Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Books that Make Me Want to Bake

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Yummy Foods Mentioned in Books.

I adapted the theme a little this week. Instead of talking about books that feature yummy foods, I’m going to talk about the books I’ve read that make me want to bake.

Baking is one of my favourite things to do. A year and a half ago it seemed like I was baking all the time; I’d make gingerbread men and sugar cookies, a variety of cupcakes and muffins, cheesecakes and birthday cakes. Granted baking has fallen in the wayside a little as blogging takes up most of my time, but when I read books that feature the most mouth-watering descriptions of food I really want to try my hand at baking them so I can taste the food I’m reading about for myself.

Top Ten Tuesday #79

Heartless by Marissa Meyer

It’s this book, more than any other on this list, that makes me want to bake. It wasn’t just the description of the lemon tarts or the rosewater macaroons Cath made that inspired me, but her passion when she talked about baking or her dream of owning the best bakery in all of Hearts.

The Square Root of Summer by Harriet Reuter Hapgood

This is another book that features a character who’s a baker to inspire me. Thomas comes back into Gottie’s life one day and openings up her world once more; bring in life and colour and cinnamon muffins baked late at night when everyone else is asleep.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Every time I read The Night Circus I’m always inspired by the descriptions, not only of the world and the magic but of the food as well. Food you can buy at carnivals, festivals, or circus’ always tastes better than the same food brought and eaten at home. I think it’s because it’s not just the food you’re tasting, but the atmosphere and the magic of the place you’re at.

The Girl at Midnight by Melissa Grey

One of the best things about baking is eating what you make, and there’s a reason I stick to sweet things like cookies, cupcakes and cheesecakes. The Avicen race in The Girl at Midnight series have a sweet tooth, and so do I. Every time Echo visits the nest under New York city there’s some kind of sweet on hand she steals a handful of.

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han

Another character who’s a baker to add to this list (really this post could be called Top Ten Characters Who Bake and Inspire Me). However it’s not just Lara Jean’s love of baking that inspires me but how close she stays to her Korean roots and the way her father cooks her and her sisters’ Korean food.

My True Love Gave to Me: Twelve Winter Romances by Stephanie Perkins (Editor)

There’s something about Christmas in general that makes me want to bake. Gingerbread men and mince pies, Christmas puddings and yule logs, just mention the word ‘Christmas’ and I’m inspired. I read this book in December last year, and one of my favourite stories was Welcome To Christmas, CA featuring a baker and magically tasty gingerbread.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling

When I first read this book I loved the descriptions of the food at Hogwarts as much as Harry probably loved eating it. I wanted to go to Hogwarts myself and it wasn’t just because I wanted to learn magic; I wanted to eat Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans and Chocolate Frogs on the Hogwarts Express, to be a part of the feasts Hogwarts put on for Halloween and Christmas.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

You could say this book is similar to Heartless, given it was inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, but the reasons they make me want to start baking are very different ones. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is full of strange food and drink; from the Eat Me and Drink Me potions that make Alice shrink and grow to the Queen of Hearts jam tarts.

The Sin-Eater’s Daughter by Melinda Salisbury

I’ll admit this book seems like a strange pick for the topic; but as much as Twylla’s past as the Sin-Eater’s daughter shaped her journey in the first book, so did food play a part in her memories of her mother’s job. Every sin had a food attached to it that Twylla’s mother needed to eat to absolve the person of said sin, and any book with food automatically makes me want to bake.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by J.K. Rowling

So maybe this one is more of a movie that inspired me to bake than a book. Between Jacob’s dreams of owning his own bakery, Queenie’s magically made strudel, and at the very end Jacob’s creations inspired by the magic he witnessed, it definitely counts in my mind.

So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know what the books you’ve read are that inspire you to bake, or what books you’ve read that feature yummy foods in them.

  1. Totally agree with The Sin Eater’s Daughter! The concept is really interestin, even if the book itself didn’t catch my attention that much. I loved how Grey put food in her books, but I was so irritated by Echo attitute towards macarons. I love them and are extremly difficult to prepare.
Strangely, Heartless didn’t make me feel hungry, but that’s the fault of lemon tarts. Not my favorite at all.

    1. Oh that’s a shame about the book, but I can see what you mean. I enjoyed it but I feel The Sin-Eater’s Daughter could have gone the other way you know? I love macarons too, I’ve never tried making them but one day I want to.
I guess that’s probably why. I love lemon tarts so that book made me really hungry! 😀

  2. I’m soooo not a baker (tho I’d love to be) and more of an eater?? 😂 I definitely agree that HP has some GREAT foods. I actually got to taste some Butterbeer and eat a Chocolate Frog when I went to HP world last week! 😄

And YESSS. Hearing about Lara Jean’s concoctions make me so hungry ahahaha! All her cakes and cookies and treats… 😍😍 I’ll have to try some of the recipes included the books, haha! Great post!

    1. Well eating is part of baking so I guess you could say you’re halfway there. 🙂 Oh yeah I’ve tried some of the HP foods, not too sure about Butterbeer but I LOVED the chocolate frogs. I also tried the Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans, a bit hit and miss I guess. One of the bonuses of HP Worlds right? 😀
Yeah that could be fun, I may try and do the same thing one day. Kind of an interesting way of combining two of my hobbies; baking and reading. Thanks so much May! 😀 ❤

  3. Please, give me all Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland pastries, because I’d eat them all! I haven’t thought about this, but to be completely honest, both books make me want to jump inside them so I could eat non-stop every food that’s in them!

  4. Ohhh great choices for this week, Beth! I love the Lara Jean series so much, and I think part of the love come from all the baking, cakes and cookies that are happening ahah. Lara Jean makes me want to find the perfect cookie recipe myself just as well, I love how baking is such a good part of her. We so miss that in some books – not necessarily the baking, but that kind of passion shining through the story. BUT WE MISS FOOD TOO in some books ahah. The one book that made me really hungry as well, was The Wrath and The Dawn, with all the delicious food mentioned ahah 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Marie! 🙂 ❤️
Yeah Lara Jean is such an obvious choice for this list I’m almost ashamed of how long it took me to think of the series for this weeks theme! Food always makes books better in my opinion, and there was just the very best food (sweets and cookies) in the Lara Jean series.
I think there definitely needs to be more food in books, and like you said I’d love to see more characters like Lara Jean who have that passion that in then inspires you as well. 🙂
Oh yes The Wrath and the Dawn is a good pick, basically any book with food in makes me really hungry! 😀 ❤️

  5. I almost bought “My True Love Gave To Me” yesterday! But then I didn’t, because it isn’t Christmas quite yet. But… Now I might just have to order it anyway…

Great post btw! I love baking as well, but find I don’t do it enough because I can’t possibly eat all the goodies myself. Well. I could. But I probably shouldn’t 🙂

    1. Well you still have plenty of time between now and Christmas to buy it. I thought it was a really sweet anthology, and the perfect December/Christmas read too. 🙂
Thanks so much Nuria. Oh there’s so much to love about baking, and actually that’s a good point. I may have to start baking ASAP while I’m still living with people who can help me eat what I make! 😀

        Guess I’ll start from heartless.

In fact, that I’ve been reading Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll over and over again. Love it very much.

      2. Ahh computer issues, they never end do they? 🙂
Heartless is incredible, especially when it comes to the food descriptions and Cath’s passion for baking. Yeah Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is one of those books I read over and over again as well. 🙂 ❤️

I’ve not read heartless yet, can’t wait to start soon.

  6. As soon as I saw this post I thought To All the Boys That I Loved Before. All the cookies Lara Jean makes and the cupcakes and brownies 😍😍😍 I feel like everyday she was making something new and it made me wish that stress baking was a thing I do. How productive! That book also made me want to scrapbook haha because I feel like she spend a solid amount of time working on a scrapbook.

    1. It’s one of those books that just comes to mind immediately isn’t it? Once I thought of it it was an obvious choice for my list but it took me a little while to think of it in the first place. 🙂
Oh I completely get that. Given how stressed I get my house would never be without yummy home-baked treats! 🙂
Lara Jean just seems to be a pretty inspirational character all around doesn’t she? 😀

  7. Hello Beth! Just reading your post made me hungry haha 🙂 That’s awesome that you love to bake. I used to bake much more often but, like you, it’s hard to find time for it nowadays (with reading, blogging, writing, etc.)
When I saw the title of your post, I immediately thought of The Upside of Unrequited. In this book, Molly makes really delicious cookie dough 🙂 I have To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before on my shelf and I do want to read it soon!

    1. Thanks so much Sophie, I’m really glad you liked this list. Yeah baking is just one of the many things that falls in the wake of blogging. I am hoping to get back to it soon, and I hope you manage to find the time to as well. 🙂
Oh I haven’t read The Upside I Unrequited but you’ve just given me an extra reason to pick it up (like reading all the amazing reviews wasn’t reason enough!) I love cookie dough, and I hope you enjoy To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before too. 😀 ❤️

      1. Hope you enjoy The Upside! It’s really one of the sweetest and cutest novels I’ve read this year and I finished it in no time 🙂 hope you will find more time to bake as well!

  8. SUCH a good list. Cath’s love of baking in Heartless was one of my favourite things about the book itself! I literally walked away from that wanted to bake more than anything else. Well, maybe second to “I want to pig out on sweets ASAP.” but you get the idea. Actually, come to think of it, I love and agree with literally all of your choices on this list. Love it!

    1. Thanks so much Jessica. 🙂 Yeah when it comes to characters who bake Cath is one of the best in my opinion. Her love just made me love it more myself. Ahh see the “I want to pig out on sweets ASAP” desire is always at the front of my mind when it comes to books with food in them, so I totally get what you mean! 😀
      Thanks so much. 🙂 ❤️

  9. Hi Beth, what a yummy list! Of course Harry Potter and Lara Jean! Also Alice in Wonderland… I did not include this one but GAH the little cakes are so cute in this one… BUT it’s the Sin Eater’s Daughter that sounds TOTALLY intriguing! I thought it was on my TBR but it wasn’t… but I need to get to is soon!

I love top 10 Tuesday… Here is my post if you’re interested in my choices ❤ http://wp.me/p3LRfZ-6ur

    1. Thanks so much Dani! 🙂 Harry Potter is a must for this weeks TTT topic I think, and for me Alice in Wonderland was a must as well. Those little cakes sounded irresistibly yummy to the younger me. 😀
I feel like The Sin-Eater’s Daughter is an odd choice almost, but it had plenty of food so it was plenty inspiring for me. I hope you enjoy it as well.
Thanks Dani, and thanks for the link, I’ll definitely check out your TTT! 🙂 ❤️

  10. I had gone to a Geek Girl lunch, and I remember Melissa Grey talking about how much food there is in her book. Lara Jean made my list, because of the baking, but the Korean food was awesome too.
