This is My Genre, Tell Me Yours Book Tag

I can never talk too much about my favourite genre, and now there’s a whole tag dedicated to it. I reckon by now most of you know what genre I will be featuring for this tag, after all it’s my favourite for a reason. I was tagged by Meggy at Chocolate ‘N’ Waffles and Lashaan and Trang at Bookidote. Thanks so much for the tag everyone, I had a lot of fun with this one so I hope you enjoy reading my answers just as much.

What’s your favourite genre?

Fantasy.

Did anyone expect a different answer from me?

Who is your favourite author from the genre?

Oh I couldn’t choose just one, not because I’m horrible at making decision but because I don’t have just one favourite author. Chances are I’ll have missed someone off this list but my top five favourite authors are; V.E. Schwab, Samantha Shannon, Marissa Meyer, Laini Taylor and Sarah J. Maas.

Favourite Fantasy Authors

What is it about the genre that keeps you pulling back?

All the different worlds you can discover within the pages of a fantasy book. The setting and world building are always my favourite aspects of fantasy books; I love exploring what an author has created because each world is so unique and there’s always some part I wish was real.

What’s the book that started your love for your favourite genre?

The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

I’m sorry because this is a really standard and cliché answer but it’s the truth. Harry Potter is not only the series that started my love of reading but the series which hooked me on the fantasy genre where magic is real and anything can happen as long as you imagine it can.

Harry Potter

If you had to recommend at least one book from your favourite genre to a non-reader/someone looking to start reading the genre, what would you choose and why?

Shades of Magic series by V.E. Schwab

This has got to be the series I have recommend the most out of all the others I read, because it is that amazing. The world building is beyond compare, the characters wonderfully developed throughout all three books, and the plots were fast-paced and had me hooked from the first page.

shades-of-magic-uk-series

What’s more the series has finished, so there’s no agonising wait for the next book like there is for my other favourite series.

Why do you read?

The main reason is to escape on a magical adventure. I’m never going to have to search for the Deathly Hallows like Harry, or battle Kronos like Percy, or travel to Grey, Red and White London like Kell, so the next best thing is to read about their adventures and experience them that way.

  1. Ahhh I definitely agree with all your answers!! Fantasy is definitely my favourite genre as well, though contemporary is a super close favourite ahah. I love fantasy for the same reasons as you as well, it’s just so incredible to delve into a whole different world with magic and possibilities we could never explore in real life haha. And yes!! V.E. Schwab is an incredible author, and the Shades of Magic series is simply amazing. ❤ Lovely post!

    1. Oh that’s good to hear, and yay another fantasy fan! 🙂 Contemporary is second for me, can’t really say it’s a close second though. While I do love the genre I don’t think anything is even close to knocking fantasy off the top spot. 😀
Yes exactly, we’re never going to get to go to these worlds ourselves but if the world building is incredible enough we can feel like we’re there and that’s what I love about the genre, and why world building is such an important aspect for me in fantasy books.
There was no other author and series I could have chosen for that question than V.E. Schwab and the Shades of Magic trilogy! 😀
Thanks so much Analee. 🙂 ❤️

  2. So happy you did this tag! 🙂 No, I was not surprised by your answer :p Shades of Magic series by V.E. Schwab is on my “relaxing and possibly not reviewing books” list! I don’t have time for the genre right now as I’m trying to drown in a pool of my favorite genres, haha!

    1. It took me a fair while to get around to it but I managed in the end. 🙂
No I don’t think anyone was surprised by that answer then again it would have been more of a shock if I put something different for that question you know? I hope you manage to get around to the series one day Meggy. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it. 🙂

  3. Lovely answers to this tag, Beth! I could have guessed your answers with Schwab and the Shade of Magic series, aha 🙂 I am so glad that I let myself be tempted by the first book in the series a little while ago, curious about all the hype. I think this series certainly made me want to read more fantasy more than a year ago, and now it’s one of my favorite genres just as well 🙂
Did you hear about Schwab writing more books set in the same world? 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Marie, yeah some of the answers are obvious ones. Then again I talk about them a lot because they’re my favourites so it would have been more surprising to see another answer right? 🙂
Yay that’s great to hear. I’m really glad you picked up the first book as well because I love to see more people discovering and loving this series.
Yes, I definitely heard and I am so so so excited. It’s going to be amazing and I can’t wait. I take it you’re excited as well right? 😀

  4. I absolutely LOVE Maas, Taylor and Shannon! They have created such amazing worlds… i think His Dark Materials is what got me more into the genre than HP, purely because I read them before reading the HP books! Thanks for the tag!

    1. They really do, I always know no matter what they write I’m guaranteed to love it! 😀 Oh I didn’t end up reading His Dark Materials until I was in high school, I was a little late on the uptake when it came to that series.
That’s all right, I’m looking forwards to seeing your answers for this one. 😀

ahem. i am fine. completely calm thanks.

I’m yet to read a Sarah j Maas book or one from Marissa Meyer BUT OMG LAINI TAYLOR WORKS MAGIC WITH HER WRITING and V.E SCHWAB is like QUEEEEN as well aS LEigh Bardugo.
I just love magic and different world and dark stabby scenes so obviously FANTASY IS MY FAVE. Harry Potter was the first fantasy I read as well! Still a complete Potterhead!

    1. Oh that’s a great way to describe it. Can I say me and fantasy are my OTP too? 🙂
It can be hard to calm down when it’s books we’re talking about! 😀
In that case you definitely need to read their books soon. Both are incredible writers and I’m sure if you love fantasy you’ll love Maas and Meyer’s series.
I’m pretty sure Laini Taylor is Magic, same with V.E. Schwab and Leigh Bardugo, they’re the best of the best in my opinion. Same here, when it comes down to it nothing is ever going to be able to take away my love for Harry Potter! 🙂 ❤️

  6. JK Rowling and Cassandra Clare are my favourite fantasy authors! Apart from Harry Potter, which is a given fantasy series for most people, I didn’t read a lot of fantasy until I found the Shadowhunter world, but now there’s no turning back… WHY HAVE I STILL NOT READ ANY VICTORIA SCHWAB? Bad BookMuffin! What a wonderful tag post ☺️

    1. J.K. Rowling is kind of a given favourite of mine. I discovered reading and fantasy through Harry Potter so how can she be anything but? 🙂 Oh I’m about one quarter of the way through Clare’s Shadowhunter books, and I’m really enjoying them. I can see why they put fantasy on the map for you. Definitely try and get around to one of Schwab’s books ASAP. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. 🙂
      Thanks! ❤️

  7. Oh YESSS. Fantasy is definitely my favorite genre as well! VE Schwab and Marissa Meyer are also my favorite authors (plus Marie Lu and Leigh Bardugo ahahah). I totally agree that fantasy allows you to just experience all these other beautiful worlds and UGH I love it.

P.S. Did you hear about Schwab’s new book deal??? ASDGHSKFKDLALGKKFSLA 😭😭😍🙏

    1. There’s so much to love about fantasy books isn’t there? And so much variety as well. I don’t think you can beat Meyer and Schwab (and Bardugo and Lu, I can’t believe I forgot to include Leigh Bardugo in my top five!)
That’s the reason I read when it comes down to it, to live in these fantasy worlds for however long it takes me to read the book.
Yep, saw it last night and OH MY GOD I am so so so so excited! I can’t wait! 😀 ❤️

  8. This looks like such a fun tag, thanks for tagging me Beth! I think I’ll end up having the same answer for the final question, since ADSOM is my favourite trilogy, but more promotion can only be a good thing! Kudos for narrowing your favourite author down to five, I think I’ll probably have to do something similar!

    1. That’s all right, I hope you have fun with this tag and I can’t wait to see your answers for it. 🙂
Yeah nothing can beat Shades I Magic can it, at least not in my opinion. Did you see the news V.E. Schwab revealed on Twitter yesterday?! I am so excited.
Well after a comment Lilly left on this post it’s now a top six. I forgot to include Leigh Bardugo, and honestly there are probably plenty more authors I forgot to include. 🙂

      1. YES, I DID SEE THE NEWS! I spent the rest of the evening freaking out with excitement! I can’t believe we’re getting another FOUR BOOKS in the Shades of Magic world. We’ve truly been blessed by the book gods. Ah, fair enough! I definitely look back on older blog posts and realise there are other books and authors I could have included!

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Oh my god it’s the best news ever right?! I can’t wait for these books, they’re pretty much at the top of my to-read list and all we’ve heard is the news that there are new books being released. 😀
Hindsight right? I feel like you remember more right after you’ve hit the publish button than at any other time.

  9. The Darker Shade of Magic series is def a good place to start & Harry also got me started on my love for al this Fantasy #noregrets lol! We share the same love for Laine, Marissa, and V.E. Schwab & for me the other author would have to be Leigh Bardugo 😉 Great answers Beth ❤

    1. It can’t be beat in my opinion, and yeah I feel most people discovered fantasy through Harry Potter as a child. Definitely no regrets! 😀
OH MY GOD! I forgot to include Leigh Bardugo in my top five! I seriously can’t believe that especially considering she has two new books out very soon!
I’ll say it in the comments instead that Leigh Bardugo is a favourite author of mine as well, making it a top six I guess. Thanks so much Lilly. 🙂 ❤️

      2. There’s always someone I end up forgetting when it comes to listing my favourites. I just knew there was an author as well but I couldn’t think of who! 🙂
The Language of Thorns is like number one for me at the moment, though I know Wonder Women will be amazing as well! 😀 ❤
