August Recap

August is over, and with it summer has come to an end though you wouldn’t know that if you were in the UK at the moment.

After YALC and everything else July brought with it August was a quiet month, giving me the time to get through plenty of books and to get started on the many I hauled at YALC. I reviewed eleven books this month, which is the most I’ve got through in a long while. They weren’t all amazing, but there were some exceptional ones.

Monthly Recaps - This Month

Books I Reviewed

August Recap '17, #1

Summer Days and Summer Nights: Twelve Love Stories by Stephanie Perkins (Editor)

I felt really let down by Summer Days and Summer Nights. Despite being marketed as Twelve Love Stories the majority weren’t, and it made this more of a bittersweet read than sweet.

Wesley James Ruined my Life by Jennifer Honeybourn

This was another book I was really let down by. I really didn’t like the main character and couldn’t for the life of me get behind her motivations for wanting revenge against Wesley.

The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell

After two disappointments this month The Last Magician was a brilliant read. What it lacked in action it made up for with incredible characters, and luckily there’s a second book in the works.

S.T.A.G.S. by M.A. Bennett

I picked this up at YALC because there was something about the cover that grabbed me, simple but eye-catching. This was a good book, but what made it exceptional for me was the ending.

ARC Review: Book of Fire by Michelle Kenney

This was a book I enjoyed. The concept was interesting and the individual characters well developed but there were too many downsides, namely the world building I couldn’t wrap my head around.

I received a copy of this book from YA HQ.

Wing Jones by Katherine Webber

I’d describe this book as contemporary with hints of magical realism, and an amazing read. Wing Jones was better than I expected, all thanks to the incredible development of Wing’s character.

Geekerella by Ashley Poston

Plenty of people have read and loved this book, so my hopes for Geekerella were high. I thought this was a cute read, with plenty of fandom and Cinderella references I loved discovering.

ARC Review: A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares by Krystal Sutherland

I thought this book would be a fun contemporary read, so I was surprised by the depth it had. A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares is probably my top book of this month, and definitely one of my favourite contemporary reads of the year.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley.

ARC Review: Fireblood by Elly Blake

After the hints that Fireblood would have a love triangle I was nervous about picking it up. While I feel like it suffered a little from ‘second book syndrome’ this was still a great read, even the love triangle aspect was well written.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley.

ARC Review: Tarnished City by Vic James

This was one of my most anticipated releases of the year, and Tarnished City more than lived up to my expectations. It took the series to a whole new level and I am so beyond excited for Bright Ruin.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley.

ARC Review: I am Traitor by Sif Sigmarsdóttir

While I had trouble connecting to the main character, and was a little confused by the format of the story, I am Traitor was definitely an addictive read. I always wanted to know what would happen next.

I received a copy of this book from BKMRK.

Monthly Recaps - Book Haul

The biggest surprise of August was that I didn’t actually buy any books. It felt so strange knowing no Amazon packages would be arriving for me, walking out of Waterstones empty handed despite spending a good amount of time browsing the shelves. Then again I did overspend and overhaul at YALC last month so maybe this isn’t as much of a surprise as I thought.

Monthly Recaps - Last Month

There are so many highly anticipated books being released next month that it was a real struggle to just pick one for this part of my Monthly Recap. I manage it in the end and I think it’s almost fitting that last month I featured a book by Leigh Bardugo and this month it’s another book by Leigh Bardugo that made the cut.

The Language of Thorns

The Language of Thorns: Midnight Tales and Dangerous Magic by Leigh Bardugo

Love speaks in flowers. Truth requires thorns.

Travel to a world of dark bargains struck by moonlight, of haunted towns and hungry woods, of talking beasts and gingerbread golems, where a young mermaid’s voice can summon deadly storms and where a river might do a lovestruck boy’s bidding but only for a terrible price.

Inspired by myth, fairy tale, and folklore, #1 New York Times-bestselling author Leigh Bardugo has crafted a deliciously atmospheric collection of short stories filled with betrayals, revenge, sacrifice, and love.

Perfect for new readers and dedicated fans, these tales will transport you to lands both familiar and strange—to a fully realized world of dangerous magic that millions have visited through the novels of the Grishaverse.

This collection of six stories includes three brand-new tales, all of them lavishly illustrated with art that changes with each turn of the page, culminating in six stunning full-spread illustrations as rich in detail as the stories themselves.

August ended up being a month of ARC reads, and it seems September will be more of the same. I am steadily working my way through my YALC book haul so my Mid Year To-Read Goal is taking a bit of a backseat for now, but it’s safe to say all the books I have to read during September in between the ARCs are books I already own that I need to get through.

  1. Oh no, I’m sorry to hear you were let down by Summer Days and Summer Nights! It sounded like such a cute anthology, and I believe some of my favourite authors are involved in it as well. And eep I really must read The Last Magician!! I’m so glad you liked that one, at least it balances out some of your more disappointing reads this month. 🙂 SO excited for The Language of Thorns, ahah! ❤

    1. Yeah overall it was just a little too disappointing for me. It was a summer romance anthology but very little of the stories actually had romance in them. Leigh Bardugo’s addition was amazing, but then I expected nothing different. 🙂
Oh god yes you need to read The Last Magician Analee. It’s such an amazing book, and yeah it definitely balanced out some of the more disappointing books this months.
The Language of Thorns I know is going to be incredible! 😀 ❤️

  2. Definitely a successful month of blogging, if you ask me! Congratulations on saving money this month too, Beth! As weird as it may be, being able to go a month without a purchase is AMAZING as a bookworm! 😛 Hope September will be filled with awesomeness and I’ll definitely be looking forward to Bardugo’s latest book. 😉

    1. I’m counting this as a successful month as well. 🙂 Both in terms of the books I got through and the books I didn’t buy because you’re right it’s saving money. 🙂
September is definitely going to be filled with awesomeness I think, and a lot more book purchases because it seems like all of my anticipated releases for the rest of this year are being released in September! 😀

  3. Looks like August went very well for you! I feel bad because I haven’t read your reviews for those books yet. I have so much catching up to do. All the good things you’ve said about Wing Jones, A Semi-Definitive List, and The Last Magician make me want to bump them up on my TBR. I’m so happy you enjoyed Geekerella. It’s such a cute read. I think I’ll skip out on Wesley James Ruined My Life. You’re not the only blogger I know who has been disappointed by it. Sophie also mentioned how it fell short of expectations. It sounded pretty cute but too many mixed/negative reviews are kind of keeping me from picking it up any time soon haha. I’m surprised you didn’t happen to buy books last month! Although, I didn’t buy many either. I think I bought one (Darkest Part of the Forest) and that was only $3 haha. Although, I’m expecting to break my bank this month buying up They Both Die at the End, Warcross, The Language of Thorns (and a few more)! I am so excited for those releases! Hope September proves to be a wonderful month of reading for you, Beth! 😀 ❤

    1. Thanks so much Azia, I managed to get around to a fair few books this month so I did post more reviews than I normally would in a month. 🙂 Oh Wing Jones, A Semi-Definitive List, and The Last Magician are beyond incredible reads. Definitely bump them up your to-read list and definitely definitely get around to them ASAP. They’re incredible, and yes Geekerella was amazing as well.
Can’t say I’d recommend Wesley James Ruined My Life. I saw Sophie’s review before starting that book and was still disappointed when I went into it myself. :/
My lack of book buying this month makes up for what will be a pretty big haul next month. At least that’s what I’m telling myself. All those books will be on my list as well along with a few more. I can’t wait but my bank account will likely hate me. 🙂
Thanks so much Azia, I hope you have a great September as well. 🙂 ❤

      1. I sure will then! I’ll spend the better part of an hour catching up on all those reviews it seems LOL
That’s never good. Two bloggers who share the same opinion is enough to convince me that I might be sorely disappointed by the book too. So, yeah, gonna have to skip that one haha
Yeah, I keep trying to preorder books before my money has come in and it’s killing me trying to hold back on buying all the amazing September reads haha XD I think I might just buy and deal with the consequences later haha

      2. I wish I’d taken Sophie’s review for fact rather than trying to book for myself. It would have saved me reading something I wasn’t at all interested in. 🙂
I only worry about the money when the book is actually released. As long as I make sure I have enough to pay for it on the release date I pre-order pretty much every anticipated release of mine. There are a lot of them! 🙂 ❤️

        Liked by 1 person

      3. LOL, I’m sure we’ve all had the same regret about certain books XD I know I have. And yeah, I think I should buy more pre-orders than post-released books. I’ve been doing that more lately, but I might have to go down that path exclusively to save a bit more money! I’m broke LOL XD

        Liked by 1 person

      4. Yeah, but at the same time if I hadn’t read this book I’d always be wondering whether I would have enjoyed it you know? Better to read it for yourself and make your own opinions.
I find it easier to budget that ways as well, because I know how much the book will cost and I can built it into my plan rather than picking it up once it’s released and then trying to budget around that you know? 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      5. Yeah, that’s usually how I feel when I end up reading books regardless of some reviews I read haha
Agreed. It’s a much smarter way to go about things, especially for us bookworms who don’t know how to stop buying books LOL XD

  4. You read some seriously awesome books! We are particularly glad to hear that you liked The Last Magician as we are planning to read that one this month in preparation for a book festival we are attending in October that the author will be at!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thanks so much. 😀 Oh The Last Magician was an incredible read, definitely one of my favourite books I got through this month, so I hope you both really enjoy it as well. Also wow that’s great you get to meet Lisa Maxwell! What event is it that you’re going to in October? 🙂

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Yes! They are amazing! We always meet the best people at book events and seeing authors is always awesome! And we are so happy that you enjoyed YALC! It sounds like such a cool event!

      2. We haven’t been to the Texas Teen Book Festival before, so this will definitely be a new experience for us! But we have been to BookCo,n which is massive! So we are hoping that if we can handle BookCon, we can handle a smaller book event haha! But you are so right, returning to an event you have been to before is so nice because you know those little secrets and tricks!

        Liked by 1 person

      3. A new but exciting experience right? 🙂 Oh BookCon is one I really want to go to, and maybe one day I will but until then I’m content with YALC. Yeah I imagine if you can handle that this one will be no problem for you both.
Exactly, I found it so much easier to manage YALC this year because I had the experience from last year to go by. 🙂

        Liked by 1 person

      4. YALC sounds amazing! We hope to go to that one someday too! So hopefully you will get to go to BookCon one day and us YALC haha!

    1. Thanks, I think I can definitely count August as a success overall. 🙂
Warcross is another book I can’t wait for. There were so many being released in September it was a struggle to just pick one for this recap. The Language of Thorns just barely won out.
I hope you enjoy S.T.A.G.S. in that case, and thanks so much Ilsa. 🙂

  5. Honestly, not buying books for a while can be quite healthy, so it’s good that you didn’t buy any in August! I’m trying not to buy any books until I’ve finished everything on my TBR – unless there’s a special bookish event of course! 😊

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yeah to be honest I’m trying to cut down on my whim purchases. I still have a few pre-orders that will be arriving but it seems they’re all being released in September. 🙂
Oh I hope you manage to stick to that goal then, and yeah it’s hard to resist at bookish events. Do you have any coming up?

      1. I’m going to an exhibition on queer art at the Tate Britain in London later this month, and I think the museum shop has some cool books, so I might pick one up 😍 But other than that no events coming up yet! 😀

  6. It seems like you had a great and less hectic month than in July, which is great, Beth! You read some great books – I have heard good things about Wing Jones and recently added it to my TBR, glad to hear you enjoyed it so much 🙂
Hope you will have a great September! xx

    1. Yeah August was nice and quiet for me, and I got through a lot more books this month than any before I think. 🙂
Wing Jones is a great book, I hope you manage to get around to it soon and I hope you end up enjoying it as well. I thought it was brilliant so I’ll be looking forwards to hearing your thoughts on it.
Thanks Marie. 🙂 I hope you have a great September as well. ❤

  7. It looks like you had a great month Beth! I’m surprised you didn’t buy a single book this month, that must have been so hard for you since I’m so used to seeing you have so many books in your hauls! Kudos to you for being able to resist temptation haha!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thanks Meghan, yeah I think so too. I definitely got through more books this month than any before it. 😀
I was really surprised. It’s felt strange knowing there aren’t going to be any Amazon parcels arriving for me, but September there are loads of books I was being released so this is definitely a once off thing. 🙂
