Over a year after her parents sent her away from Hawaii to live with her grandmother in landlocked Nebraska, Makani Young is still adjusting to her new life. She’s made a small group of close friends and even flirted with romance, but her past in Hawaii is still hard to forget. And then…one by one the students of her new high school begin to die in a series of gruesome murders. Makani doesn’t know who’s next on the list. Between this, and a secret scorching relationship with the school weirdo, this school year may turn out to be one to die for…literally.

There’s Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins will have you swooning with fear and romance, and is the perfect page-turner for fans of Scream Queens and I Know What You Did Last Summer.

My Thoughts On…

…The Plot

“That was when her brain processed the noise. The noise that had woken her up.
Ticking.
Haley’s blood chilled. She rolled over to face the nightstand. Her phone was gone, and in its place, right at eye level, was the egg timer. It went off.”

When Haley Whitehall is murdered, found dead and mutilated in her own home, it’s all anyone can talk about the next day at Makani’s school. Well, that and Ollie Larsson’s newly dyed pink hair. Everyone is swapping stories about what they think happened, rumours that become more outlandish with every retelling, but it’s only when a second student is found dead, in the school this time, that people start to genuinely fear for their own lives.

It seems like the killer is targeting Osborne High students, crossing them off their list one by one. Makani has no idea who is next, but with the killer targeting students from different cliques no one is safe, and as more bodies are found the police remain at a loss. Students are terrified; they travel everywhere in groups, too scared to be alone for longer than a few minutes. They’re not safe at school, not even safe at home from this killer who is able to enter their homes and who is brutally killing without any obvious motive or reason.

“Overnight every student had become a potential target. The story went national. Three murders had give Osborne a serial killer. And not just any serial killer, but the media’s favourite kind—someone who committed heinous acts on attractive teenagers.”

I couldn’t recommend this book for anyone faint of heart. The kills in There’s Someone Inside Your House are incredibly gruesome at times and if I’d been reading this in my house I’m not sure I would have been able to continue reading it without someone else around for support. The way the killer could enter any house, any location that was supposed to be safe, and hunt down their victims was really chilling. No one and nowhere was safe and you got a real sense of that as the story continued.

Normally horror books, the horror genre in general, isn’t my thing, but I couldn’t get enough of There’s Someone Inside Your House. I came up with theory after theory as to who the killer could be but I wasn’t close, in fact it was embarrassing how far off the mark I realised I was when the killer was finally revealed. The only reason There’s Someone Inside Your House wasn’t a five star read for me was because I felt the ending felt a little too abrupt. It wrapped everything up, but I was surprised by where in the story it ended because it felt like there should have been a little more to close off the book and Makani’s story.

…The Characters

“But Makani’s banishment to Osborne wasn’t just because of her own unspeakable mistake. Grandma Young had also done something bad.”

Makani moved to Nebraska to stay with her grandmother as a form of exile. She is hiding a dark secret about her past which she is terrified of anyone discovering, and when the killings become more frequent she fears what it could mean for her if the police or her fellow students find out the real reason she left Hawaii. I thought Makani was an incredibly developed character, and as much as There’s Someone Inside Your House is a horror story it’s also a contemporary one as we follow Makani throughout.

Even before what happened in Hawaii forced her to move Makani wasn’t close to her parents. They’re more concerned with themselves and their upcoming divorce than they are their only child. As more and more of Makani’s fellow students are targeted, as the population of Osborne High lives in fear, her parents still can’t look past their own issues to feel even a little worried over their daughter’s safety. Makani’s relationship with her grandmother was a little closer, but in a way they’re both being punished; Makani having moved in to keep an eye on her grandmother whose sleepwalking episodes have been getting worse and worse.

“Darby and Alex never purposefully treated Makani like a charity case, but she was still the intruder on their decade-long best friendship.”

Despite having two close friends at school, Darby and Alex, Makani often feels a little left out, on the outside of their duo. Darby and Alex have been friends forever, the side effects of growing up in a small town where everyone knows everyone else from birth until death. There are a lot of inside jokes and discussions about the past that Makani is left out on, but more than that when the murders start increasing there are times when Alex and Darby reach for each other for support and comfort before they reach for Makani.

“For the first time, Makani realised that Ollie’s appearance and demeanour weren’t merely acts of rebellion. They were armour for his shyness.”

Ollie is the loner at Osborne High. There’s no one who really knows him and as such he becomes the subject of a lot of rumours; most are harmless rumours that come with high school, students filling in the blanks with whatever information they think they overheard, but as the murders continue the rumours become more sinister. During the summer Makani and Ollie had a relationship, but it fizzled when they returned to school thanks to miscommunication on both their parts. Makani has always liked Ollie, she sees something in him no one else seems to that makes her want to reach out for him, defend him when no one else does and stand up for him even to her best friends.

It was that I’d seen this book compared to Scream that drew me to There’s Someone Inside Your House. I was hooked from the very first page, terrified for every character we were introduced to because I never knew what would happen next and who would be targeted next, but I had a lot of fun trying to guess where Stephanie Perkins would take the story.

There’s Someone Inside Your House was very different to Perkin’s Anna and the French Kiss, but the fact that I loved both just goes to show what a talented author she is that she can write attention-grabbing stories across a variety of genres.

What did you think of There’s Someone Inside Your House? Was it a favourite of yours or could you just not get into the story? Let me know.

  1. See, I can’t read scary stories (sorry I’m behind on my blog hopping), so I avoid them and always think I’ll read them later. I used to love Stephen King but now I just can’t handle the suspense anymore! 😂

    1. That’s all right, and yeah that’s normally how I feel about scary stories as well. 🙂 This was one I picked up just because I loved Stephanie Perkins first series and I saw it compared to Scream which is one of those rare scary movies I actually enjoy! 😀

  2. I’ve been wanting to read this story since seeing it on NetGalley a couple months ago! I love the plot. It reminds me of one of my favorite slasher/home invasion movies “When A Stranger Calls.” I’m glad the characters are well developed and the mystery \/chilling aspect is executed well enough, too! That’s mostly what I’d be looking for in a book like this one. This definitely sounds like a book I would enjoy! Nice review, Beth! I’m happy you enjoyed it 😀

    1. Oh as soon as I saw it on NetGalley I just couldn’t resist, and it was a great book. The book did remind me of the Scream movies, well the one Scream movie I’ve actually seen. The characters were great, but for me the chilling aspects and the mystery behind the murder was what I enjoyed most. If that’s what you’re looking for you’re going to be very happy with this book Azia.
      Thanks so much! 😀 ❤

      1. I love Scream, the TV show too, so it should be something that entertains me 😀 I’m really hoping to love it, but if you enjoyed it, then I’m certain I will too!

      2. LOL, it’s actually really entertaining! Really interesting characters and plot development, but the killer is really predictable in the first season and even more so in the second. But I think that might be intentional. Still, I’d recommend it!

      3. Hmm, see if it was intentional that could mean there’s an epic twist coming that will completely blow you away. I’ll try and get around to it, but there are so so many TV shows I still need to watch it won’t be anytime soon I can tell you that much. 🙂

      4. Unfortunately, no. The show was cancelled after the second season so it didn’t really build up to anything substantial. Although, I discovered it will be renewed and completely rebooted, which sucks because there will be an all new cast with a completely new story line. Needless to say, I’m not interested in starting over haha. But I’d still recommend the first two original seasons if you ever have the time (or motivation) to watch it!

      5. Oh that is a shame. 😦 I always hate it when shows are cancelled kind of mid-storyline you know? You never get any real closure in terms of the story of the characters. Maybe the reboot will be good, or even better. I take it you’ll check it out given you enjoyed the first version of it?
I’ll definitely keep it in my mind, my TV to-watch list is becoming as long as my book to-read list! 😀

        Liked by 1 person

      6. Yeah, lack of closure is the worst 😦 And yeah, though I’ll be skeptical, I’ll still take a look at the Scream reboot. I just hope it’s as good, or even better!
I’ve been working on my to-watch list recently. Finished 3 shows and finishing up one (maybe 2) sometime this weekend! I’m on a roll haha. Which shows are on your list?

        Liked by 1 person

      7. I’ll keep my fingers crossed it is even better, and that it gets a conclusion as well because if one series isn’t being completed you want the reboot to at the very least.
Ha, see I’m just re-watching old movies so my to-watch list is still insane. 😀
Let’s see there’s Stranger Things and Riverdale. My sister has also recommend Hemlock Grove so I’ll be checking that out. I need to catch up on Supernatural, I’m about half a season behind on that, and the latest season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine which I haven’t started.
There are probably loads but those are the main ones I can think of off the top of my head. 🙂

      8. Stranger Things is so much fun. If you’re a fan of The Goonies and ET, then it might be even more entertaining. Riverdale is surprisingly addictive. I devoured the first season on Netflix. I gotta start watching the second season soon. And I watched an episode or two of Hemlock Grove. It’s very strange and unique. It didn’t hold my interest, but I hope it does for you! I haven’t had a chance to start Supernatural just yet, but I hear so many great things about it. And Brooklyn Nine-Nine is hilarious. I have to catch up on the last two seasons! Great show 😀 You’re to-watch list is fire 😉

      9. So many people have been recommending Strange Things to me, I’m going to try and get around to it soon but I doubt soon will mean anytime this year. Riverdale is lower on my list but one day I’ll get around to it. 🙂 My sister recommended Hemlock Grove and she knows what kind of shows I normally watch so my hopes are high-ish for that.
Supernatural is long, you’ll need to dedicate a lot of time for that show when you start it Azia, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine is one of my all-time faves. It’s just incredible so I’m not sure why I haven’t gotten around to it yet to be honest! 🙂

  3. This is definitely a nice surprise on your blog hahah I didn’t expect to see something so dark being reviewed! And it sounds like the author did a wonderful job exploring the genre and in telling this story in particular. Great review!! 😀

  4. Great review, I’m glad you liked it! I don’t really tend to read horror books, so I’m not sure I’ll pick this up, but we’ll see. I loved Anna, Lola and Isla though 🙂

    1. Thanks so much. Yeah I’m not a massive fan of the horror genre either, in all my years reading this is only the second horror book I’ve actually read! Well if you do decide to pick this one up I hope you like it, and yeah it was after reading Perkin’s Anna and the French Kiss series that I decided to pick up There’s Someone Inside Your House. 🙂

  5. Lovely review, Beth! I’m not really a fan of horror books – I think the closest thing I have read to horror are in The Mara Dyer series, I enjoyed it, but…I wouldn’t read horror books all the time, I think – but! I’m super curious to see what the author can do in this genre. I loved her contemporary series, Anna and the French Kiss and, if I’ve read some mixed reviews about this book, I’m still a bit curious. So glad you enjoyed it! 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Marie. 🙂 ❤ I've never been a massive fan of horror but the two books I've read from the genre have been really good. I guess I'm better with horror books than I am horror films. 😀
See that's the reason I requested this when I saw it on NetGalley, after Perkin's Anna and the French Kiss series I was interested in reading more of her books, and I guess it forced me to branch out a little into a new genre. I'd say if you're curious go for it. Hopefully this will be one you enjoy as much as I did. 🙂 ❤

    1. I thought it was really good, and I don’t normally read horror because I’m a massive wimp when it comes to things like that. 🙂
I hope you enjoy this one Kirsty, it’s definitely a good book for around Halloween, appropriate for the season. 😀
      Thanks so much. 🙂

  6. I’ve been really trying to brave up to this one since horror isn’t my cup of tea & you’ve just convinced me to give it a go Beth! I think the fact that it kept you drawing theories & took you by surprise in the end is awesome 🙌🏼 I won a twitter giveaway for a stack of arcs and this one was in the mix. Def Reading, it’ll be my first Stephanie Perkins book. Loved your review, it was just the right amount of horror & intrigue 🙃

    1. Horror really isn’t normally my cup of tea either, but I actually really enjoyed this one. I did have so many theories about who the killer was and who would be targeted next and why certain people were being targeted. It was a strangely addictive read. 😀
Oh that’s great Lilly, in that case I hope you enjoy this book. There’s Someone Inside Your House is so different from Stephanie Perkins other books but I thought it was a great read. 🙂
