Looking Back at 2017: End of Year Recap

It’s the first day of 2018, so happy New Year everyone.

Has anyone made any New Year’s resolutions? I’ve made a few, some personal and some bookish, and I’m off to a good start but considering it’s only January 1st it would be bad if I wasn’t off to a good start.

As today is first day of 2018 it seems kind of fitting to post my recap for 2017. Overall I had a pretty good year, but more about that later. For me 2017 was filled with good books and personal achievements I never actually thought I would manage to do, and now I’m hoping for the same in 2018.

Books I Re-Read

Granted the first time I picked up Prodigy back in 2014 I didn’t manage to finish it, but considering I got through about 60% of the book before giving up I’m counting it as one I re-read this year.

prodigy

Genres I Read;

Of the 109 books I read this year most of them were fantasy releases (61 books), which probably doesn’t surprise many people given it’s my favourite genre.

Contemporary was a not-so-close second (19 books), and the remaining 29 books were a mixture of sci-fi, magical realism and dystopian releases.

Bests of 2017

When I write my reviews I split them into three sections and talk about the plot, the characters, and the setting; so for my best reads of 2017 I am going to pick the books with the best plot, the best characters, and the best world building.

Best Plot

Tarnished City by Vic James
Check out my review here.

I read Gilded Cage back in 2016 and the ending left me needing the next book in the trilogy. Tarnished City really takes the series to a whole new, much darker, level where there is so much more at stake for the characters.

I was hooked, terrified for Luke and rooting for Abi, as the story unfolded, and if I thought the ending for Gilded Cage was enough to have me desperate for the next book in the series it’s nothing compared to the ending for Tarnished City.

Tarnished City

Best Characters

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
Check out my review here.

I always comes across the best characters in contemporary stories, and when it comes to the best contemporary book I read last year there’s really no other choice but The Hate U Give.

It was the character who made this book for me. The Hate U Give is not just Starr and Khalil’s story, but the story of all the people surrounding them whose lives are affected by what happened to Khalil and Starr’s journey to find justice for her friend.

The Hate U Give

Best World Building

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor
Check out my review here.

Laini Taylor is a master of world building. When I read Daughter of Smoke and Bone I wanted to travel to Prague to experience the magic and wonder she wrote about, and it was the same when I read Strange the Dreamer.

At first Weep seems like nothing more than a fairytale, somewhere Lazlo could read about and research but never touch, but while the city itself is darker and more heartbreaking as Lazlo quickly discovers there is still magic to be found.

Strange the Dreamer

Best Book of 2017

When it comes to my overall best read of 2017 – the book that had an incredible plot I couldn’t step away from, amazingly developed characters I loved and rooted for, and a wonderful setting I could easily lose myself in – I couldn’t pick just one so I’ve chosen my top three;

In third place is The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty
Check out my review here.

I managed to snag an ARC at YALC last July and The City of Brass quickly became a surprise favourite of mine that I feel like I’ve already recommend to the world. Read this book, you won’t regret it.

In second place is Morning Star by Pierce Brown
Review to come in January

It took me ages to get around to Morning Star but now I’ve read it I don’t know why I didn’t pick it up sooner. There aren’t enough words to describe how much I loved this book, or how excited I now am for Iron Gold.

And in first place is A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab
Check out my review here.

I doubt anyone is surprised to see this book here. A Conjuring of Light was my most anticipated release of 2017 and V.E. Schwab more than lived up to my expectations. It was the perfect finale for my all-time favourite series.

Top Three Best Books of 2017

Best Author I Discovered in 2017

Adam Silvera

Looking back I didn’t discover that many authors in 2017 who weren’t debut authors, still Adam Silvera stands out from the rest. I read all his books this year and all three emotionally destroyed me, breaking my heart into a million pieces.

So far my favourite of his books is his most recent release, They Both Die at the End, but I can’t wait to see what he comes out with next. Already in the works he has a fantasy release for 2019, and this year What If It’s Us which he’s written with Becky Albertalli (is it too early to say this is in the running for my favourite contemporary book of 2018?).

Blogging Achievements

  • In February I posted my very first discussion. I was so scared of actually clicking on the Publish button, but the response from the community and my blogging friends made taking that leap worthwhile.
  • Also in February I received my first ever physical ARC from a publisher, and it was for a highly anticipated release of mine which is part of one of my all-time favourite series which just added to my excitement.

Two Year Blogiversary - The Song Rising

  • In March I unveiled my redesign for Reading Every Night, and I definitely think the before and after pictures show how far I’ve come.
  • Also in March I finally joined the world of Goodreads. I can’t say I’m as active on Goodreads as I am on WordPress but baby steps people, baby steps.
  • In July I started a new feature, Reading Around the World, which combines my love of travel with my love of reading.

Reading Around the World

  • In November I spoke about my writing and, for the first time ever, even posted snippets of my WIP on my blog.
  • And ending on possibly the highlight of my 2017 blogging year, in November I reached my two year blogiversary. For someone who didn’t even think they’d make it to their one year blogiversary this is probably the achievement I am the most proud of.

Personal Achievements

  • I got promoted at work, and I’ve even applied for another job at the end of last year so keep your fingers crossed for me.
  • I travelled to Krakow, Budapest and Vienna, and I’ve booked holidays to Romania, Dubai and Mauritius for this year so there’ll be plenty more travelling in the near future.

2017 Travels

  • I had an incredible weekend at YALC for the second year in a row, and outside of YALC I attended events where I met Stephanie Garber, Katherine Webber, Samantha Shannon and Sarah J. Maas.
  • I started writing again, thanks to the many bloggers out there who inspired me, and I took part in NaNoWriMo for the first time in years. I won NaNoWriMo as well.

Looking Forwards to 2018

I’ve already set my Goodreads Reading Challenge goal. This year I am going for 125 books, which I’m slightly nervous about because last year I only managed 109 books, and for the past few years I’ve only set my goal to 100. Still the idea is to stretch ourselves right? So fingers crossed I can manage it.

2018 Goodreads Reading Challenge

I will be launching a new feature in March. I haven’t worked out everything yet but it will essentially be me talking more about my WIP and around writing in general.

Finally, there are so many incredible books being released next year and so many I want to read, but there are also so so many books already released I need to get around to. So, my aim for 2018, is to try and get through as many of the below as possible.

2018 To-Read List

I can’t say when, I’m not psychic, but hopefully before 2018 is over you’ll have seen a review for all of these books, and many more, posted on my blog.

I hope everyone out there had an incredible 2017 filled with amazing books, because there were certainly enough of them released last year.

What was your favourite read of 2017, is there one solid winner for the year or do you have a top three like I do? What was your favourite new author you discovered, and what would you say is your best achievement of 2017? Let me know in the comments.

  1. Romania, Dubai and Mauritius? I’m so excited for you! 😄 Do you think you’ll add these places to your Reading Around the World feature? Your year sounds amazing, and I hope 2018 will be even more wonderful than 2017 for books and travel and everything else. Safe travels and happy reading! 😊

    1. I can’t wait, and yes I likely will add them to my feature. I’m not sure what books are set in Dubai and Mauritius but if there are any out there I will find them! 😀
Thanks so much, and yep I really am looking forwards to getting into 2018 more. I’m going to make this a good year I think.
Thanks so much, and I hope you have a brilliant 2018 filled with amazing books and even more amazing events and such too! 😀 ❤

  2. Absolutely wonderful post, Beth! You have certainly been through a lot of amazing books in 2017 and have accomplished so much blogging wise. I mean, those discussions posts have been golden since the first day you’ve started them! I hope 2018 will have you accomplish even bigger things, even more things too! Here’s to all the amazing books to be released and read! 😀 Thank you for being AWESOME, Beth!!! 😉

    1. Thanks so much Lashaan! 😀 Yeah 2017 was a pretty amazing year, and I’m hopeful for an even better 2018 for me and everyone else out there too. Ha, means I need to think of more things I can accomplish in 2018, but oh thanks so much. It means a lot to me you think that about my discussion posts. 😀
Yes definitely, there are so many amazing books I feel like 2018 is going to be epic! 🙂 ❤

  3. What a fantastic year, Beth! You read so many wonderful books and congrats again on reaching your second blogiversary and for all your other achievements. Traveling is always great fun and it’s such a great feeling to return to a neglected passion (i.e. writing). Strange the Dreamer certainly did have some strong world-building and why am I not surprised that ACOL is your number one pick? LOL. 125 books is quite a large goal but judging on some of the books included in your TBR and how fast you read, I’m sure you’ll achieve that easy!! Good luck achieving all your goals and let’s hope your 2018 proves to be an even more successful year of reading, blogging, and living for you 😀

    1. Thanks so much Azia, yeah overall I had a good 2017 and am hoping for a better 2018! 😀 Ha, yeah it definitely felt strange writing again, but a good strange because I loved it. I don’t think anyone would have been surprised to see A Conjuring of Light as my top pick, but I couldn’t just choose one because there were so many amazing books I read this year. 🙂
I’m off to a good start on my GR Reading Challenge so I’m hopeful I guess, that could change you never know.
Thanks so much, I really hope you have an incredible 2018 as well. Finger’s crossed it’ll be an epic year for the both of us. 🙂 ❤

  4. Sarah J. Maas was my favorite author this year. I’ve read five of her books so far, including the Court of Thorns and Roses trilogy and the first two books of the Throne of Glass series, and I can’t wait to read more. I am jealous that you met her at YALC this year! I haven’t met any famous authors yet, so I’m hoping to attend a cool book conference someday so I can cross that off my bucket list. Looking forward to your posts in 2018.

    1. Oh SJM is a brilliant author, I discovered her books the year before last (I think) and LOVED them. Meeting her was amazing and oh I really hope you manage to attending a book conference one day. They’re incredible places and the two years I’ve gone to YALC have been two of the top weekends of my life! 😀
      Thanks so much. 🙂 ❤

  5. I’m so happy that you started writing again this year, Beth!! That’s seriously an amazing achievement, and considering all the great things I’ve heard about your WIP, you’re an awesome writer. 😘 And oh, now I’m curious to see what your previous blog design looked like! It can’t look bad if your current design was something you designed, right? 😂

Oh yes, ACOL is definitely on my favorites of 2017 list as well!! And aagghh I’m so excited to read City of Brass (as I’ve told you so many times 😂)! And I 100% agree with The Hate U Give having amazing characters — everyone was so well fleshed-out and it was absolutely beautiful to read about Starr’s family dynamic and her growth.

It looks like you had an amazing 2017, but I hope you have an even more amazing 2018!! ❤

    1. Thanks so much May, yeah I think getting me back into writing again is one of the best things my blog has done for me. 🙂 Ha, I wouldn’t say my previous design was bad, it’s just kind of basic I guess. Either way I definitely prefer my current blog design! 😀
I don’t think there was any way ACOL wasn’t going to make my list this year, and I really can’t wait for you to read The City of Brass May, I hope you love it as much as I did. THUG is just one of those unforgettable stand-out contemporaries for so many reasons isn’t it?
Thanks so much May, I hope you have an incredible 2018 as well. 🙂 ❤

    1. Thanks so much. 🙂 Yeah Strange the Dreamer was a heavy read to get into but it was worth it in the end. I hope you love The City of Brass and yep I am kicking myself for not getting around to Morning Star sooner.
Thanks, I was thrilled about my first ARC, thrilled promotion and even more thrilled than either of those to win NaNo this year. 😀
      Thanks again. 🙂 ❤

  7. Happy new year, Beth! ❤
It sounds like you had such a good 2017, you read SO MANY books and I am not surprised to see that fantasy was your most-read genre. I am happy to see you read contemporaries as well, I will make you read more and more, now, haha 😛
The characters in THUG were so, so great, I can't wait to read more by Angie Thomas! And I need to read more of Adam Silvera's books, so far I only read More Happy Than Not 🙂
Wishing you all the best for 2018, and i'll keep my fingers crossed for that job, you're the best! ❤

    1. Thanks so much Marie! 😀 ❤ Yeah looking back I'm definitely classing this year as a success, and I wasn't really surprised to see fantasy as my most read genre either. Maybe one year that'll change but I'm not sure it'll be anytime soon. 🙂
Oh same here, I have her upcoming release on my to-read list and I know it's going to be just as incredible as THUG was. Definitely read more of Adam Silvera's books, he's pretty much one of my favourite YA contemporary authors now.
Thanks so so much Marie, ❤ I hope you have a brilliant 2018 as well! 😀 ❤

This really inspired me to keep track of my accomplishments and maybe next year I’ll have a 2018 recap 🙂 And yea, I’m on the same page with you about Goodreads.

    1. Thanks so much. 🙂 Yeah I really enjoy doing my monthly recaps so I had to do a yearly one as well. It’s a lot of fun looking back at books and just life in general I think. Oh definitely do, you’ll probably end up a little surprised by everything you can achieve in a year, I know I always am. 🙂
Ha, yeah it may have taken us a while but we got to Goodreads in the end right? 😀

  11. You seemed to have a great year! A.G. Howard was an author I am so glad I discovered this past year. I am currently reading her latest book, Roseblood. It is hard to pick on favorite book. A Court of Thorns and Roses series blew me away though. This has become one of my favorite series.

Happy New Year! Can’t wait to see what 2018 has in store for you! ☺️🎉

  12. Congrats my friend! it has been such a pleasure seeing your blogging journey & now your writing journey as well. I wish you only the best for 2018 & safe travels of course! Dubai! 😍😍😍 I cannot wait to see you photos. Many of the books on your TBR above are also on mine & I’m hoping to tackle most if not all. Almost time for Tarnished City here in the states but I might just break & buy the U.K. edition 😂😂😂 My best read of 2018 for Fantasy is The Bear and the Nightingale & The Hate U Give for contemporary…I just couldn’t choose btwn the two. Which means Katherine Arden & Angie Thomas are my 2 newly discovered authors that I’m no OBSESSED with! haha! everything they write, I will buy 💜

    1. Thanks so much Lilly! 😀 ❤ Yep my writing journey is only just beginning, there will be some more updates in the future as I try and tackle the second draft of my WIP. Oh Dubai should be amazing, I'm so excited for that holiday. 🙂
I really hope you manage to get around to them all, especially Tarnished City because wow that book was incredible. Yeah the UK editions are pretty gorgeous, I need to try and find those editions myself actually. My copy of The Bear and The Nightingale arrived today actually, so I should be able to get started on that one pretty soon, I can't wait, and yeah it's going to be hard for any other contemporary book to beat THUG isn't it? 😀 ❤

  13. Ah yes, THUG and Morning Star were fantastic (though I read Morning Star the month it came out, so it couldn’t count for 2017, unfortunately)! I absolutely love Adam Silvera, and I’m so excited for the fantasy book coming out and his collab with Becky (AHHH!).

Congratulations with all your blogging achievements, that sounds amazing! I hope I make it to my second year at the end of the year; that would be awesome! 😀

Ooh, I have Lord of Shadows, Stalking Jack The Ripper, The Diabolic, The Assassin’s Blade, and Tower of Dawn on my TBR list as well! I’m hoping to read some of them this year!

    1. I’m a little behind when it comes to Pierce Brown’s releases, but I guess that meant I have less time to wait for the release of Iron Gold so I’m not complaining! 🙂 Oh his collab with Becky Albertalli is going to be incredible, I love both their individual books so one written by the two of them? Guaranteed five star read for me.
Thanks so much Mikaela, Oh I’m sure you’ll make it to your second year, chances are it’ll come around quicker than you realise as well.
I’ll keep my fingers crossed you get through as many of them as possible, hopefully they’ll be books we both enjoy as well! 😀 ❤
