Sixteen-year-old Starr lives in two worlds: the poor neighbourhood where she was born and raised and her posh high school in the suburbs. The uneasy balance between them is shattered when Starr is the only witness to the fatal shooting of her unarmed best friend, Khalil, by a police officer. Now what Starr says could destroy her community. It could also get her killed.

This is an incredibly powerful and emotional read. After it was released The Hate U Give seemed to be the book everyone was talking about, and while the chatter seems to have died down a little bit between now and then I feel like everyone who has picked this book up so far has loved it.

The Hate U Give tells us Starr’s story as much as it does Khalil’s. We see Starr’s journey through the shooting all the way to the grand jury’s decision and beyond. This is a story about justice and the lives that have been lost so far, it’s a story that is so important and so worth reading.

“Once upon a time there was a hazel-eyed boy with dimples. I called him Khalil. The world called him a thug.

He lived, but not nearly long enough, and for the rest of my life I’ll remember how he died.

Fairy tale? No. But I’m not giving up on a better ending.”

    1. Oh yay that’s great to hear Lauren. 😀 I am so glad you loved this, and I can certainly see why it’s one of your favourites because it’s one of mine as well. 🙂 The family dynamic is just incredible, and same here. Whatever Angie Thomas releases next is going to the top of my to-read list. 🙂

      3. I have a thing about hype though. I always actively avoid books until some of the hype dies down because I just get so sick of hearing about them everywhere. It motivates me to avoid them more than to actually read them.

        I’m a little bit the opposite when it comes to hype. The most excited the community is for a book the more excited I get, and then I have to read it ASAP.

  5. I listened to the audiobook a while back (the narrator does a good job!) Overall I loved the book- yes it was very emotional! I did feel like it was on the long side. Also part of me wondered if the police officer could have more personality, rather than just being “the bad guy”- on the other hand, if I were in Starr’s shoes, I would hate the police officer 100% as well.

Oh I’m glad you loved this book Sophie. 🙂 ❤ I can see where you're coming from regarding the police officer, I think considering this was told from Starr's POV the policeman was just the 'bad guy' because that's how she saw him, you know. It sounds like overall you enjoyed it right? Despite the few issues you had. In my opinion I feel The Hate U Give is just an important read for everyone. 🙂

      1. You are right in that the story is told through Starr’s point of view, and it is reasonable that Starr would never forgive the police officer for what he has done. And yes! Overall I did enjoy the book and I think that it is an important story as well 🙂

  8. I’ve had this book since April and still haven’t cracked it open. I’m not mentally prepared just yet LOL. But I’m so looking forward to it. I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews for this one. I know this is a book I MUST read sometime in my life. I’ll definitely try to read it before the year ends! Nice recommendation, Beth! I’m so glad it’s a book that you enjoyed 😀

    1. Oh it’s a brilliant book Kat, but yeah I get what you mean because there are plenty of incredible books on my TBR list I don’t have the capacity to read, and I’m not travelling at the moment. 🙂
      I’m sure when you get around to The Hate U Give you’ll find it was well worth the wait. 😀
