Discussion Time: NaNoWriMo Update and Introducing my WIP

Instead of doing a normal discussion today I am going to use today to talk about NaNoWriMo and my current WIP. There may even be a few snippets at the end.

Spoiler alert, there are.

So if you’re not aware NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month, and for the whole of November people taking part try and write 50K words before the month is over. This is not my first year taking part, but it my first year taking part and blogging at the same time, and it’s also the first time I’ve written in a long while.

NaNoWriMo Update and Introducing my WIP

NaNoWriMo Update and Introducing my WIP

My goal for NaNo 2017 was to reach 50K words by the end of November, my goal was to try and stick on or above the target each day, and my goal was just to enjoy writing. So far all the latter two goals can be crossed off as completed, and I’m on track to actually exceed 50K by November 30th.

My best writing days are the weekends, the obvious reason being that I don’t have seven and a half hours of work competing for my time and I can dedicate the whole day to writing if I want. There have been a few days I couldn’t write as much as I wanted, and yesterday I didn’t write anything simply because I was procrastinating and really, at some point this month, it was bound to happen. Today though, I am back on track.

My WIP

I am using the post to talk a little about my WIP, and I’m going to admit to being very nervous about this because so far there is nothing about this project out in the world where people can see it.

What’s it called?

At the moment the name I am playing around with is Rise of the Phoenix, but that will change because I’m not happy with it.

One thing I am terrible with is names, I’m already 45K into my WIP and so many of my characters still don’t have names.

What’s it about?

I’m writing this story and I still can’t summarise it properly.

It follows six characters, which sounds like a lot but their stories all intertwine so there isn’t too much jumping around in the plot. They’re children of the Gods and after a massacre that killed so many of their kind fifty two years ago they’re struggling with what it means when Astraea, one of those victims, comes back from the dead.

Astraea is searching for vengeance for the fifty-one other demigods killed with her. Ziva is searching for power. Elias loses himself in his curse as he tries to find a way to live with the guilt. Calix struggles to deal with the burden his father’s realm places on him. Theo just wants to help Calix, and Rhian just wants to be left alone and to survive.

Who are the characters?

For a bit of fun I’m not going to tell you anything about the characters other than their names (which like the name of this story itself could change, but I’m more happy with the names of the characters than I am the name I’ve given my WIP) and what I’ve mentioned above. Instead I’m going to show you the aesthetics I created for them, so if you want you can tell me what you think of them.

AstraeaAstraea Aesthetic

ZivaZiva Aesthetic

EliasElias Aesthetic

CalixCalix Aesthetic

TheoTheo Aesthetic

RhianRhian Aesthetic

They aren’t in any particular order, other than the order they currently appear in my WIP.

What I’ve Learnt Taking Part in NaNo

Well, number one on the list is that I am a compulsive editor.

I know the whole point of NaNo is to get as many words onto paper as possible, to not worry about spelling and grammar mistakes or how rough what you write is because this is only a first draft, and you’ll fix all of that when it comes time to revise your project in December.

But that’s not me. I’m not going to say I could have wrote double, because I haven’t re-written every word I’ve wrote, but if I counted my editing along with my actual WIP I’d have an extra 10/20K words to add to my total for sure.

Number two is that I suck at planning.

Like, really really badly. Before starting NaNo this time around I had a plan for the month, I knew my characters and I knew what their journeys were going to be in this story. Then, on the very first day of writing, I added two new main characters and completely changed one of my previous main characters’ journeys.

Since then I’ve had to throw my original plan out the window as more new characters have been added (supporting characters rather than main characters thank god), and more of my main characters have gone off on weird and wonderful tangents compared to what I originally planned for them back in October.

And finally, number three, is that I really love writing. Honestly I don’t know why I ever stopped but now I’ve started again I can safely say the end of NaNo won’t be the end of me writing.

Granted I won’t keep writing at the same pace I have been this month, I’ll try and divide my focus more equally so I can dedicate the time needed to blogging again but I don’t want to forget how much fun I’ve had taking part in NaNo, writing again.

So be prepared for more posts from me next year about writing and about my WIP.

Snippets from my WIP

So please bear in mind that these are from the very first draft of my WIP, written during NaNo, so these snippets aren’t going to be great.

“You think now is the time for this conversation?” Rhian asked

“No, you’re absolutely right.” Astraea’s voice was heavy with sarcasm. “How about we continue after we’re dead? Once my father has us all in his realm I’m sure we’ll have plenty of time for this conversation. Shall I pencil it in for this side of eternity or the next?”

“You’re slightly over exaggerating Astraea.”

*

“Power.” Malach raised his eyebrows slightly, but when he said nothing Ziva continued. “I want to be able to stop running, to stop scrimping for secrets and information to save my life. I want a place at the table of the Gods.”

“Something like that won’t come cheap. Too many of my brothers and sister remember all too well what Calix did to one of our own. What you could do to your mother, Ziva, to achieve the power you so desperately want.”

“Which is why you will vouch for me.”

“Any why would I do that?”

“Because in return I will give you your daughter.”

*

“You told me to be as bad as like if I was sure I wouldn’t get caught.”

“You got caught by me you little shit,” Rhian said.

“And when I gave that advice I meant it to apply to the crews orders rather than my own,” Astraea continued off the back of Rhian’s admonishment. But at her words Rhian turned her dark eyes on Astraea.

“Yeah, about that,” she said. “I’m not sure how I feel about you telling your brother, a demigod I might add, to be as bad as he likes aboard my ship.”

“He’s eight, what’s the worst he could have done.”

“He’s a demigod, I’m thinking ‘the worst’ would have been pretty damn bad.”

Now Onto the Discussion Part of This Post:

Are you taking part in NaNo this year, how has it been going for you? Are you close to your goal, be it 50K or something different?

When it comes to writing are you a planner, a pantser like me, or something in between?

Have you talked about you WIP on you blog? If so leave me a link in the comments because I love reading about people’s writing.

Let me know in the comments below.

    1. Thanks so so much Lauren. 😀 That really does mean so much to me to hear that. I’ll be posting more snippets in the new year as I keep writing, and I will also keep that in mind for sure but there is still a long way for me to go with this WIP before it’s at that stage. 🙂
      Thanks! 😀 ❤️

    1. Yeah I like to think I am. I’d also like to be more of a planner but I guess it just isn’t for me when it comes to writing. 🙂 Thanks so much, I’m really glad you enjoyed this post and that you like my idea, aesthetics and snippets too. It means a lot to hear people’s positive thoughts on this. 🙂
      Thanks again. 😀

  1. Ah, your character aesthetics look so beautiful! I love the quote, If I cannot bend heaven, I’ll raise hell.
    And death doesn’t discriminate.
Any character who matches those two mottos has my attention.

I’m kind of an in-between planner, and just letting it happen. I get to know my characters, and i know where they end up. But the stuff in between, it sometimes just happens.

I’ve talked some about my WIP on my blog. But I kind of want to get it more established before I let the whole world see it. 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Elizabeth. 🙂 Yeah they’re both favourite quotes of mine actually, so I wanted to include them. Honestly I love quotes in general which is why I have at least one for all my aesthetics. 🙂
Ohh in-between planner is a good way to describe it, I know where I want all my characters to end up as well it’s just everything in between that’s getting away from me.
Sounds like a good plan, hopefully it won’t take too long for you to get it more established. 🙂

  2. Glad you’re back on track for NaNo and that it’s all going fairly well! Even though you’ve discovered that your a compulsive editor and “suck at planning” (you’ll find that many writers are, myself included) that you love writing above it all! Which is always the most important ❤

I'm in love with you character aesthetics!!!! I especially love Calix and Ziva's. And your WIP sounds really engaging. Definitely something I would probably pick up in a bookstore! Your snippets of dialogue have just the right amount of humor, menace, and personality in them 😀 I'd really love to see how it all turns out in the end.

    Good luck! 😀 ❤

    1. Oh yes I’ve loved taking part in NaNo, and honestly I’ve loved writing again so much it hasn’t been too hard to keep on track either. 🙂 Ha, I think compulsive editor and sucky planner are just two of my writer traits, but yeah like you said a love of writing is the most important and I definitely have that. 😀 ❤
Oh thanks so much Azia, I feel like Ziva's is my favourite character aesthetic but she's not my favourite character (at the moment it's switching between two!) and I'm really glad you like my concept and enjoyed my snippets, it means a lot to me to hear your positive thoughts on both. ❤
      Thanks so much! 😀 ❤

  3. I love the sound of your WIP!! ANDDDDD Astaea sounds so SARCASTIC I LOVE IT!!!! And your writing!! I love it, and yesssss our sharing it, because the thought of sharing it can be really daunting!!

And congratulations on getting so far into your NaNo!!!!!! You should be so proud!! And I’m so glad that you’ve found your love for writing again and will continue writing after NANO!

    1. Thanks so much Lu, and I think all my characters can be a little bit sarcastic but Astraea has my sense of humour which is very sarcastic! 😀
Thanks again, yeah now I’ve shared some snippets once I think it’ll be easier sharing more. 🙂 I am really proud of everything I got through in NaNo this month, it was the first time I reached 50K words so that is an achievement for me in and of itself. 🙂 ❤

  4. The amount of writing you’ve gotten out is great! Really, that’s a feat to be proud of in itself. But the writing seems to be pretty solid, from the little passages you shared, so you can be doubly proud of that!
I’m not really doing NaNoWriMo. I’m always writing, and always trying to do quite a bit of it. Ironically, November is one of the worst months of writing for me, due to a recurring family vacation.
But I’m definitely a planner. I’ve found I’ve got to create a plan and stick to it, because otherwise my characters run wild and before I know it I’m creating an out-of-control epic that gets completely out of hand! Characters can be feisty like that. 😛
I hope to see some more of this story! Keep it up!

    1. Thanks so much, and yes I am definitely proud of everything I’ve written this month. Granted it’s only a very rough first draft but it’s 50K words which is more than I’ve ever written in a month before. 😀
I suppose that’s a shame about NaNo, but it sounds like every month is NaNo for you and that’s even better. I’m hoping to keep writing every month once November is over as well, maybe not at the same pace but still something.
Ha, I’ve just let my characters run everywhere, but I can’t for the life of me stick to a plan I’ve discovered. So I guess this is just how writing is going to be for me. It’s fun I can say that for sure! 😀
      Thanks. 🙂

      1. Well, if you’re a pantser, just embrace it, I suppose! There are plenty of wonderful pantsers in the world. I think (though I’m not sure) that editing is a bit more complicated for pantsers, but maybe not even. I mean, editing is a real pain for everyone anyways, but so important, whether you’re a pantser or not!

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Ha, yeah it’s either embrace it or drive myself insane trying to stick to a plan my inspiration no longer wants to follow. 🙂
I haven’t even given editing a try yet, but I’ve heard it’s a pain for everyone so who knows. I already have a few ideas for my second draft. In fact I almost feel like I have so many new ideas it’ll be a completely different story!

      3. It was tough. My wife and Dad have been nagging me to resurrect the story and do the necessary heavy editing. I’m going to try it once I’m done with my current novel. It’s probably better than I thought it was when I finished. I just remember feeling like I’d used the word “looked” a billion times…. Haha, yep! Wasn’t ready to edit it yet, but I think it’s been enough time to try and salvage it.

        Liked by 1 person

      4. Oh there are words I feel like I’ve used a billion times, and words I know I’ve used more than that likely. 🙂 Guess it’s part of getting the first draft down on paper right? It’d be brilliant if you did manage to resurrect it, I’m sure it’s better than you thought, sometimes when you go back you realise things weren’t as bad as you make them out to be. 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      5. Yep, those words… 😛 I guess it isn’t that big of a problem, so long as the words don’t stick out uncomfortably to the reader!
I’m sure hoping that will be the case! If I do salvage it, I’m hoping to have it ready to publish before summer. We’ll see, I suppose!

  5. That is a phenomenal writing speed, Beth!!! 😮 Congratulations on all that you’ve accomplished so far!!!! At this rate, you could probably have a nice first draft of a full novel before the end of the month. 😉 I usually hear people complain about how impossible 50k seems, but it’s definitely nice to hear how successful it is for you!!! I also love the sound of your novel. The story sounds super fun and exciting. And those snippets are such a tease!! We want more!!! 😀 Keep up the awesome work, Beth. I’m not doing this whole NaNoWriMo thing since I already have so much on my plate with my own thesis… I’d probably have something planned out before writing up my story though. But along the way I’m 100% sure I’d change a lot of what I plan. I guess that’s a pretty common thing to hear huh? 😛 Thanks for sharing!!!

    1. Thanks so much Lashaan. 🙂
Well my plan is to have a really really rough beginning, and I definitely have that so far. I know the second draft will be harder because I’ll have to go back and make everything better but that’s a problem for the second draft! 😀
Oh I’ve had so much fun with NaNo this month, and that’s really helped me write so much as well.
Ha, I’ll be posting more snippets for sure. Now I’ve posted once it’ll be easier to make the leap and post more you know?
That actually happened to me the first time I took part in NaNo, I had something planned out but completely changed my mind. It happens, and oh I hope you do get to take part in NaNo one year Lashaan.
That’s all right, I’m glad you enjoyed this post. 😀

  6. I completely understand the “I tried to plan but oops!” aspect of writing… that’s very much me in a nutshell. I didn’t participate in NaNo this round, but I’ve started a new WIP and in the last month the whole plot has cartwheeled about seven times. Characters have been added, dropped, gender swapped, you name it. But that’s part of the adventure in a first draft!

It’s so lovely to hear that you’ve rediscovered your passion for writing. I hope that you continue to love it like crazy! ❤

    1. As much as I wish I could stick to a plan, I think for me part of the fun of writing is the ‘never knowing where my story will go’ aspect. I love discovering what my idea can become when I start writing it, and I think it would be strange if my draft stayed exactly the same as I planned it you know?
Thanks so much, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Right now I can’t remember how I ever lost my passion for writing. 🙂 ❤

  7. Wow, you have seriously been doing great! Amazing job! ❤ 😀
I am sadly not taking part in NaNoWriMo. I would have loved to do it, but November is one of the busiest university months for me and I wouldn't have the time to write. (Well write fiction that is, as I had to write some essays and stuff.) Hopefully I will be able to do it next year, we shall see! 🙂
Your story sounds very interesting and the snippets are amazing! You've seriously intrigued me with your story. Plus your character aesthetics are simply beautiful! ❤
    Great post Beth! 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Anna! 😀 ❤ I've had so much fun taking part this year so I think that's definitely helped me write as much as I have.
Oh that's a shame, although if you think you've written more than 50K words in the form of essays you could say you've technically taken part. 🙂 But I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that you'll be able to take part next year then. 😀
Thanks so much Anna. It really means so much to hear that, and yeah I think I spent more time on the aesthetics in October than I did researching my WIP for the start of NaNo. 😀
      Thanks. 🙂 ❤

It’s great that you found your writing mojo again and are having such a blast writing. I love your story’s idea and your aesthetics are so beautiful, so are your snippets. I have a feeling you are a fantastic writer and I can’t wait to hear more about your writing 🙂

    1. Hi Marie, oh thanks so much. I am having so much fun with NaNo, and I know when it comes to editing I’ll probably have less fun but at the moment I’m still just writing like crazy. 😀
Thanks so much, I’m really glad you’re interested in my story idea, and that you enjoyed the aesthetics and snippets. I’ll be posting more about my WIP in the future (now this first post is published it’s got to be easier to post more right?) so you’ll get to hear more about my writing. 🙂

  9. This is such a cool post! I love your WIP aesthetics and snippets; this sound soooo interesting.

I stopped doing NaNo when I realize it just wasn’t for me! Every single NaNo project I did ended up being trashed because it was utterly crappy and I couldn’t deal with going back and rehauling it entirely. This made me realize that I’m 100% a planner. With NaNo, the whole point is just to write even if you’re writing trash and have no idea where you’re going, which led to me…writing trash with no idea where I was going. It’s not that it was a total waste of time, but it just doubled the work for me.

Now, I don’t start any project unless I have a semi-completed chapter outline, with an ending!!! I also have come to realize that I’m the type of person who will edit as she writes. I know people say this interferes with the creative process, but it’s what’s always worked for me and it makes it so much easier for me to go back and edit!

I haven’t talked about any of my WIPs on my blog but after seeing this post I’m thinking I should!

    1. Thanks so much, I’m glad you enjoyed this post and my aesthetics and snippets too. 😀
Oh that’s a shame about NaNo not being for you. The few years before this one when I took part I wasn’t completely sold with what I was writing so I never got close to the 50K word goal, and even though I can’t really write trash that leads nowhere I can’t really plan because my ideas tend to run all over the place which I think balances it out a little. As long as you’re still writing that’s the most important part I think, even if you’re no longer taking part in NaNo.
I tried having a chapter by chapter outline but now I don’t recognize my plan because it’s got nothing in common to what I’ve actually written.
I’d say definitely talk about your WIP if it’s something you’ve been thinking about. I was really nervous posting this but it’s been great seeing other peoples NaNo updates on their WIPs so I wanted to contribute in a way. I’d love reading about yours if you ever do decide to post about it as well. 🙂

  10. Beth!!! This was an extremely exciting post… YAY details about your WIP!! I absolutely love those snippets and what they said about the character relationships! I’m intrigued and now I NEED to know even more about the story! Yhe aesthetics were gorgeous as well. ❤ (You are VERY good at them!) I feel like the marketing department will have a LOT to say about my book title so I'm not too worried about it… but I love all your character names! Isn't it so funny how things change so much as you write… I think that happens a lot when your allowing the characters to dictate the story! 😉

    1. Thanks so so much Dani. 🙂 I was so nervous about actually posting this so I’m really glad you enjoyed this post, and my snippets too. I’ll have to make sure the next snippets I post feature the other half of my characters because I realised I’ve posted nothing from my male main characters yet.
Thanks, I love aesthetics and actually feel like I spent more time on these than I did researching before November and NaNo began. 😀
Ohh, that’s a good thought, but I’m still gonna try and find something I’m happier with so I can call my WIP something more than ‘Untitled’.
My characters have dictated so much of this story, in fact after posting this I just had another tangent I wanted to add which has made about one quarter of what I’ve written so far of my WIP no longer accurate. The life of a writer right? 🙂

    1. Thanks so much. It means so much to me to hear that because I was so nervous about posting this. being that it was the first time talking about my WIP and posting my own writing. 🙂 Yeah I’m more settled on the main characters names than the name of my WIP, it’s just most of the supporting characters who need names now. 🙂
Thanks again, and there’ll definitely be more posts on my blog in the future about my WIP. 😀 ❤

  12. OMG I SCREAMED WHEN I SAW THIS POST. I’m so proud of you for sharing all these things about your writing, Beth, and even including a few of your own snippets!! 🎉 Your novel seems absolutely AMAZING — the plot sounds so interesting and I’m already in love with all of your characters! Those aesthetics are beautiful. 😍

I’m not much of a compulsive editor — everything is a mess right now and I know that if I attempt to fix it now, I’ll never get to 50K. But it’s great that you’ve edited out bits but still managed to stay on track! And hahaha I thought I was good at planning but this NaNo has proved me wrong. And I’m SO glad that you’ve fallen back in love with writing. 💕

YOUR SNIPPETS ARE AMAZING AND I CAN’T WAIT TO READ/HEAR MORE ABOUT YOUR WRITING!! 💖

    1. Yeah it took me most of the month to build up my courage to actually post this but I did it in the end! 😀 And now I’ve posted once it’s got to make it easier to talk about my WIP on my blog in the future right? At least that’s what I’m hoping. 🙂
Thanks so so much May, I really love this WIP which is what’s helped me stick with it for NaNo this year, so I’m glad there are other people out there who think it’s an interesting concept.
Well these are just our first drafts aren’t they? They’re supposed to be a little bit of a mess. I’m applying that to how I failed at planning for this WIP too. At least I know once NaNo is over I can re-research and re-write and just have a better more rounded draft two. 🙂
Thanks so so much May. 🙂 ❤ I will definitely be posting more on my WIP and there'll be more snippets too. 🙂

  13. Hello Beth!!!! I am SO excited to be reading about your WIP!! (I was wondering when we got to hear about it!) Absolutely love those snippets. The dialogue between the characters are intriguing- now I want to know even more about the story! Love the aesthetics as well. I think I will like Rhian and Ziva 🙂
I know what you mean: Even after I’ve finished 4 drafts of my previous WIP, I still have trouble explaining to people what the plot is about! How do we distill so many hours and days and weeks of hard work into just a few sentences?
Congrats on your word count! It’s looking great! 🙂 🙂 Glad to hear that you’ve rediscovered your love for writing, and that you will be writing more! I think it’s not a bad thing that your story has changed from what you initially planned- sometimes these changes make the story better, and it makes writing much more exciting as well. I am also a “plantser” 🙂 All the best for the final stretch of Nanowrimo ❤

    1. Hi Sophie, oh thanks so much and yeah I did leave it until pretty much the end of the month to update you all but I needed to build up my courage to actually post this update. 🙂 But now this first post is on my blog the next WIP update I do will be easier to post I’m sure.
Thanks so much, I feel like in the run up to NaNo I spent more time on the aesthetics than I did the research for my actual writing. 😀
Exactly, I find it hard to describe published books I’m reading to people but it’s ten hundred times harder to describe something I’m reading because I can’t just say to people ‘read the blurb’.
Thanks Sophie, I’ve had so so much fun with NaNo this month. I’ve really enjoyed writing and I love my WIP too which I think helps. I’m definitely going to be writing more and once NaNo is done I’m going to get some more research done and get started on draft two immediately. Personally I think the changes have made the story better, after posting this I thought of another change I want to make that adds more characters and makes another of my main characters journeys completely different to what I’ve written so far.
      Thanks again Sophie! 😀 ❤

      1. Yes it was quite scary to take the leap and write the first post about your WIP! But that is great that you’ve done it 🙂 I am looking forward to more updates!

Haha making aesthetics is super fun and addictive. When I made my first character aesthetic, I thought, “I’ll just make one today”. I ended up making aesthetics for all 5 of my characters that day :’)

I can feel the excitement you have about your WIP, and that’s awesome! That is great that you are already thinking of ways to edit your novel to make it better. I think the harder we work on our novel, the better it will be, and the better we will become as writers 🙂 All the best, Beth, and hope to hear more about your novel soon ❤

      2. There will definitely be more updates, now I’ve made that first leap I want to make plenty more leaps. 😀
I could spend hours on Pinterest finding the perfect images for all my aesthetics, and I could spend all day creating aesthetics as well. 🙂
Ha, yeah this has been an idea that had been floating around in my head for ages so it’s great to finally sit down and started physically writing it. I definitely agree with you there, the more research and the more drafts the better we become right?
        Thanks Sophie. 🙂 ❤
