Ringing in the New Year Book Tag

I was only tagged in this recently but seeing as it’s a New Year tag, and it makes the most sense to take part in it now rather than in October or November when I would naturally get around to it in my queue, I’ve moved it up my list. I was tagged by Sophie at Blame it on Chocolate. Thanks so much for the tag Sophie, I had a lot of fun with this one so I hope you enjoy reading my answers just as much.

Best book and/or series that you’ve read in 2017.

Seeing as there is an either/or option I am going to pick the best book, and the best series that I read in 2017.

If I had to pick just one the best book would be A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab. I had high hopes for this book given it was the last in the Shades of Magic trilogy and given the cliffhanger A Gathering of Shadows ended on, but V.E. Schwab exceeded my expectations. There’s a reason she’s one of my all-time favourite authors after all.

The best series would be the Red Rising Saga by Pierce Brown, by a mile. I re-read both Red Rising and Golden Son and once again was hooked, even though I knew how each book would end I was on the edge of my seat. Morning Star I picked up for the first time and when I finished it I was kicking myself for not having picked it up sooner.

Red Rising

Authors that you’ve recently found and would like to read more of in the new year.

Adam Silvera is at the top of the list. I picked up all three of his books in 2017, though I did suffer from an extreme book hangover after deciding to read More Happy Than Not and History is All You Left Me back to back, and loved them. At the moment They Both Die at the End is my favourite of his, but there are some upcoming releases from him I can’t wait for.

Adam Silvera

Most anticipated book turned movie/TV show?

Simon Vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli is getting a movie and I can’t wait. They’ve changed the name to Love, Simon (which I can kind of understand because the actual title is a bit of a mouthful) but so far based on the trailers released it looks incredible. Here’s hoping it’ll be a fairly faithful book to film adaptation.

Name a character that you wouldn’t mind sharing a kiss with at midnight (if there is one.)

Oh there are too many to count so instead of listing them all, and forcing you to read a miles long list, I’ll simply say I don’t kiss and tell.

What’s on your TBR for 2018? (Top 5-10 will suffice if it’s an extremely long list!)

Oh there are so many. Suffice to say every book out there yet to be released is one I am eagerly anticipating and hope to read as soon as I have it in my hands.

The top five at the moment are;

  • Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi, because it sounds incredible and based on the sampler I got from YALC and the pre-release reviews I am going to LOVE this one.
  • Obsidio by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff, because it’s the last book in The Illuminae Files series and you just know it’s going to be epic.
  • Defy the Worlds by Claudia Gray, because I need more from Noemi and Abel and I need more of their story.
  • Legendary by Stephanie Garber, because I loved Caraval and can’t wait to go back to that world with Tella’s story.
  • Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare, because it’s the last book in The Dark Artifices series and its release means I can finally pick up the first two.

Also on my list is anything Pierce Brown releases, anything V.E. Schwab releases, anything Marissa Meyer releases, anything Sarah J. Maas releases, and anything Marie Lu releases.

How many books do you hope to read in 2018?

At the moment my Goodreads Reading Challenge is set to 125 books. Last year I only managed to read 109 books but I decided to give myself more of a challenge this year and at the moment I’m fairly confident. That could change but I guess I’ll just have to wait and see.

Will you participate in the Goodreads Reading Challenge or any others? (PopSugar, Down the TBR Hole, etc.)

For the past few years I’ve only taken part in the Goodreads Reading Challenge, it will always be the one challenge I take part in without fail, but one of my resolutions for 2018 was to take part in a Readathon. I don’t have anything in the works yet, I’m waiting to see what ones there are out there and find something I think will suit me and my mood reading tendencies.

Any New Year’s Resolutions? (Bookish, blogging (or vlogging), and otherwise.)

I recently did a Top Ten Tuesday post on my 2018 bookish, writing and personal resolutions for 2018; but to sum it up my goals for this year are to continue reading, continue blogging, continue writing, and to try and make some room in my life for my other hobbies outside of blogging. I’m not very good at sticking to resolutions so I guess we’ll see in December how well I did with these ones.

I’m not going to tag anyone mainly because we’re well past the New Year now, and I think past the point where most people will be ringing in the New Year as well.

So instead let me know what your answers for these questions would be. What authors have you recently discovered but want to read more from in 2018? Which character, or characters, would you kiss at midnight? Will you be taking part in any reading challenges this year? And if there’s anyone out there who wants to take part consider yourself tagged.

And I still need to read something by Adam Silvera- definitely want to try they both die in the end, so I’m glad it was good 😀 definitely anticipating love simon (still need to read the book though) Definitely anticipating Obsidio and Children of blood and bone! Love, Simon looks amazing, and I’m sure Children of Blood and Bone and Obsidio will be too. March is going to be a great month for book releases right?

  2. I love your answers, Beth 🌸
A Conjuring of Light and Red Rising are both still on my TBR; I know the whole bookish community loves both those series so I am excited to read them (eventually).
I also only discovered Silvera last year and I am blown away by his stories, I haven’t yet read all his books, I still need to read More Happy Than Not. Also I’m so excited about the new book he is co-writting with Becky Albertalli; I’m sure it is going to be amazing 😍

I have not yet read Simon Vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda so I haven’t actually seen the trailer (I’m so scared of getting spoiled). I really want to read the book and go watch the movie.

    Great Tag 🌸

    1. Thanks so much Michelle! 🙂
Oh my god yes the bookish community love those two series and I really really love them as well so I hope you manage to get to them both soon! Same here, I actually binge read his first two releases which was a mistake because they’re emotional reads but I couldn’t resist when I discovered I loved his work. His book with Becky Albertalli is high on my to-read list but I already know I’m going to love it too! 🙂
Definitely read the book before the movie. I’m sure there will be some differences because there always is in adaptations right, but it seems like a pretty faithful adaptation.
      Thanks so much! 🙂 ❤️

  4. I am not surprised to find the Red Rising series, even if it was more of re-read haha Weirdly, I still haven’t read a single book by Adam Silvera even though I follow him on all the social media sites and always like the sound of his books. I will DEFINITELY read the one he wrote together with Becky Albertalli though haha

    1. Well Morning Star was a first time read for me so in my mind it still counts! 😀 Oh I’d highly recommend his books Kat, they’re all incredible though very heartbreaking so if you do get around to them be prepared for that. Yeah the one he’s writing with will be Becky Albertalli at the top of my TBR list when it’s released! 🙂 ❤

  5. Fantastic answers, Beth! As you know, I only read More Than This so far by Adam Silvera, but I am looking forward to discovering his other books, they all sound amazing and a little bit heartbreaking, haha 🙂
I can’t wait to see Love, Simon, from all the trailers it sounds like it will be a really good adaptation, let’s keep our fingers crossed! 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Marie! 😀 His books are definitely heartbreaking, but so worth reading as well. They Both Die at the End is actually my favourite by him so I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed that you love it even more than More Happy Than Not! 🙂
My fingers are tightly crossed, but yeah the trailers look amazing so I think that’s a good omen. 🙂 ❤

  6. I’m doing the popsugar challenge and i think the book They both die at the end would fit the prompt “a book about death or grief” so i might try it. Never read anything from the author

  7. Hello Beth ❤
I am REALLY excited for the Love, Simon movie! So far I've been hearing good things from people who have been to the early screenings, so I guess that is a good sign that it will be a faithful adaptation!? And I think Becky Albertalli was helping out in writing the script as well!?
I am also super looking forward to Obsidio 😀 😀

    1. Hi Sophie! 😀
Oh the trailers look amazing, and based on them alone I’m sure it will be a faithful adaptation. I don’t know anyone who’s been to an early screening but hearing you say that makes me even more excited, also hearing that Becky Albertalli helped writing the script too!
Obisido is going to be great, I’m counting down the days. 🙂 ❤
