Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Unique Book Titles.
When it comes to books the main thing that draws me to them (other than who wrote it when it comes to authors like V.E. Schwab and Marissa Meyer) is the cover. If a book has a pretty cover chances are I’ll immediately pick it up so for this week’s Top Ten Tuesday theme rather than focus on unique titles, because I largely read fantasy so I have a lot of unique titles to choose from, I decided to focus on books where the title is the cover.
Warcross by Marie Lu
Like most people I was disappointed with the cover for Warcross, and if it hadn’t been for the fact that it was written by Marie Lu I don’t think I’d have picked this book up as quickly as I did once it was released. I think the physical book is prettier than the picture makes it seem, and the hardcover under the dust jacket is gorgeous, but I’m still not a massive fan.
Invictus by Ryan Graudin
The cover for Invictus doesn’t really give much clue as to what the book is about, and like with Warcross I feel like if this hadn’t been written by Ryan Graudin I wouldn’t have picked it up when I did after it was released. Still the longer I stare at it the more I seem to love it; and I definitely prefer the UK edition to the US one.
Wing Jones by Katherine Webber
For a contemporary book this isn’t a typical cover (when it comes to YA contemporaries I tend to think of covers like the ones Morgan Matson’s books have, or Kasie West’s) but I love how minimal it is and I love how the title is spelt using the shoelaces. Having read the book I think the cover fits the story really well.
Plus the physical copy has sprayed edges, which make Wing Jones another book that’s prettier than the picture makes it seem.
There’s Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins
It’s very rare that I read horror books, and honestly I’m not too sure what it was about There’s Someone Inside Your House that made me request it from NetGalley. One thing I can say for sure is that the cover is definitely eye-catching. It’s pretty much all about the title, and even from a distance it stands out from the rest.
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers
As well as having a unique title in and of itself I love the design for The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet. Maybe the title doesn’t jump out at you the way it does for There’s Someone Inside Your House, and maybe it’s not as minimalist as Wing Jones, but what I love about this book is how it seems as if the silhouette on the ground is looking up at the title.
Caraval by Stephanie Garber
When I first saw the cover for the UK edition of Caraval I admit I was a little disappointed, especially when compared to the US version but what made the UK edition of Caraval so special for me was the secret cover under the dust jacket. Like with Warcross and Wing Jones this is a book that is so much prettier in real life than in pictures.
Turtles All the Way Down by John Green
Asides from being written by John Green, who is one of those authors everyone has heard of even if you’ve never read any of their books, and asides from this being an incredibly hyped book I have no idea what Turtles All the Way Down is about. Is this book about turtles? Who knows because I don’t and the cover is giving nothing away.
I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson
I read this book back before I started getting into the YA contemporary genre, and despite how much I love the covers for both of Jandy Nelson’s books now, it was all the incredible reviews I’ll Give You the Sun had that made me pick it up. It was other bloggers opinions that drew me in in a way the cover hadn’t quite managed to.
Final Draft by Riley Redgate
I’ve yet to read anything by Riley Redgate, though all of her books are on my to-read list and one day I will get around to them, but I couldn’t resist adding Final Draft to my list this week. Like There’s Someone Inside Your House this is a cover that really jumps out at me, though in a more bright and bubbly way.
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
This is on my list this week for a different reason. Granted it a minimalist cover that focuses on the title more than anything else, but the reason I added The Hate U Give was because of the title itself. I love that it’s been stylised to spell THUG, and it took me ages (longer than I will ever admit) to realise why the author has spelt the title The Hate U Give rather than The Hate You Give.
So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what some of the most unique titles you’ve read are, or what books you’ve come across where the title is the cover.
Got to admit that The Hate U Give was pretty clever though hahaha I can’t imagine the number of people who still don’t know the subtleties of it! 😛

It really was, a great hidden meaning behind the title (or not so hidden but you know what I mean). Ha, I’ve always said I’m not the best when it comes to subtleties; either understanding them or the act of being subtle! 😀

I’m not a huge fan of the cover for There’s Someone Inside your House, but after reading it, I can definitely see why the cover is the way it is! And I love all the covers for caraval! It’s so pretty and magical 😍

Oh that’s a shame, but I guess in the end it’s the story inside we want to be amazing more than the cover on the outside (though ideally having both is great!)
Caraval probably goes down as one of my favourite covers ever. It’s just incredible! 😀

Oh this is such a fun twist for this prompt, Beth, I love it so much 🙂 Also, I’m so happy to see Final Draft here – you HAVE to read Riley Redgate’s books, they are all so, so good, really, and Final Draft sounds just as great 🙂 ❤

Thanks so much Marie, ❤ and oh I'm so glad you enjoyed this post as well. I've heard amazing things about Riley Redgate's books, I need to get around to them one day soon. I think it was your blog/GR profile I saw Final Draft on first actually, I read the blurb and knew I had to read it. 😀

Oh yay! This makes me so happy 😀 I can’t wait for you to read any of her books. She’s fantastic.

Yeah I’ve heard amazing things, and based on everything everyone’s said I feel like she’s bound to become a favourite author of mine as well. 🙂

Ooooh, really fun twist on this week’s post! I liked your choices. I also was pretty disappointed with the cover for Warcross. I’m really hoping that, whenever it gets a paperback release down the road, it’s something totally different.
Oh, and don’t feel bad – it took me a couple of months to figure out “The Hate U Give” = THUG, too. Immediately after I figured it out, I saw a photo of the UK paperback’s spine, and was like, “Ohhh, yep, there it is.”

Thanks so much Destiny. I’m really glad you enjoyed this post, and my twist on the topic. Yeah I’m interested to see the paperback edition of Warcross, I think it’s gotta be different from the hardcover edition and maybe it will have a prettier cover which would be a bonus in my opinion.
Well I can’t even say I figured it out for myself, it was my mum who noticed it first. It takes a while, sometimes I guess there are just hidden details it’s takes a while to actually see. 😀

I really hope so! I’m gonna be so bummed if it’s just the same cover, lmao. I would love for it to be either something that looks more game-related, or even maybe some fun art of Emika and her rainbow hair, or something. I dunno, there are lots of directions they could take it and most of them would be better than the hardback cover bahaha.

I feel like part of the draw of the hardcover was that it had a plain cover but when you took off the dust jacket it had a rainbow underneath (it actually does look more pretty in real life than in pictures) so they’ll have to do something different with the paperback because if won’t have that added detail. At least that’s my thoughts on it, we’ll just have to wait and see I guess. 🙂

I just started reading Turtles all the Way Down. I suspect the cover will make sense when/if you read it, too. I love the reference in the title, regardless. 🙂

Oh possibly, I usually find with covers once I’ve read the book the design makes more sense. It was definitely that case with Warcross when it came to the rainbow hardcover.
Thanks for the link, I’ll definitely check out your TTT. 🙂

My favourite from this list The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet! I can’t help picturing a tiny, pouting Pluto haha

Ha, it definitely fits doesn’t it? Pluto is a long way away, a small planet, and given we downgraded its planet status it’s probably angry at us! 😀

Totally agree with John Green new book LOL LIKE WHERE ARE THE TURTLES YALL

Exactly, just from the title I expect there to be turtles all the way through the story. Though I’m guessing there likely aren’t. 🙂

Hi Beth!
Love this collection of covers! I’ve heard good things about The Long Way to this Angry Planet and it is in my tbr. Have you read this book yet? 🙂

Hi Sophie. 🙂
Yeah there are some gorgeous covers here, and it just goes to show you don’t need much to make an eye-catching cover either.
Oh The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet is a brilliant book. Yeah I read it last year and loved it. It’s different to the other sci-fi books I’ve read so far but nonetheless amazing! I hope you enjoy it, though I’m sure you will. 🙂

I love these covers. The fonts are very eye-catching.

They are gorgeous, and yeah I feel when the cover is all about the title the font needs to stand out from the background. 🙂

I didn’t know that about The Hate You Give! (But then again it’s not a genre I normally read either.)

That probably explains why you were unaware of it then. 🙂 I don’t normally keep up to date on genres I don’t read.
Then again based on how long it took me to really get the title style for The Hate U Give I’m not good at keeping up to date on the genres I do read! 😀
