Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Favourite Books of 2017

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Favourite Books of 2017.

Choosing my top reads of this year was possibly one of the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make, and I didn’t even take the whole year into account. Back in June one of the Top Ten Tuesday themes was ‘Top Ten of the Best Books I’ve Read So Far in 2017’, so for this Top Ten Tuesday post I looked at the books I read between July and now. I had to make some cruel cuts, and incredible books like All the Crooked Saints, Clockwork Princess and Forest of a Thousand Lanterns were taken off my list to make way for the below ten.

Top Ten Tuesday #88

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee
Check out my review here.

This book was a surprise for me. It was a highly anticipated release for everyone it seems but I never jumped on the hype-bandwagon. Then I read The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue and realise why people were so excited for it. It’s my favourite kind of book; one with plenty of humour, an OTP-worthy romance between Monty and Percy, and lots of adventure.

A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares by Krystal Sutherland
Check out my review here.

I was surprised by this book as well, but in a very different way. When I first read the blurb for A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares I thought it would be a light-hearted and humorous-at-times story but what I got was so much more and so much deeper than that. Even now, months after finishing, the characters and their journey have stayed with me.

Tarnished City by Vic James
Check out my review here.

While I had my issues with Gilded Cage I was still really excited for the second book to be released, then I read Tarnished City and was completely blown away. Vic James takes the series to a whole new, much darker, level in the second book. There’s so much more at stake and I am both incredibly excited and incredibly nervous for what’s to come in the third book of the trilogy.

Invictus by Ryan Graudin
Check out my review here.

I am a massive fan of both the time travel sub genre, and Ryan Graudin as an author; so a time travel book written by Ryan Graudin was always going to be a win in my mind. I was lucky enough to get my hands on an ARC of Invictus at YALC, and of course the story more than lived up to my expectations. Invictus was a standalone but I’m still hoping for more from Farway and his crew.

Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff
Check out my review here.

After finishing Nevernight last year I couldn’t wait for the second book in the trilogy, now after finishing Godsgrave I am desperate for the third book. Like Tarnished City Godsgrave takes the series to a whole new level, and after that ending I would be willing to sell my soul to get my hands on a copy of the third book right this second.

The Language of Thorns: Midnight Tales and Dangerous Magic by Leigh Bardugo
Check out my review here.

Anything Leigh Bardugo writes goes on my to-read list, and anything she writes within the Grishaverse world goes to the very top (King of Scars anyone?). I’d already read three of the short stories in The Language of Thorns, but even re-reading them was an experience. This is such a beautiful book, magically written with gorgeous illustrations.

The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty
Check out my review here.

This was another new release I managed to snag an ARC of at YALC, and it was a book I didn’t know much about so I didn’t really have any expectations of it. I went into The City of Brass blind and was completely blown away by it. This is an incredible book, and if it wasn’t for A Conjuring of Light having been released in the same year I’d say this was the best read of 2017 for me.

Warcross by Marie Lu
Check out my review here.

Really I’d liked to have put all of Marie Lu’s books on here; I re-read the Legend trilogy, finally got through The Young Elites books, and picked up her newest release all in 2017. All her books are amazing but Warcross stands out the most, maybe because I’m still reeling over that ending and the fact that I have to wait until next year to find out what happens next.

They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera
Check out my review here.

Adam Silvera was one of the new authors I discovered this year and while his books completely break my heart they are incredible at the same time, or maybe they’re incredible because they break my heart. They Both Die at the End is my favourite of all his releases so far. I loved the characters, the story and the world but god that ending still hurts me.

Wild Beauty by Anna-Marie McLemore
Check out my review here.

When it comes to the magical realism genre there is no better author than Anna-Marie McLemore, at least in my opinion that is. After reading and falling in love with When the Moon Was Ours last year Wild Beauty was at the top of my most anticipated releases list for this year. It was well worth the wait, and the story inside is just as beautiful as the cover.

So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what the best books you’ve read this year are.

  1. I’m right there with you on Gentleman’s Guide and Language of Thorns, my friend! Amazing books, the two of them 😀 Warcross was really good as well! It wasn’t my favorite this year, but, thankfully, it was another great book from Marie Lu. I didn’t get a chance to read any of the other ones, but if you loved them, then I’m sure I will as well! I’ve got They Both Die at the End, so I guess I’ll be starting with that one. Definitely got to buy the other ones, for sure 😀

    1. Oh The Gentleman’s Guide and Language of Thorns were incredible, then again with all the hype surrounding them I didn’t really expect anything else. 😀 At the moment Warcross is my favourite read by Marie Lu, and oh I really hope you enjoy the others Azia. They Both Die at the End is amazing but so so heartbreaking so have the tissues ready! 😀

  2. Forest of a Thousand Lanterns didn’t make the cut?!?!?! 😦 😦 😦 Even from me who hasn’t read it fell in love with it because of your review and the prospect of it!! Hahahahah I do understand how hard it must’ve been though. All the one’s you’ve picked here are hugely loved by sooo many!!! But her, December is not over, so maybe there’s another favourite to come. 😀 Great list, Beth.

    1. Yeah there were some harsh cuts that needed to be made! Unfortunately Forest of a Thousand Lanterns was one of the cut books, hopefully if you do read it you’ll fall in love with it even more. 😀
Yeah I’ve read so many books this year and there have been so many I’ve loved as well, but yeah there are probably more favourites still to come this year.
      Thanks Lashaan. 🙂

  3. Oh, I absolutely loved Warcross and LoT as well!! They’re from two of my favorite authors, so of course I’d love them ahaha. And I really enjoyed Gentleman’s Guide, but for some reason, a spark was missing from it to me??? It was so hilarious, like you said, and the ship was SOOO cute, but I don’t know…

I’m SO excited to read The City of Brass and Wild Beauty!! Those are some books that I asked for this Christmas, so I’m hoping to get them. Anna-Marie is definitely one of my favorite magical realism authors as well!

    Great post!

    1. They’re two incredible books, and yes given who they were written by did we really expect anything less than incredible! 🙂
Oh that’s a shame about The Gentleman’s Guide, but I’ve had books like that too. On the surface everything is there, but there’s still something missing you can never quite put your finger on.
Oh both of them are incredible May, I’ll keep my fingers crossed you get them both for Christmas then, and yes if Anna-Marie McLemore is one of yours favourite magical realism authors I’m sure you’ll love Wild Beauty! 🙂
Thanks so much May! 😀 ❤️

  4. Oh what a great list, Beth, and I am ashamed that I haven’t read SO many of these, but I certainly want to, even more knowing they are favorite of yours 🙂 I especially want to read that Adam Silvera book, Wild Beauty and City of Brass! ❤

    1. Thanks so much Marie! 🙂 Oh but I know the feeling, too many books and too little time right? Hopefully you’ll be able to get around to a lot of these in the new year, and hopefully you’ll love them as much as I did (especially The City of Brass which is one of my top favourites of the year!) 😀 ❤️

  5. ABSOLUTELY YES GO WARCROSS!!! It was such an amazing story and I cannot even wait for the next book! *ahem* excuse the fan girl moment there 😂
I’ve heard some mixed reviews about Invictus, but I do have it on my tbr and I am definitely looking forward to picking it up! 🙂
I’m trying to decide what my favourite books of the year are for my end of month post and it is such a difficult choice! Well done for cutting them down 😂😂

    1. That’s pretty much how I am when it comes to Warcross, still kind of in awe over that ending and still very very desperate for the next book in the series! 😀
I really loved Invictus, but granted I didn’t really read any reviews before picking it up. I hope it’s one you end up really enjoying Lauren, in my opinion it’s an incredible read. 🙂
There are just so many to choose from. I had trouble picking top ten books from the second half of the year, god knows how I’m going to pick just one or two from the whole year in general! 😀

      1. Me too! I recommend it every chance I get 😅
I’ve heard very mixed reviews, but I still really want to read it myself 🙂
I know right! I have 5 or 6 so far … I might just have to list them all 😅

  6. I loooved Warcross and They Both Die at the End!

The Gentleman’s Guide, A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares and Nevernight are on my TBR – haven’t gotten my hands on a copy of Godsgrave yet. Same for The Language of Thorns but I have yet to read the Grisha-trilogy before I start that one, haha. Awesome list!

    1. They’re both incredible books right, though granted incredible in very different ways! 🙂
Oh I hope you get around to them soon, and that you get your copy of Godsgrave soon as well. I take it you’re waiting for that to arrive before starting Nevernight. The Language of Thorns is incredible, but yeah I’d recommend reading the Grisha trilogy beforehand. I’m sure you’ll love it though. 🙂
      Thanks so much! 😀

      1. True!
I haven’t ordered Godsgrave yet – Book buying ban because I’ve been ordering way too many books, oops. But I’m sure I’ll order it straight away as soon as I read Nevernight. Some people also tell me that maybe I should wait until the release date of the third installment is near so that I won’t have to wait too long for that one, haha.
        You’re welcome!

      2. Oh well if you’re managing to stick to your book buying ban you’re doing better than I am when I’m on them. I can never seem to resist buying more books! 😀 And actually yeah you may be better off waiting until closer to the release of the third book, Godsgrave ends on a pretty epic cliffhanger! 🙂

      3. Haha, I’m kind of sticking to it? Kind of. I often give my bf loveydovey eyes hoping it’ll convince him to buy me some books – which sometimes works! Doesn’t count as breaking my book buying ban if I don’t pay for them myself, right? Haha.
Okaaay, then I’m definitely waiting a bit longer before picking up Nevernight! I know I’ll be wanting to order the sequel immediately and then read it and.. Nope. 😀

      4. Oh that definitely doesn’t count as breaking your book buying ban. If it’s not your money you’re spending but you’re still getting books that’s more of a brilliant loophole! 😀
That’s how I felt when I finished Nevernight, but I had to wait a year for the sequel, and I also felt that way once I finished Godsgrave and again I’m going to have to wait for ages for the third one. 🙂

  7. Really cool list! I’ve actually not read any of these- but Gentleman’s Guide, Warcross and Invictus are all on my tbr. I’m also really keen on They Both Die in the end (even/especially because you said it’s heart breaking) and Wild Beauty (I love magical realism 😀 )

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Thanks so much! 🙂 Oh in that case I’d highly recommend all the books on this list. The Gentleman’s Guide is hilarious, and both Invictus and Warcross are incredible reads I was hooked on from the beginning. 🙂
They Both Die at the End is in my opinion the best book Adam Silvera has written to date, and if you love magical realism I’d say Wild Beauty is a must read as well! 😀 ❤️

  8. I didn’t read any book on your list but I read a lot of reviews for them which sadly, didn’t make me want to read them but I really like the covers especially ‘wild beauty’.

    have a lovely day.

  9. It’s awesome that you had so many reads you loved that you had to make drastic cuts! I have started Invictus and love it so far! I also can’t wait to read They Both Die at the End.

Great list! Here’s to a great 2018 reading year!

    1. Oh I feel like it’s the same story every year. There are always so many books I love it’s such a struggle to narrow them down. I’m glad to hear you’re loving Invictus so far, and I really really hope you love They Both Die at the End. Personally I think it’s the best of Adam Silvera’s books. 🙂
Thanks so much, and yes definitely! 😀 ❤️
