’d recommend them either!) 😀

That’s great to hear 🙂 Sometimes we make tough decisions that we don’t regret, right? When I gave away a lot of my clothes/things in my last move, I don’t even remember most of the things that I’ve let go, even the ones that were tough decisions!

Yeah I definitely get that. A lot of the things I’ve given up in the past I don’t regret but there are always those one or two things that I’m kicking myself for throwing out! 🙂

Oh I was a bit scared, when I saw Holly Bourne’s books, that you gave up on her completely. I only read It only happens in the movies, but I LOVED it so much, I definitely want to read more from her, so I’m glad to hear you’re keeping one of her books on your TBR 🙂

I definitely haven’t given up on her completely, and it’s very likely that one day her Spinster Club series will end up back on my to-read list one day. Either way It Only Happens in the Movies is still on my list mainly because I’ve seen some brilliant reviews for it that have convinced me I need to read it as well. 😀

I was looking at this list and wondering what I could scream at you to keep, but I haven’t actually read a single book that you mentioned, so I am totally okay with you unhauling them hahahaha (not that you needed my approval anyway)

Ha, yeah there were a few books that could have potentially been unhauled along with the ones on this list but were saved at the last minute by other bloggers’ opinions (The Diabolic was the main one!) There’s even a chance some of these could make it back on my TBR list one day. 😀

Ah I really relate about the Poison Study series- I used to love that too. Yeah I sort of want to pick up Bourne’s books, cos I’ve heard good things, but I never really feel like it at the same time. And I’ve just got zero interest in reading Carve the Mark- not actually cos of the controversy, but because I’ve lost interest in her books (and I literally haven’t heard anything good about it either). Looks like you’ve done a great job at unhauling your tbr!

Yeah sometimes reading tastes just change don’t they? There are so many authors I loved when I was younger but now I’m just not motivated to pick up their new books at all. Unfortunately that includes the Study series.
I’ll probably add Bourne’s books back to my to-read list at some point if I see some positive reviews for them, and yeah it’s the same thing for me with Carve the Mark as well. Over time I’ve just been less and less motivated to pick it up.

I haven’t read any of these books tbh =P I did a massive cleaning for my goodreads shelf and even my wishlist just recently but I don’t remember the books I removed

Yeah I think of all the books I could have removed from my to-read list these are the ones I feel like most people will potentially agree with.
Well the only reason I can remember what books I did remove was because of the post I did last July about my Mid-Year TBR Goal. If I hadn’t had that I would have had no clue either. 🙂

You are not missing anything by not reading Carve the Mark. I tried to read it despite the controversy because I just wanted to form my own opinion. I could not get through it! It was so boring!

Yes Carve the Mark was one I brought because I’d read some of the authors work before and kind of liked the sound of the blurb as well, but the more time that’s passed between me buying it and now the more I’ve kind of become less interested. 🙂
There are too many books out there I want to read to bother with the ones that no longer interest me. 😀
