The end of July only means one thing for me, and that’s that it’s time for YALC.
For everyone who doesn’t know YALC stands for the Young Adult Literature Convention and it’s three days full of craziness, running like made for ARCs and giveaways, and ending up with an aching body from carrying around more books than any one person should have to carry around. This was my second full weekend at YALC, and I’d say I had an even better time this year than I did last year. Granted it was incredibly exhausting, but so far the best weekend of 2017.
There was an incredible line-up this time around, and before I went I made sure I knew what I wanted to do, what panels I wanted to see and what signings I wanted to be in the queue for. However despite my excellent (maybe a slight over-exaggeration there) organisation skills there was still a certain amount done on a whim. There were times when I was sitting in a panel and I had to run out to grab an ARC that I saw through Twitter was being given away.
YALC Top Tip #1: Follow the publishing houses on Twitter and put a notification alert on their Tweets. There are plenty of ARCs up for grabs and they are all announced on Twitter but it really is first come first series.
Also keep an eye on #YALC for any publishing houses you may have missed.
Friday was the first day of YALC, and I was up at Olympia London just after 8am for a convention that didn’t start until nine. Still it was well worth it when the doors opened and I was finally inside. The first day was when I ended up getting most of my books, and by the end my shoulder felt like it was going to fall off from carrying around so many books in a selection of tote bags.
YALC Top Tip #2: It is so much easier, and friendlier to your shoulder, to take a small suitcase rather than being forced to carry around twenty odd books in four tote bags.
I met Alwyn Hamilton, who I would say is one of the nicest authors I’ve ever met, Melinda Salisbury, Taran Matharu, Emily Barr, and Samantha Shannon, who is the author of one of my favourite series, while getting my books signed. I also managed to snag my first few ARCs of the weekend, but more on that later in my YALC Haul.
Saturday was the day I was the most excited for because this was the day both V.E. Schwab and Laini Taylor were going to be at YALC. I had an opportunity to attend Laini Taylor’s author signing at Waterstones Piccadilly back in April, but I had plans the same day so had to give it a miss. I was devastated but felt much better when I saw she’d be at YALC later this year. The signing queues for both authors were huge, but meeting them both (V.E. Schwab for the second time) was probably the highlight of my weekend.
YALC Top Tip #3: This year they were doing virtual queuing for the authors whose signing queues got too long, and it was a brilliant way to run things. Instead of waiting in a queue for half an hour/an hour you got a ticket with a number, and then you could wander off an sit in another panel or buy more books knowing you still had a place in the queue.
Also on Saturday I met up with Kate from Reading Through Infinity which was a nice surprise, getting to meet someone in real life I’d been speaking to online for so long.
YALC Top Tip #4: Talk to other people attending YALC. It’s scary and I’ll be the first to admit that because I can be terrified of talking to other people as well, but we all have a common interest.
It’s easier in queues because you’re all waiting for the same thing, be it an author signing or an ARC, so strike up an conversation about that. It’ll make the wait go much quicker and everyone I met at YALC was so incredibly friendly.
Sunday was the end of YALC, and by this point I was so shattered that when I woke up part of me was tempted to just stay in bed and give the last day a miss so I could sleep more. The train delays I had didn’t make it any easier, but in the end I was glad I made it up to London because I ended up snagging my best ARC of the weekend, but again more on that later in my YALC Haul.
Also on Sunday Alwyn Hamilton unveiled the cover for the last book in the Rebel of the Sands series; Hero at the Fall. I am a massive fan of this series, and was incredibly excited to see the cover because so far all the books in the trilogy have been beyond gorgeous. Of course Hero at the Fall was no exception.
Hero at the Fall by Alwyn Hamilton
Once, in the desert country of Miraji, there was a Sultan without an heir.
The heir had been killed by his own brother, the treacherous Rebel Prince, who was consumed by jealousy and sought the throne for himself.
Or so it was said by some. There were others who said that the Rebel Prince was not a traitor but a hero…
In the final battle for the throne, Amani must fight for everything she believes in, but with the rebellion in pieces, and the Sultan’s armies advancing across the desert plains, who will lead, who will triumph, who will live and who will die?

The Hazel Wood is one of my most anticipated releases of next year, and the second I saw Penguin Platform had ARC copies behind their stand I knew I needed to get my hands on a copy. I pretty much stalked their Twitter and their stand, keeping an eye out for the flash giveaway.
This was the ARC I ran out of a panel for, and it was lucky I did because they were gone in five minutes.
- The Truth and Lies of Ella Black by Emily Barr
- Invictus by Ryan Graudin
I had no idea there was going to be an Invictus ARC drop at YALC until the Sunday morning, and getting a copy (that I was later able to get signed by Ryan Graudin) pretty much made my weekend.
- Everless by Sara Holland
- I am Traitor byĀ Sif SigmarsdĆ³ttir
- The City of Brass byĀ Ā S.A. Chakraborty
- Book of Fire by Michelle Kenney
- Blackbird by N.D. Gomes
And that was my weekend, it was insanely tiring but all in all I cannot wait for YALC 2018. That being said I am glad these conventions are only once a year, I feel I need a year to recover from this one in order to be able to do it all again.
Plus I now have a lot of books I need to get through.
Did anyone else go to YALC this year; if so what was the highlight of your weekend? Also is anyone already planning to go next year? I certainly am.
Let me know in the comments below.
YALC sounds amazing!!
I am so jealous of your The Book of Dust sampler!!! His Dark Materials is one of my favorite series of all time. I couldn’t believe it when Philip Pullman said he was writing more books in that universe.
Since I live in California, I don’t ever plan on attending YALC which is okay with me because California has some great book festivals like YALLWest

It’s incredible. Oh the second I saw that Book of Dust sampler I had to grab a copy. I am so beyond excited for it to be released. I already have my copy on pre-order! š
I’ve seen some posts for YALLWest and that looks incredible. One day I’d love to make it to the US for a book convention, but until then I have YALC! š

Your haul is insanely AWESOMEEE!!! :O I’m glad to see all these books you were able to pick up. And man, I think the best thing about all this has to be the virtual queuing š® THAT is a HUGE problem-solver. Waiting in line for an hour before meeting an author and missing out on other things going around is suuuuuch a disappointment! What happens when it’s your turn? Do you just go to the booth and cut whatever line is there to say “MY TURN! LOOK! IT’S MY NUMBER!” ? š®

I ended up with so many more books from YALC than last year, and than I thought I would as well.
The virtual queuing was an incredible way to manage the signings, just because it stopped the queues for some authors taking up the whole floor, and yeah left you free to see more of the con as well.
No they’d call out the numbers, so when the queue got down to a more manageable level they’d say people with tickets 1-10 or 21-30 could join the end, and they’d keep doing that until all the people had got their books signed.

Ohhhh maaan, that’s definitely a nice little improvement for any book convention. I wonder if it’s something that’s being applied everywhere. š®

I hope so. I’ve been to conventions where there hasn’t been virtual queuing and they’ve been a mess at times!

Ha, I feel like that happened to someone else with this post as well. Sometimes it seems like WordPress has some very strange bugs! š
Yes meeting V.E. Schwab was amazing, I am a huge fan of her books so it was one of the highlights of my weekend. I can’t wait to get around to the ARCs on my list either because a lot of them are highly anticipated releases of mine.
I did have an amazing time, and I’m already so excited for YALC 2018! š ā¤

WordPress is SO weird! Like recently I’ve only had the option to “schedule” posts and not “publish” them… and when I schedule them, they don’t publish at the right time! šš
I BET meeting Schwab was amazing! I probably would collapse from meeting her, haha! Yesss, I’m so excited to hear your thoughts on those ARCs!

I tried scheduling one or two times and always had the same problem you just described. Now I’ve given up and I just post them when I want them posted. Less hassle that way.
It really was, and hopefully you’ll get to meet her one day May, hopefully you won’t collapse when you do though. š

I remember talking to you about YALC a while back. While I was technically in England for the weekend, I was so busy with Pride that it wouldn’t have worked out anyway. I’m not a big reader of YA, so I probably wouldn’t have picked up quite as many books – but some are really exciting, like Beasts Made of Night, which is on my wishlist! I also would have loved to meet Hannah Witton, who is one of my favourite YouTubers and was there with her book. Maybe next year it will be easier and I will actually make it! š

Oh it’s a shame you weren’t able to make it this year, but maybe next. Also I imagine Pride must have been a fun experience, and probably something you had more fun taking part in considering you’re not a big reader of YA.
Maybe next year, I think you’d really enjoy the event Izzi! š

Amazing post Beth! Looks like you had a great time and met some really cool authors! Isn’t Schwab the sweetest? I got to meet her last year and she was fantastic.
I completely with turning on notifications, I have done that and OMG that is very helpful. Sometimes the pub houses give passwords via Twitter and you have to say it in order to get the book. I also love the virtual queue. They did that here for BookCon as well, I 100% agree with you that it makes things much easier. You don’t have to worry about lines at all.
You snagged some really great books and I really hope you enjoy them all. Ugh that Godsgrave sampler and that cover *melts* I cannot wait for that book. I look forward to reading your thoughts on some of these books.

Thanks so much Gretchen, and yeah overall it was a brilliant weekend. I was thrilled to meet Schwab again, and all the other others I got to see as well. š
Oh definitely, there are so many ARCs I would have missed if I didn’t have my notifications on. They should do virtual queuing at every event I think, it makes life so much easier both for the people attending the conventions and the people running it.
I can’t wait for Godsgrave, the sampler has made me desperate for the book now. I have it on pre-order but it still feels like a really long wait until its release!

I’ve never been to any convention or any type of book related events in the US and I’ve always been curious (sorry if this question is too odd), do you pay for the books you get there or is everything free? Where I live any sort of event thats related to books I have to pay for the books and they are always so expensive so I just don’t bother. Anyways, I’m really glad you enjoyed your time at YALC and got to pick up exciting reads!

Definitely not an odd question, it was something I was wondering before I went but I didn’t have anyone I could ask. š Anyways the ARCs I got were free, they were given out by the publishers as flash giveaways or competitions or first come first serve, but the other books I brought. So the early releases, like The Loneliest Girl in the Universe, or the general haul books, like Dune Messiah, were the only ones I paid for.
