Hocus Pocus Book Tag

Granted Halloween has been and gone, so I’m a little late posting this, but I couldn’t take part in the Hocus Pocus book tag without having seen Hocus Pocus. It was my Halloween movie pick for this year, and now I’ve seen it I feel I can actually publish this tag. I was tagged by Lilly at Lair of Books. Thanks so much for the tag Lilly, I had a lot of fun with this one so I hope you enjoy reading my answers just as much.

Dark Gifts series by Vic James

This answer may be cheating a little, because although the Dark Gifts series will be a trilogy the last book isn’t being released until 2018. Still so far I am in love with this series; the first book was good but the second completely blew me away and my hopes for the third are now sky high.

I feel like after I finish Bright Ruin this will be a series on par with Shades of Magic, The Lunar Chronicles, and other top all-time favourites of mine.

Tasha
13 Minutes by Sarah Pinborough

Tasha is a terrifying character because she manages to manipulate the people in her life until they’re playing the parts she wants, and even planned, them too. She doesn’t feel remorse for her actions, or seem to have a conscience at all, all she wants is revenge.

A Series of Unfortunate Events, Harry Potter, The Chronicles of Narnia, His Dark Materials there are so many classics to choose from but I’m going for;

Percy Jackson and the Olympians series by Rick Riordan

Not only does this series attract children but also older readers. I only picked up the Percy Jackson books last year but it’s quickly become a series I love; full of characters I adore and a world I’m excited to explore more of. Like J.K. Rowling did with Harry Potter Rick Riordan has written stories that stand the test of time.

Geekerella by Ashley Poston

This is a contemporary Cinderella retelling with a sci-fi convention instead of a royal ball and a food truck instead of a pumpkin carriage. Geekerella was a fun read that didn’t take itself too seriously, but at the same there was a great relationship developed between Elle and Darien.

The Love Interest by Cale Dietrich

Yes this is the same book Lilly picked for this question, but it’s the only one I could think of as well so it ended up being my answer too.

With The Love Interest I feel like Cale Dietrich was too focused on creating a twist on the love triangle trope that he forgot to develop the characters and their relationships properly, and as a result the romance between Caden and Dylan was really weak.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

I’ll admit this is a cliché answer, but it’s cliché because it’s true. The Hate U Give is such an important read that focuses on the Black Lives Matter movement. We see the injustice and the hatred and the unfairness of it all through Starr’s eyes, and Angie Thomas has made her character so real.

Dark-Hunterverse series by Sherrilyn Kenyon

There are now nearly 30 books in the Dark-Hunterverse series but I stopped reading around book 20 because I just don’t have it in me to care about that many characters, especially when Sherrilyn Kenyon kept focusing on new side characters instead of the ones I want to see.

Quinn
Wesley James Ruined my Life by Jennifer Honeybourn

I feel like I’ve complained about Quinn’s character a fair bit recently, but god she just infuriated me so much. Her reasons for wanting revenge on Wesley are ridiculously petty, she’s selfish and single-minded in her quest for vengeance, and she never apologises for any of the horrible things she does.

They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera

This is a two part answer. Part one is that I want both Mateo and Rufus to be resurrected, they deserve to be happy and together and alive, and part two is that I would love to see more of the Death Cast and the world Adam Silvera has created, a world where you know the day you’ll die.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

I put this book on my TBR list before it was released, but then all I heard were mixed reviews and it took me years to finally pick Throne of Glass up. Granted this wasn’t a perfect book, it had its problems, but it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be.

The Loneliest Girl in the Universe by Lauren James

The Loneliest Girl in the Universe started out as a cute contemporary read set in space, with a sweet romance developing between Romy and J, but by the middle it had turned into a completely different story and by the end this book has me hooked.

The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare

There are plenty of cameos in Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunters books; Tessa Gray makes an appearance at the end of City of Glass and Magnus Bane shows up throughout The Infernal Devices series. However, the cameo I loved discovering the most is in City of Bones where two characters from Holly Blacks Modern Faerie Tales series appear, just for a second but a cameo all the same.
