Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Recommendations for …

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week there is a new topic for bloggers to choose and list their top ten. This week’s theme is Top Ten Recommendations for …

Rather than do recommendations for a specific genre or group of people, like the prompt suggested and like I have in the past, I’m doing recommendations based on books. It’s a ‘if you liked this book check out these books’ Top Ten Tuesday post.

Top Ten Tuesday has been on hiatus for a month and a half, and while some people were still taking part in the weekly feature during that time I was not one of them, so it’s nice to have some prompts again to post my top ten on a Tuesday.

Top Ten Tuesday #73

If you loved Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Check out The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell and Zeroes by Scott Westerfeld, Margo Lanagan and Deborah Biancotti

There was a lot I loved about Six of Crows, and if like me you’re searching for books to fill the hole the end of Crooked Kingdom left in your life then definitely check out The Last Magician and Zeroes.

The Last Magician has the heist element and the incredible character developed that I loved seeing in Six of Crows, while Zeroes has a group of misfits teaming up to achieve a larger goal who reminded me of Kaz and his Dregs.

If you loved Caraval by Stephanie Garber

Check out A Crown of Wishes by Roshani Chokshi

Both Caraval and A Crown of Wishes have a dangerous competition our main characters find themselves taking part in, with a prize they desire more than anything else. Both have two characters paired together despite their mistrust of one another, and any initial reservations. Both have magic and danger and romance, and above all both have incredible worlds I wish I could visit myself.

Books to Read in Pairs (2)

If you loved Holding Up the Universe by Jennifer Niven

Check out The Boy Most Likely To by Huntley Fitzpatrick and A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares by Krystal Sutherland

The main thing I loved about Holding Up the Universe was the journey the two main characters went on, both Libby and Jack had things they needed to work through and their development let them.

The Boy Most Likely To tells us Tim’s story as he struggles with alcohol addiction, and Alice’s as she struggles to keep her family from falling apart. A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares is an incredible story, with a heartbreaking take on the issues Esther, Eugene and Jonah are all facing.

If you loved Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

Check out The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

After Carry On are you looking for another book with a heart-warming but hilarious story? Another book with a touch of magic and plenty of danger? Another book with a romance you’ll root for as much as you did Simon and Baz? Then definitely pick up The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, and find yourself quickly falling in love with Monty, Percy and Felicity.

If you loved Red Rising by Pierce Brown

Check out The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet and And I Darken by Kiersten White

Personally I don’t know if there’s any series that can quite meet the standards Pierce Brown set for Red Rising, unless we could the sequel series Iron Gold that’s due to be released next year.

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet is an incredible sci-fi read, honestly one of the best I’ve picked up. However if what you’re looking for is the brutal and unforgiving characters who are willing to do anything, go to any lengths, to achieve their goal then definitely pick up And I Darken.

Top Ten Tuesday #73 (5)

If you loved Legend by Marie Lu

Check out Gilded Cage by Vic James

I’m not a massive fan of dystopian books but if you enjoyed Legend as much as I did then chances are you’ll love Gilded Cage as much as I did as well. Like how June found herself on the opposite side to the Republic she served her whole life there are characters in Vic James’ Gilded Cage playing both sides of the rebellion.

Top Ten Tuesday #73 (6)

If you loved Hunted by Meagan Spooner

Check out Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge

Fairytale retellings are a subgenre I am a massive fan of. Meagan Spooner stayed close to the original Beauty and the Beast story but still managed to create a magical and unique read with Hunted, and Rosamund Hodge did the same thing in Cruel Beauty. It’s a darker retelling than Hunted, but beautiful in unexpected ways.

So what do you think? Did you take part in this week’s Top Ten Tuesday, if so let me know if you agree with my suggestions, and if you don’t what books you’d recommend in their place.

  1. Ahh The Last Magician totally just shot up high on my TBR list haha. I ADORED Six of Crows so much, The Last Magician must really be something! And ooh I love your rec for Carry On, I loved that one and The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue so much. ❤ Oh and Red Rising was really something, wasn't it? 😀 Pierce Brown is going to have to work hard to follow up the trilogy with his upcoming spin off series haha. I have no doubt it will be great though! I've definitely been meaning to pick up And I Darken as well. ❤ LOVE this post, Beth!!

    1. Ha, that’s good to hear! Yes if you enjoyed Six of Crows you definitely need to check out The Last Magician, I don’t compare those two books lightly but they do fit well together because I think if you enjoyed one you’re guaranteed to enjoy the other as well. 🙂
Yeah Carry On and The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue are two favourites of mine as well.
Red Rising was incredible, and yeah it’s going to be hard but I’m like 99% sure Iron Gold is going to be even more amazing! I can’t wait for it’s release, like I’m pretty much counting down the days.
Definitely pick up And I Darken soon in that case.
Thanks so much Analee! 😀 ❤

  2. This is a great post, Beth, love your recommendations! Also, I’m feeling pretty proud of myself because I bought two books on this list of recs, Legend and The Boy Most Likely To a couple days ago, so…yay me? Ahah. I can’t wait to read these two 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Marie, and oh that’s great to hear. 😀 I can’t wait to see what you think of both those books. The Boy Most Likely To was actually one of the first contemporary books I reviewed on this blog, and Legend was a recent read of mine so you must know how much I loved that series! 🙂 ❤️

    1. Thanks Gretchen, oh definitely try and get around to both of those books soon then. The Gentleman’s Guide and The Last Magician are just amazing reads, and hopefully you’ll agree with all the amazing things people are saying about both books when you read them.
      Thanks again! ❤

  3. Ooh I love these recommendations Beth! I loved Caraval of course so maybe I’ll have t check out A Crown of Wishes!! I actually read Gilded Cage before it came out and I wasn’t the biggest fan, so I don’t know if I’ll be reading Legend any time soon, although I have met a lot of people that loved it.

    1. Thanks so much Esther. 🙂 Oh definitely do, Caraval and A Crown of Wishes are two books that work well together, I think if you loved one you’re nearly guaranteed to love the other as well.
Oh that’s a shame about Gilded Cage, but it’s possible you could still enjoy Legend. Unless it was the dystopian novel aspect that put you off Gilded Cage that is.

  4. Such an original TTT. You sort got me super curious about The Last Magician now… I have only seen huge praise for it, and it did sound pretty epic, but saying that anyone who’s loved Six of Crows should check out The Last Magician? Sounds like destiny to me, since Six of Crows is one of the rare YA novels I’ve read and loved! 😛

    1. Thanks so much Lashaan. Oh I’ve yet to see a bad review for The Last Magician, it’s an amazing book and I’d definitely recommend it, especially if you loved Six of Crows. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed (at least I seriously hope you won’t be disappointed.) 😀

  5. Agh, I was so excited to see a rec for Legend, but I’ve heard some negative things about it so I may not pick it up! Ooh, I’ll DEFINITELY check out The Last Magician and Zeroes, then! I love Six of Crows so much. :’)

A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares looks super good! I’ve been meaning to read Holding Up the Universe, so hopefully I’ll get to that soon. Agh, I read Gentleman’s and enjoyed it, and I’ve been wanting to read Carry On so hopefully I’ll enjoy it if I get to it!

    1. Oh that’s a shame, but I guess we can’t all like the same books, and I’ve found dystopian books can be a little bit hit and miss. Oh definitely do May, I think you’ll love both because they’re amazing stories on their own you know?
A Semi-Definitive List of Worst Nightmares is amazing, one of my top contemporary reads for the year so far, and Carry On is actually one of my all-time favourites in general. I really hope you love all these books May! 😀 ❤

    1. Thanks so much Dani. 😀 Oh even if you hadn’t enjoyed Gilded Cage I’d still recommend Legend, it’s an incredible series. The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet and Red Rising are also really amazing reads, they’re two favourite sci-fi series of mine.
      Thanks so much! 😀

    1. Thanks so much. 🙂 I wanted to try something different, because I couldn’t think of any specific genres of themes I wanted to recommend books from. Also I’ve never done a “if you liked this, you’ll like this” post before.
Oh well any books you pick up from this list I hope you really enjoy, and thanks for the link. I’ll definitely check out your TTT. 🙂

    1. That’s all right 🙂 I’m really glad you enjoyed this list. Ha, I’ve seen a few recommendations posts where I’ve read the suggested books but not the original ones. It works both ways around, so basically anything on this list you haven’t read is something I’d really recommend. 😀

  6. So many great choices!! Almost all of these are books that have been sitting on my TBR for quite awhile. I need to make some time and actually read a bunch of them!
