Hocus Pocus Book Tag

Granted Halloween has been and gone, so I’m a little late posting this, but I couldn’t take part in the Hocus Pocus book tag without having seen Hocus Pocus. It was my Halloween movie pick for this year, and now I’ve seen it I feel I can actually publish this tag. I was tagged by Lilly at Lair of Books. Thanks so much for the tag Lilly, I had a lot of fun with this one so I hope you enjoy reading my answers just as much.

Dark Gifts series by Vic James

This answer may be cheating a little, because although the Dark Gifts series will be a trilogy the last book isn’t being released until 2018. Still so far I am in love with this series; the first book was good but the second completely blew me away and my hopes for the third are now sky high.

I feel like after I finish Bright Ruin this will be a series on par with Shades of Magic, The Lunar Chronicles, and other top all-time favourites of mine.

*Spoilers for 13 Minutes below*

Tasha
13 Minutes by Sarah Pinborough

Tasha is a terrifying character because she manages to manipulate the people in her life until they’re playing the parts she wants, and even planned, them too. She doesn’t feel remorse for her actions, or seem to have a conscience at all, all she wants is revenge.

Hocus Pocus Book Tag (4)

A Series of Unfortunate Events, Harry Potter, The Chronicles of Narnia, His Dark Materials there are so many classics to choose from but I’m going for;

Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan

Not only does this series attract children but also older readers. I only picked up the Percy Jackson books last year but it’s quickly become a series I love; full of characters I adore and a world I’m excited to explore more of. Like J.K. Rowling did with Harry Potter Rick Riordan has written stories that stand the test of time.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series

Hocus Pocus Book Tag (5)

Geekerella by Ashley Poston

This is a contemporary Cinderella retelling with a sci-fi convention instead of a royal ball and a food truck instead of a pumpkin carriage. Geekerella was a fun read that didn’t take itself too seriously, but at the same there was a great relationship developed between Elle and Darien.

Geekerella

Hocus Pocus Book Tag (6)

The Love Interest by Cale Dietrich

Yes this is the same book Lilly picked for this question, but it’s the only one I could think of as well so it ended up being my answer too.

With The Love Interest I feel like Cale Dietrich was too focused on creating a twist on the love triangle trope that he forgot to develop the characters and their relationships properly, and as a result the romance between Caden and Dylan was really weak.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

I’ll admit this is a cliché answer, but it’s cliché because it’s true. The Hate U Give is such an important read that focuses on the Black Lives Matter movement. We see the injustice and the hatred and the unfairness of it all through Starr’s eyes, and Angie Thomas has made her character so real.

The Hate U Give

Dark-Hunterverse series by Sherrilyn Kenyon

There are now nearly 30 books in the Dark-Hunterverse series but I stopped reading around book 20 because I just don’t have it in me to care about that many characters, especially when Sherrilyn Kenyon kept focusing on new side characters instead of the ones I want to see.

Quinn
Wesley James Ruined my Life by Jennifer Honeybourn

I feel like I’ve complained about Quinn’s character a fair bit recently, but god she just infuriated me so much. Her reasons for wanting revenge on Wesley are ridiculously petty, she’s selfish and single-minded in her quest for vengeance, and she never apologises for any of the horrible things she does.

They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera

This is a two part answer. Part one is that I want both Mateo and Rufus to be resurrected, they deserve to be happy and together and alive, and part two is that I would love to see more of the Death Cast and the world Adam Silvera has created, a world where you know the day you’ll die.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

I put this book on my TBR list before it was released, but then all I heard were mixed reviews and it took me years to finally pick Throne of Glass up. Granted this wasn’t a perfect book, it had its problems, but it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be.

The Loneliest Girl in the Universe by Lauren James

The Loneliest Girl in the Universe started out as a cute contemporary read set in space, with a sweet romance developing between Romy and J, but by the middle it had turned into a completely different story and by the end this book has me hooked.

The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare

There are plenty of cameos in Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunters books; Tessa Gray makes an appearance at the end of City of Glass and Magnus Bane shows up throughout The Infernal Devices series. However, the cameo I loved discovering the most is in City of Bones where two characters from Holly Blacks Modern Faerie Tales series appear, just for a second but a cameo all the same.

I’m not going to tag anyone given it’s now after Halloween, but as always if there’s anyone out there wants to take part consider yourself tagged. Just send me a link to your post in the comments so I can see what your answers are.

  1. I have a confession to make: I’ve never seen Hocus Pocus *cries in a corner* I’ve always wanted to and I keep promising myself that I’ll watch it every October, but I’ve never gotten around to it. Just tragic. Everyone seems to love it so much! Really gotta get around to watching it some day 😀

I really need to finish up the Percy Jackson series as well. I read the 1st book, but didn’t get around to reading the second book. I started so late that the writing seems too childish for me. But my friend mentioned the later books and spinoff series are a bit more mature. So, I guess I’ll keep reading to get there at least haha. Geekerella is definitely a silly, but cute and fun read! Throne of Glass and I have a love/hate relationship, but I enjoyed it regardless of its many faults so I guess that’s what counts haha. Plus the second book is amazing, so ToG is definitely worth the read! And yes! Love those cameo appearances in the Mortal Instruments. I got so excited when Holly’s characters showed up in Cassie’s books. A real treat 😀 Great post, Beth ❤

    1. Ha, I would worry too much because before this October I was in the same boat. Here’s hoping you manage to get around to it next October but if not, well, there’s nothing to say you have to watch it in October! 😀
Oh see I read the Percy Jackson series only last year and loved it, so maybe if you pick it up again you’ll feel the same way. I’ve only read the first series and The Heroes of Olympus but yeah it definitely feels like the writing gets more mature so hopefully that’ll help if you manage to make it through the first series. 🙂
Geekerella is now one of my feel-good reads, and yes in the end as long as you enjoyed ToG regardless of its faults that’s what counts. 🙂 I agree the series gets better after that first book.
A cameo like that was nothing I’d ever read before, I got really excited as well because I loved Holly Black’s series.
Thanks so much Azia! 🙂 ❤️

      1. True, true, I guess I don’t HAVE to watch it in October 😅 But I always remember it during Halloween time and never before. I’ll just have to make a note to myself to watch it soon so I don’t forget again!
I really hope so. I enjoyed the Percy Jackson movies, despite the extreme differences from the first book, so I’ll always be curious to see how the story actually goes. My two main goals after rereading TMI is to finally read Percy Jackson and HP so fingers crossed that I enjoy them both!

      2. It’s more atmospheric to watch it in October that’s for sure, but I guess if you really want to get around to it you shouldn’t let the month stop you. 🙂
I enjoyed the Percy Jackson movies too, but now I’ve read the books I’ve found I prefer them over the films. Ohh, I’ll keep my fingers tightly crossed for you then Azia, they’re two of my favourite series so I really do hope you love them as well. 😀 ❤️

  2. Agh, I heard really bad things about The Love Interest which I still have yet to read (but I’m not sure if I want to)! I was really hoping it’d be a good, refreshing read, but I don’t think it’ll be for me.

And I still really need to read The Loneliest Girl in the Universe!! It sounds SUPER good and I’ve heard great things and I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

    Great post!

    1. I think it’s a good book, but it wasn’t great and I hyped it up in my mind a lot so I was just let down when I finally got around to it. I feel like if you go in with lowered expectations you may end up enjoying it a little more, if you still want to read it that is.
The Loneliest Girl in the Universe is amazing, and a book I really didn’t expect. It went in a completely different direction but it was a direction I loved.
Thanks so much May! 🙂 ❤️

  3. OMYGOSH YOU WATCHED HOCUS POCUS!!! what did you think of it? * eeeeeeK* lol. LOVED your answers Beth! 30 books is one hell of a commitment, I commend you for reading 20 cuz that’s deeeep lol. Really need to read Geekerella & 13 Minutes. The Love Interest is the only book that fit this category haha! I didn’t even think of TMI for cameos & it’s infamous for just that reason lol. Ha! brilliant answer for book you’d resurrect cuz hell yea Bring back Matteo & Rufus! 🙂

    1. I LOVED it! 😀 Seriously I can’t believe I hadn’t seen it before but I’m looking into buying the DVD now so I can watch it again next Halloween (it maybe my new Halloween movie.)
Thanks so much. Yeah 20 was enough for me and I just thought enough was enough, especially when I have tons of other books on my to-read list still to get around to. Geekerella and 13 Minutes are both really good books, though in very different ways.
See for me TMI was the only book I could think of for cameos, I don’t tend to notice them in books unless someone bluntly points them out to me so I had to go for the infamous answer because it was the only one I could remember. 😀
Yep, I want a different, happier ending for them. But even if we can’t get that I’d settle for more from the Death Cast from Adam Silvera! 😀

      1. I have a Christmas tradition, guess it was about time I came up with a Halloween one as well. 🙂
Ha, yeah I suppose it could be seen as a little morbid. I just think it as wanting more from an interesting world created by an amazing author. 😀

  4. Fantastic answers, Beth! The Hate U Give might be a cliché answer, but in that case, it’s a really good answer ahah. I loved this book so much and it didn’t shy away from important issues and cruel things happening in today’s world, for sure. We need these kind of books. 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Marie. 😀 I suppose you could say it’s cliche for a reason, and that’s because it’s true. We definitely need more books like The Hate U Give, that focus on these important and real issues, and I think one of the reasons it was such an incredible read was because of that realness, like you said the author didn’t shy away from what was happening. She showed everything in her writing. 🙂

  5. 30 BOOKS!!!! Sherrilyn Kenyon must have loved that series a lot to keep it going for that long!! 😛 I’m even more impressed that you got through 20 of them!! Oh and that Dark Gifts series has a pretty cover art! The one I’m used to wasn’t… Great answers, Beth! Fun post. 😀

    1. Yeah, and after 30 books you can see why I’ve given up on the series. I enjoyed it at first but after a while everything needs to have a conclusion. 😀
The covers I used for the Dark Gifts series are the new to-be-released re-designed covers. When I get the series I’ll be getting those covers because they’re my favourite! 😀
      Thanks so much Lashaan. 🙂

    1. Yeah The Love Interest had such an incredible concept. I guess it was just really hyped up and the actual story couldn’t live up to our hopes. At least that was certainly the case for me.
13 Minutes is a great book, and if you pick it up I really hope you enjoy it as well. 😀

  6. Great answers Beth! I couldn’t agree more with your answer for a series that will never die! The Dark-Hunterverse has gone on for a very long time. I’m making it my mission to finish it, I think I have less than 10 books until I’m caught up! I believe I can do it! 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Meghan. 😀 Ha, yeah it’s the longest series I could think of and just the obvious answer because I don’t think it will ever end. You’re doing better than I am, determined to get to the end, and I believe you can do it as well. 😀 I’ve kind of just accepted there’ll never be an end and so I gave up. 🙂
