The Mystery Blogger Award Part One

“Mystery Blogger Award” is an award for amazing bloggers with ingenious posts. Their blog not only captivates; it inspires and motivates. They are one of the best out there, and they deserve every recognition they get. This award is also for bloggers who find fun and inspiration in blogging; and they do it with so much love and passion.

I got a fair few nominations for The Mystery Blogger Award so I have done this tag in two parts. If you nominated me for this award and don’t see your questions here they’ll be in part two, along with my nominations. I was tagged by Lauren at Wonderless Reviews, Katherine at Fabled Haven, and Marie at Drizzle and Hurricane Books. Thanks so much for the tag everyone, I had a lot of fun with this one.

Three Things About Myself:

  1. I’ve never dyed my hair. This seems to surprise a lot of people but I like my natural colour and I know I could never be bothered with the maintenance that goes into dying hair.
  2. I can be really competitive. A lot of the time it’s over things you wouldn’t have thought someone could be competitive over.
  3. I am very much a creature of habit and I hate change. It doesn’t matter what kind it is. Even a positive change can take me longer than you’d think to get used to.

Lauren’s Questions:

  1. A series that you hope to start or finish this year?

Red Rising by Pierce Brown

This is actually one of my favourite series. The first book was a great read, once I got past the slow beginning that is, and the second was even better. After the way Golden Son ended I was desperate for the third book in the series, but when Morning Star was released I never picked it up.

Red Rising

  1. Current favourite song?

HOLD ME TIGHT OR DON’T by Fall Out Boy

So far all the songs Fall Out Boy have released from their upcoming album, M A  N   I    A, have been incredible. Before my answer for this question would have been The Last of the Real Ones, but then last week the released a new track and HOLD ME TIGHT OR DON’T became my new favourite song.

M A N I A

  1. ONE upcoming release that you could read right now if you had the chance?

Obsidio by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

Ever since I finished the second book in The Illuminae Files series I’ve been desperate for the third one, and the fact that it’s not being released until March 2018 just makes the wait seem all the more unbearable. Still I know this will be one book that’s worth the long wait.

Obsidio

  1. What was your most recent 5 star read?

Forest of a Thousand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao

Looking on Goodreads I noticed it’s been a while since I rated a book five stars, and despite reading some great series Forest of a Thousand Lanterns was the last book I thought was beyond incredible. I loved the story, the characters, the world, and I can’t wait to see where Dao takes the series in book two.

Forest of a Thousand Lanterns

  1. FUN/WEIRD Question: You’ve instantly taken the place of the main character in the book you’re currently reading/last read. How screwed are you?

Zenith by Sasha Alsberg and Lindsay Cummings

I’m going to say really really screwed. There are some insane challenges for Androma to face in the first book, but she’s been well trained and is so confident in her abilities that she’s able to face them all head on and come out on top. If I suddenly took her place in Zenith I’d fail at the first hurdle.

Zenith

Katherine’s Questions:

  1. If you could try one fictional food, what would it be?

Anything from The Night Circus. The descriptions of food there – flavoured with vanilla and honey, chocolate and cinnamon – sound mouth watering and incredibly yummy. Plus I’d have to buy the treats from the Night Circus so I’d probably be able to explore a little of the world too.

The Night Circus

  1. Let’s say that, for your major in university, you could select one book/series to study – this includes the characters, the world, its history, etc. What book/series would you choose?

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

This is only one of my all-time favourite series, but also part of one of my favourite sub genres, fairytale retellings. I’ve already been through three years of university once so I know the importance of studying something you love, and this series definitely counts.

The Lunar Chronicles

  1. Who is your ultimate fictional crush/friend crush (the character you would die to be best friends with)? Throughout the years, have you noticed that you have a ‘type’?

Cress
Cress by Marissa Meyer

Cress was my favourite character from The Lunar Chronicles series, and that was probably because I saw so much of myself in her. Granted I’ve never been trapped in a satellite orbiting the Earth, but I’m constantly daydreaming and I’d love to travel and see everything the world has to offer.

Cress

I wouldn’t say I have a ‘type’ of character, but I am drawn to the ones I see something of myself or my friends in. Stubborn but with a love of travel and adventure like my sister, or witty and sharp tongued but loyal to a fault like one of my friends.

  1. What is your favourite fictional friendship(s)? (Ex. the Golden Trio)

Blue, Gansey, Ronan, Adam and Noah
The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater

This has become my standard answer for this question, more so than the Golden Trio. I just love the friendship these characters have; they’re all very different, and some of them can be pretty stubborn about going their own way, but there’s still something drawing them together. Maybe it’s Glendower but maybe it’s something else.

The Raven Cycle

  1. FUN/WEIRD Question: Would you rather have the ability to read your favourite characters out of their books and into the real world, OR have the ability to read yourself into any fictional world?

Definitely definitely the ability to read myself into any fictional world. What I love most about the books I read, mainly fantasy books, is the world they’re set in, so any chance to explore those worlds full of magic, danger and adventure is a chance I would jump at.

Marie’s Questions:

  1. What are your goals for this year (reading, blogging, life, everything or anything you want to share)?

Honestly I don’t tend to set many goals when it comes to blogging. I like seeing where things take me so I guess as well as being a mood reader, I’m a mood blogger. Every year my main goals remain the same though; to complete my Goodreads Reading Challenge and reach my next blogiversary, and as I have succeeded in both for 2017 I’m already looking ahead to 2018.

  1. What’s your favourite TV show at the moment?

I don’t think I have one, actually I think I’m in a little bit of a TV slump at the moment. There are so many TV shows I need to start watching – Stranger Things, Riverdale, American Gods – and so many recent series I need catch up on – season five of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, season thirteen of Supernatural – but I’m just not motivated to start them.

The TV show I’m watching the most at the moment, so I guess you could call it my favourite, is NCIS.

NCIS

  1. What’s one place you’d love to visit, fictional or not?

There are so many places, both in the real world and in fictional ones, that I can’t choose only one so I’m going to cheat slightly and give you a list of both;

Dubai, Rio, Athens. Anywhere in India, Australia, Japan, Egypt, Vietnam – as long as I get to see the Han Son Doong cave. I’d also love to go back to Prague, Rome, Amsterdam, New York and San Francisco one day as well.

Vietnam

Places I Want to Go 2

Prague

The main fictional places are Red London, Velaris, Caraval, Luna, Weep, Camp Half-Blood, Les Cirque des Rêves, and of course Hogwarts.

  1. What do you like the most about blogging?

The community. This does seem like a cliché answer, I know I’ve used it plenty of times before, but that’s because it’s true. I started blogging so I’d have people to talk to about books and on WordPress I found an incredible community that allows me to do just that.

  1. FUN/WEIRD Question: Tell us an embarrassing blogging, or non-blogging story!

The main thing I can think of, non-blogging embarrassment here, is how my ability to not retain people’s names has caused some issues. It’s not even little mistakes we’re talking about here, but calling my friends boyfriend Seth when his name is Zack (or vice versa, I’m still not sure which is his name and which is the one my brain seems determined to call him), or calling my boss Colin instead of Simon. People just have to accept I’ll get their name wrong, really wrong, at one point or another.

  1. So many of your answers are ones I would give!! I love Red Rising and The Lunar Chronicles. And I am so hyped for M A N I A !! Hold Me Tight or Don’t is such a jam and I can’t wait to see what else is on their album.

    1. I’m currently re-reading the Red Rising series and it is incredible, and The Lunar Chronicles is always going to be an all-time fave of mine! 🙂
Oh same here, if the songs already released are any indication M A N I A is going to be amazing. Best album of the year for sure! 😀

  2. Ahh, loved reading your answers Beth ♥ I REALLY need to start the Red Rising series I’ve heard so many good things about it. ALSO YES OBSIDIO!!! I NEED IT!!!! I haven’t been completely feeling the new Fall Out Boy album, but I really enjoyed The Last Of The Real Ones!

    1. Thanks so much Lauren! Oh the Red Rising series is incredible, I’m re-reading it at the moment and it’s even better than I remembered it being! Obsidio is going to be AMAZING!!! And oh that’s a shame about Fall Out Boy but The Last of the Real Ones is my fave so far so at least that’s one you enjoyed too! 😀

  3. I’ve never dyed my hair either, cos yeah, it seems like effort! hehe I’m totally a creature of habit too 😉 Ah I loved the whole Red Rising series- I really hope you enjoy the end!! And I want Obsidio so badly!!! Cress was also my favourite and I related to her *so much*!! I love those pictures of all those places- I’m so keen to India, Japan, Vietnam and America one day! 1. Yeah why waste time dying hair when we could be reading books right? I can’t wait to get started on Morning Star, I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about it. 🙂 Obsidio is going to be amazing, I just know it, and oh I love Cress so much.
Oh I hope you make it to all those places one day, and all the other places you discover later you want to travel to. 🙂
God it’s so awkward when that happens isn’t it?
      Thanks so much. 🙂 ❤

  4. NCIS is my favorite!! I haven’t started the current season, though; I really need to get one that. And you have to read Morning Star! I just binged the entire Red Rising trilogy and loved it once I got past the first 100 pages of the first book.

    1. I haven’t seen the current season either, most times I prefer to re-watch the series that had Ziva in because they’re my favourites. 🙂
That was my feeling about Red Rising too, incredible book I just needed to get through the slow 100-page start. Ohh, and yeah I really want to get through Morning Star before the end of this year, before Iron Gold is released at the very latest! 😀

  5. Oh, I love your answers for this tag, Beth! The places that you want to visit are some of the places I want to travel to too one day, plus England! (I’m so in love with England ahaha.)

And YESSS I am so ready Obsidio! After all the plot twists of Illuminae and Gemina, I can’t wait to see what Jay and Amie do in Obsidio. And I’m super glad you 5-starred Forest of a Thousand Lanterns because I’m picking that one up soon and I’m super excited!!

    Great post!

    1. Thanks so much May. 🙂 Oh I hope you make it to England one day then, I may be biased because it’s my home but it’s an incredible place and I just know you’d love it over here.
Obsidio is going to be incredible, I know my expectations for it are really high but I also know that Jay an Amie are going to have written an incredible story to finish the series. I really hope you love Forest of a Thousand Lanterns in that case, I’ll be keeping an eye on your GR waiting for your rating for it! 😀
      Thanks so much. 🙂 ❤️

  6. GREAT answers, Beth! ❤ I am really eager to read Obsidio, even if… well, I'll admit it, I am REALLY nervous about reading it as well, given how crazy Gemina was, I can't help but be a little scared about it all.
I love that you mentioned The Raven Cycle, I love their friendship so, so much and I miss reading about this little gang a whole lot ❤

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thanks so much Marie! 😀 ❤ Oh see I would be nervous about Obsidio but I feel like it would be impossible for that book to ever disappoint me. The series just seems to get better and better so I feel like Obsidio will be the best of the lot.
Oh Blue and the Raven Boys are amazing, they're like my ultimate friendship group and I think their relationship was the best part of the series honestly. 🙂

  7. OBSIDIO!! I am so excited for obsidio it’s unreal. I also need to pick up the raven cycle and A Thousand Lanterns! I have also never dyed my hair, which earns me some face of incredulity and I’m just like 👀 I can’t be bothered and I like my natural colour 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Oh same here. The wait just feels too long and now I need to know how the story ends. I’d highly recommend both The Raven Cycle series and Forest of a Thousand Lanterns, they’re amazing though in very different ways! 😀
That is exactly the same reason for me, lack of care and love of my natural hair colour. 🙂 Why fix it if it isn’t broken right?

  8. Well said about studying what you love. That is definitely the key to success and happiness, at least when it comes to education! Also glad to hear Forest of a Thousand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao was so good. I’m not a big fan of that cover, but based on the blurb, I had the feeling that story would transport people to wonderful places! Pretty cool to hear that you watch NCIS so much! My mom watches it too, I used to watch and I think I saw every single episode of CSI, right until they changed some of the key characters. I did watch a couple of episodes of NCIS before though. Maybe I should jump back onto that boat and see what I’ve been missing out. 😀 Great answers, Beth!

    1. Yep, and I think it’s one of the reasons I’ve managed to stick with blogging so long (not the studying part but the doing what you love aspect of it all.) I’d have enjoyed school much more if I’d been learning all about The Lunar Chronicles. 😀
It’s a great book, and if you didn’t like the cover I’d say it’s much better than the cover would lead you to believe (I have to agree it’s not my favourite cover design ever!)
Oh I used to watch CSI too, but when they got rid of Gil Grissom I kind of lost interest, it just want the same anymore. I love NCIS, it’s kind of one of those shows I play in the background when there’s nothing else I want to watch but it’s brilliant in my opinion.
      Thanks so much Lashaan! 😀

  9. I’m definitely drawn to characters who have a sense of wanderlust as well — it’s wonderful when I see that from a character in a fantasy world because I as the reader get to follow them along on their journeys and read more about the world the author has created too 😊 And you really seem to love the Lunar Chronicles series! I have Winter on my shelf but it’s been so long since I’ve read the first three books. If I want to read Winter I’ll have to reread the first three to feel like I fully understand the story… and there are so many new books I haven’t read yet! Ah, the ever-growing TBR… 😆 I can totally understand why you picked The Lunar Chronicles as your first choice for studying! The world-building, the characters, the mix of fairy tale themes in the story — it’s perfect concoction to analyze and lose yourself in. 😋 I enjoyed reading your post!

    1. Oh it’s one of my favourite things about reading actually, exploring all these amazing worlds that I’d never get to visit otherwise (because they don’t exist). There’s nothing quite like it and it’s why world building is such an important aspect to me in all the books I pick up.
The Lunar Chronicles is actually one of my all-time favourite series. I’d say re-read the first three of its been a long time, that way you’ll get the full experience when you start Winter. 🙂 But I know the feeling because my TBR list is the same way. With so many amazing new books out there it’s hard to get around to the old ones.
Yes and there are so many books it feels like there is a never ending amount you could learn. Part of me hopes Marissa Meyer never stops writing the series but I know that’s not very realistic. 😀
Thanks so much Zoie, I’m really glad you enjoyed this post! 🙂 ❤️

  10. Congrats on being nominated several times for this award, Beth! Definitely well-deserved 😀 I’d love to start Red Rising. My buddy at work said I should read it and everyone else seems to love it, so I guess I should try picking it up some time haha. I can’t wait until Obsidio comes out! The last two books are probably my favorite sci-fi books in YA! And of course I’d eat anything from The Night Circus. I mean, who wouldn’t? Cress is adorable. She’s definitely the type of friend I can imagine myself hanging out with! I have yet to listen to Fallout Boy’s newest album and I love them so much, I can’t imagine why I haven’t listened to it already. Gotta get on that right away. I feel like I’m never disappointed with their music. Great post, Beth! ❤

    1. Thanks so much Azia! 🙂 ❤️ Oh I second your work buddies recommendation for Red Rising. It has a slow start but wow once it gets going it it an amazing series, really unputdownable. I’m hoping to have got through all three books before Iron Gold is released but I’m not sure how likely that actually is. Obsidio is going to be amazing, I feel like there’s no way it could be anything less than a five-star read for me. 🙂 The Night Circus is an ultimate book for me when it comes to food, and oh I just loved Cress’s character so much! 🙂
They’ve only released four songs so far, but they have been incredible songs. The second the album is out I am going to binge-listen to it non stop!
Thanks so much Azia! 😀 ❤️

  11. Congratulations for being nominated for this! Some fantastic questions and answers on here. I have just started the Raven Boys Quartet and I am loving it so far, it’s interesting that I constantly find comparisons to the Golden Trio so I definitely need to read this!

    1. Thanks so much. 😀 I loved answering these questions so I’m glad to hear you enjoyed reading my answers as well. 🙂
Oh in that case I hope you continue to love the series, it’s one of my favourites and the friendship between Blue, Gansey, Roman, Adam and Noah is probably the best part! 🙂

  12. Great answers for these questions Beth! I’ve never dyed my hair either! I like donated my hair and in order to do that, well it has to be virgin hair. I like having the option because once I dye my hair that option is no longer there!
I love your answer for what book you’d like to study in school; The Lunar Chronicles would be such a fun and exciting thing to learn and explore! 😀

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thanks so much Meghan. 🙂 Oh that’s a great reason to have never dyed your hair, better than mine which is just that I’d be too lazy to maintain it. 🙂
It really would right? And there are so many books so there’s probably plenty you could learn about that series as well. Either way I’d have enjoyed studying The Lunar Chronicles more than some of the subjects I did study in school. 😀
