Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Things Needed for a Perfect Halloween to Yourself

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is a Halloween freebie, so I picked Top Ten Things Needed for a Perfect Halloween to Yourself.

Happy Halloween everyone!

I’m not a massive fan of Halloween; partly because it’s more of an American thing than a British one and partly because I never went  trick-or-treating as a child. Still I love the atmosphere of October 31st, even if I choose to celebrate Halloween by reading, watching movies, and eating loads of chocolate that should really go to the trick-or-treaters who knock on the door.

My Recipe for a Perfect Halloween…

…A ‘Scary’ Book (or Four) to Curl up With

I’m a huge wimp, and I’ll be the first to admit it because everyone else who knows me well will back up that statement, so I’m never going to love reading horror books the way I do fantasy and I’m certainly never going to start a book filled with blood and guts, tension and jump-scares after dark.

When I say ‘scary’ I don’t mean a genuine horror story. For me the perfect Halloween read is something light-hearted, with plenty of humour and a touch of magic; something like My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows, or Carry On by Rainbow Rowell, or The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee.

The scariest I’ll go is something like There’s Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins, a book which reminded me of Scream, a film I consider to be a horror classic.

…A ‘Scary’ Film (or Four) to Watch Late at Night

Again you can probably guess that when I say ‘scary’ I don’t mean the one of the films from the Saw franchise. Incidentally I did see one of those films at the cinema, I watched maybe five minutes before putting on my iPod and hiding behind my hands because it was too much for me.

I mean a film like Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, with magic and adventure and Halloween feasts interrupted by a troll in the dungeon, or a film like Hocus Pocus, which I haven’t seen yet but which is my Halloween movie pick for 2017.

The scariest I’ll go is The Mummy, not the one with Tom Cruise, or Scream, which shouldn’t be a surprise after I mentioned There’s Someone Inside Your House.

…Candles

It’s not quite a pumpkin you’ve carved by hand, because let’s be honest who has the time, energy and patience for that, but it’s close enough right? You can head to Yankee Candle to buy some of their Halloween editions, or browse Etsy and see what bookish candles you can find.

In my opinion they’ll smell better than a pumpkin you’ve gutted and stuck a tealight in, even if they’re not quite as atmospheric.

…Treats

Because it’s not Halloween without chocolate.

Lock the door, turn off all the lights, and if you get any trick-or-treaters come calling pretend you’re not home. That way you don’t have to share all the chocolate.

    1. Yep, there’s more to Halloween than just scary books in my opinion. It’s all about creating the atmosphere and you need candles, movies and treats to do that! 😀
If you loved The Gentleman’s Guide you’ll love My Lady Jane, and yeah I’ve heard that about Hocus Pocus from some other people too.
Thanks for the link. I’ll definitely check out your TTT. 🙂

  1. This is so me too –> “When I say ‘scary’ I don’t mean a genuine horror story. For me the perfect Halloween read is something light-hearted, with plenty of humour and a touch of magic.”

I’m glad to know “My Lady Jane” falls into this category (have been meaning to read this one since it released – it sounds hilarious!) and am hoping Stephanie’s book (because I adore her contemporaries) isn’t TOO scary. 🙂

    Fun list!

    1. Yes, no one says Halloween has to be about being terrified out of your minds. For me Halloween is about fun and magic, and that’s what I want in my books and films.
My Lady Jane definitely falls into that category, and if that’s what you’re looking for then look not further. 😀 Well I didn’t think There’s Someone Inside Your House was too scary, but there may be a few scenes here and there you’ll have to skim read, just in case. 🙂
      Thanks. 😀

  2. Hahaahah I love the twist you brought into the perfect Halloween for you! I’ve went trick or treating a couple of times as a kid, and it’s quite fun when you’re with your friends at night going door to door. You meet with some really wonderful adults, and sometimes freaky ones too! 😮 It’s nice to hear that you still love the concept behind it and celebrate it in your own way, Beth! Happy Halloween! 😀

    1. Oh thanks so much Lashaan. 🙂 Yeah I think for my friends who went trick-or-treating as a child, or who have children of their own now, Halloween is a much bigger thing, but I missed out on that when I was younger and I don’t have kids so I don’t get a lot of the fuss surrounding the holiday. Still like you said I like to celebrate it in my own way, even if it’s just with a good film, a great book, and tons of chocolate! 😀
Thanks Lashaan, happy Halloween to you too. 🙂

    1. Well to be honest Halloween isn’t something we go crazy over here either. I kind of missed out on trick-or-treating as a child and don’t get a lot of the fuss over the night now, but I still like to do something to make it different from just another night.
Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed this post, and thanks for the link as well. I’ll definitely check out your TTT! 🙂

    1. Yes that’s exactly how I feel, plus it makes things more atmospheric when instead of normal lights you have a few candles to read by. I’m definitely going to buy some Halloween candles next year, but I’m more excited for Christmas candles this year. 😀
Thanks Lena, and thanks for the link as well. I’ll definitely check out your TTT! 🙂

  3. I love your ideas for Halloween, Beth! I’m not really a fan of scary books and such, so I really like your recommendations of fun books with a hint of magic. I still have to read My Lady Jane, ahah, maybe I should sometime soon 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Marie. 🙂 Yeah I’ve had some bad experiences with the horror genre that have put me off, these books and films are the scariest ones I can handle now. Fun with a hint of magic is my idea of a perfect Halloween book because it’s my idea of Halloween in a way.
Oh I’d recommend My Lady Jane Marie, it’s really funny and a great story as well. 😀 ❤️
