Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event which aims to shines a light on eagerly anticipated upcoming releases.
A Reaper at the Gates by Sabaa Tahir
Release Date: April 10th 2018
Beyond the Empire and within it, the threat of war looms ever larger.
The Blood Shrike, Helene Aquilla, is assailed on all sides. Emperor Marcus, haunted by his past, grows increasingly unstable, while the Commandant capitalizes on his madness to bolster her own power. As Helene searches for a way to hold back the approaching darkness, her sister’s life and the lives of all those in the Empire hang in the balance.
Far to the east, Laia of Serra knows the fate of the world lies not in the machinations of the Martial court, but in stopping the Nightbringer. But while hunting for a way to bring him down, Laia faces unexpected threats from those she hoped would aid her, and is drawn into a battle she never thought she’d have to fight.
And in the land between the living and the dead, Elias Veturius has given up his freedom to serve as Soul Catcher. But in doing so, he has vowed himself to an ancient power that will stop at nothing to ensure Elias’s devotion—even at the cost of his humanity.
When I got my hands on an ARC of A Torch Against the Night at YALC last year I figured that meant it was about time I started the series. I quickly fell in love with the world Sabaa Tahir had created, and after the way A Torch Against the Night ended I was desperate for the third book but gutted to discover it wouldn’t be released until 2018.
Not only did we get a title and a blurb revel for A Reaper at the Gates but also a brand new cover design for the whole series. Normally I’d say something here about how the cover redesign means the books on my shelves will no longer match, but I already have two different covers for An Ember in the Ashes and A Torch Against the Night, so it almost makes sense to have a third different cover for the third book.
What do you think of A Reaper at the Gates? Is it a must on your to-read list, or are there any other books you can’t wait for the release date of? Let me know in the comments and let me know if you took part in this week’s Waiting on Wednesday as well.
What happened to the cover art style… The first 2 books had AMAZZIING covers.. This one feels out of place.. I didn’t even realize it was the 3rd book in the series. Oh, this is just my opinion though. I don’t know if anyone else shares it hahah

They are re-releasing the first two books with the same cover designs as the third one. I’m not sure why they’ve been re-designed, then again why are book covers re-designed at all?
I quite like them but I can see why some people may not. The first cover designs were pretty amazing too. 🙂

I was getting kind of annoyed with Laia in the last book (Helene was my fave surprisingly in that book) but even so I’m curious to see what will happen next!

Yeah for about half the book Laia really annoyed me, but towards the end that changed and I loved her character once more. 😀 Helene’s always been a favourite of mine.
Oh I can’t wait for book three, it’s going to be amazing! 🙂

Ah yes, fantastic choice! I’m so excited for this one. But I didn’t know we’d have to wait until 2018 for it to be released!! I thought it’d be coming out by the end of this year. NOOOOO!!!

Thanks so much Azia, yeah that was pretty much my reaction when I got to the end of A Torch Against the Night. I needed the next book and it’s still such a long wait before it is released.
Still you know it will be worth the wait! 😀

2018??! Oh my gosh. I still haven’t read A Torch Against the Night, haha I think I’m going to end up binge reading this series once this is released, but I am SO excited for it! I’m so glad you’re enjoying this series! I really liked the first book and I hope you enjoy this last one as well. ❤

Well you have enough time to get started on it before A Reaper at the Gates is released! 😀 I’m going to have to go back and re-read the first two books before picking this one up. Yeah this is a great series, I hope you enjoy it as well when you get around to it! 😀 ❤

Very true! I might end up rereading the first and starting the second a bit closer to the release date so I don’t have to wait for the third as long. 🙈 I hope so too! I loved the first book so I hope that continues!

I’d advise that. I always find the wait for books unbearable and the wait for A Reaper at the Gates has been unbearable. It feels a little worse now we have the title/cover/blurb for it. 🙂

I actually don’t really like this series all that much and I didn’t even get through ATATN …

Oh that’s a shame, but I guess we can’t all like the same books can we? At least you gave it a try. 🙂

eeeeeeeK! That cover! every time I see it I give myself the only eye roll for not yet starting this series! LOL smh. Do you know if this is the paperback cover or hardcover? I own the 1st book but it seems like a cover change? really don’t like when this happens smh.

Personally I’d say wait until the third book is released before starting the series. If you don’t you will have an unbearable wait once you get to the end of the second book and realise you don’t already have the third one on hand. 😀
This is a great series though. Actually it’s a whole series redesign. The first two are being re-released in paperback and the third on is only being released in hardcover at the moment but the paperback edition will likely be available later. 🙂

Same here, after the way A Torch Against the Night ended I needed the third book so badly!
It’s a great series isn’t it? 😀

I didn’t fall in love with the first book but the second book was great. I can’t wait to find out what happens next. I wasn’t a huge fan of Helene in the first book but I am definitely rooting for her after what happened in Book 2!

Oh that’s a shame, but at least the second was better. I enjoyed A Torch Against the Night more than the first book as well.
Yeah the third one is at the top of my to-read list now. I need to know what happens next! 😀

I’ve seen this book around on a few blogs and it seems like a lot of my friends are talking about it on goodreads. I’m still debating if I should put it on my tbr but it looks really interesting. Great pick!

I think because of the reveal of the cover redesigns, and the title and blurb of the third book this series is on a lot of people’s radar at the moment.
In my opinion this is an incredible series so I’d definitely recommend it. Thanks so much. 🙂

Oh that’s a shame, still cover designs can’t win us all over can they? 🙂

Thankfully not, or I’d spend my time buying because of cover love!

Loved the cover of this as soon as I saw it! Followed the author on IG and she’s just adorable! I need to read An Ember in the Ashes first though

It’s pretty amazing, and so are the new covers for the first two books as well! 😀 Oh I really hope you enjoy An Ember in the Ashes, it’s a great book in my opinion! 🙂

I haven’t read An Ember in the Ashes (I need to ahhhhh) but I had no idea she was coming out with more books in that world!

Oh yes there are plenty of books. The second book, A Torch Against the Night, was one I liked better than the first in the series even.
I’m not sure if this is the last in the series, I feel like I remember hearing about a fourth book, could be wrong though.

I read the first one when it came out in 2015 (I think) but then I heard ATATN wasn’t as good so I’m waiting for the third one to see if I will continue. I actually really don’t like the cover change but I appreciate that she fought for the covers she wanted and that there’s a POC on the cover

See I actually preferred A Torch Against the Night to the first book, and I really enjoyed the first book as well. Well hopefully the third one will be amazing and you’ll pick up this series again.
Yes, it’s amazing to see a POC on the cover, definitely an important aspect to the diversity I think we all want to see more in books. 🙂

I think I’ll pass on this one. It sounds like a great book, but I hate reading unfinished series. If it ends with the third book in 2018, I’ll read it then!

Oh I completely get what you mean. Sometimes the wait for the next book in the series is too unbearable, which is how I felt after A Torch Against the Night ended.
Hopefully when this series does end, and if you get around to it then, you’ll really enjoy it. 😀

i think this book will kill me!! i can’t believe it’s been that long after the release of ATATN!! saba is a really good author i can’t wait to be reunited with Elias!!

I know the feeling, for some reason the reveal of the cover and blurb has just made the wait seem that much more unbearable. The ending of ATATN was kind of insane and I need to know what happens to Elias and Laia and Helene next! 😀
