Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books I Meant to Read in 2017 but Didn’t (but Definitely Will in 2018)

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Books I Meant to Read in 2017 but Didn’t (but Definitely Will in 2018).

It probably won’t come as a surprise to many people when I say that I am not good at TBR lists. I try my best but there are always two things that get in my way; one is that I’m a mood reader and the other is that I can never read as much as I’d like to because my day job and real life gets in the way. Still these books are at the top of my TBR list for 2018, and hopefully that means I will get around to them before we reach 2019.

No promises though.

Top Ten Tuesday #91

A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers

This was one that ended up on my Winter TBR list as well. Basically my aim, if I don’t have A Closed and Common Orbit read by the end of Winter, is to have it read before my birthday when the third book in the Wayfarers series is released. That seems a do-able goal.

The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan

When it comes to Rick Riordan’s series I tend to read one, love it, and plan to get around to the next as soon as possible, which somehow means next year. If that pattern holds now I’ve finished the Heroes of Olympus I’ll be picking up the Kane Chronicles sometime around June.

Spellslinger by Sebastien de Castell

I first noticed this book because of the gorgeous cover, then I read the blurb and was hooked. For some reason the blurb brings to mind some of my favourite series and now my brain has made that connection I can’t wait to read Spellslinger. The only question is why haven’t I picked it up already?

The Novice by Taran Matharu

Originally my plan was to have read the Summoner series by the time YALC 2017 rolled around, but when that failed it changed to by the end of 2017. Obviously that also failed so now my plan is sometime in 2018. Here’s hoping third time’s the charm with this series.

City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare

Like with the Summoner series I had a plan for Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunter books, and it was to be up to date by the end of 2017. Then I heard everyone talking about Lord of Shadows – the cliffhanger ending and the wait for the third book – and realised it would be better to spread these series out because there is no way I am started the Dark Artifices until all three books are out.

The Assassin’s Blade by Sarah J. Maas

Honestly I’m not sure why this one is still on my to-read list. Normally, while short stories in general are hit or miss for me, short stories within series like The Assassin’s Blade are hits. Either way this is one I need to read before I pick up Tower of Dawn, so sometime in 2018 for sure.

Tower of Dawn by Sarah J. Maas

As much as I love Sarah J. Maas’ Throne of Glass series I wasn’t as excited for the release of Tower of Dawn as I have been her other books, mainly because I’m not a massive fan of Chaol’s character. I only got my copy of this book in November when I saw Sarah J. Maas in London so I’m not surprised this is one I didn’t read in 2017, but I will have it read before her next release is out.

Ringer by Lauren Oliver

I loved Replica; it was the first Lauren Oliver book I picked up but after finishing it I knew it wouldn’t be the last. Ringer was one of my most anticipated releases of 2017, I had my copy pre-ordered as soon as it was available on Amazon, and then I just left it sitting on my bookshelves.

Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco

Like A Closed and Common Orbit, Stalking Jack the Ripper was also on my Winter TBR list (and my Fall one before that). It’s a book I feel is perfect for the cold Winter weather when it’s dark outside and all you want is to curl up with a good book, so before February is over I will have read this one.

Girls Made of Snow and Glass by Melissa Bashardoust

I have seen some incredible reviews for Girls Made of Snow and Glass, and my aim was to pick up a copy so I could read it as soon as possible. Well it took me to the end of 2017 to get around to picking up my own copy, so hopefully it won’t take me to the end of 2018 to actually read it.

  1. I spot some really huge titles on here and I think you’ll probably end up enjoying all of them really hahah I actually have Red Pyramid; I think I might have mentioned it. I love the whole Egyptian mythos, so that’s one YA series I definitely want to check out. Especially when there isn’t many adult fantasy series with that mythos.. really… 😮

    1. Yeah there were plenty I meant to get around to but didn’t quite manage to in the end, and I’m sure I’ll enjoy these as well. Ohh, in that case I really hope you manage to get around to it soon and that you do really enjoy it Lashaan. I agree there’s not many books focused on Egyptian mythos but I’d love to see more one day! 😀

    1. Same here, I think one of the main reasons I love fairytale retelling is that they have that sense of similarity but they’re also something completely new. Here’s hoping we both enjoy Girls Made of Snow and Glass Dani, and yeah Spellslinger is top-ish in my TBR list at the moment! 🙂 ❤️

  5. Oh, I’m planning on reading Girls Made of Snow and Glass this year too!! I got a copy for Christmas so I’m definitely going to read it soon. I’ve heard so many glowing reviews for it (and also bad reviews, but not as much 😂) and I’m super excited!!

    I also need to read Stalking Jack the Ripper! I’m not much of a historical fiction fan, but I’ve heard good things about it, and a lot of my friends loved it, so I’ll probably give it a try. 😂 Great post, and I hope you get to all of these soon Beth! ❤

    1. You’re a step ahead of me because I don’t even have my own copy of Girls Made of Snow and Glass yet! 🙂 I haven’t actually seen any bad reviews, and the good reviews I’ve seen have practically been glowing so I can’t wait to get around to it. I hope you love it too May. 🙂
      Oh I am a massive fan of historical fiction, though I don’t read a lot of it at all. Stalking Jack the Ripper is another I’ve heard good things about though so I have high hopes. 🙂

  8. Oh you have some great books here, Beth! I am impatient for you to read Ringer, I hope you will love it as much as I did and that it will make you want to pick up more of Lauren Oliver’s books. As you know, she is one of my favorite authors and I’d dream for you to love her as well so we can fangirl together haha 🙂
    I also have Girls Made of Snow and Glass on my TBR! I got a physical copy for Christmas and I am SO excited to read it 😀

    1. In that case I’ll try and get around to Ringer soon-ish, and I’ll be sure to let you know what I think when I have read it as well Honestly Replica made me want to pick up all of Lauren Oliver’s releases so maybe Ringer will get me to bump them up my TBR list. 🙂

  10. Ah, I thought I was the only Throne of Glass fan who still hadn’t read The Assassin’s Blade yet! 🙈 I’ve had it on my TBR for so long; it’s actually ridiculous! Hopefully, I’ll get to it sometime this year! I also haven’t read Tower of Dawn, but I haven’t read Empire of Storms yet, so that’s probably why.

    I am hoping to read Stalking Jack The Ripper this year and pretty soon! I’ve heard amazing things about the series, so, hopefully, it delivers! 😄 And I need to catch up on all the Rick Riordan books; I AM SO BEHIND.

    1. Ha, no you’re definitely not. 🙂 I need to get around to it this year with the final book in the series being released. I almost feel like I need some kind of incentive to pick it up and the last book in the ToG series coming out is it! 😀
      Oh I really hope you enjoy Stalking Jack the Ripper as well then Mikaela (I’ve heard some brilliant things about it) and yes Rick Riordan’s books (that I’ve read so far) are incredible so I’m sure you’ll love them as well! 😀

  11. I really like your list of books you want to read this year and can I just say, YOU ARE SO LUCKY THAT YOU HAVEN’T READ THAT LORD OF SHADOWS ENDING YET. Honestly, wait as long as you can so you can go right into Queen Of Air And Darkness! LOS had A Gathering Of Shadows levels of ‘OH MY GOD SHE DID NOT JUST END THE BOOK HERE’ going on. And A Conjuring Of Light was out by the time I read that particular cliffhanger. And now I still have to wait ELEVEN more months to read the end to the TDA trilogy…

    And speaking of Cassie Clare books, I am actually planning to continue my reread so I’ve got all of the events super fresh in my mind in time for QOAAD. And seeing how there are exactly 11 novels (not counting the bind-ups) it’s a perfect year long challenge! And again, speaking of rereading books: same goes for the Throne Of Glass series! Though my ‘reread’ would also include a first read through of Tower Of Dawn which I cannot believe I haven’t read yet. I was a BIG Chaol fan throughout but somehow so many other books just sparked my interest more. Also, The Assassin’s Blade is pretty awesome! And it gives some characters you’ve already met in the books up to now a bit more backstory – especially in their relationship with Celeana! 🙂 And you get to meet and get to know Sam! 😉

    I’ll be getting a review copy (or a finished copy, I don’t know) of Becky’s most recent release at the end of the month as it’s finally being released in German too, so I’ll hopefully be reading that series soon! I keep hearing about it, but haven’t gotten around to it yet so this was perfect timing for me!

Thanks so much. 🙂 Yeah when I heard people talking about the cliffhanger in Lady Midnight I knew I had to wait for Lord of Shadows to be released before picking it up, then I heard everyone talking about the cliffhanger in Lord of Shadows and was just like, no, not picking up this series until it’s finished! Hearing you compare it to AGOS makes me even more glad because I read that one when it was released and the wait was UNBEARABLE! 😀
      I suppose that’s one good thing about me being a little behind when it comes to Cassandra Clare’s books. I read the first half of TMI series at the beginning of last year, I read TID books at the end of last year. This year my plan is to get to the second half of TMI series and then TDA books when Queen of Air and Darkness is released! All the events should be fresh in my mind. See I wasn’t much of a Chaol fan but I love SJM’s writing and I’ve heard good things about Tower of Dawn so I’m almost positive I’ll love it. I’ve heard great things about The Assassin’s Blade too. I know I need to read that before Tower of Dawn and I need to read Tower of Dawn before the last book in the Throne of Glass series is released so this year for sure! 😀
      Ohh, that’s great to hear, and I really hope you enjoy it in that case. Her book was one of my favourites the year I read it (I think 2016) so I’m sure you’ll enjoy it as well. 😀 ❤

I actually finished my reread of the first half of TMI early in 2017 and read Clockwork Angel this summer so I’m not sure if I actually want to go back all the way or if I should just continue reading on – especially because I also want to reread TOG and just thinking about how long those books are makes me worry that I might not have the time to reread them all in time for their last book’s release. But then maybe Sarah has to move TOG 7 back a bit too because of her pregnancy. Guess we’ll see how that works out. 🙂

I’d vote for just carrying on from Clockwork Angel, I’m sure you probably remember more of the first half of TMI than you think and that way you have more time to read new books as well. 🙂 The TOG books do get quite long, and part of me feels like I should reread that series myself before the last book is released but then I think about all the new books I still want to read and I’m not sure you know? Ohh, I didn’t think of that, but I think she said the baby shouldn’t effect the release of TOG7, yeah guess we’ll have to wait and see. 🙂

  12. I need to read Ringer too! I wanted to check it out from my library but couldn’t find it and reading it on audiobook/e book would be too annoying because of all the switching back and forth.

  14. I’ve been putting off Tower of Dawn for a while now. I’m definitely going to have to read it before the last book in the series comes out so I’ll definitely be reading it this year, but maybe I can wait a little longer. And Spellslinger sounds so good! I’ve been meaning to pick it up since I first heard of it. I really hope you like it! Great list!

  15. I’m definitely a mood reader as well! 😊 I’ve tried making a TBR list for myself for one month, but I really didn’t like how restricting it felt and have never made a monthly TBR list again. I do have a list of books that I want to get to eventually, but if that “eventually” means two years from now, I won’t give myself a hard time. Good luck with your TBR! 😋

    1. Oh I’ve completely given up on the idea of monthly TBR lists, just because I always felt so guilty when I never managed to complete them. It’s easier to just pick up what we wanna read when we wanna read it, plus we can avoid reading slumps that way too right?

  17. I’d say i share about 98% of this list as well smh for the same reasons, work & life gets in the way. The Assassin’s Blade however was PHENOMENAL! probably my favorite of all her books, it doesn’t read like a collection of Novellas…could’ve just been named a prequel. I have hope we’ll get around to these all Beth 😉

  18. Good call on waiting for all the books to come out for Dark Artifices- I hate waiting in between books. And I’m not a massive fan of Chaol either (still not) but I will say that Tower of Dawn was surprisingly fun! And Ringer was a great conclusion! Awesome list!!

  20. Oh, I agree with you with City of Fallen Angels and Tower of Dawn. I’ve been wanting to finish The Mortal Instruments series for ages, but I’m still stuck at the fourth book (I re-reas the first two last year), so I really hope this will be the year!

    I am a mood reader as well. Each month I only get through half of the books that I planned to read and end up picking the rest of the books on the fly! I think it is a good thing to read what we feel like, since we are more likely to enjoy it, right?

    1. Hi Sophie. 🙂 There are good and bad things about being mood readers. I’ve given up planning out what books I’ll be reading, I just pick up whatever I feel like now, and yeah definitely ends up being more enjoyable as well. 😀
