Totally Should’ve Book Tag

I took part in this tag once before, nearly a year and a half ago actually, so it’s about time I took part in it again. No worries though, I made sure I had different answers for each of the questions. I was tagged by Azia at The Uncharted Word, Jacquie at Rattle the Stars, Melissa at Book Nerd Momo, and Anna at My Bookish Dream. Thanks so much for the tag everyone, I had a lot of fun with this one so I hope you enjoy reading my answers just as much.

Totally Should've BookTag

Totally Should’ve Gotten a Sequel

Heartless by Marissa Meyer

Granted this was a Queen of Hearts origin/Alice in Wonderland retelling, and where Marissa Meyer ended Cath’s story fit perfectly in with the character we know from Lewis Carroll’s original tale, but I still want more. I’d love to see more of Cath’s reign, more of her descent into the role of the mad Queen of Hearts.

Totally Should’ve Gotten a Spin Off Series

Invictus by Ryan Graudin

The way Invictus ended closed off Far and his crews’ adventure, and I felt it was a perfect ending for the story, but I’d love and spin-off series following Invictus through time. The heists they perform are full of danger, though less universe-ending than the danger they were thrown in in the book, and I want more of them.

Invictus

An Author Who Should Write More Books

Erin Morgenstern

Right now I don’t even need it to be a sequel to The Night Circus – though don’t get me wrong I would more than love a sequel to The Night Circus – I just want more from the author who created one of my favourite worlds, and who wrote one of my all-time favourite books.

Erin Morgenstern

A Character Who Totally Should’ve Ended Up With Someone Else

Flame in the Mist by Renee Ahdieh

It’s not that I don’t love Mariko and Okami, but more that I don’t think she should have been with anyone. Mariko’s character in Flame in the Mist was all about discovery, not only was she trying to work out who wanted her dead but also who she was, and I just didn’t see the point of a romance getting in the way of her individual character development.

Totally Should’ve Had a Movie Franchise

Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo

The real question is why doesn’t this book have a movie franchise yet? The Six of Crows duology is beyond incredible; it’s fast paced, full of action, adventure, danger and risk. It has incredible characters and honestly it’s the perfect book to put on the big screen.

Six of Crows Series

Totally Should’ve Kept the Original Covers

Gilded Cage by Vic James

I’m not sure if this was the original cover or just the ARC cover in the UK. Either way I definitely preferred it to the actual cover which is just a little too bland for me.

Gilded Cage

However the series is going through a cover redesign, and of all three I definitely, 100%, prefer the newest covers to any that came before it.

New Dark Gifts series

Totally Should’ve Stopped at Book One

Song of the Current by Sarah Tolcser

I said in my review that I’m excited for the second book, and I stand by that, but Song of the Current could have been a perfect standalone book because I felt like everything was wrapped up nicely by the end. I was left with no questions and while I’m excited to see where Caro goes next if there had never been a second book in the works I would have been happy with that as well.

As for everyone else out there reading this post, let me know what your answers for these questions would be. Which author would you love to see more releases from? What books do you think should have kept their original covers? And if there’s anyone out there who wants to take part consider yourself tagged.

  1. I would love for Erin Morgenstern to write more books! And I completely agree on not needing a sequel to The Night Circus (though it would be amazing to have another book set in that world), I simply need more of her writing! I would literary read anything that she writes. 😀
The Six of Crows duology would definitely make amazing movies! Though I’m always apprehensive when it comes to book to movie adaptation, especially some of my all time favourite books. I just don’t want them to ruin the story or characters (and I have seen that happen enough times to know it’s a possibility).
I’m glad that you had fun with this tag, Beth! ❤ 🙂

    1. It would be incredible. 🙂 Honestly I wouldn’t even be fussed for it to be a sequel to The Night Circus (though I would LOVE that) I’d just want anything from her.
Yeah if there was ever an adaptation in the works I’d hope it would be a faithful one to the books but in my mind when I answered this question it was an adaptation like Game of Thrones or Harry Potter (really good despite some of the changes that had been made!)
Thanks so much Anna. 🙂 ❤

  2. Whilst I loved Heartless as a standalone – I would totally be down for a sequel! The developments both character and plot wise were amazing and I was left feeling like I wanted more when I closed the book.
I still haven’t picked up Song of the Current, but it is on my never ending TBR *Facepalm*
Six of crows would be such a good movie or even a TV Series! :-O If it was done right, it would probably be the thing of the year for me XD

    1. Same here, I always wonder what happens to characters after the last page but in Cath’s case I really do feel like there’s so much more of her story left to be told. 🙂
Ah, the never ending TBR list, I have one of those too! 😀 Hopefully you’ll be able to get around to Song of the Current soon though, and yeah if we ever do get a Six of Crows TV show or movie I’d pray to all the Gods out there that it’s a decent adaptation! 😀

      1. It would be so interesting to see Meyers take on her story – like an Alice in Wonderland, but from Cath’s perspective?
Yes! If it’s not done right, it would be pretty terrible 😂

  3. Hi Beth ❤ 🙂
I LOVED The Night Circus, and I also wish that Erin Morgenstern will write more books! I would love for there to be a sequel to The Night Circus since I loved the characters so much 🙂

  4. Great Answers Beth 🌸
I adored Heartless and I totally agree with you; we definitely need a sequel! OMW – Yes, Erin Morgenstern just has to release a new book already, The Night Circus is one of my all time favourite books and the way she writes is just brilliant!
I have Six of Crows and Invictus on my TBR but I’ve hears both of them are amazing so I’m looking forward to reading them!

    1. Thanks so much Michelle! 😀
Yes, there’s still so much of Cath’s story I’d love to read. Plus the sequel would definitely be darker and I love dark fairytales. I’d give anything to have Erin Morgenstern write another book, it doesn’t even need to be a Night Circus sequel, I’d just love another book from her.
Oh I really hope you enjoy them then, in my opinion they’re both incredible books and I know I’m not alone in thinking that so I’m sure you’ll love them as well. 🙂

  5. A movie for Six of Crows needs to have the right actors and the right director or else I’ll probably have no hope in it. 😦 And maaaaaaaan, Erin Morgenstern should totally write more. I don’t know what’s holding her back, but I’d understand if it’s just a fear of never being able to do better than Night Circus. That was one hell of a story! Great tag, Beth!

    1. In my mind (for the purpose of this tag at the very least) any movie version of Six of Crows would be a perfect adaptation (I can dream at the very least right?)
I don’t either, but actually yeah it can’t be easy trying to live up to The Night Circus. I still really hope one day we do get another book from her. Thanks so much Lashaan! 😀

  6. Oh YES to a movie franchise of SoC! I’d honestly be really scared of a movie adaptation of it because there are SO many ways the characters could be portrayed wrong, but if it all went well, that’d be SUCH a great movie. 😍

I haven’t read any of the other books in the post, but if Erin Morgenstern came out with another book, that’d be great, since I’m honestly THAT interested in TNC! (I know that you’re a big fan, sorry!!) 😂😂

    1. Actually yeah that’s something to think about, but in my mind if we ever do get a Six of Crows adaptation it’s one of those perfect ones that rarely happens. 🙂 I live in hope May.
Ha, that’s all right. I guess in the end we’re both hoping she comes out with another book so that’s something isn’t it? 😀

  7. Hmm, I’m intrigued about Heartless… There were so many mixed reviews for it back when it first came out, I was never sure what I would encounter. I’m glad you loved it enough to want a sequel, though! Even if the book was wrapped up nicely.
I have yet to read any of these books but I’m so excited for them! I’m a bit nervous about Flame in the Mist’s romance, though… Seeing as you’d hoped the ship had been a different one. Maybe I’ll like it? I don’t know. I hope so xD
I’m not sure what my answers would be for this one… I might have been tagged for this already, too, so eventually I’ll do a proper post on it. I did it last year but there have been so many books since! It’s insane hahaha
    Lovely tag, Beth ❤

    1. Any book that is a combination of Marissa Meyer and Alice in Wonderland is always going to be a win for me. 🙂 And yeah Heartless was wrapped up nicely but at the same time there’s still more of the story that could be told if Meyer ever wanted to go back to Cath one day. 🙂
Oh in that case I really hope you enjoy them. I’ll be interested in hearing what you think about the romance in Flame in the Mist as well that’s for sure.
Ha, yeah we get through so many books each year I feel like we could do the same tag over and over just with different answers right? 😀
Thanks so much Sophie. 🙂 ❤

      1. I sure hope I do! But even if I don’t, it’ll be interesting to discuss it with you in the future, for sure 🙂
Yup, I think this is one of those tags hahaha Although it’s really cool to see how our tastes have changed and how many of our favorites get or not replaced in the meantime? It’s always intriguing to me to check out everyone’s tags but also my own because of that 🙂
        You’re very welcome, Beth! ❤

      2. Oh yes definitely feel free to discuss this with me as much as you want! I love nothing more than talking about books! 😀
Ha, yeah I should probably go back to the first post I did for this tag and see how much my answers have changed, probably quite a bit I reckon! 😀 ❤

    1. Definitely steal it Trang, I’d love to read your answers for this one! 😀 Yeah the romance was nice but I feel like it didn’t need to be in the book. 🙂
Oh my GOD a movie of The Night Circus would be an ultimate dream come true of mine! 😀

  8. Lovely post, Beth! So happy you finally managed to get around to this one! Oh how I would love to read more books by Erin Morgenstern. The Night Circus was a gift, but I’m sure there’s something else she could dazzle us with! And I would love a sequel to Heartless. Even though it ended well, I think there’s more to the Queen of Heart’s story to be told. I was really dissatisfied with the romance in Flame in the Mist. I think I would have been happier if she didn’t even have a love interest, too. Six of Crows would make for an excellent film. It’d be like the fantasy version of Ocean’s Eleven! I still need to read Song of the Current. It’s great to hear that it’s fairly strong as a possible standalone, but a sequel is almost always welcome. Hopefully the second book is just as good if not better than the first! Again, great post! ❤

    1. Thanks so much Azia! 😀 Yeah it does take me a little while but I do get around to all the tags in my queue eventually. 🙂 Anything Erin Morgenstern writes will automatically go to the very top of my to-read list, and I can pretty much guarantee that I’ll love it as well. Definitely more, there’s still plenty of Cath’s story left before Alice arrives in Wonderland (at least that’s what it felt like at the end of Heartless).
Yeah in my opinion it was almost like it had been added because Flame in the Mist was a YA book and YA books have to have romance in them.
It definitely would, fingers crossed we get a movie one day right? And a sequel is definitely welcome for Song of the Current, I’m certainly looking forwards to reading it.
      Thanks Azia! 😀 ❤

  9. OH it is frustrating whenever some characters are having a romance in a story and… it’s not really needed there. I’m sorry that happened with Flame in the Mist , I still have to read that book at some point haha 🙂
    Lovely answers, Beth xx

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yeah overall I still really enjoyed Flame in the Mist, I just would have enjoyed the story a little more if there wasn’t a romance. In my mind it almost felt like it was put in simply because most YA books these days need to have a romance you know?
I really hope you enjoy it Marie, it’s a great story and you may even feel differently about the romance as well. 🙂
      Thanks so much! ❤ Xxx

      1. Yeah I agree – it bothers me a bit. I mean, I am all for a great romance, I am a marshmallow haha, but… it’s not always necessary in every single story. Some books just don’t need that.

  10. OH MY GOODNESS YES! I totally agree – Six of Crows needs a movie like, now! I’ve just read it (hoping to read Crooked Kingdom soon), and it would make an incredible movie!
And I’m currently reading an Alice in Wonderland retelling, too – The Looking Glass Wars, by Frank Beddor – it’s really good, and Heartless sounds good too 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Ohh, I really hope you enjoy Crooked Kingdom, I thought it was even better and it actually ended up being my top read of 2016 as well. 🙂 A movie would be amazing that’s for sure.
I actually read the first book in The Looking Glass Wars and really enjoyed it, then never read the later books. Maybe I should check out the series again! 😀

  11. I’m so sad that we haven’t seen anything else from Erin Morgenstern, especially after how amazing successful The Night Circus was. Man I wish Six of Crows would get a movie deal, that would be amaaaaazing!!!!! Awesome tag and awesome answers 🙂

    1. Yeah that’s really a shame. She’s such an incredible writer and I would be first in line to buy any new book she decided to release. 🙂
Six of Crows would make an epic movie, another release I would be first in line to get my hands on. Maybe one day, I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed that’s for sure.
      Thanks so much! 😀

  12. I would definitely watch a Six of Crows movie! Sometimes I don’t totally understand how some YA books get movies and ones I think would do really well don’t.

I also loved Heartless and would read a sequel, but I also appreciate standalones. There are so many series!

    1. Same here, it would make an epic movie so I’m hoping one day we’ll get one! No I don’t understand either, I guess it’s just about what the current trends are. Like when The Hunger Games was popular loads of dystopian series got movies as well.
Oh yeah, it’s nice to have standalones, I guess I just can’t resist the desire the know what happens after ‘the end’ you know? 😀

  15. Thanks for tagging me! Not entirely sure if I’ll end up participating because I always find these kinds of questions so hard to answer but I’m definitely going to think about them.

As for the Gilded Cage covers — the current UK is the white one with the cage and the US one is the one with the branches around the hand, based on what I saw on Amazon when getting links earlier! I’m not familiar with the blue one, so I don’t know where that comes into it. I agree that the US one is much more interesting than the rather plain UK one.

    1. That’s all right, and I get what you mean because there were a few questions for this one I struggled with a little. But if you do decide to take part I’d love to see what books you choose for each question. 🙂
Oh that’s a shame, I could have sworn I saw the one with the branches and the hand being released in the UK but I could be wrong, guess this is a series I need to get from Amazon US because those are the covers I love! 😀
