The New York Times “By the Book” Tag

I may not be a fan, or a reader, of the New York Times but I love the city of New York so that’s close enough right? I ask this having no clue what the New York Times is, other than a newspaper I’m guessing. I was tagged by Jessica at Pore Over the Pages. Thanks so much for the tag Jessica, I had a lot of fun with this one so I hope you enjoy reading my answers just as much.

What book is on your nightstand now?

I don’t actually own a nightstand. In fact the closest thing I have to nightstand in my room is a small bookshelf by my bed so there are way too many books on my “nightstand” for me to list in this tag.

If I did have a nightstand however, the book on it would be the book I’m currently reading which is Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff. So far I am loving this book, it’s amazing and I have no idea how I’m going to organise my thoughts into a coherent review but that’s a worry for another day after I’ve finished reading.

Godsgrave

What was the last truly great book you’ve read?

Moonrise by Sarah Crossan

This was an incredible read. Moonrise is the first poetry book I’ve picked up and at first I wasn’t too sure how a story could be told through poetry alone. Turns out I didn’t need to worry because I was so moved by Sarah Crossan’s way of writing. Joe’s story was beautiful, emotional, moving, and after finishing it I need to read more of Sarah Crossan’s books.

If you could meet any writer – dead or alive – who would it be? And what would you want to know?

This is going to seem like a really clichéd answer but it is J.K. Rowling.

I know, I know she’s the author most people want to meet, and I highly doubt I’ll ever get a chance to meet her, but I’d love to speak to her about Harry Potter. It’s the series that kick-started my love of reading, the series I re-read all the time, and the series that has such a cult following that it would be incredible to talk to the creator behind it all, even if just for a few minutes.

Harry Potter

What books might we be surprised to find on your shelf?

Most of the books on my shelves are YA, and most of the YA books on my shelf are fantasy releases, to the surprise of no one. I do have a fair few recipes books but given the new feature I launched a little while ago, Baking with Books, I doubt this would surprise anyone either.

How do you organize your personal library?

I don’t actually have a system when it comes to organising my books, they just go wherever they fit on my bookshelves. I try and keep series together, and finished series will go on the same shelf as other finished series because it saves on the re-organising I need to do when new books are released, but that’s it as far as any ‘system’ goes.

In fact I really need to re-organise my bookshelves. After YALC I’ve been putting books anywhere I have room and it looks really messy.

What book have you always meant to read and haven’t gotten around to yet?

Oh there are plenty, seriously let me direct you to a post I did at the end of July about all the books I own but still have yet to read.

At the moment the main ones, and the ones I am going to make a priority of mine because I’ve been saying I’m going to read them for ages, are; Morning Star by Pierce Brown, The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare (the last three books that is) and The Assassin’s Blade by Sarah J. Maas.

Morning Star

The Mortal Instruments Part Two

The Assassin's Blade

Disappointing, overrated, just not good: what book did you feel you are supposed to like but didn’t?

The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson

While I did go on to enjoy the rest of the series I felt like the first book was a lacklustre start to the trilogy. There are bloggers out there, whose opinions I trust, who loved this book so I did feel like I was missing something when I couldn’t rate it higher than three stars. In the end I couldn’t decide if I liked the main character or not and the love triangle was a big no-no for me.

The Kiss of Deception

What kind of stories are you drawn to? Any you stay clear of?

Stories I’m drawn to include;

  • Anything YA, but I mainly pick up fantasy reads.
  • Anything that’s hyped because I tend to be swept away by hype more often than not.
  • Also if it’s a new release by a favourite author of mine I will stalk my local bookstore waiting for the book to be put on the shelves.
  • Anything with a gorgeous cover.
  • Anything with amazing, gushing, five-star and full of praise reviews on WordPress from my fellow bloggers.

Stories I tend to steer clear of include;

  • Anything non-fiction.
  • Anything classic, sorry I was forced to read too many classics in high school and it kind of killed my love of the genre.
  • Anything with bad, one-star and full of problem reviews on WordPress from my fellow bloggers.

If you could require the president to read one book, what would it be?

The Bone Season series by Samantha Shannon

This isn’t just because these books are set in London, though they are, or because it’s one of my favourite series, though it really is, but I feel The Bone Season is a great example of how NOT to run a government. It could also serve as a warning for how powerful the people can be if they banded together again a corrupt government.

The Bone Season2

What do you plan to read next?

Beasts Made of Night by Tochi Onyebuchi

I got an ARC of this book from YALC back in July and I am so excited to get started on it. The blurb sounds incredible, and from what I’ve heard from other bloggers who also got advance copies of Beasts Made of Night it’s a brilliant read. Here’s hoping the book lives up to the hype.

    1. I managed to get an ARC of Godsgrave, my actual physical copy doesn’t arrive until tomorrow but I’m still really excited because it’s a gorgeous cover! 😀 I hope yours has at least been dispatched now.
From what I’ve read of the Red Rising trilogy it’s amazing! I hope you manage to get to it soon Esther, and that you love it as well but I’m sure you will.
I need to get around to it, I’m wondering if I’ll read it before or after Tower of Dawn. I guess it will depend on how I feel. Ohh, I’ll be interested in seeing what you think of the Shadowhunter books, hopefully that’s a series you’ll really enjoy as well! 😀 ❤

I really need to buckle down and just read Red Rising!
I’m honestly not sure when I’ll read Tower of Dawn, I’m not all that excited about it but I’ve already heard that it’s really good.!

      2. Not long to go though, and I’m sure when you have it in your hands you’ll find the wait was well worth it! 🙂
Yes do, I’m really sure that’ll be a book you love, like 99% sure.
I haven’t heard much about it but I guess it hasn’t been out too long. Gotta wait a little longer for the reviews to filter through I guess. 🙂

Oh, wow, your bookshelf is beautiful! It's kind of messy of course, but it looks so pretty. You have so many more books than me! XD Ooh, I'll have to check Moonrise out! I seem to enjoy the books that you enjoy haha. Great post!

    1. She is like the ultimate writer right? And her Harry Potter series is how I discovered reading so in a way I owe her so much. 🙂
I’m hoping to get started on Beasts Made of Night soon, so I’ll let you know, and hopefully I’ll get around to attempting one of the marshmallow recipes one day. Maybe mine will even look as good as the ones in the recipe books. 🙂
Oh that’s only one section of one of my bookshelves, and I do need to sort it out because I’m not really a fan of the messy thing. Maybe I’ll post some pictures when I’m done, like a before and after thing.
Moonrise is amazing, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it May, and thanks! 😀 ❤

    1. That’s all right, and I think the answer to that question is no one. Well, maybe people who haven’t read the Harry Potter books. 🙂
Oh there’s so much I’d love to speak to her about. I think even just to be in the presence for a few minutes would be amazing though. 😀

      1. Oh that would be great, to learn more about that family. I’d love to learn more about the Marauder’s era Hogwarts, basically everything that came before Harry Potter when James, Remus, Sirius and Peter were at school! 😀

    1. Oh feel free to take part in this one Melissa. I left it open for anyone who wants to take part. 🙂 It was a lot of fun and I’d love to see your answers for it.
I love baking almost as much as I love reading, so any pretty recipe books I need to have on my shelves! 🙂 One day I’ll get around to trying out more of the recipes than I already have.

  4. Thank you for tagging me! I’m going to do this one soon.

PS: I love recipe books too (though I’m bad at acutally making something. I guess I just like to stare at the pictures lol) 🙂

  5. Oooh thanks for the tag; this looks super fun!! ❤

I've never really been in contemporary poetry, but Moonrise sounds super fascinating!! I've actually seen it around my library before, so I'll definitely pick it up.

I love looking through baking books, but the thing is, I'm terrible at baking, so all they usually do is make me hungry :')

And I'm with you on the Kiss of Deception. I personally absolutely HATED that book, omg– I'm pretty sure I rated it one star?? It's probably because the book was so different than what I was expecting. I thought it would be filled with political intrigue/backstabbing/stabbing in general, but instead it revolved around the love life of one very bland and oftentimes thickheaded runaway princess. PLUS that love triangle. *rolls eyes dramatically*

    1. That’s all right, ❤️ I really hope you have fun with this tag. I did and I’ll be looking forwards to seeing your answers for it! 🙂
Moonrise was the first contemporary poetry book I picked up and it was amazing, I’d definitely recommend it but I don’t think it’s actually been released yet. It’s due out on the 7th of this month if I’m remembering correctly.
I’m all right at baking. The things I do are never as pretty as they are in the picture but they taste good and that’s the most important thing right? 🙂
Yeah The Kiss of Deception wasn’t at all what I thought it would be. I did think the series got better. I’m guessing if you rated the first book one star you didn’t go onto the second or third, but I think that may have been because I knew what to expect and adjusted my expectations somewhat. 🙂

      1. Oooh seriously?? I was so sure I saw a book titled Moon-something in my library!! :0 But yep, I’ll definitely check it out!! ❤

Oh my, the finished product NEVER looks as good as the picture. but that's probably largely attributed to the fact that I'm a terrible baker. :')

and yes, I unfortunately didn't go on to the next book. But the rest of the books are rated higher, so I'm guessing it probably does get better?

      2. Yeah it’s out tomorrow. I mean maybe your library does have a copy, if so it could be an ARC rather than a finished one.
I think some of those pictures have to be edited. There’s no way it’s possible to get things that perfect every single time.
If you didn’t enjoy the first one no point forcing yourself through the rest of the series. 🙂 For me it got better, but I can’t say it’s a favourite series of mine or anything.

  6. Thank you for tagging me Beth! I enjoyed reading your answers! 🙂 I hope when you decide to start reading the Mortal Instruments again that you enjoy the last 3! 🙂
Having baking books is the best! I have a few too, my dad likes to get them for me for Christmas. I’m going to try and one day complete all the recipes in one of the books!

    1. That’s all right, I’m glad you enjoyed my post and I’ll be looking forwards to reading yours as well. 🙂
I’m sure I will. I want to get around to The Infernal Devices at the very least before this year is over, and I’m about 99% sure that’s an achievable goal. 🙂
Oh that would be an amazing goal. I have one recipe book called 1001 Tempting Treats so it would take me a long time to work my way through all those recipes! 🙂 ❤️

  7. Ahhh Beth I can’t WAIT for you to read Morning Star!! I have no doubt you’ll love it. ❤ And ooh, I really must get onto reading Nevernight, i've heard such amazing things and I'm glad to hear the sequel is so far just as good! Moonrise sounds so lovely, I've only read one book by Sarah Crossan but I definitely want to read more. Also those desserts on the recipe books look DIVINE and I want some immediately???! xD Loved reading your answers!

    1. I can’t wait either, and also I know I’m going to love it. I’m a massive fan of the series so far. Oh Nevernight is a must. I just finished Godsgrave today and wow, just wow! Moonrise was the first book by Sarah Crossan I picked up but I want to try and get around to some of her others. Moonrise was incredible so I’d highly recommend it. 🙂
The things I make from my recipe books never look as good, but they taste pretty amazing so that’s the important thing right?
      Thanks Analee! 🙂 ❤️
