Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Favourite Books of 2017

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Favourite Books of 2017.

Choosing my top reads of this year was possibly one of the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make, and I didn’t even take the whole year into account. Back in June one of the Top Ten Tuesday themes was ‘Top Ten of the Best Books I’ve Read So Far in 2017’, so for this Top Ten Tuesday post I looked at the books I read between July and now. I had to make some cruel cuts, and incredible books like All the Crooked Saints, Clockwork Princess and Forest of a Thousand Lanterns were taken off my list to make way for the below ten.

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

This book was a surprise for me. It was a highly anticipated release for everyone it seems but I never jumped on the hype-bandwagon. Then I read The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue and realise why people were so excited for it. It’s my favourite kind of book; one with plenty of humour, an OTP-worthy romance between Monty and Percy, and lots of adventure.

A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares by Krystal Sutherland

I was surprised by this book as well, but in a very different way. When I first read the blurb for A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares I thought it would be a light-hearted and humorous-at-times story but what I got was so much more and so much deeper than that. Even now, months after finishing, the characters and their journey have stayed with me.

Tarnished City by Vic James

While I had my issues with Gilded Cage I was still really excited for the second book to be released, then I read Tarnished City and was completely blown away. Vic James takes the series to a whole new, much darker, level in the second book. There’s so much more at stake and I am both incredibly excited and incredibly nervous for what’s to come in the third book of the trilogy.

Invictus by Ryan Graudin

I am a massive fan of both the time travel sub genre, and Ryan Graudin as an author; so a time travel book written by Ryan Graudin was always going to be a win in my mind. I was lucky enough to get my hands on an ARC of Invictus at YALC, and of course the story more than lived up to my expectations. Invictus was a standalone but I’m still hoping for more from Farway and his crew.

Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff

After finishing Nevernight last year I couldn’t wait for the second book in the trilogy, now after finishing Godsgrave I am desperate for the third book. Like Tarnished City Godsgrave takes the series to a whole new level, and after that ending I would be willing to sell my soul to get my hands on a copy of the third book right this second.

The Language of Thorns: Midnight Tales and Dangerous Magic by Leigh Bardugo
Check out my review here.

Anything Leigh Bardugo writes goes on my to-read list, and anything she writes within the Grishaverse world goes to the very top (King of Scars anyone?). I’d already read three of the short stories in The Language of Thorns, but even re-reading them was an experience. This is such a beautiful book, magically written with gorgeous illustrations.

The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty

This was another new release I managed to snag an ARC of at YALC, and it was a book I didn’t know much about so I didn’t really have any expectations of it. I went into The City of Brass blind and was completely blown away by it. This is an incredible book, and if it wasn’t for A Conjuring of Light having been released in the same year I’d say this was the best read of 2017 for me.

Warcross by Marie Lu

Really I’d liked to have put all of Marie Lu’s books on here; I re-read the Legend trilogy, finally got through The Young Elites books, and picked up her newest release all in 2017. All her books are amazing but Warcross stands out the most, maybe because I’m still reeling over that ending and the fact that I have to wait until next year to find out what happens next.

They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera
Check out my review here.

Adam Silvera was one of the new authors I discovered this year and while his books completely break my heart they are incredible at the same time, or maybe they’re incredible because they break my heart. They Both Die at the End is my favourite of all his releases so far. I loved the characters, the story and the world but god that ending still hurts me.

Wild Beauty by Anna-Marie McLemore

When it comes to the magical realism genre there is no better author than Anna-Marie McLemore, at least in my opinion that is. After reading and falling in love with When the Moon Was Ours last year Wild Beauty was at the top of my most anticipated releases list for this year. It was well worth the wait, and the story inside is just as beautiful as the cover.
